12 ways to look chic in a cardigan (wish I had known earlier!)

[Music] i like your sweater where'd you get it from actually it's the same as yours i used to stay away from cardigans because they're so basic and they're very easy to make you look older you know but not anymore this is how you can look chic and useful in cardigan outfits tuck in your cardigan this sounds very easy and very basic but i didn't know how to do this i didn't know i can do this because i thought of cardigan as a layering piece but when you tuck in your cardigan it gives you that totally different look now in order to do this you need to make sure your cardigan is not too long and it's not too thick otherwise it's just gonna give you too much volume when you tuck it in and that's not very flattering at all this cardigan is from banana republic it's merino wool but it's very thin so that makes it very easy to tuck in this cardigan is not very long to begin with so when i wear it i'm tucked with the midi skirt it doesn't look terrible but once you tuck it in you will notice a huge difference visually even though it looks like only two to three inches shorter on your top now the big difference is your body is now divided into one third on top and two thirds at the bottom this is the most pleasant proportion to the eye regardless of your height this is going to make your body look more proportionate and make your torso look shorter and your legs look longer it's take it to the next level try a belt i'm adding a white belt to this look immediately make you look even more chic i'm using a white belt i love white belts it also serves my body type very well because i have long torso and short legs when i wear a white belt it's gonna make my torso look shorter and make my legs look longer but if you happen to have short torso body type then be very different shapes this white one is from j.crew a pencil denim skirt and the blue one is from madewell an a-line denim skirt either way you cannot go wrong with this combination i do want to mention you want your skirt to be on the shorter side if you want to look even younger because the cardigan my biggest concern with them is that they tend to age us denim skirts have their very natural useful vibe that totally counter balance the cardigan agent effect you can choose your favorite shoes you can't go wrong with any of them either flats or even heels i like to wear the denim skirt with white sneakers because one white sneakers are very on trend and two they look very clean minimalist and very casual with this look you won't look like you're trying too hard plus white sneakers have another layer of making you look younger kind of effect i think if i go to a bar like this they're going to want to check my driver's license so that's why i totally love this look if you want to upgrade your cardigan outfit wear it with dress boots especially tall boots whether it's knee-high boots or over-the-knee boots you name it but it works better with dress boots because dress boots can instantly upgrade any plain outfit this is a cardigan sweater blazer from j.crew this is not a very fitted cardigan it's a relaxed fit and it's the thigh lens this is a very difficult lens to make it look stylish because of the lens and because of the fit so when i wear it with my tall knee-high boots it instantly gives you a different look and of course i'm wearing it with a shorter skirt too and that also helps to make this outfit look much more stylish get a duster coat this is a duster coat cardigan cashmere cardigan from saks fifth avenue this is new to me i used to stay away from this lens because i thought i am petite maybe i should just wear shorter cardigan but when your cardigan is a duster lens it actually opens up so many other ways you can style it my favorite way to wear this is in the transitioning weather because when the temperatures is up and down and you are wearing a skirt outfit top it off with a duster coat is so functional and also make you look so chic and this is very practical i can wear this from the fall the winter all the way to the spring so you can get a lot of use out of a duster coat if you never tried this look before give it a chance you might be very surprised if you don't want your cardigan to look plain or look boring try a animal print this one i got from saks fifth avenue their own label so it cost much less compared with some of the other name brands cashmere cardigans but i love it because this is so easy to look chic compared with the traditional neutral color black or beige kind of cardigans you can just throw on your favorite pair of jeans and you will not look boring than this kind of cardigan if you want to look more chic in your cardigan outfit try pairing with faux leather or you can also wear with a coated jeans my kodi jeans is from banana republic looks just like a faux leather but they are breathable because they are denim material the reason they will make you look more chic is because faux leather or coated jeans they're not basic denim they give you that very nice contrasting of fabrics with your sweater and that makes your outfit much more interesting and also faux leather or coated jeans they look hot and that's not gonna make you look outdated in a cardigan even if your cardigan is very basic like this one a very basic black cardigan sweater when you pair it with faux leather this has a totally different look and you look so much more on trend when you wear a relaxed face cardigan with jeans another great way to upgrade outfit is to add a skinny belt the skinny belt serves two purposes one it defines your waist so if you happen to be an hourglass shape or a pear shape you have a very small waist you want that to become the focal point of your outfit when you add that skinny belt it's gonna serve that purpose another one when you add a belt it also defines your proportion like me i am five foot two i always want my legs to look longer when i add the belt it looks like my waistline is elevated this makes my waist looks higher than my natural waistline and this is one of the best ways to make your legs look elongated a great way to upgrade your cardigan outfit is to add stamen jewelry this is one of my favorite things to do because even if your sweater is so basic when you ask damon jury it's gonna instantly make you look very different it also makes a very plain outfit look very expensive and it doesn't cost too much right now the chin necklaces are very on trend this one i got from ann taylor got it on a great sale it was a very good price it's like under 20 dollars you can get them from any other places it won't cost you too much but it will upgrade your outfit instantly get a cardigan with some details look at this one i got from metroname got the pearlescent buttons that's so cute and this is another one i got from metronome also got metallic buttons things like this they're gonna make your cardigan look very cute you know the reason traditional cardigans are very easy to make us look older is because they're plain but if you go with a solid cardigan with little details that make it very interesting it's gonna make your outfit look much more elevated it looks effortless it doesn't look you're trying too hard but your outfit immediately looks upgraded there's only one cardigan i can have it has to be a crop length cardigan these are the crop cardigans i got from h m i absolutely adore them they make my life so much easier when your cardigan is the crop lens it opens up so many more styling options now all of a sudden you can wear it with jeans pants skirts short skirts long skirts literally anything in your closet would go with a cropped lens cardigan and this you can also wear them by itself as a top or you can wear them as a layer they have made my life so much easier i can't get over with it actually i went back to h m and got even more so with this crab cardigan it's not gonna age you the traditional silence cardigan is much easier to make us look older than we are i know a lot of you have mentioned to me oh gee i can't wear anything cropped lens because they tend to expose my midsection it makes my thighs and my hips look more obvious i totally hear you if you are self-conscious about your midsection or about your size and your hips the strategy you can use is to go with a feline shaped skirt because that's not gonna be clinging to your midsection or your thighs or your hips and nobody will notice your concerned area or you can go with anything black color for your bottom and that's also gonna camouflage any areas you don't want people to notice but go with the croplands cardigan especially if you are petite this is going to immediately make your proportion look so much better
