we don't live in a world where scientists can explain everything and we hope we never do what a boring world that would be it's part of our human nature to love mysteries and ancient Mysteries are every bit as enthralling as modern ones fortunately we're not short of ancient Mysteries you can find them everywhere and some of the best of them are here in this video who on Earth was idru that's a question that archaeologists in the UK K were wrestling with as 2021 came to a close after finding a mysterious cross-shaped Anglo-Saxon pendant the golden artifact dates to either the 8th or 9th century and was discovered on the banks of the river tweet close to Berwick the Rune scratched onto its surface spell the word IDR which experts believe is likely to be an Anglo-Saxon name albeit not one they've ever come across before while the Eid part of the name means happiness the rough part doesn't have any roots in any known Germanic language of the time that's especially unusual because very few people would have owned gold items like this in the British aisles of the time it could be a misspelling of ird wolf who was a deposed king of North Umbria alternatively archaeologists believe there was once a religious Center in this area and the cross could have belonged to one of its leaders Anglo-Saxon artifacts are rare discoveries but unknown Anglo-Saxon name are even rarer moving across the Irish Sea from Berwick to gway in Ireland we find the mysterious site of dun anasa it's one of the most remarkable of all the Iron Age forts in Ireland and has been said by those who visit it to have an almost mystical Aura John odonovan a historian of the mid 19th century was so overcome with emotion upon visiting that he threw away his umbrella and then threw himself on the ground screaming in ecstasy archaeologists have never been able to establish a precite date for the construction although they suspect it to be around 3100 years old from there they suspect it was occupied and expanded with additional structures over the course of several centuries there's also a Neolithic tomb in the vicinity although the tomb and the fort aren't believed to be related D Anga has been protected and preserved to maintain its original state which means no safety Provisions have ever been added to its walls visitors are warned that if they're not careful they could easily walk straight off the edge of the cliff that the fort is built at top almost all of our viewers will have heard of the Terracotta Army in China before but in December 2021 we found that the Army has a miniature equivalent that month hundreds of tiny statues of ancient Chinese warriors were discovered in a burial piit close to the city of Lindsay the Warriors are joined by miniature sculptures of watchtowers Calvary and even musicians based on the evidence at the scene the sculptures are about 2100 years old that makes them about a century younger than the Terracotta Army Chinese history experts believe that the pit and the statues inside it were created to Mark the burial of Lee Hong a former Prince of chi and Son of Emperor woo historical records say that Hong lived and died in this part of China and passed away when he was still young which would have been considered a tragedy worthy of an elaborate burial the theory sounds quite convincing but it can't be proven until archaeologists locate the prince's tomb it's proved to be elusive thus far but this is a large sight and research teams are still working their way through it speaking of surprising statues what are we to make of this unusual artwork inside the medich Chapels of Florence Italy the sculptures depict human torsos and human battle armor but the creatures inside them are decidedly not human the most famous and bizarre example is a sculpture showing the head of a creature that's been interpreted as either a worm or a serpent emerging from the top of an ancient suit of armor other examples in the same gallery show tentacle-like shapes covered in Scales or suckers occupying spaces where we should find human arms or legs many of the statues are surrounded by heraldic emblems and releves occasionally accompanied by helmets some of the more outlandish theories about the statues include the idea that the ancient Romans built exoskeletons for animals but that's considered to be unlikely it's technically possible but historians see no reasons for the Romans to do such a thing it's more likely that the the sculptures have a symbolic meaning which has been lost to time the Romans documented every aspect of their culture extensively so it seems odd that we have no explanation of this strange phenomenon sh eaka better known to the world as the burnt city is one of the oldest settlements in Iran it's easily the largest too and certainly the most mysterious burnt city is now a UNESCO world heritage site but even the people who awarded it that lofty status don't truly understand the city's history it was abandoned suddenly for unknown reasons just under 4,400 years ago with its people leaving behind very little for us to remember them by archaeologists have been digging through sh isoka for years and in December 2021 they found a collection of figurines representing humans and animals most of the figurines look like like cows but there's something odd about the human figures the men are always depicted as standing and the women are always depicted as sitting this might suggest that women were subservient to men in this Society or it could suggest that women sat on the throne and Men stood by to attend to them we simply don't know enough about the burnt City to say either way only around 4% of the old city has been fully excavated as of 2022 so perhaps the answers lie in the remaining 96% here's another UNESCO world heritage site that historians and scientists don't understand the full history of it's Poncha rothus on the coast of the Bay of Bal in India one of the things that can be said for certain about poncheras is that this Monumental complex is an outstanding example of ancient monolithic Indian Rock Cut architecture and initially historians thought the complex was carved by order of King narasimman the first a palava Emperor who ruled between 630 and 668 it now seems more likely that Nara simhan thei who ruled between 690 and 725 is a better candidate the five monuments at the side are carved in the shape of Chariots and are all part of the same long block of granite it's also been thought in the past that the structures were temples but the work appears to be unfinished so it's unlikely that they would have been consecrated why they would be abandoned in a state of near completion is unknown the name comes from the Poncha pandavas who appears in the Sanskrit epic tale mahab harada of course if we're talking about mysterious ancient structures we also have to talk about Ireland the emerald aisle is full of enigmatic ancient megaliths but perhaps none more mysterious than carolmore the archaeologists who discovered it got halfway through the process of Excavating it before they realized that they weren't dealing with a regular Barrow while parts of the structure admittedly look like a barrow the design simply isn't consistent with any other Barrel in the country for a start it appears to have been used for more than just burials there are tombs at carolmore that are more than 5,000 years old but there's also a mound that looks a little like a stage and a trench dug around the mound as if it were intended for people to stand in and look up at the stage did the ancient inhabitants come here and perform plays in front of the Dead why are there such strong traces of charcoal in the soil caramore is a place that forces us to ask plenty of questions but it's not so great at giving us [Music] answers the idea of a talking stat at you might sound ridiculous but only if you don't live in the Italian capital city of Rome there's nothing unusual about seeing a talking statue in Rome because there are six of them of course when we say they talk we don't mean it literally the statues also known as the congregation of wits became focal points for religious and political protests during the 16th century the people of Rome would leave witty critical notes at these statues for other people to read often aimed at the pope or the local government and unflattering in nature you might say that it was the 16th century Italian way of sharing memes the popes of the 16th century hated this practice and tried to either move the statues or have them placed under guard so people couldn't Express their discontent on them no matter where they ended up or how closely they were supposed to be guarded though people always found a way to make their Mark the most famous of the stat statues is il babuino he was supposed to be a representation of the half goat sat selinus of Roman mythology but the finished work was so ugly that he was nicknamed the baboon most egyptologists aren't superstitious if they were they'd never be able to handle the various ancient curses and condemnations that come with the territory of examining ancient Egyptian artifacts even to the most rational person though there's something very strange about the spinning Egyptian statuette in the museum of Manchester England it's an otherwise unremarkable Middle Kingdom statuette that's been observed turning around inside its glass case on no fewer than three occasions with photographic proof each time the case is locked and only one person has the key the statuette was donated to the museum in 1933 in the will of Miss Annie Barlo of Bolton and was initially thought to be a forgery although now it's recognized as a genuine ancient artifact on the back of the sculpture is an inscription that reads an offering which the Kings gives to Osiris Lord of life that he might give a voice offering consisting of bread beer oxen and fowl for the C Spirit of neenu historians have no idea who nienu was but they're sure he wasn't Royal it's been proposed that vibrations from traffic outside the museum might be causing it to move or that the fact it was carved from steatite means that it's vulnerable to Magnetic forces but neither explanation seems especially convincing let's have another Egyptian mystery the Zagreb mummy is so-called because it was bought by a Croatian businessman in the mid 19th century and then donated to the State Museum of Croatia upon his his death in 1877 it stayed in the museum for decades without anyone realizing that there was something unusual about the fabric that the mummy was wrapped in the fabric is now known to academics and Scholars around the world as the Liber Lantus but it still isn't understood it's considered such an important artifact because the fabric is covered in writing and the language used is ancient at truscan in fact it's the longest and most complete example of ancient at truscan writing in the world the question of why an ancient Egyptian mummy would be covered in ancient at truscan writing has been asked many times in the past and the best explanation anyone can come up with is that whoever wrap the mummy was out of conventional Fabric and used the closest thing they had on hand as the language still hasn't been fully translated we don't know what it actually says but that day will eventually come The Rock shelters of Los Gil in Somalia could be described as the world's oldest Art Gallery the paintings that cover the walls and ceilings of these natural Caverns were painted by Neolithic people who lived here more than 5,000 years ago they eventually moved out and went elsewhere but conditions inside the cave preserved their work it was eventually found by archaeologists at the beginning of the 21st Century and was initially mistaken for far more recent work because of the vibrancy of the colors and the amount of detail that survive the passing of the Millennia the l gil paintings are easily the best preserved ancient works of art on the entire African continent a team of French archaeologists claimed the discovery as their own in 2002 but it subsequently transpired that local people had been aware of them for Generations those same local people thought the French researchers were stupid for entering the caves because their folklore says the paintings are cursed and were drawn in human blood by the devil we're pretty sure we can rule out that idea it wasn't the devil's hand that painted these pictures but we know nothing about the culture of the humans whose hands really did the work the prehistoric inhabitants of Northumberland England also knew a thing or two about rock cards there's plenty of it to look at and it's considered to be of such great cultural importance that in 2014 the British government awarded the rock art protected status it's thought that these carvings are more than 6,000 years old that' make them older than the pyramids rather than being confined to a single location The Carving stretch across the countryside all over the county there are more than 1200 of them but but it's likely that nobody knows the true number because some of them haven't yet been found there's no set pattern to the carvings some of them are circular Hollows While others are more intricate and feature Rings grooves and interlocking abstract shapes it's possible that they were intended to be markers to indicate the edge of territories occupied by different tribes or cultures but we don't have enough evidence to support that idea in fact we don't have enough evidence to support any theory about the markings there might be over a thousand of them but that doesn't mean we understand them
