family on february 4th 2010 40 year old joseph mcstay his wife 43 year old summer and their two preschool aged sons gianni and joey jr disappeared from their fallbrook california home their cherished family dogs were left outside in the cold and food was left on the counter half prepared but where did they go how does a family just vanish joseph was apparently well liked and ran a successful water fountain business with an associate summer was a real estate agent it seemed like they would be back any minute but after a couple of weeks no one had heard from them and family members were extremely concerned there was no sign of a struggle in the home or forced entry shortly thereafter the mcstays vehicle was discovered abandoned near the u.s mexico border leading investigators to suspect that they had deliberately left the country but why they had one hundred thousand dollars in their bank account that hadn't been touched an international search failed to find the family who remained missing for the next three years and nine months it was quite the mystery especially to joseph's mother there was just no way the family would leave and take the grandchildren and never call one day a dirt biker found a human skeleton in the desert authorities uncovered the remains of all four family members who were tragically beaten to death as well as a sledgehammer buried along with them charles or chase merritt joseph mcstay's business partner and the last known person to have seen the deceased man was arrested for the murders numerous small signs pointed toward him as a viable suspect including writing a book about his supposed theories like that summer was poisoning her husband he spoke about joseph in the past tense even though no one knew for sure that he was dead but the most incriminating evidence was the discovery of his dna in the family's car and his cell phone giving signals near the family's burial site merit was found guilty of the crime and was sentenced to death last year he continues to assert his innocence and challenge his conviction prosecutors argue his motive was greed and that he had been embezzling from the family for years joseph confronted him and somehow merit was able to make the entire family disappear 9. craig williamson in a mystifying missing persons case that was featured on the long-running unsolved mysteries television series angela reinhardt last heard from her husband craig williamson on august 30th 1993 during a fishing trip to colorado springs williamson called reinhardt at the couple's wisconsin home from his hotel room around 9 30 p.m and everything seemed fine then he seemingly disappeared off the face of the planet reinhardt was admittedly worried about her husband traveling as he'd suffered a concussion just weeks earlier williamson never arrived home the next day as planned and reinhardt's credit cards were discovered 675 miles south of colorado springs in el paso texas the man's rental car was discovered in juarez mexico two weeks later bearing no signs of foul play as the authorities scrambled to track down williamson reinhardt began her own investigation first visiting the hotel her husband had stayed at in colorado springs she learned that williamson had left his luggage behind with no evidence of struggle and continued to believe that he had wandered off perhaps due to the effects of his recent concussion and had maybe gotten hurt williamson was living in key west florida in july 1995 when he spotted himself on an unsolved mysteries rerun can you imagine he contacted the show and explained that he developed amnesia after being mugged in colorado springs and remembered almost nothing from before the attack the man claims to have awoken in the hospital under the name ron thereafter aimlessly wandering the u.s until he settled in key west as a diver williamson reunited with reinhardt but his memory of her supposedly failed to return and the couple divorced authorities remained suspicious that the man staged his disappearance to free himself of his debts and other obligations as a business owner and start fresh what do you think let me know in the comments below number 8. david lee niles a 72 year old michigan man named david lee niles disappeared one night in 2006. shortly after being diagnosed with cancer and while suffering from depression he abruptly exited a bar after meeting with a family friend and for nearly the next decade he remained missing with no apparent clues to his whereabouts niall's family had all but given up by 2011 when they assumed the worst had happened and published an obituary online despite nobody having been found in 2015 a worker named brian houseman who is in a cherry picker decorating a giant outdoor christmas tree spotted a sunken car in a nearby pond about a half mile from where niles was last seen after double checking the car's presence using google maps police commissioned a wrecking crew to retrieve the submerged vehicle and discovered skeletal human remains in the front seat which they tentatively identified as niles by his wallet and id after 10 years it seems that niles took his own life as foul play was not suspected however his cause of death remains undetermined number 7. margot freshwater margot freshwater a columbus ohio teen was convicted of first-degree murder in 1970. she was just 18 when the crime occurred dating an attorney 20 years older than her who went on a three-state robbery and killing spree while being escorted by an unarmed prison guard she scaled a fence and fled the tennessee state prison for women nobody knowingly saw or heard from her again for the next 32 years then in 2002 someone recognized freshwater as their neighbor tanya mccarter a seemingly inconspicuous mother of three living in the columbus area just 12 miles from where she grew up by then she was married with four children and seven grandchildren freshwater was thrown back into the tennessee state prison she escaped from at age 63 and had no choice but to face the consequences of her alleged actions her attorney argued that there was no way the truck-driving mother was an escaped killer to her luck the tennessee court of criminal appeals reversed freshwater's conviction and ordered a new trial a jailhouse informant got her off the hook by producing recorded evidence that freshwater's first husband whom she received her original first degree murder charge with acted alone number 6. carlos sanchez ortiz de salazar dr carlos was a gifted multilingual psychologist and physician from seville spain who vanished in 1996. the mild-mannered studious man stopped showing up for work and for the next 14 years his devastated family and friends searched desperately for him but their efforts were unsuccessful they remained dedicated to finding dr sanchez however even after the authorities gave up and labeled him as presumed dead five years later a group of hikers searching for mushrooms outside tuscany italy discovered a trail of garbage leading to a campsite containing a tent buckets for collecting rainwater and someone's belongings a dirty disheveled man with a long beard emerged from the tent unsure if he was dangerous the hikers left the scene and contacted a forest ranger to report what they had witnessed the forest ranger questioned the man who produced an id showing that he was the long-missing dr sanchez he had been living at the site unbothered since 1997 and wasn't happy about being found dr sanchez assured the forest ranger that he would be leaving now that he was discovered and sure enough that's just what he did after the ranger took photos of his id and left the doctor's elated family flew to italy to try making contact with him unfortunately by then he had disappeared from the campsite leaving behind his tent along with garbage and some belongings because dr sanchez disappeared voluntarily the local mayor announced that the authorities would keep an eye out for him but would not actively search for the man he has not been seen since this mystery like many led to more mysteries why did dr sanchez disappear in the first place and where did he go after the hikers discovered him at the very least it gave his family the slight closure i guess of knowing that he was still alive and that he vanished on his own accord but i don't think that would make them feel any better number 5. reyna marroquin when a man named ronald cohen sold his split level jericho new york home in september 1999 he discovered the mummified remains of a woman while moving a 55-gallon drum for the new homeowner like something out of a thriller the findings were quite horrific i actually saw this story in the investigation discovery channel and it was pretty scary forensic analysis showed that it was a pregnant woman and her unborn child along with the human remains were two rings a locket green dye and an address book containing a u.s permanent resident card belonging to a 28 year old el salvadorian woman named reina angelica marroquin who had worked at a synthetic flower factory in manhattan as autopsy results later revealed she died from blunt force trauma to the head somehow police were able to salvage the address book and actually find a number on it they called and reached kathy andrade a former friend of marroquin who explained that the young woman was having an affair with her married boss howard b elkins when she disappeared in 1969. the day before marroquin went missing she called andrade and explained that she feared for her life because she had told elkin's wife that she was pregnant with his child marroquin remained missing for the next three decades and the moment she was found and identified police suspected elkins the former homeowner where the drum was discovered of being involved in the crime elkins who is now 70 and living in south florida ended his life upon learning that someone had found marroquin he had kept the remains in his house the entire time and then sold it with them inside dna tests soon revealed a truth a man couldn't work around that he was the father of marroquin's unborn child no criminal charges were filed since the suspect was no longer alive leaving hurricane's devastated family with no choice but to sue elkin's estate in the hope of receiving some kind of justice number four gabriel nagy gabriel nagy a married father of two living in australia never came home for lunch on january 21 1987. his burned-out car was subsequently discovered on the roadside but nagy himself was nowhere to be found his heartbroken family eventually relocated making sure their number was in the phone book in case their missing husband and father was still alive and wanted to contact them two weeks before the government planned to declare nagy dead senior constable georgia robinson who had been searching tirelessly for the man for years decided to do one final sweep to see if anything turned up she was able to find a medicare record in nagi's name and tracked him down for questioning the past 23 years had been a blur for the man who remembered only sparse details like waking up one day with a horrifying head wound camping and sleeping on the beach and working odd jobs eventually a pastor took nagi in as caretaker of a church and helped him get a medicare card in his original name when he needed cataract surgery following robinson's discovery of the medicare record she visited nagi and showed him old photographs of his family causing previously untapped memories to flood into his mind after 23 years his family received a letter from him he maintains regular contact with his daughters whom he only knew as children as well as his wife it's likely that nagi suffered from an extreme version of something called dissociative fugue which is when someone loses an awareness of their identity and other important details often traveling to different places with no idea how they got there number three the buckskin girl in april 1981 the body of a young auburn-haired woman wearing a buckskin coat was discovered along a highway near troy ohio nicknamed the buckskin girl investigators determined that she had died recently just hours before but they had no idea who she was and the case quickly grew cold they had the body but no case really nothing had been reported an autopsy determined that the mysterious woman succumbed to strangulation and blunt force trauma a modern dna analysis of a blood sample which had sat in storage since she disappeared in 1981 led to the victim's identification 37 years later as 21 year old marsha l king of arkansas despite the tremendous progress authorities often make thanks to the advent of dna technology not all questions can be answered when it comes to the buckskin girl's death as of yet investigators are unable to determine her killer but at the very least her identity was returned to her number two pamela jackson and cheryl miller on may 29 1971 two 17-year-old vermillion south dakota women named pamela jackson and cheryl miller disappeared while enroute to a party in a 1960s studebaker lark nobody knew what happened to the girls and their disappearances remained a mystery for decades much to the world's surprise in 2007 a south dakota penitentiary inmate named david lyken was indicted on murder charges in connection with jackson and miller's disappearances but investigators determined that alleged recordings of lykan's confessions were faked and dropped the charges against him the following year in 2013 a studebaker containing human remains was pulled from brule creek after a passerby noticed the submerged vehicle thanks to low water levels and called authorities the remains were later identified as belonging to pamela and cheryl meaning their loved one's more than 40-year search for answers was finally over the bodies bore no signs of foul play suggesting that the young women lost control of the car along a gravel road and plunged into the creek below the discovery of their remains nearly 43 years after the tragedy brought long-awaited closure to their family and friends who remembered them as nice outgoing and well-liked number 1. marsha and elizabeth haunch on september 28 1995 new britain connecticut police discovered the remains of a 17 year old female behind a shopping plaza wrapped in bags eight days later they found another female body in western massachusetts about 40 miles from new britain the women's remains were eventually connected through dna in other words they were related somehow with nothing else to go on investigators appealed to the public for information about their identities but got nowhere then in 2014 the families of two missing women marcia and elizabeth honch filed a missing persons report with the new york state police prompting a multi-agency investigation into the matter the bodies discovered in 1995 were identified as belonging to the two women the mother and daughter who had not been seen or heard from since that year detectives immediately set their sights on robert haunch marcia's husband and elizabeth's dad who was living in ohio with a new wife and children the man's handprint matched one found on a plastic bag at the scene of his daughter's death connecting him with the crime scene around the time marsha and elizabeth disappeared robert had told people that they moved to australia and that he planned to tag along as soon as he got a job there but the suspected truth was that he had killed them discarded their remains and moved on with his life meanwhile robert feigned amnesia claiming that he remembered very little of that portion of his life authorities in connecticut and massachusetts arrested robert hodge for the murders of his wife and daughter he is currently doing a life sentence for his crimes thanks for watching would you like to see more videos
