here we go again Easley dreamers with 10 very British adjectives if you haven't met me before my name is Tom and I teach fresh modern British English so that you could take your English to the next level and achieve your life goals today we're looking at 10 very British adjectives if you're ready let's get going number one peckish peckish this means a little bit hungry you're not starving you're just a little bit hungry so you're peckish let's put that into an example sentence I'm feeling a bit peckish so I'm going to grab a snack do you want something I'm feeling a bit peckish so I'm going to grab a snack do you want something all right so I'm feeling a bit peckish peckish number two is ruff ruff now the GH there that is that sound that so it's ruff ruff has a couple of different meanings we're going to just look at two today the first one is to feel a bit ill to be a bit sick so feeling a bit rough it means yeah I feel ill I feel sick now kind of connected to that is that when we're hungover after a night out we can also describe ourselves as feeling a bit rough or feeling really rough today now that is probably you feel a bit ill and you have a headache however but it's because of alcohol so that's the main reason why you feel rough so it could be genuinely that you feel sick or it could be that you're because of alcohol you feel sick ruff so a nice informal adjective ruff let's look at the example sentence um a I'm feeling really rough this morning how I'm feeling really rough this morning now it's important to mention right now that all these words are very informal so they're used commonly in spoken English but they were pretty and full so think about the situation that you're using your English in and then decide if these words are appropriate for that situation so again like a formal business meeting I wouldn't be using these words okay but yeah okay let's move on to number three I love this one this is great gutted gutted the IDI there is it some gutted gutted this means very disappointed very disappointed she's gutted that she didn't get the job yeah she's gutted that she didn't get the job number four pissed off pissed off this is quite rude okay so be careful about where you use this one if you're pissed off you are angry okay so for example my flatmates really pissed off that I forgot his birthday my flatmates really pissed off that I forgot his birthday so he's really angry that I forgot his birthday if you want to add an object into their sentence you could say he's really pissed off with me that I forgot his birthday he's really pissed off with me that I forgot his birthday so you're pissed off with someone you're pissed off with someone number five naked naked let's try that one again knackered all right this is very tired if you're really tired you've had a long day at work you get home and you're like ah naked I am naked it means you're very tired I'm naked now British English we have so many words to describe being drunk I guess it's a cultural thing but we use a lot of different words loads of slang words that we could look at in fact I'll do a blog on that at some point but the one I want to look at right now is pissed it's similar to pissed off but you take the awful way and it means to be drunk yeah I'm feeling a bit rough today I've got quite pissed last night I'm feeling quite rough today I've got quite pissed last night all right so pissed there means drunk now as I said we've got lots of different ways a couple of other ones and plasters that's quite a nice one plastered wasted I got absolutely wasted last night hammered as well it means very drunk you are hammered last night you are hammered last night it means very drunk and one other one I quite like it's got a rude words so I'm not going to say it but s faced you were entered last night you were last night yeah alright so this one's very rude be careful when you use that probably just with your very close friends but yeah it's a good one very drunk that's what it means number seven is hard hard now this of course has many different meanings the meaning that I want to focus on is the informal adjective that means kind of tough or doesn't like to show any weakness we usually describe people like this so if you're quite hard you're not scared you could probably fight pretty well yeah you're a bit of a tough person you have to be pretty hard to get into the special Armed Forces you have to be pretty hard to get into the special Armed Forces now hardened by sometimes be a part of the phrase so hard as nails hard as nails look at that security guard he looks hard as nails so look at that security guard he looks hard as nails number eight chuffed chuffed that's a nice one chuffed now the easy there is a Tercel chuffed chuffed ok what does this mean well it means very pleased or very happy about something I'm really chuffed that you can come to my party I'm really chuffed that you can come to my party so I'm really pleased that you can come to my party chuffed I like that one number nine is great it has three different meanings so the word is dodgy dodgy let's try and say that again dodgy okay now the three different meanings well one meaning is to be potentially dangerous so we describe maybe an area or a neighborhood as being a bit dodgy like don't go into that area it's a bit dodgy like don't go to that area it's a bit dodgy okay so potentially dangerous that's the first meaning second meaning could be dishonest or untrustworthy so you might describe a person as being a bit dodgy so I'm really don't like my landlord he's really dodgy so I really don't like my landlord he's a bit dodgy so he's a bit untrustworthy unreliable dishonest yeah that kind of thing and a third meaning could be of low quality the example sentence I've had a lot of dodgy haircuts in my time I had a lot of dodgy haircuts in my time true story I mean that is a true story so a lot of bad quality haircuts all right so the three meetings again were so potentially dangerous dishonest or untrustworthy or bad quality it's a great way three different meanings the same word dodgy and the last one I've saved the best for last I love this one jammie-jammie this means lucky ok if you are jammy you are lucky for example Mannion is called such a jamming goal at the end Man United's called such a jamming goal at the end see it maybe was a very lucky goal we might describe a person as being jammy in fact I think when we're in very informal English you might use a kind of a bit of a rude word after so you jammy mmm is such a jammy mmm maybe your friend there's just one a small amount on the lottery you got hi you Jerry mmm and it just means that you lucky so-and-so see ya it's used in affection in an affectionate way I'm not saying in a rude way but I am using slightly rude words there so yeah you jammy hmm just means you lucky person all right those were ten very British
