while it is tempting to follow design Trends overdoing it will not only ROP your space of individuality but will also make it look dated real quick in this video I'll go through 11 popular trends that are overdone and how you can incorporate Trends in a more Timeless manner so many homes and apartments have installed gray vinyl flooring in recent years combined with gray everything else that it becomes overdone and at this point looks quite dated as well well I do think that gray itself is a Timeless neutral color and anything that is overdone or badly done is going to look dated pretty quickly further graywood look floors are never really that first style to begin with and often times they have an undertone that is very hard to work with not to mention many of them often look cheap I don't often see the same problem with ped concrete or Limestone flooring both of which are also gray if you're looking to install Timber or vinyl flooring consider natural wood tone floors like oak or Maple these Timbers are lighted to medium neutral Brown which never go goes out of style it's always best to go with a Timeless Choice as flooring is really difficult to replace I highly suggest not to buy gray flooring purely because it is on sale as the TR cycle is nearing the end if you happen to have them and absolutely hated it but are looking for ways to work around them without ripping it out I highly suggest getting a generous size Rock in your space to cover most of it up if you're on the other camp and Grace an absolute must in your interior add it in through decorations instead there's so many beautiful spaces in incorporating gray decor and upholstery and many others with beautiful gray walls and marble finishes the key is always Balan whether it is layering in warm wood tones or adding colors and textures that relates with the gray finishes I'm not against ax and walls even ones with geometric patterns but they're often done poorly and out of context making a room that has an accent wall feel balance can be challenging as they tend to take all your attention to one side of the room this can make the room feel choppy if not done properly to avoid this you need to make sure there's enough visual interest to distract your eyes from the edges of your ACC and wall this is why accent walls usually work really well to emphasize a focal point of a room such as the headboard wall of your bedroom the fireplace wall of your living room or at the end of your dining room with a credenza that is styled with lamps and other objects as they now the focal point of your room you need to layer it with objects ART furniture lighting or plants as the eyes want something to look at don't just have an Aon wall on a random empty and meaningless wall otherwise it will stick out like an isore another thing to be aware of is the style of your home it is not a good idea to put a geometric contemporary accent wall in a traditional home as it will look totally out of place instead look into wallpaper with patterns or murals then work with your hes color palette for a more Timeless look as black fixtures and Hardware has become more and more trendy I've started to see room filled with all black hardware and hardly any Decor to support it while I do love black accents like this beautiful staircase or this hallway with Timeless black and white Checker tile the issue is that many people simply choose black for everything without knowing when to stop black is a very high contrast shade which can often be too harsh inside this is especially the case for all white Interiors if there's only black Hardware like in this room your eyes will bounce from one black Hardware to the next and not be drawn to any other details in the room you've probably realized by now that anything that is excessive or done wrong will not look Timeless even though the color black is generally a Timeless Choice overdoing black Hardware will likely look dated once the trend has passed the key is to use black Hardware as sparingly with repetition of other elements throughout your room take this space for example where the designer added in Browns and greens to balance out the black accents in an all-white room if you have a farmhouse a cottage St home near the beach or one in the countryside shiplap is perfect but be aware that it doesn't work in all homes shiplap started to gain popularity because of Chip and Joanna gains who brought this trend into the mainstream however like all Trends it is not always appropriate for every house if you have a regular new build in the suburbs or a house from the '90s with this two story for year shiplap is never going to work it will look trendy and out of place and after a few years may even look tacky if you love The look but don't have the architecture for it try using shipl in smaller applications or save it for smaller rooms that are contained from the rest of the home I wouldn't recommend installing shiplap on your main open plan living room wall or as a kitchen backsplash unless the style of your house supports it bors have been overdone in many suburban homes for a while now especially those that try to do a modern farmhouse style home I'm personally not against barnor itself I think it can be a nice way to divide a flexible open plant space that doesn't require privacy or smaller rooms like a pantry or closet where the sliding mechanism takes up less space but too many times I've seen them over years in places like a bathroom where it doesn't really make any sense even Hotel bathrooms now have this trend which in my opinion is an even bigger crime considering that people often share hotel rooms with friends or colleagues due to the way it's built there's often a small gap between the door and the wall which means they'll often let through sound and smell as you can imagine this is not ideal for those times you need some privacy a pocket door is a great alternative for small bathrooms that don't have space for a Traditional Swing door although I understand that it is much more complex to install if you're about to renovate or decorate your home be sure to check out our new space planning cheat sheet I've compiled all the need to know measurements so you can save time and avoid common mistakes which would have cost hundreds if not thousands we've also bundled them with our shopping list and interior planning template so you'll know where to shop and have your own project manager who can keep track of of your purchases and budget like flooring tows are a finish that can be easily changed what is worse is that the trend cycle is very short usually around 2 years meaning that it is likely your tiles will quickly look dated remember this pencil tile that everyone was installing back in 2010 I think we can all agree that it looks stated now many of us seem to think that Tils are a great way to express our creativity but I personally think that they're better as a backdrop for decorating as you can still have all the fun with decorating think of it like a canvas for painting rather than having the canvas in a wild pattern itself this doesn't mean that I'm against pattern or colorful tiles I mean just look at this kitchen I think they're spectacular the problem is that for most of us who have a newly built Builder grad's kitchen these Tils will just make the rest of the space look sad what is worse is that big box stores usually sell the trendiest and most cheaply produced tiles which of course will result in a cheap and trendy look I find that GE metric shape tiles are the worst out of everything out there as they tend to demand the most attention while it may not be as fun I find that going for classic white or cream towel is a safer choice and will withstand the test of time you can even consider Herring bone KitKat or even zish TOS to add some texture to the space this will still leave you with a clean yet contemporary backdrop to sell your space with Bolder Accents in your artworks and rugs I'm not saying that all black and white homes are overdone it is highly dependent on their location and setting for example a home with a black exterior in a leafy green neighborhood with plenty of tall evergreen trees generally looks great I particularly like homes in these settings that you show Sugi ban a method of wood preservation that involves Charing wood as these homes blend so well into the natural environment on the other hand black and white homes often don't look good in desert settings or Suburban areas that are full of concrete especially in places like Texas or large parts of Australia where it gets really really hot in summer yet I often see newly built neighborhoods without any Greenery all black roofs in places where it frequently hits about 40° C in the summer even worse are the random black and white homes popping out in various neighborhoods which are done completely out of context again there is a time and place for everything and I think it looks really beautiful here at the end of the day if you want to paint your exterior black and white it is really important to take into account the architecture and location of the building solid marble backsplashes and more specifically heavily veined marble backsplashes are an overdone design Trend they can be pulled off beautifully in highend designer kitchens but it is almost impossible to do them right in a builder grade Kitchen on a budget especially when there hasn't been much consideration of the colors that are present in the marble veins it never looks good if there are let's say brown veins in the marble and this color has not been picked up anywhere else in the interior the marble ends up looking random and completely out of place overall I find that this is a trend that has not been executed well in most kitchen if you do like the counter spash look consider a finish that is more quiet instead of a heavily veined marble that often looks busy similarly with bathrooms don't put quartz or porcelain tiles with over-the-top veining I'm not sure about you but I honestly think it looks ridiculous word signs like live life love or eat in the kitchen always seem to make their way into the ordinary person's home but you'll never see this signs in magazines or high-end designer homes none of these words signs are anything meaningful to an interior all they do is create a sense of cliche and they don't even look good in the first place if you have any of these cheesy quotes hanging around consider replacing them with artworks or murals on the wall RGB light is one of those things that when used properly can actually enhance the mood of a space but it is very easy to go overboard and actually do the complete opposite I personally think that it should only be used in self-contained spaces like a movie or games room or in specific situations like a Christmas decorations or when hosting a party a purple light in the kitchen for everyday use is definitely not something that I find interesting having said that a recessed strip light with standard warm light can be a really interesting addition in places like the kitchen and bathroom or under a shelving while also providing some form of Illumination they can also be a great way to add some accent lighting and highlight architectural features in your space modernizing a dated home is one thing but completely ripping out details from a period home is a waste even worse is when everything is replaced with trendy finishes without any regards for the architecture and the history of the home there are many ways you can modernize a home while preserving its details and showcasing its Rich history and Architectural Beauty I always suggest working with your home's architecture instead of against it to ensure that whatever you choose is appropriate and will not look dated in a few year's time if you found this video useful be sure to
