the animal kingdom is a wonderful place from the weird and terrifying creations to the unique and ingenious ways that life has managed to find a way evolution has given us thousands of creatures that are difficult to even comprehend here's ten unique animals you won't believe exist don't forget to smash the like button subscribe to the Supreme and click the notification bell for more litt content let's get rolling number 10 the Borneo earless monitor lizard before we begin we should probably turn your attention to this creature of incredible design just take one look at the Borneo earless monitor lizard and you'd be forgiven for mistaking them for dragons of mythology and legend I'll be it infant sized in fact before it's verified rediscovery back in 2008 this borneo based lizard was first considered by locals to be spawned from the ancient winged dragons of Chinese and Asian myth although the truth is far less mystical the Borneo lizard was initially discovered back in 1877 but has since made a resurgence as one of the most sought-after prized pets for reptile collecting enthusiasts in many circles the Borneo earless monitor lizard is referred to as the holy grail of herpetology tragically because of their rarity the Borneo lizard has also become one of the most illegally trafficked reptiles on the planet and officials have recently been cracking down on the black market trade that has been threatening these incredible creatures hopefully the Borneo earless monitor lizard won't go the way of the Dragon number 9 lowland streaked tenrec all right we know what you're thinking Pokemon right while the lowland streaked tenrec certainly resembles Pikachu in all the right ways the truth behind this incredibly unique creature is a much more fascinating reality resembling a cross between a shrew and a hedgehog the lowland streaked tenrec are endemic to the island nation of madagascar one of the most unique ecosystems on the planet their snouts are long and pointed in their code exhibits a sharp array of spines that Ward's off predators whenever the tenbroek is threatened newborns of this fascinating species are birthed without the spikes yet incredibly begin to grow them just a single day after their birth however the lowland streaked tenrec draws our attention for one reason alone it's the only mammal species on the planet that practices stridulation where an animal rubs together parts of their body to produce a distinct sound this strange act is only ever found in insects and snakes but the tenrec seems to sing its own bizarre song number eight fish scaled gecko reptiles have often found ingenious ways to escape predators in fact some of their species have even perfected the art of severing their own tail on demand in order to survive however this brand-new species of gecko recently discovered in the caves of northern Madagascar takes things to a whole new level this particular species of fish scaled gecko sheds its skin on-demand dropping its scaled exterior in an instant to reveal a thin layer of muscular tissue fish scaled geckos are an incredibly unique species in their own right but this variation dubbed gecko Lepus mega Lepus is the only one of its kind although several of the other gecko species exhibit similar behavior of shedding scales on a whim none of them do it as quickly and as thoroughly as this one plus let's face it it kind of looks like a raw chicken breast after shedding its skin to survive the predator attacking the gecko will then seek a safe and humid place to regenerate its body which usually occurs in just a few weeks now that's fascinating number seven Cantor's giant softshell turtle when you think of turtles you think of turtle shells right sadly for this incredibly bizarre amphibian it seems that they drew the short straw when it came to the turtle power in fact Cantor's giant softshell turtle may be the strangest turtle to have ever lived spotted in several places across Asia and the Indian subcontinent this turtle is one of the least studied species on the planet and given the fact that they are rapidly we may never truly know the extent of their bizarre and unique behavior despite its appearance the species is actually an ambush predator mainly feeding on crustaceans molluscs and fish it spends a staggering 95 percent of its life buried and motionless beneath the sand and shoreline with only its eye and mouth protruding from its tomb named after the famed Danish zoologist Theodore Edward Kant or this giant softshell turtle has been reported to grow up to 1.8 metres in length making it the world's largest freshwater turtle number six echidna sometimes the animal kingdom produces a creature of such strange design that it makes you question how many times evolution got it wrong before getting it right the echidna is exactly that kind of creature named after an ancient Greek goddess who was half woman and half snake the echidna exhibits qualities of both mammals and reptiles one of only two egg-laying mammals on the planet the echidna have no teeth except for when they're born to burrow out of its egg now hold on because it gets even weirder the male echidna has a four-headed reproductive organ that is covered in spines yet both members of the species are born with female reproductive organs also if that's not weird enough you know knuckles from Sonic well he's an echidna they forgot to mention that part number five sea pig unfortunately for the sea pig this strange creature won't be scoring any points on the cute scale unless an alien like tentacled sea cucumber is your kind of thing however that doesn't really matter as very few people on this planet will ever witness a sea pig in their lifetime given the fact that they live at the bottom of the deepest and coldest parts of the ocean found in what is known as the abysmal depths the sea pig can tolerate pressures as deep as four miles beneath the ocean although sea pigs were first described by a Swedish zoologist back in 1882 since then over 65 variations of this bizarre-looking species have been discovered many of which have baffled scientists as to how and why they became so highly specialized on several occasions these sea pigs have been witnessed to congregate in the thousands at the bottom of the sea floor crawling along the sand in a strange array that seemingly has no other purpose not only that but the sea pig is also one of the few creatures on the planet to successfully harbor parasites to a safe degree the sea pig will allow small snails and crustaceans to bore holes into their bodies and feed on them internally for the rest of their life yeah well your guess is as good as ours number four the sneezing monkey you might never have expected a primate to feature on this list given the fact that most of the creatures so far have been incredibly alien in their design but the sneezing monkey certainly questions many of the shared traits often found in our ape-like cousins otherwise known as the Myanmar a snub-nosed monkey this bizarre primate was originally discovered in 2010 in northern Myanmar but has recently became critically endangered and threatened by extinction although incredibly rare their appearance and behavior is rarer still the sneezing monkeys have wide upturned nostrils which bizarrely fill with water when it rains as the locals of northern Myanmar described during the rainy season these snub-nosed monkeys can be heard hiding in the treetops sneezing repeatedly as their nasal passages will fill with water no one knows exactly how or why these creatures evolved in this unique way that they did and sadly unless their conservation status improves we may never know number three do Gong question how do you know that you've made it as a bizarre and unique creature easy when you're so unbelievably strange that you're mistaken for a mermaid of myth and legend the dugong is one of the weirdest marine mammals on the planet and yet many believe that these peaceful and serene creatures were once the inspiration for the ancient seafaring tales of mermaids often found in the warm coastal waters of East Africa and Australia - as far as the Indian and Pacific Oceans these gentle giants are early herbivores primarily grazing on the sea grass is found on the ocean floor incredibly the dugong has a lifespan of up to 70 years and although they have no natural predators historically they've been threatened by human hunting recently the dugong has been granted protected status and their numbers have slowly seen a rise although much more needs to be done in order to ensure that these magical creatures continue to populate our oceans and all of the myriad species on this planet the dugong is only one of two of its kind with its closest relative being the manatee they're living proof of the incredible creatures that can exist on this planet and hopefully continue to do so number two the naked mole-rats you'd be hard-pressed to find a weirder animal than the naked mole rat here's a quick fact for you the naked mole rat is the only mammal in existence to live and breed in an insect-like hive similar to bees and ants here you heard that correctly naked mole rats live in hives with each colony having a single queen alongside one two three breeding males the rest of the colony are simply hormonal 'i suppress non reproducing workers exactly like bees or ants it's the only behavior of its kind ever displayed in a mammal species native to the eastern Horn of Africa this bizarre creature of extraordinary design has continued to baffle scientists with its incredibly unique traits for one they defy the biological law of aging they're essentially resistant to cancer and can survive up to 18 minutes without oxygen they are for all intents and purposes the superheroes of the animal kingdom although they've been studied for decades more and more data seems to emerge about the naked mole rat that offers more questions than answers some scientists believe that they're essentially immortal where others seem as highly resistant and durable to their environment whatever the case the naked mole rat is certainly one of the most unique animals on the planet number one duck-billed platypus and finally we have a creature that is so unique that following its discovery several centuries ago and researchers believed it to be part of an elaborate hoax the duck-billed platypus defied what we knew about evolution at the time and yet the fact that it laid eggs wasn't discovered until about a hundred years later the Platypus shares traits with both reptiles birds and mammals and its appearance is a mash-up of all of them for one the males have venomous Spurs one of the only venomous mammals on the planet that shoot out from its hind legs the female of the species lactate milk for their young yet they have no nipples to do so their distinctive bill is technically a superpower of its own and can sense its environment through electrical currents in the air and water it has webbed feet to swim and a paddle tail like a beaver and scientists are still scratching their heads to discover just exactly how this creature came to be it's certainly among the most unique animals to have ever lived well there we have ten unique animals you won't believe
