discovery now we are talking about cremated remains just found not of one body but of four different people a little closet here the current owner of the building naived syed showed me where the decomposing bodies of 11 infants were found up these steps behind all of this insulation this is video inside the notorious cantrell funeral home in detroit michigan this video was taken in the summer of 2018 after the funeral home was closed down but also before the 11 infant bodies were discovered in the funeral home's drop ceiling so just keep that in mind that those infant bodies are literally above us during this explore but of course we had no idea at the time of the video we begin tonight with that breaking news the state shutting down a well-known funeral home in the city of detroit 7 action news reporter brian abel joins us live from the scene brian what did investigators find that forced them to take this action some pretty disgusting details inside they've been pulling up here all afternoon to the funeral home there's some right now more in a nearby parking lot seemingly taking away remains of people yet to be cremated or buried inside after the state shut this funeral home down now the owner telling us he stored bodies in the garage to keep the smell out of the funeral home bodies in advance stages of decomposition and an unsanitary embalming room are some of the reasons the state of michigan says it's shut down cantrell funeral home on mack avenue in detroit there are individuals here who have been here for some time in my attempt to accommodate my community owner raymond contrell says he hasn't read the allegations against him that include investigators finding multiple bodies decomposing to the point they appear to be covered in mold with another body's face covered in unknown liquids cantrell says he was keeping the bodies in an unfrigerated garage until families could pay to bury or cremate the remains if i had them in the funeral home then my funeral home would not smell fresh so yes they are involved they've had their service and we put them in the garage with cantrell's funeral home forced to close families of those waiting to be buried are now searching for answers you know what to do i don't have the money to marry her but i don't even know where they're taking her so what do i do somebody needs to tell me what to do i don't know now she says she is being told to call back tomorrow to get more information on her sister's remains now the state says violations here include fraud deceit or dishonesty incompetence and gross negligence in the practice of mortuary science they have 60 days to reassign their current contracts or issue refunds reporting live in detroit brian able 7 action news brian any idea how investigators find found out what was happening in this funeral home who found those bodies and who blew the whistle they were actually tipped off by somebody in the public seemingly somebody that was inside saw that something was not right they came back late in 2017 and then they came back recently to find that the conditions had not changed carolyn all right brian thank you so much for the live report now it's also been a few years and this was one of my very first videos that i ever did so it's a bit shaky as i had no idea what i was doing back then i was not making videos at that time but i knew that for some reason i would want some of this on video someday so i decided to get a gopro and go back inside one more time to capture and document everything that i had seen inside the abandoned funeral home both in november 2017 and december 2017 the michigan state department of licensing and regulatory affairs also known as laura out of lansing michigan first came to the cantrell funeral home amidst rumors and allegations that they were improperly storing bodies and holding back on deceton's funeral preparations until families could pay the total cost which was totally against the law so when laura came to do this check on cantrell funeral home at the end of 2017 they were denied access and were not even allowed inside the funeral home which raised too many eyebrows in lansing and they knew they needed to come back state investigators from laura came back in february 2018 and april 2018 and made some bone-chilling discoveries inside cantrell funeral home the first move was made in april of 2018 when licensing and regulatory affairs suspended the funeral home license of cantrell funeral home after they investigated those allegations made against the funeral home they suspended their license based on incompetence gross negligence and improperly storing bodies things went from bad to worse for cantrell funeral home when the state investigators found two bodies in an advanced state of decomposition and covered in what appeared to be mold and the now-doted funeral home of horrors knew they were in deep trouble as investigators found approximately 20 decomposing bodies total and more evidence of gross negligence and inexcusable record keeping which also showed more than 20 thousand dollars missing from prepaid funeral services that never took place just a few months later in august of 2018 state investigators again returned to cantrell funeral home after an anonymous phone call led them to where they could find numerous corpses hidden throughout the funeral home investigators ended up finding a stillborn infant corpse hidden in a box investigators continued to search the entire premises and didn't find anything else at that time just two months later in october of 2018 another anonymous tip to state investigators made it quite clear that they had missed some and there was indeed more dead infant corpses hidden in the now shuttered funeral home the state investigators immediately came back to cantrell funeral home and did another search of the property this is when they found 11 more bodies of deceased infants ranging from gestation up to only a couple of months old and some of them even appeared to have been mummified the anonymous tip proved to be right and the 11 infant bodies were located in a drop ceiling there i took a look myself because i was like so many wondering how these bodies could have been hidden without anyone noticing he walked us about 10-15 times here never seen this thing and that's when our story took a grisly and disturbing turn and that isn't the only discovery that's been made we just found out more remains have just been found down these steps in the basement the remains of two people were found today and another two people just a couple days ago here in the basement one of the workers was here this morning cleaning he tells me he found the remains of one individual in a plastic bag in a plastic container over behind this shelf and then way back there in the dark in the corner he found the remains of another person just thrown away like trash the worker who made the fine didn't want to talk on camera understandably many are worried there could be more discoveries still so much to clean the facility so large within just a week from that gruesome discovery the new owner of the funeral home found more boxes of cremated remains hidden in the basement when his work crews were cleaning the property for renovations this discovery proved to be the final nail in the coffin as the state of michigan revoked all licensing for the owners of cantrell funeral home now from what research has shown and from what we are about to tell you you will certainly see that cantrell funeral home should have closed much sooner than 2018 problems extended beyond financial matters for cantrell funeral home former customers complained about botched funeral preparations a family sued cantrell funeral home for improperly embalming a man's body before it was flown to mississippi for the viewing when they opened the casket a large bubbling mass of maggots crawled out from the nose and mouth causing severe shock and emotional distress to the funeral audience another improper embalming that took place at cantrell funeral home was when they left a woman looking like a monster that complaint described liquid seeping from her mouth and eyes and soaking her gown and said her lips appeared three times the normal size at her funeral other lawsuits filed during that same time period indicate that the funeral home had a series of screw-ups including when cantrell ii put the wrong body in a casket in that case a dead man's family selected a casket and provided cantrell second with some of the clothes to bury him in when the family arrived for the service the casket and the clothes were correct but there was another man's corpse laying in the casket the first one to notice it was the dead man's mother who also had a heart condition and became so emotionally upset that she had to go to the hospital and according to that lawsuit it was decided at this time that raymond cantrell ii would be fired from his father's funeral home business and then he went to work for target records indicate that problems had indeed plagued the business and its employees for many years even years before cantrell the second's negligence including accusations that cantrell funeral home improperly embalmed bodies causing several bodies to decompose for open casket funerals refusals to bury a baby that had been dead for about four years because of an unpaid bill the funeral home also faked a burial of a 62 year old woman whose body was finally discovered in the garage the heaviest fine for cantrell received by the state of michigan was for ten thousand dollars for having unlicensed embalmers working for him over the years violations continued to pile up against cantrell funeral home and prompted visits from state investigators many times from the 1990s through its final closure in 2018. the east side neighborhood that surrounded cantrell funeral home has long been inundated with extreme crimes such as murder robbery assaults guns drugs and prostitution which sometimes even extended from outside to inside the funeral home in 2007 a brawl erupted outside the funeral home during the service for a suspected gang member who had been killed in a drive-by shooting the brawl eventually carried to inside the funeral home cantrell senior once told the free press they've been robbing and stealing and breaking in ever since i've been here cantrell senior lived for a time in the residence above the funeral home and recounted how he once repelled three would-be burglars who had climbed up into the second story porch of his home and were coming inside his window i had a 45 in my hand sat up in bed and said come on in fellas they took off running he later recounted when raymond cantrell senior passed away in 2016 the funeral home was left to his son raymond cantrell ii it is quite obvious that cantrell funeral home had a long history of shady business operations but the big trouble came after cantrell ii took over the funeral home after his father's death since the news of shocking revelations went nationwide leaving people in both disbelief and disgust the state of michigan quickly moved in and revoked the funeral business license and the mortuary science license of raymond cantrell ii as well as other employees of cantrell funeral home on mack avenue and my god it was about damn time state investigators immediately worked overtime to identify the 11 infant remains found in the funeral home's drop ceiling seven of the 11 infants have been identified and their families have been notified during the separate investigation and to nobody's surprise they found utterly terrifying details with some of the infant remains the parents of a boy still born in january of 2014 had their sons remain stored for several months unrefrigerated in a tupperware container at cantrell funeral home the mother of another child still born in 2011 claims that she was informed by detroit police that her son's remains may have been among those found hidden at cantrell funeral home she had been told by cantrell staff that the hospital had cremated her son's remains the parents of a third baby still born in 2009 claimed cantrell was paid for a funeral but it never happened michigan state police eventually asked the mother for a dna sample to compare it with the fetal remains found up in the ceiling the funeral home also falsified the death certificate of a baby infant recording that she had been buried in a local cemetery when in fact her remains were discovered in the funeral home ceiling in 2019 shortly after the terrifying gruesome discoveries forced the funeral home to immediately close a major transformation took place inside the old cantrell funeral home as the new owner is turning the space into a community center a much needed resource for people in the crime red neighborhood on detroit's east side 10 large dumpsters of garbage have since been removed flooring drywall and ceiling tiles are all gone all the remains of the funeral home are also gone including caskets and embalming tables in parts of the building new paint and new carpet have been put down the new owner stated yes it was a funeral home people might be scared of this place but life goes on we did not want this building to be left abandoned like a bunch of others that we have in this neighborhood this building had a sound structure and i thought there's definitely hope that we could do something positive here the neighborhood doesn't need to be constantly reminded of the horrific tragedy that unfolded here so doing something positive with the building can only hope to override the negative past unfortunately that's going
