how do you feel about exploring an uninhabited island or checking the beach for tons of treasures today i'm going to explore kais island and i invite you to come along and enjoy some beautiful scenery and i promise by the end of this video you will know how to identify a lace mirrors and a gaudy nautica so let's go to the beach [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] okay guys today we are headed over to caice island and i am at caxambas marina right now before we head out now let's take a look at kais island it is not inhabited there is no is there it literally is just one of the islands part of the 10 000 island system so this is where i'm going to be today the boat dropped us off right about there and then this area here is where we are going to be spending our time let me tell you how i got there though so i'm at the caxambus marina and a lot of the different tours come out of this marina and i booked a trip with florida adventures and rentals now i took the 8 30 to 130 trip it cost 48.15 so extremely reasonable but i will kind of forewarn you this is more for someone who is a little bit more experienced don't do this by yourself for the first time you are going to be on an island with zero facilities zero help and there will be no boat waiting for you so you're on your own just make sure you keep that in mind so the first thing we find is a ribbed cantharis kind of a cool little shell that looks like a bunch of other cool little shells but that's a ribbed cantharis now at this point the tide is coming in and it's always a good idea just to kind of understand what's going on with the tide when you're in a situation like this okay here is our first gotti nautica so that is a colorful moon snail and we're going to talk about those because i find quite a few so it is just beautiful it was actually supposed to rain so i definitely have my eye on my weather app as we're meandering on this island here i have a lightning whelk a fine shell yay okay that is a spiny jewel box and it's hinged which i do not find often so i thought that was super duper cool and a florida fighting well that is probably going to be one of the only ones we're going to see today because i learned my lesson they're quite heavy so i am not starting my day by picking up any of the florida fighting conchs so we just started i literally just got here picked up a couple of those shells and that island across the way that was dickman's but we are over here on kais okay our first banded tulip although i'm always looking at the opening because that always tends to get chewed up a little bit oh and finally finally i found a true tulip all right we are going to compare now a banded tulip and a true tulip so the banded tulip is on the bottom you'll see that they're essentially shaped very similar the banded tulip though has that very deliberate equidistant dark bands across it the true tulip it's got lighter bands it's still a little bit striped but they are different so i i tend to kind of look for those bands that's really a good indication so that one is the true and that one is a banded and it is hard because they do like i said have essentially the same exact shape but they are two different snails oh and i'm so excited because there's just so much stuff on the beach like i said tide's coming in so right now it's pushing things up hopefully not taking them away whoa okay that is for all intent purposes a giant crown conch collar is not great but it's in decent shape oh man that's cool i'm keeping that that's a huge crown conch and a little horse conch okay a little bit beat up it's got like stuff on it it's a little chewed up but still oh what a pretty shape i'm gonna try to clean it up i'm gonna keep that so there's lots of goodies here oh that is a broken paper fig what else we got all right an apple muric's i'm gonna find a couple of those today as well so this is very exciting and totally not normal here's a crown conch although it very beat up it is not necessarily normal to just have piles and piles of shells everywhere there's another horse conk with a little bit of beach stuff on it no problem that should pick right off and okay we have an apple mirex that's a little bit more squat it's got it's a got vibrant color we'll find a bunch oh and this beautiful little sand dollar oh it's perfect all right that's going to go in my little special box so it doesn't get crushed and here is another spiny jewel box not too spiky but still very cool and a pear welk i almost said channeled wealth but we don't really get them down here that is a pear whelk and a nutmeg with fantastic collar a little bit of beach stuff that should pick right off and here we have another banded tulip those are much easier to find than the true tulips all right here we have nice lettered olive some cool lettering marks on there all right here is another gaudy nautica so you'll see that it is almost always kind of that yellowish brown color with different stripes on it we'll find more don't worry okay here is a lace mirrex oh man there's just i'm gonna clean it up there's all sorts of stuff on there i'm gonna keep that here's another one of those banded tulips and the aperture the opening is not broken super duper happy about that here is another one of those lace mirex shells it see has kind of got frills on it got little appendages oh so pretty i wanted to give you an idea where it's hard to shoot and kind of show you what's going on the beach and then kind of where how close to the water i am so pretty close to the water just kind of staying in this particular rack lined the fresh shells so there's water really close right there oh what a nice day so still keeping my eye on the weather but i think we're gonna look out because you never know another pair welk oh pretty color oh awesome awesome awesome pair welcome and one bend down two shells okay that is a beat up lace mirrex it's missing some pieces bummer not gonna keep that but here we have another one of those banded tulips oh it's not broken awesome terrific banded tulip and another oh see what i mean that one's broken on the side okay lightning well oh nice dark color full of sand so nobody's home very that's definitely keeper very cool shell and another lace mirrors again a bunch of beach stuff on it but i'm gonna i'm gonna keep it anyway all right here's another colorful moon snail and you see it kind of has those different variations like almost like stripes on it there's another one we're going to find a bunch and so it really very different from the shark eye it's the same they're like cousins but same shape different colors and another lightning whelk cool shell because they open on the left and there's another lace mirror x oh and a cone oh man that is awesome a fantastic florida cone a little bit bigger than i normally find them too that is a great find another parawhile now that it's very unusual i don't usually find multiple pear whelks so super cool lettered olive so we not uh not too hard to find shells today they were just everywhere another beautiful banded tulip and another i was checking that okay it's intact that opening awesome love the colors of those it's not really funny so that's another lace muric's they were just everywhere it was so cool here's another florida cone no i i've never seen a live cone never seen when they tend to live in the deeper water and here we have an apple murex you'll see compared to the lace mirrors it's got a lot more browns a lot more richer colors to it here's another one of those gaudi's again with those dark the stripes and the variations you will not find that on the regular moon snail oh my gosh another pairwilk very very cool he's a little beat up i'm going to keep it anyway because it's awesome and a little lightning well see how that opens on the left you'll notice most of the other well actually all the other shells i pick up the opening is on the right see like this like the tulip see there the opening was on the right it's another little banded tulip no shortage of those today okay oh it's just beautiful all right we'll stop for a minute now see what i mean vertically there's you almost see those like stripes going through it so if you wanted to know the difference between a guy nautica and a shark eye same shape totally different coloring murax and apple murex so again kind of cousins to the lace mirrors but they're still different that's another apple they tend to have those darker colors and they won't have those like frilly extensions what oh yeah i was in tulip heaven today okay there is a lace and you'll see what see those frilly extensions kind of coming off the shell so that is a lace here is a lightning whelk and you'll notice the opening is on the left it's called a sinister shell they are different and special another gaudy little beat up another cone oh cool oh well i'm down here okay figured i'd at least check it out guys it was silly how many lace mirrors there were oh so cool that one even has a little pink on top and then this band-aid tulip and another lace muric's all right we've been doing a lot of work here let's let's just relax for a minute all right back to the shells oh another pretty banded tulip they come in lighter to darker colors that's i like the darker variation ones actually i kind of like them all what am i saying all right there's another gaudy ah it's new it's got we found about a billion so far had a couple holes this was interesting i was trying i couldn't quite figure out now is that a discolored base scallop it's got the right shape it's not a calico and then those ridges i couldn't quite figure out exactly what that was so here we are we're making our way up the beach look at this crazy pile oh gee that's weird the lace mirrors now see what i mean with the frills on it it's a little bit elongated it's not as squat as the apple murex there's another lace with stuff on it i did have to do a lot of cleaning but it was worth it here we have another banded tulip all right checking to make see if it's cracked or not no it looks pretty good oh well it's a little beat up i don't know if i kept that or not that one i kept pretty pretty lightning well probably not the little guy i'll just keep the big guy gorgeous look at this like the teeniest tiniest little lightning welcome oh so cute oh and an angel wing well that's fun it's intact very nice no holes or anything they're relatively delicate kind of hard to find in one piece okay another banded tool i'm tiptoeing through the tulips today and the gories and the lace tiptoeing through a couple of shells oh look and has not that natural shine to it that god is so pretty and then here we have another lace he kept a little bit of pink on top really cool another gaudy they were just jumping out at me all over the place fantastic day for gutty nauticus oh look at the color on that one oh man really nice and another cone another florida cone so i want to just give you an idea of how many just treasures are everywhere all right looks like little little top snail missing a top missing the top of the tops now here we have a lightning milk and okay we have all right a little beat up bandit oh but look i went to look for the tulip ended up spying this apple mirax real pretty what else we got all right a lace mirex all right looks like i'm going for an olive yep a lettered olive and a banded tulip so guys that took 53 seconds to pick up all those shells always fun fun day all right here's another apple a little bit more squat than the lace nice coloring on it a little bit of beach stuff i'm gonna clean that up though oh man so we got so far weather is holding off not too bad at all and at this point the tide is finally starting to go out a wee little apple mirrex oh and a lace and i love some of them will have kind of like a pink on top look how frilly oh beautiful beautiful lace mirrors yep stuff everywhere look it's can't hide from me buddy oh gorgeous gorgeous scotty nautica it's just beautiful out and there's just shells everywhere oh little broken horse conk and a little buried now that i think is an albino ribbed cantharis that's what i'm thinking that guy is and i was a little top sale with some stuff on it another little lace yep it's a good day to be on this island all right another little banded tulip another little lace mirrors oh pretty top on that a little bit of pink so just showing you what is left here now that the tide is going out ah it's so fun what do i spy all right looks like i got a little calico scallop now obviously there's a lot of the commons made there and you're always going to see the commons the clams and things of that nature but just because it was kind of a special shelling day for me i wasn't going to monkey around too much oh an apple mirex with more of the common stuff that maybe i normally would and really kind of hear going looking for things that aren't as plentiful when i go on regular shelling on a beach but when you're on an island i guess you can be a little bit picky and i did manage to see some critters these are cloudy periwinkle snails and they're just beautiful really pretty coloring i don't think i think maybe i've found two of those shells i do not find those often and this area is normally where somewhere i might dig because it looks like there might be some stuff buried in there but since i only found a you know a beat up tulip i figured you know what i'm finding enough stuff on the beach so i'm just going to keep doing what i'm doing but you know if something's poking out i'm gonna pick it up here we have yet another pair wilk not in perfect shape but good enough definitely gonna keep that so this is just an idea pretty close to the water here and look another lace mirex i've never had a day like today i i usually feel really lucky if i find one or maybe two but to find this many was just outstanding now here's one that's not quite as lacy still a lace mirror though so if you see one that looks like that that is a lace mirror oh it's that is a lightning welcome and you know what i found a bunch of decent ones so that one i'm gonna leave on the beach another gaudy nautica uh another late i mean it was insanity in a good way there are great shells everywhere oh oh hi apple mirrex just sitting there you got some beach stuff on you oh hello tulip since you're right there too so here we have a banded tulip and an apple murex little tops now and this time this top snail has its top nobody's home that is a keeper oh and another oh that's normally how i find the banded tulips i just kind of hold them like that and they're just fine another lace well this one's broken that is a broken lace murix but that that is a well yeah that's broken too that's an apple mirrors a little bit beat up but here it's i don't know what happened i had no idea it was lace muric's day on kai's island but i guess it was yep lace mirrex beautiful little top on it so back a little bit away from the water was just crazy amounts of shells and it went back for a while and yeah for a distance it went back quite a distance so there were just shells everywhere and i'm doing pretty good where i am so probably not going to explore too much in the upper rack lines and at this point we have been together for a while so we are going to finish the walk next week but i do want to give you just a tiny little preview of how insane the day was this is not what my shell haul usually looks like so we're going to continue next week and we'll go through all the goodies thank you patreons thank you so much for supporting me and allowing me to do things like this and go out
