hello and welcome to 10 tips for better work orders in this video I have brought up all manner of different ideas to improve your work order list make it more shiny make it more fun and more efficient so before we get started I just want to point out that I'm pretty sure that a couple of these thoughts might or might not be already known to you but I really really hope that by the end of this video there's been a few ideas that were new to you so the very first thing which is not a tip on my list that I want to talk about is this list here if you hold down left shift and use the mouse wheel you can go through entire Pages this is an insanely useful and the game should really showcase this function more so let's get started with a real first tip on the list and that's number one limit your consumptions wherever there is a consumption happening what do I mean with that so when we go for example for a smelting job that does consume fuel so a simple line like here checking if there's enough coal like more than 10 before starting the job make sure that your industries will never drain the last piece of fuel so you don't have to start all over again with charcoal and then Coke refining really powerful and for example here I didn't do it so my smoothies Can will drain the last bit of fuel out of my system you can use that for all many of different things so for example with the clothing make sure that there's a little bit of cloth left and whatever this applies to all many of different Industries gemstones and all these I really emphasize this out of two reasons first off it's a nuisance when you run out of materials and secondly strange mooded dwarves want all manner of different materials to work with and it's always a good idea to have all manner of different materials lying around in a certain amount if you don't put in these limiters into your work orders use strange mood a dwarfs will have much more of a trouble finding the materials they need and other Industries suffer from that as well so bring up number two and that's ways to organize your work order list because this thing is a freaking mess isn't it so I brought up a few ideas that I personally found helpful so first off I really like to Cluster jobs that belong to each other together so for example the Ford the Smithy jobs are here and the clue to your jobs are here but you can't even improve further on that so for example here for Clothiers let's get upstairs where I have my Clothiers select one of them get on over to the work orders and now it's really important that you select some work order that is as impossible to fulfill as a it can be so we're making yawn mittens now here and we are configuring them to only fire off if we ever have 200 or more yeah basically so if this is weird now don't worry it'll make sense in a minute because this work order now has this Clothier sharp tag now on it so we can now go over there and sort it on top of that and this way you have a little bit of attack and this tag can help you to organize your list so basically we have now that clothing is shop tag all the clothing is sharp jobs below there and then we could now start putting a smelt attack below that and sort it again and this way you can keep your work orders somewhat organized without without going insane which goes where because this one is unsorted and I can tell you the longer you play a fortress the more you will be happy about sorting your work your work orders like that so let's come up with number three and that's something I really really like to do so basically whenever you have something special to do you can use these work orders here to do something specifically so for example you need a batch of specific weapons done that's the way to go to configure this ideally make sure that the Smithy doesn't work the workshop in in question doesn't allow any work orders you put up a work order specifically to that workshop and then you let it get done for example here we're crafting a batch of weapons for our squads here I have put up some track Parts on the on the table works also with these whatever the idea behind it is you can do special work orders whenever you need a bigger batch of something which isn't a recurring task it's simple thing it might be pretty obvious but I don't know some people might have not noticed yet that these work job Workshop jobs here are always one-timed one time orders and I really love to use this whenever I need I don't know like you see there a couple of weapons or whatever so number four that's going towards the farmers so you can't automate animal business by putting up animal milking and animal shearing jobs like that so when you go to the pharmacy Workshop you select these sheer animal they look like that in the first place they come only up as a one-time order but if you select the clock thingy they get restarted daily so this way when you have these work orders up you just check daily if there's any cheerable or milkable animals and your people will do their thing I really find that extremely useful especially since this way you get your jobs quite easily automated I'm not sure when this will be included in the standing orders right now I haven't found any standing orders for shearing and milking animals please correct me if I have overlooked something so number five is chain jobs so you might or might not be already aware of the fact that the game also allows you to change jobs together what does that mean so we're going to go for the prime example of that the steel chain job so we go for the smelter so first off you make some pick iron lined again and then we go back to the smelter yet again and make some steel so these jobs are now right next to each other I'm not going to configure it you can get the idea the important thing is we want now that the steel bars get made when the pig iron bars have been made so you get go for that button here and now you select a work order which is going to be the one which is connected to that one so what we did now is that the steel bar order will only be fulfilled after the pick iron bar order has been fulfilled and with a little bit of configuration according to your own needs you can easily say make for Big Iron bars make four times steel and so on and so forth so with these things you can easily get a clean production cycle so you can produce something out of glass and chain up a collect sand job behind that the uses of that system it's up to you I just wanted to show you that you can that you can chain up jobs like that so number six on the list is putting up a meaningful order for your Workshop orders so what does that mean the thing is these things here are being made from top to bottom so that means the job for making bituminous coal is getting above the lemonade or job so basically what I'm trying to say here is if there is ever a order of things important like for example the call refining is a good one that's why I have it on top there this way I'll always try to refine stuff first and then we do something else so you can't use this ordering in many many other ways if you notice that for example you're you're in your Fortress beds are the most important of all Wood Products then put them on the top of the list this way you will make sure that your work orders will be fulfilled accordingly and also if you have more than five work orders for one job here it's also important that you can take that higher and higher because there's one thing if there are for example 10 different work orders and normally fit five five fit in all your ordering will be for not because that will just uh throw things in between as far as I've seen things you need to amp up that number as well and then all the ordering can be really useful to get to make sure that things get done in the order you want to most of the time this is just important for things like smelting business or like that but maybe you and bring up something I haven't thought of so number seven get specific so what do I mean with that so whenever your Fortress is getting designed so this is a Motley Fortress you know I have not done any specifics here all the doors are looking different and whatnot you can though press here the magnifying glass thing and tell the game to use one specific material that might be quite obvious but this is also very very powerful not only for getting yourself doors that all look the same you can also use that for example to say I want to use the lightest weight Stone like jet for example exclusively for rock pots I want to use the very very heavy stones for I don't know things that I want to throw at enemies you get the idea with the magnifying glass command you can specifically tell the game what kind of material should be used and this can be sometimes really really really really useful so you can sometimes specify even what kind of gem with the encrusting should be to if it should be used you can specify what kind of statue should be carved how it should look like all in all these things can be extremely useful when to you when you want to make sure that you get a uniform look or you want to use a specific material for a specific task now then let's get on up to number eight and that's automate everything which is a recurring task so what do I mean with that whenever you notice that you build something more often or you notice that you will build something now and build it later again put a work order up for it don't shy away from having a bajillion different work orders in here it is so useful to automate things because actually your dwarfs aren't really bad at doing all the things you put up their list because it's just easier that way it's so good to just put up a work order and afterwards forget about what uh how these things are being produced and if you keep those little rules in mind like limiting your consumptions and ordering and organizing them together it doesn't really matter if there's 100 1000 or 5 000 different work orders in there as long as they are well organized you can find your way around although I don't think that everybody anybody will bring up 5 000 work orders or do you so with that being said let's get on over to number nine and that's just the amount of repetitions of a job so what I mean with that are these numbers here in front of that so these numbers just in case you didn't know know it yet whenever for example the smell of lemonade or job gets fired off they will try to do it 10 times whenever they make bad job will get fired off they will make it five times and most of my jobs get checked daily you can here make the condition check variable of course but the idea behind that is the lower the number in the repetitions is the slower the production will be the higher the number in the repetition is the higher the faster the production will be this is important and so far as you can for example here when I have this make beds 5 job I will constantly over produce bets a bit because even if I have only five beds for example it will still produce five and will over exceed the the jobs maximum amount by far but sometimes you just don't care and it doesn't matter if I have six beds eight beds 11 beds usually you use them up so the gist of it is whenever you need items really in large amounts don't shy away from higher amounts of repetitions and if it's something you really need sparingly or lower amounts keep the amount of repetitions rather low so this way you can control a little bit how large your production amounts are and it's also important to note that if you don't limit your repetitions accordingly especially in the early stages of the game this can bind your workers unnecessarily they will keep stuck with jobs that you don't want them to do because they they have to do these 10 repetitions first before because they before they will do anything else sometimes they get stuck in those Loops so the idea behind that is check out how often do you need these items and put up repetitions accordingly I personally use nothing exceeding 10. I don't know how you guys are handling it I just found that extremely powerful tool to navigate through your consumptions and number 10 is a very very nasty one that I recently stumbled over and for example I have here a certain some jobs where I could say like start building something if I have like more than 10 iron bars and whatnot so the problem here is that everything you build with be it bars or blocks so here I have 250 iron bars in my position if I click one of these though it turns out that they are in the walls the game is not capable of showing you which of these bars and blocks are currently part of a building and which of them are currently available so why is that important you might ask yourself so if you use limit is like here amount of iron bars available is greater than 10 for example we will always have more than 10 because we have already built with 150 blocks or so so keep that in mind that when you're using these limiters it's unless you use the material as a building material things go Bonkers so you can you you should just be aware of that fact because it can really destroy your management and in that regard whatever you build will be still part of your possessions and will be still handled by the workshops as if it would be on a stockpile even though it's uh just not I hope this gets ruled out at some point but as it is now it is now so I hope you found these things helpful feel free to leave me your own tips and tricks Below in the comment section because I'm well aware of the fact that these were only my personal top 10 and I think there's just way more that you can do with the work order organization and I'd love to hear your own tips and tricks so everybody browsing through this video will have a lot of stuff to improve his fortress on that would be my personal favorite here so if you enjoyed the video please feel free to leave me a thumbs up on it and also consider subscribing I do daily content like this and I'd be really really happy to have you here also there is a playlist link down there leading to tutorials for Dwarf Fortress editorials series all these things and at this point again a big shout out and thanks to the supporters of this channel you guys are making a lot of things happen and I'm so grateful for all the crazy things that have happened in the last couple of months thanks for that if you want to see how to support this channel there's three links down there to patreon buy me a coffee and PayPal and I'd be delighted if you give them a look if not I just want to let you know that I really really appreciate you still hanging around bearing through the ad roll and still being here that's really awesome that means a lot to me so have a nice day and I hope to see hear whatever you soon bye bye
