welcome to this episode of dude sawdust i'm your  host carpenter logan and i'm with my very good   friend dusty vollis who in fact is actually  more skilled in finnish carpentry than i   am and today we're going to go over the 15  don'ts of shiplap installation that's right   stay tuned because we got you covered we're  going to take you through a to z everything   you need to know and 15 things you should not  do when it comes to putting up ships [Music]   dusty bottoms we got this baseboard and  we got to figure out what to do with it   some say keep it some say get rid of it but  this is a molded baseboard and we have trim   that's going to come down on it you can't take  square trim and put it on top of the baseboard   so that brings us to don't number 15 don't keep  your molded baseboard dope number 14 do not forget   to mark your baseboards before you  start putting the shift flap up don't number 13 don't forget to  level your first piece of shiplap   otherwise it's going to  throw the whole project off don't number 12 don't run your boards in  between two studs so if you need to make   a cut and join your shiplap together you  need to make sure you cut your board to end   on the stud this way you can join the  two pieces together and use brad nails   to keep these flush otherwise you  might have two boards that wave around   because there's no stud back here to hold them  in place [Music] don't number 11 don't start from   the top always start from the bottom and work your  way up it's much easier to make your bottom board   level and flush the way you want it than if you  were to start at the top and work your way down   dope number ten when you're cutting the  ship lap for your electrical outlets   make sure that you measure and cut the shift flap  to the electrical box so don't cut the hole too   big or your brackets for your electrical will  fit too far down inside and you won't be able   to get your plate on so again you want to cut  it so your brackets sit on top of the ship flat   but can still screw into the box so don't  number 10 don't cut the hole too big   don't number nine don't use wood unless that's  the look you're going for if you're going to do   a ship lap project because it's something you saw  on a youtube video and you say i want it to look   like that and you come home with wood well mdf  is flawless essentially mdf gives you clean lines   no knots and looks beautiful so in  that case if you want the perfect look   don't use wood dope number eight the  previous don't we said don't use wood   use mdf it's an easier material to work with  and it lines up straight however if you were   installing the shift lap in a bathroom in a  kitchen or anywhere near water like a laundry room   don't use mdf it absorbs water and has a  potential of warping don't number seven   don't use narrow shiplap i think neuroship  lap is fine the wider the better actually   it's an aesthetic appeal trust me your wives  are going to like it better if you just   pick the wider board because narrowly because your and in the end they're going to be disappointed   with the job that you did  by picking narrow ship left number six don't use construction adhesive if  you put it on your walls and you ever want to   remove your ship left down the road when you pull  that ship lap off guess what you're pulling off   all your drywall with it so don't use it just  make sure you find your stud like we showed you   hammer right in the stud your ship  lat's gonna be nice and solid i promise   don't number five don't use short nails you  gotta go through the ship lap through the   drywall and into the stud i recommend using  inch and a half nails you can get away with   inch and a quarter just fine my preference  is inch and a half don't use short nails   don't number four don't use the brad nailer in  the wrong direction so there's two ways to put   up ship black you can put it horizontally which  most people do or you can also put it vertically   and depending on which direction your ship lap  is going is going to change the way that you hold   the brad nailer so if it's horizontally you want  the brad nailer to be up and down the reason why   is because your brad nails have a beveled edge  and if they go rogue they will go to the side   but they will not go up through the end of the  board if you're holding the gun straight up   if this were a vertical ship lap you want to turn  the gun sideways so if the nail does end up going   rogue again it will go along with the board but  it will not go out through the side the reason   why that's important if the nail goes rogue and  out to the side you've got to mess on your hand   it's going to make it tough to get that next board  to sit flush you'll have to do a lot of work to   get that out of there you don't want that make  sure you're using the brad nailer in the right   direction don't number three don't leave edges  of shiplap exposed you're gonna see all over the   internet where people are doing these diy jobs  and they're leaving the edges exposed i'm saying   right now it doesn't look good it's the easy way  out always use trim it's going to make that edge   look sharp and neat and when people come and  see your job they're gonna give you compliments   dope number two don't waste time getting hung up  on a sixteenth of an inch or a quarter of an inch   or how perfect your cuts are in the corner when  you're cutting the shift lap the reason being as   logan just said if you put trim on the edge you're  gonna cover that up anyway and this is gonna give   you a seamless look and if you worry about getting  every cut perfect here you're just gonna waste   time don't number one and this is a big one  and i know i'm gonna upset a lot of diy-ers   out there trying to save a buck but i'm gonna  tell you right now this is the number one don't   and that is don't use faux shiplap also known as  fake ship lab or wood paneling and i'm going to   tell you why with faux shiplap it's really hard  to get a clean and sharp look when you stand back   and look at your wall that you did your ship up  on you're going to see imperfections that you're   not going to be happy with take it from me i did  an entire fireplace 20 feet tall my first shiplap   project ever and in the end it does look nice i  can't argue with that but if i had to do it all   over again i would have used actual shiplap just  like this the lines would have been more seamless   there wouldn't have been any waviness when the  sun comes in at a certain angle you can see the   imperfections of the boards a lot more and being  the one that did the project it kind of gets under   my crawl a little bit i really don't like the  way it turned out so how'd i do it all over again   i definitely would have used real [ __ ] left and  with faux ship lap you get what you paid for if   you're just trying to save a couple bucks that's  great i think we've all been there we want to keep   that money in our pocket however remember you are  going to be living with this and if you use faux   ship flap and you want it looking nice you are  going to have to use some construction adhesives   and get into a lot more money buying the things  to make it look nice when in reality all you had   to do is spend a little bit of extra money  get a good product throw it up it's going   to look seamless you're going to be happy with  it and in the end you will save time doing this   i would challenge you to go onto youtube and type  infoshiplab and look at all the videos of people   putting up the paneling and then look at the  people that did it you're going to notice the   difference in the final product and that should  be the reason why you go with the real stuff   this wall right behind us is not even finished  yet it still needs to be painted and a few odds   and ends but we have a whole video on it right  here click on this video so you can see how we   did this whole project we appreciate  you watching dude sawdust [Music] out
