[Music] [Music] yes [Music] [Music] is [Music] r [Music] ah [Music] [Music] oh we are [Music] oh [Music] r [Music] uh [Music] uh [Music] [Music] [Music] me [Music] in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit [Music] peace welcome to said mary's cathedral in sydney for the solemn mass of the fifth sunday of lent a celebration falls between the great feast of the annunciation when god became a human embryo in the womb of his blessed mother and the solemnity of saint joseph protector of the unborn lord and his mother so today is a fitting sunday in which to celebrate the day of the unborn praising god for the great gift of human life and remembering those who have died without ever seeing the light of day the inclement weather has somewhat curtailed these commemorations about which more after holy communion i welcome today can celebrating with me bishop richard umbers auxiliary bishop of sydney very reverend michael de stoop rector of the seminary of the good shepherd with priests from his staff and seminarians from that seminary as this week is the final straight before holy week let's make the most of the time that is left to us for fasting prayer and charity ask god to prepare you for the great feasts ahead and for your final eastering when we will in jesus words today regain our life eternally following him out of the grave and into heaven to everyone present physically or virtually a very warm welcome prepare ourselves to celebrate these sacred mysteries let us call to mind our sins i confess to almighty god and to you my brothers and sisters that i have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words in what i have done and in what i have failed to do through my fault through my fault through my most grievous fault therefore i ask blessed mary of a virgin all the angels and saints and you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the lord our god may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] let us pray by your help we beseech you lord our god may we walk eagerly in that same charity with which out of love for the world your son handed himself over to death through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god for ever and ever a reading from the book of the prophet jeremiah see the days are coming it is the lord who speaks when i will make a new covenant with the house of israel and the house of judah but not a covenant like the one i made with their ancestors on the day i took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of egypt they broke that covenant of mine so i had to show them who was master it is the lord who speaks no this is the covenant i will make with the house of israel when those days arrive it is the lord who speaks deep within them i will plant my law writing it on their hearts then i will be their god and they shall be my people there will be no further need for neighbor to try to teach neighbor or brother to say to brother learn to know the lord no they will all know me the least not less than the greatest it is the lord who speaks since i will forgive their iniquity and never call their sin to mind the word of the lord [Music] is [Music] is [Music] [Music] oh [Music] uh [Music] [Music] is [Music] oh a reading from the letter to the hebrews during his life on earth christ offered up prayer and entreaty aloud and in silent tears to the one who had the power to save him out of death and he submitted so humbly that his prayer was heard although he was son he learnt to obey through suffering but having been made perfect he became for all who obey him the source of eternal salvation the word of the lord hey [Music] [Music] oh [Music] [Music] yes [Music] oh the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to john [Music] oh among those who went up to worship at the festival were some greeks these approached philip who came from bedsider in galilee and put this request to him so we would like to see jesus philip went to tell andrew and andrew and philip together went to tell jesus jesus replied to them now the hour has come for the son of man to be glorified i tell you more solemnly unless a weed grain falls on the ground and dies it remains only a single grain but if it dies it yields a rich harvest anyone who loves his life loses it anyone who hates his life in this world will keep it for the eternal life if a man serves me he must follow me wherever i am my servant will be there too if anyone serves me my father will honor him now my soul is troubled what shall i say father save me from this hour but it was for this very reason that i came to this hour father glorify your name a voice came from heaven i have glorified it and i will glorify it again people standing by who heard this said said it was a collapse of sunder others said it was an angel speaking to him jesus answered it was not for my sake that this voice came but for yours now sentence is being passed on this world now the prince of this world is to be overthrown and when i am lifted from the earth i shall draw all men to myself by these words he indicated the kind of death he would die the gospel of the lord so a while back an eclectic spanish art collection was offered for auction by christie's in london the standout item was a life-sized painting of saint joseph and the christ child by the 17th century painter bartolome mouriel estimated to be worth millions of pounds with a credible naturalism and visionary other worldliness murillo offers not the elderly gentleman of earlier iconography but a virile handsome joseph resembling the adult christ here he holds the hand of his preschool age son to present him to the viewer the boy is clearly copying his father's stance and in perfect parallel the two gaze at us serious even sorrowful some of us have great fathers or stepfathers some more ordinary ones and still others sadly have had abusive or absent fathers joseph was in the first category if the happiness and holiness of his wife and child are any indication at a time when people worry about toxic masculinity and wonder what a healthy manhood might look like the gospels offer the model of joseph a just or righteous man pious and law abiding prayerful and obedient a dreamer yet practical steadfast and caring protective of the ones he loves though from a noble pedigree descending from israel's patriarchs kings prophets and priests he was a humble woodworker or builder when first we meet him joseph is betrothed to young mary humiliated by finding she is pregnant without him he would not shame her as well and so resolved to hide her away quietly it took an angel to clear things up instead of some lame excuse the angel proclaimed the doctrine of the incarnation your wife has conceived what is in her by the holy spirit great theologians have struggled to unpack this ever since but the carpenter simply accepted it on faith and did as he was told he married mary and took her son as his own we have only glimpses of joseph after that at the nativity the presentation the flight into egypt the finding in the temple he gives the boy his surname bar joseph and adds his christian name suggested by an angel jesus savior from our sins as an observant jew he has the boy circumcised make sacrifice for him in the temple and takes the family up to jerusalem each year for the passover jesus we're told was obedient to him and under his guidance grew in strength wisdom and stature presumably he shared with jesus his craft having witnessed what angels shepherds magi and priests said about him joseph joined mary in marveling at it all from just a few gospel verses then we build up a picture of joseph and glimpse something of his private life with jesus as in maria's painting we have intimations of the love between stepfather and son and their influence upon each other some of the qualities of jesus the man his strength and tenderness justice but mercy compassion and obedience were surely learnt at joseph's knee in his recent letter patrice corday pope francis proclaimed a year of saint joseph and gave us his own impressions of the man speaking from the long catholic tradition he recalls that christians have venerated joseph with innumerable prayers feasts cities named after him churches statues and groups dedicated to him as well as religious orders like our own josephite sisters of mary mckillip joseph is patron of the church of fathers and of unborn children of immigrants workers and a happy death he is the chaste spouse of mary guardian of the redeemer and beloved father he is holy joseph saint john henry newman said because his office of being spouse and protector of mary specially demanded sanctity he is holy joseph because no other saint but he lived in such and so long intimacy and familiarity with the source of all holiness jesus god incarnate and mary the holiest of creatures and so christians have turned to him as the egyptians who when hungary were told by pharaoh go to joseph do what he says yosef reflecting upon the pandemic pope francis notes that the hidden people may not make the headlines but often make the difference health care workers store keepers cleaners caregivers transport workers parents teachers pastors and other essential service workers each of us can discover in joseph he says in the man who goes unnoticed a daily discreet and hidden presence an intercessor and support a guide in times of trouble saints teresa of avila madeleine sophie barat peter julian aymard and mary mckillip all recommended joseph as a companion when discerning our vocation sin bernadette called him the master of prayer since francis de sales the model of humility saint jose maria escrivar the teacher of the interior life saint thomas aquinas said that most saints are intercessors for some class of needs but our holy patrons and joseph has the power to assist us in all cases in every necessity in every undertaking joseph's hidden role the holy father suggests following sin john chrysostom and saint paul vi was to put himself at the service of the entire plan of salvation by turning his human vocation to domestic love into a superhuman oblation of himself as a lord had done with israel so joseph did with jesus he said he taught him to walk taught him took him by the hand he was for him like a father who raises an infant to his cheeks bending down to him and feeding him in joseph jesus saw the tender love of god pope francis's beautiful letter is well worth a prayerful read in our first reading today god promises he will one day make a new covenant with his people planted so deep in their hearts that they will be his people and he will be their god in joseph that promise was at last fulfilled for he is representative of the old testament told in the genealogies and his association with the law and the temple yet he is also the first agent of the new testament which opens with the annunciation to joseph by an angel joseph then is situated at the very cusp he is the hinge between the old testament and the new and it hit in him we see at last the fidelity of god and israel sealed deep in a heart in patrice corday a father's heart in the days ahead our gospel text will come to fruition jesus will be glorified as he is lifted up glorified in his death as much as in his life as the divine seed he will die and be sown in the ground only to shoot anew from the tomb bringing other shoots with him so that there is a huge harvest of many souls if you are troubled like jesus in our gospel because of struggles in your life or in our world know that like him you are made for this hour and that in persevering faithfully you will be glorified as he was but like the unborn lord now also you have a protector in joseph and that means like muriel's joseph you can be the one to present jesus to others so joseph patron of the universal church pray for us so joseph protector of the holy family pray for us saint joseph guardian of the unborn pray for us i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen by dying to self we are born to eternal life in that spirit of self-denial and penance let us come to our father in oh [Music] to see more [Music] at our rally today rebecca gospel was to speak to us so rebec beck if you're here please come forward and everyone else please sit down thank you archbishop for that kind introduction and thank you to paul hanrahan and his team for organizing such a wonderful event i know it wasn't the event that any of us here imagined it would be today but i think we can all agree that it has been really beautiful and such an inspiring time of prayer for us all and thank you to all of you for being here today in person despite the weather not just to support another ministry charity or good cause but to support what i believe and i'm sure you do as well to be the most important cause possible how we choose to treat the most vulnerable among us the littlest ones the most precious ones unborn babies and their mothers these two these children are our future and there is nothing more important that we could be fighting for i'm the managing director of life choice australia where a nationwide movement of pro-life young adults who are committed to advocating for life starting from that first moment our students are out on the front lines at the universities to speak about the beauty of human life and the devastation and heartbreak that comes with abortion and maybe this sounds nice and fun in theory but in reality it is hard so hard our students are subject to the most vile threats and actions you've probably gotten a taste of it from hearing the protesters outside today but through all of this we just get stronger because we know that we're fighting for something greater the greatest thing you possibly could life and i know that all of you here today see this too we're all here today yes to celebrate life but also to grieve the lives lost for far too long many of our politicians have given up their responsibility to protect the vulnerable to protect human life and instead have been backing abortion on demand and allowing the abortion industry to thrive all at the expense of innocent human lives every year in australia we lose about 60 000 lives to abortion that's one baby every six minutes and not only is that precious child lost but the impacts reach much further the mother the father the grandparents the siblings who now mourn the loss of these children through this terrible violence a violence which is completely preventable that we can completely stop if we have the laws in society that chooses to truly support women and families and protect life last year a brave girl named anna reached out to me she had had an abortion the year before and she wanted to share her story so in less than 24 hours anna had found out that she was pregnant booked an abortion and her boyfriend was now driving her to the abortion facility she wasn't even sure that that was what she wanted she booked the abortion more out of fear than anything because her boyfriend didn't want the baby when she arrived for her appointment anna met with one of the abortion facilities counsellors and she told the councillor that she wasn't sure about her decision the counselor's response was would you rather lose your future and your family or have this baby would you rather lose your future and your family or have this baby and i felt so lost and unsure and she went into the abortionist room where he did an ultrasound and ana saw the image of her unborn baby on the screen and broke down in tears and she told me that she knew instantly that she loved this baby but she didn't know how she could do it she didn't have the support in place so the abortionist saw anna's hesitation and instead of reacting with compassion he berated her for wasting his time she sent him out of his office into the room next door with her boyfriend who wanted her to have the abortion and in just 10 minutes her boyfriend convinced her to go ahead anna's last thought before the anesthetic put her to sleep was i have made a mistake and that happened in the abortion facility right across the road from where we would have been today if it weren't for the rain right across from parliament that is where anna was pressured and coerced into an unwanted abortion and i wish i was surprised but we should all know now that what we're dealing with is an abortion industry an abortion business their purpose is to make money not to help women and children the reality is that one in four of my generation is missing because of abortion because of abortion businesses like that one but the good news is that we can turn this around maybe there's only a few hundred of us here today but you're part of a movement of millions of people around the globe so i want to encourage you if you're willing to be brave if as you are by being here today despite the awful weather to raise your voice and speak the truth and to fight to support those who are in need in our communities and fight to change the law to make new south wales to make australia a place of safety and peace for children if you're willing to do the work despite the backlash then we will win because ultimately we have love on our side a love that comes first from god and then each other saint augustine said that we go abroad to the heights of mountains the mighty waves of the sea the broad tides of rivers the compass of the ocean and the circuits of the stars yet pass over the mystery of ourselves without a thought and how true this is we spend so much time admiring natural beauty and the bravery of those who have gone before us and these are good things but in reality we are the most precious thing we are unique and unrepeatable and if there is anything that we can do to save even just one life then isn't it worth it isn't everything that we're doing worth it so i encourage you to educate yourselves to get activated to turn up and most importantly to pray and as we do those things we will rebuild a culture of life not just here in sydney but gradually around the world thank you to every single one of you for being here today for everything that you do to support women children and families we are so blessed to have you as a part of this movement thank you and please continue to be involved we need your prayer and your action thank you thank you beck and my thanks to all those who belong to your group to paul also our organizer and all those in his group for any of you from any of the pro-life or pregnancy help groups around this city state and nation i saw the honorable fred nile for any pro-life politicians for anybody in our community who's represented here today standing up for the unborn for human life at every stage for pregnant women in distress and their husbands or partners too we pray for all of them that they may treasure the gift of human life and i thank god for each one of you that you care so passionately about this and that you've joined us in our prayers given a certain noise going on outside it's perhaps been a good thing to have our own place of peace to contemplate the beauty of human life and to pray to god for all our needs it's a strange situation isn't it that people are free to stand outside our cathedral and make as much noise and be as intimidating as they like but if we went near an abortion clinic and prayed in silence we'd be arrested and find and even imprisoned it seems as only one place that's sacred in our city at the moment and that's the abortion clinics of our city that has to change my friends that has to change and by your prayers and your witness for life our culture will change to be that great civilization of life and love that we're called as christians to make it god bless you each one of you [Music] glorious [Music] oh [Music] you
