say goodbye the plain boring walls and hello to Vertical shiplap that's right vertical shiplap let me show you how to install it all next on home Pro Hero [Music] the master bathroom's been gutted and now it's time to make it look good let's add some vertical shift light I've always done horizontal shiplap I've never done vertical how hard going to be so we're doing the vertical ship lap which is a certain portion of the master bathroom basically from door to door and with a window in between the rest of the area of the bathroom doing something even more special which I'll show you in a later video my shiplap wall is going to be six foot tall but it's going to take into account the one by four at the top which is three and a half inches the cap which is three quarters of an inch and then off the 1x6 bottom baseboard that's five and a half inches I'm using the laser to shoot me a line from one part of the room to the other that line 71 and a quarter uh I've got a three quarter inch cap it's going to go on top of it all but that would be the height of my one by four my vertical one by four we'll install that first tools pretty simple same tools I use every time that's why I invest in good quality tools and the return of investment as you do more projects is always better the 18 gauge seems to do everything I need to do I know there's like a 17 or a 16 and 15 gauge the 18 is small enough for the little stuff and big enough for the bigger stuff [Music] I made this little horseshoe it's gonna drop down so I can catch the mirror between my mirrors about 37 inches wide fits perfect so you want to make sure the bottom is lined up not the top the Top's gonna hide with the cap just make sure your bottoms lined up you should have studs in the corner all right and I think I've got a king stud sitting right here still hopefully if not we'll just pack it temporarily until I uh have an opportunity to find another stud [Music] y so in this situation I have one stud here and one over here I got nothing here so what I'm gonna do is I'm just going to crisscross a couple Nails into the drywall that's enough to hold it in place until the adhesive dries [Music] okay let's move on to the baseboards real quick it's one by six it's actually five and a half inches uh wide uh it's just stock Square Pine that's primed just up now one by four above it's just a square there's no molding to it or anything it's kind of look we like at our house craftsman style when it comes to the ship lap you want your ship flap to be slightly less of a width than your main boards that way they tuck in and give you a nice reveal I want to be a little less than 62 and a quarter for the fact that my elevation over there might be slightly different than the one over here I want to have a little bit of lead way um in case I need to adjust the bottom board I like to see all these shiplock boards about the same length just for ease of cut yeah I've got a just a two by four that was ripped down from another project and it's 62 an eighth so this will be my spacer between my top rail that we know it's level and my bottom baseboards that will be level based off the top rail [Music] foreign [Music] my wife's gonna kill me if I keep pulling her tub out but oh well I gotta get behind it so hopefully after this weekend I'll have everything in place where she can actually have her tub back but for right now it's out of here real quick uh this is about 14 feet long this bathroom I got to do it in two eight foot sections of baseboard uh what I like to do is put a 22 and a half inch angle on this side and then a 22 and a half degree angle on the other side and then I'll nail through the two angles to make that nice and tight and almost seamless you might still be able to see it but it's sitting behind the tub so it's the least revealing location I can put it oh [Music] we're good to go with perimeter I guess you would call it for our shiplap boards so let's start installing those right now so I'm a symmetric type guy and no matter which side I start on this side or this side with the ship lap it doesn't matter I'm not going to end up perfect on either side it's just impossible so what I'm gonna do is I'm going to start on this side since it's the most visible part of the room and I'm going to begin putting the ship lap up vertically right across the room to the opposite side so now let's put the vertical shiplap up I said vertical but the most part we'll make sure you put some glue on the back so the first one all we got to do is make sure it's level pretty good right there actually really good [Music] so this one we have a stud right here so we're going to use that stud now this next one we won't have a stud so we'll do something special there yep okay the one thing you want to always make sure is that it's tight you got a consistent Groove here between panels check your level two make sure you're in the zip code which I'm perfect right now so this one doesn't have any studs my stud was here and my studs on the next one here so this one doesn't have a stud so all we got to do is crisscross it crisscross two nails to kind of keep it in place until the glue sets we don't have to worry about it again so long story short I'll crisscross the top one that way one that way same hole that way I kind of have to repair one hole [Music] so this is the review I was talking about earlier you really want this reveal right here for looks mainly Cosmetics but then also to hide it where you put a clock Gap in there and you can hide that small little crack right there same thing with the reveal at the top here you can see there's a reveal right there and there's a reveal down at the bottom too foreign [Music] the corner doesn't have to be perfect it can be hidden by the other intersecting shiplap pieces coming the other way and normally your Corners are never perfect anyways but uh you want to make sure you pinch the corner in because it may be loose right here so get a little tug before you fasten it I think I'm going to go ahead and just do this side too because I get into the corner about four and a half that's right over there is five and a half so I think I can live with dying in the corners [Music] about the same distance over there so if you look at this wall and you look at that wall you really don't notice it I mean you do notice it but you don't you know what I'm saying as long as I start with a full piece there and a full piece there that's the most important whatever happens in the corner happens in the corner and that's what's going on here I think it's really important to make sure we look the same going up on that side of the mirror and that side of the mirror along with that side and that side I think that's the most important visual thing so you can see what I did was I wasted a couple feet of board of shiplap and I cut these little slivers down there at the bottom and those slivers just faced out I started with Center on the wall if I come two inches off this wall and I run down here two inches off this wall that gives me a seam on both sides front dead center in between the four inches here board here [Music] barely a full board here and then once again the seam with the two inches in between them and then we get to the center that's what I got I'll have to trim these two boards that fit in here which if I do that it's gonna be around the money dead center so I can live with that setup and that's what I'm Gonna Roll with let's get to work [Music] foreign [Music] got the cuts done I'll tell you one thing cutting on both sides of a board is really difficult uh took some time I'm not gonna lie to you it's gonna fit because I've already tried it about seven or eight nine times uh just to get it perfect one board a billion Cuts so that's key to take a slow at a time it's not perfect pretty good good enough right I'm glad I'm painting and caulking this because if I wasn't it sucks now it's okay so we're gonna move on uh we'll go ahead and run the bottom short ones to the center or close to the center one before the center [Music] foreign [Music] the first 10 times no five or six times but uh let's see if I got here the syrup the white shiplap's Really Gonna offset the room and make it a lot brighter too and that was one of my goals when I started this renovation of this bathroom is to make it brighter obviously when I put the huge window to help things uh making sure I measure over to make sure my top and my bottom are in the same ZIP code right now I'm at 23 and a quarter on both top and bottom I've been adjusting the top slightly 16th at a time a little wider than the bottom to get me within that range you know as long as I'm in within a quarter of an inch or so I should be fine but I'm trying to be exact 10 and three quarter and three quarters we're good come on [Music] let's see foreign [Music] pretty much cut them a size same size five and a quarter and then I just put notches in the back right now I'll have to adjust these gaps make sure they're right but I'll eyeballs and then this guy fits well slides in there like that boom what do you think [Music] so what I'm gonna do is I'm going to cut this one by two I'm probably gonna rip the one by two down to maybe an inch and then that will leave me a one-quarter inch reveal above here which stays consistent with the reveal everywhere else on the project so just a clean look I don't want it too overbearing at the very top since I'm so high as it is anyways all right pretty simple hey if you like this kind of stuff you like Home Improvements you want to improved value your home and you like these types of videos give me a like And subscribe to the channel I got a lot more coming up [Music] thank you so do you like vertical ship flap I do let me know in the comments what you think so roughly I was looking at about 375 for this project not too bad for the flare it gives hey we're not done with this room yet still got a lot to do I got to fix some tile I gotta blow out a wall I gotta do another accent wall I have to paint one wall black I'll see you next time foreign
