[Music] Kujo the story of one pissed-off daughter who thinks a contracting rabies turns into one fierce and furious hell beast based on a novel by Stephen King which was published in 1981 and then released as a movie in 1983 Cujo tells the story of a mother's fight and struggled to stay alive and protect her son when a young mom Donna Trenton played by et's mum and her son tad are trapped in a car in the blistering heat when they visit a car repair workshop only to get greeted by Cujo drooling snarling dog beast with a taste of human blood despite the fact that st. burners are well known for their fun friendly loving temperaments Cujo proves that this otherwise good-natured dog can indeed be terrifying nightmare fuel and can also be just as deadly as any other popular horror boogeyman time to keep the rabies shots nearby as we explore ten things that you may not know about Cujo the classic Stephen King story where man's best friend turns into man's most terrifying fear let's check this beast out you [Music] number ten cujo's unlikely stunt doubles indeed seen Cujo on screen was pretty terrifying and considering that one Cujo was terrifying enough the fort of an army of cujo's is unimaginable well behind the scenes that was the case as the role of Cujo was actually played by 13 different doggies to perform different routines for the camera but oddly and I do mean oddly in addition to that Cujo was also played by men in doggo costumes yes actual men wearing Cujo dog suits that's just weird number 9 the movie wasn't as hot as it looked indeed Cujo sure does look like one hot and sweaty movie just watching the movie makes me feel the heat and humidity that this poor mother and a little boy had to endure but here's the thing Cujo was actually shot in north California between October to December so the shooting conditions were actually surprisingly freezing in fact it got so cold both Dee Wallace and Danny Ventura really struggled with filming their scenes often the car heater would have to be switched on to keep them both warmer all I can say is both those two actors and makeup artists as set designs need an Academy Award because I never would have guessed that Cujo was filmed during the winter I swear I just look at this movie and it just feels burning hot so well done to everyone involved number 8 Cujo was a little too happy [Music] many of the real dogs who played Cujo would actually have to have their tails tied down because they were just so happy to be on the set and because by nature st. Bernard's are a very friendly fun-loving breed to them the whole experience was one big game and thus their tails would constantly be wagging which was taking the tension away from the scenes thankfully the dog owes playful tales were controlled and not shown to be wagging on the film otherwise this truly menacing movie beast wouldn't have looked so threatening especially if the audience was thinking in the back of their minds oh it's okay this dog is just playing and wants to have fun look he's wagging his tail yeah that probably wouldn't have been as creepy and definitely not the effect that the film crew were going for number seven Cujo could have been a Doberman although Cujo was a Saint Bernard in the book of which the film crew were determined to stick to the movies dog trainer lobbied for Cujo to be a different breed of dog as he felt that Saint Bernards were too difficult to work with let alone be trained and suggested another breeder mainly a Doberman hey it could have been worse at least it wasn't a chihuahua I mean don't get me wrong Dobermans can look threatening enough sometimes but don't quite have the mass and size and I think that the fact that Cujo is a Saint Bernard which has a robust size which is also well known for being a fun-loving dog just makes the story of Cujo that bit more shocking and tragic number 6 Cujo would appear in more movies [Music] yes although Cujo made his cinematic debut in the 1983 film it wouldn't be the famous rabies infected dog OHS only on-screen role as two years later in 1985 Cujo would return to have a cameo in the Stephen King anthology movie cat's eye in which at the start of the movie Cujo chases the main character who is a cat and in the process nearly has an encounter with the car Christine another Stephen King creation proving just how dangerous the Stephen King universe really is and even more recently in the 2017 Dark Tower movie adaptation many fans have noticed the st. Bernard in the movie and considering that the movie as many Stephen King Easter eggs there has been great speculation that this is in fact Cujo so there you have it just like Pennywise Cujo lives number 5 Cujo was defeated by a crappy 3d shot although Cujo performed quite well at the box office earning over 21 million dollars out of an 8 million dollar budget it was however the third highest-grossing horror movie of 1983 behind jaws 3d and psycho 2 yet not only could Cujo not overcome rabies but it seems he couldn't overcome movie sequels either now okay I get psycho too after all it was a long time awaited sequel to a movie which took 23 years to come out but come on jaws 3d and you're telling me that this crappy cardboard cutout of jaws was better and more terrifying than Cujo I'm going to find everyone who chose to see jaws 3d instead of Cujo back in 1983 and give them detention number for the movie changes the fate of tad movies and books are obviously two completely different mediums and what works in one doesn't necessarily work in the other so often when a book gets adapted into a movie so and changes must be made in the case of Cujo it was the fate of poor tad the little boy who's trapped in the car with his desperate mother when the movie ends we learned that tad is alive and everything is hunky-dory however the books ending is by far way more shocking as tad dies due to his dehydration making the novel totally end on a down note rightly so this was changed for the movie as the death of a little boy probably just wouldn't have worked on screen it's like hey guys the kid is dead now don't forget to get more popcorn in the lobby on your way out and let's be honest it probably wouldn't have had much of a rewatch value because who's gonna go back and see the scary adventure again and knowing that the kid [ __ ] it number three the movies poster doesn't really resemble a killer dog movie [Music] imagine it's 1983 and you come across this movie poster for an upcoming movie called Cujo now if you've never heard of Cujo before are you for one second going to think that this is a movie about a deadly st. Bernard this looks more like a poster for Texas Chainsaw Massacre I mentioned before that the movie was the third highest-grossing horror movie of 1983 but maybe it might have done better if the poster actually depicted the movie then there is this one which has a close-up of Dee Wallace's face along with some broken glass and what looks like a werewolf seriously look at that I know a st. Bernard when I see one and that ain't no Saint Bernard this looks more like a sequel to howling interestingly enough the best poster that depicts the movie is this one that was used outside America where we actually see that Cujo is a Saint Bernard where we can see he terrorizes a mother and her child in a car Sarah say they should have just gone with that poster number two the movie removes an evil spirit [Music] although the movie just blatantly explains that Cujo has rabies after we see him getting bitten by a bat the novel actually offers an alternative explanation for Cujo sudden bloodlust and epic drooling as it suggests that Cujo may in fact be possessed by the evil spirit of a serial killer but the movie's director Lewis Teague opted to remove the serial killer possession subplot and just stick to rabies the irony being the same thing happened a few years earlier with the Christine movie adaptation where it was decided that Christine wouldn't be haunted by an evil spirit but instead the car itself was evil there was however going to be the added subplot of tad having a supernatural entity living in his closet another subplot that was seen in the book and special effects tests were even made but the idea was eventually scrapped - also poltergeist had just come out a few years earlier so the whole evil closet thing had already been done number one the inspiration for writing the novel Stephen King would often base his stories on real-life events that happen to him odd and unique things that trigger the spark in his head which leads him to write his sensational stories the roots of Cujo go back to 1977 when Kings motorcycle broke down so he took it to a mechanic in Maine where else who had the biggest st. Bernard he had ever seen which we can only imagine probably made King feel intimidated so from here the seed was planted and Kings had to write Cujo but King actually doesn't remember writing the novel because cocaine is one hell of a drug and I'm not kidding IVA due to his addiction issues back then King has no recollection of writing the novel ok people's that was my blood-curdling look into Cujo the ultimate movie of dog terror and bloodlust with plenty of doggy drool to boot I hope you all enjoyed it and are eager to see what my next episode will be anyway stay fresh and cool I'm minty and I'm off to Pat a dog preferably one without rabies yeah [Music] [Music]
