and what was one of the strangest crossovers in recent memory Square teamed up with Disney to combine their two worlds and give us Kingdom Hearts released back in 2002 Kingdom Hearts introduced sister Sora Riku and Kairi and reintroduced us too many Final Fantasy and Disney favors hi I'm Adrian with the leader board and today we're taking you on a journey through Kingdom Hearts with conception how Mickey could have been the main character and more so it cook your favorite Keyblade because we're going through 107 facts about Kingdom Hearts the first one let's get started number one the initial idea for Kingdom Hearts began when Shinji Hashimoto and Hironobu Sakaguchi were discussing Super Mario 64 they were planning to make a game with freedom of movement in three dimensions like Super Mario 64 but ran into one issue they believe that only characters as popular as Disney's could rival Mario game number two a chance meeting between Hashimoto and a Disney executive in an elevator allows Hashimoto to pitch the idea directly to Disney back then Disney's Japan division and the gaming company Square shared the same building for work number three touch Fiona Mora a monster designer for the Final Fantasy series overheard Hashimoto and Sakaguchi's conversation and volunteered to lead the project the two producers then agreed to let him direct number four Nomura was inspired to try making this game when he was still working on Final Fantasy 7 and super mario 64 had just come out the Nintendo 64 Nomura loved the idea of having a full 3d environment and the freedom that came with it when he told his colleagues that wanted to make a game combining the two aspects he was told but Mario is already a world-famous character it would be impossible to start from scratch with an all-new character luckily Kingdom Hearts his characters weren't all new number 5 while Nomura had done previous work in the Final Fantasy series as Monster designer graphic director he didn't gain widespread recognition until he was a lead character designer for Final Fantasy 7 number 6 originally the development focused on the gameplay with a simple story to appeal to Disney's target age range after Kingdom Hearts executive producer Hironobu Sakaguchi told amaura that the game would be a failure if it didn't aim for the same level as the Final Fantasy series he began to develop the story further and come on we're making a simple story never going to happen number 7 the motor then set out to demolish the notion that Disney games were only for kids by combining the aspects of Final Fantasy Disney the motor in the team made a game that appeal to gamers of all ages number eight scenarios were provided by Kazushige nojima who had been a scenario writer for squares from Final Fantasy 7 up until he left in 2003 no Jemma would return to write for square again as the original story writer for final fantasy 15 number 9 Nomura stated that the title of the game came from him thinking about Disney's theme parks especially Animal Kingdom however Nemoto couldn't get the IP with just Kingdom so the development team began to think about Hart as a core part of the story and they decided to combine the two to form Kingdom Hearts number 10 though Disney gave them more freedom the characters and worlds used for the games he and his staff tried to stay within the established roles of characters and boundaries of the world Nomura said that though many of the Disney characters are not normally darkened serious there weren't many challenges making them sell for the story and despite this their personalities shine because they maintain their own characteristics number eleven Nomura also felt that managing and keeping multiple worlds was problematic when deciding which world to include in games the development staff tried to take into account which Disney worlds would be interesting and made an effort to minimize any overlap in the overall look and feel of each world number 12 a criterion for inclusion was whether the staff felt the characters would fit into the storyline and into the Kingdom Hearts universes initially Nomura was hesitant to use characters he didn't design because he was unfamiliar with backstory of such characters number 13 throughout the development of the games Nomura has often lost certain events and connections between characters unexplained until a release of future game Nomura does this because he feels that games should have room for fans to speculate and use their imagination he stated that with speculation even when a game gets old people can still be happy with it number 14 Kingdom Hearts was officially announced at e3 2001 initial details revealed that it would be a collaboration between square and Disney Interactive and would feature worlds developed by both companies and Disney characters number 15 in addition to being the director of the game Nomura was in charge of design and Kingdom Hearts his original characters which include our new characters Sora Riku and Kairi number 16 in May 2002 a press release announced a list of the English voice actors the list included hailey Joe Osmond David Gallagher and hayden Panettiere voicing the three new characters introduced in the game number 17 it was also announced that many of the Disney characters would be played by the official voice actors from the respect in film one such voice actress was Catherine Beaumont the original voice of Alice in Alice in Wonderland and Wendy in Peter Pan who reprised her roles as Alison Wendy in Kingdom Hearts at the age of 64 number 18 one of the guidelines Disney laid out for the development team was to keep things as close to the original Disney movies as possible for example Tarzan has a spear in the film as he does in the game and while Disney allowed Donald to have staff and goofy a shield they didn't allow them to carry swords of any kind number 19 during the development of the game the biggest issue the team ran into was trying to capture the Disney style in a 3d video game the team had their word checked by Disney animators but the fundamental difficulty was bringing something from 2d to 3d number 20 the square development team aimed to try and reproduce characters in 3d rather than make models match some of the common problems of team ran into included weird colors shadows and textures appearing on the model number 21 aqua de Fuji the technical art director for Kingdom Hearts revealed a secret about the game that only he knew he said that in Halloweentown the Heartless have different textures and those from other worlds in the jiminy memo the picture textures look normal unless you look at it after the events of Hollow Bastion then the different version from Halloweentown will show up Fuji said the difference was so subtle that nobody could really tell so they left it that way number 22 Ramona worked on textures in addition to directing an interesting tidbit that he shared was that for a time during animation tests Sora didn't wear pants or a jacket that's because cloth texture was set aside as a different project for the movies number 23 Heartless are designed to move randomly according to animation director Tatsuya Kondo since they have no hearts we aim to make their movements unpredictable the shadows have an image of making strange movements like an animal or a bug the shadows and power wilds have more animations than boss enemies young staff members became engrossed in making them number 24 did you wish that Mickey was in more than one scene so did Nomura but due to contract issues Mickey was only allowed to appear in one scene in the first game Mickey's inclusion in the first game was restricted to a very small role but would be remedied in the later games as Mickey became more prominent number 25 an early trailer reveals that Donald and use these costumes were originally different in the trailer it shows that the characters are wearing their original costumes from the cartoon but the final designs are completely different and show them wearing these outfit number 26 during early talks Disney wanted donald duck to be the protagonist of the game while square one Mickey Mouse in the end Nomura didn't believe that either of those characters would work well as the main hero so Sora was created number 27 while Mickey didn't become the main character you may have noticed that Sora shares identical colors to Mickey red yellow white and black fans have even noted that they initially thought that store was Mickey in human form the colors that Sora has were inspired by Mickey's color schemes number 28 according to some content art released by Square Sarah was originally not going to wield a keyblade at all but something akin to a chainsaw sword and said he was also going to have a design with line for claws a tail and ears number 29 during the development of the game Nomura designed several original worlds that would go along with the Disney World he originally intended to have a total twenty world but the number had to be cut down for time sake number thirty when selecting world's to use in game one of the main criteria for Nomura was popularity and the characters he could use if they didn't fit into the story he was trying to tell he wouldn't use that world at all number 31 the ending to the beta trailer for the game showed an alternate logo the word Kingdom is shown in normal golden text while the word Hearts is displayed in a modified version of the final logo spikey tanks the trademark heart was also missing from this version of the logo number 32 some of the assets that didn't fit into Kingdom Hearts also included enemies the enemy assault Rider was meant to appear in the game but its style didn't fit into any of the world so it was removed and used in Kingdom Hearts 2 instead number 33 Arial was originally meant to be a princess of heart but in order for her to be captured by Maleficent the story portion of Ursula giving her legs would have to have taken place first so the producers chose Alice as a princess of heart which garnered fan outrage because she's not technically a Disney Princess however after finding out the Troublesome production of the game the fans forgave the game developers number 34 another piece of removed content was a possible summon from Toy Story Woody and Buzz were modeled in the game and their tipos models can be found on the game's disk but for whatever reason it was never used in the game number 35 the murderer is ultimate goal for this project with simply connections he believes that people aren't physically connected and said that even apart things which are connected are still connected what does that mean number 36 the main theme song for Kingdom Hearts was written and performed by Japanese popstar boo tada he caught it the main theme for Kingdom Hearts would be known as Hikari and would later be used and we makes for future Kingdom Hearts games the song has an English counterpart entitled simple and clean for use in North American and European releases matada was the only singer tensie Enomoto had in mind for the first Kingdom Hearts team song number 37 this marked the first time you tada had produced a song for a video game the song had notable popularity in Japan he kotti placed on weekly Oricon charts at number one in 2002 number 38 the English version of a game same song simple and clean uses a different melody for the chorus in the Japanese version however the original melody can still be heard in the US version during the instrumental played over the credits sequence number 39 when Kingdom Hearts was released in North America who Tata performed the song simple and clean this was one of atados first performances outside of Japan she originally had plans to promote the song between 2002 and 2003 but she halted all promotional activities due to her diagnosis of a benign ovarian tumor which was surgically removed that same year that's kind of like too much information though number 40 the music for the series was primarily composed by Yoko Shimomura you can thank her for dearly beloved and blast away number 41 before composing for Kingdom Hearts Yoko shimamoto worked for Capcom she wanted to compose music for RPGs and was attracted to Capcom's Breath of Fire but she was only put in charge of one piece so after that she left Capcom and took squares entrance exam number 42 when writing the music she reverted to Kingdom Hearts heavy story and made songs that balance light and dark Nomura told her that he wanted something like birdies Requiem so she composed the song to Scotty number 43 the music of Kingdom Hearts has become so recognized throughout the years fans and music lovers alike call it the shimmer mortis tile when she started to make the music of Kingdom Hearts shimmer Mordor was set on making individuality a key theme but she didn't even realize how much that stood out in her music until people started naming the music after her when asked which track she loved the most she picked the title track dearly beloved number 44 even though the music in Kingdom Hearts sounds amazing all of the music was actually synthesized featuring minimal live instruments recording number 45 Cowell wada worked as the arranger for orchestral music including orchestral renditions of the main vocal themes and the ending theme the orchestral music was reformed by the new Japan Philharmonic Orchestra and the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra number 46 square held a contest Disney was planning on making an animated series based off of the game despite the first draft of the show turning out well the show was never made this was likely because they plan to continue the story with more games rather than an animation number 48 Kingdom Hearts received positive reviews and sales figures during the first two months of its North American release it was one of the top three highest selling video games and was among the top selling titles during the 2002 holiday season number 49 the Kingdom Hearts series has been critically and commercially successful as a March the ps2 beating out other popular ps2 exclusives such as the God of War series jak and Daxter series and the Ratchet and Clank series number 53 the game was adapted into a manga by sheet aluminum the version were also included the manga was released in Japan first and was later released worldwide in for volume number 54 the volumes have been published in English in the United States by Tokyopop the first volume was released in 2005 and the last was released in 2006 the entire series was later put out as a box set in October 2006 number 55 the manga series has had moderate success when it was figurine inside Ariel's Grotto will play the melody who am i from the final fantasy 7 soundtrack number 64 the pride lands were originally going to be a playable level which Sora turning into alliance Rico on top of Big Ben in Neverland the scene doesn't appear in the final game nor does Riku ever go to Big Ben in any way it's considered canon as a cutscene in Kingdom Hearts re:coded shows that
