[Music] fairbanks alaska is located in the middle of the state and is the largest city in the interior region of alaska it's a popular jumping-off point for visiting the arctic circle denali national park and is home to the university of alaska fairbanks many people visit in the winter when you can see the northern lights but my dad and i visited in the summer and spent a few days exploring the city here are some of my favorite spots in and around fairbanks and let me know what i left off in the comments first up the most popular attraction in the city is probably museum of the north housed on the university of alaska campus this is easily the best museum i saw in my entire time in alaska the museum has stunning architecture and a great view over the city before you even walk in then when you start exploring you'll get a deep dive into the state's history with exhibits focusing on all of the different regions the exhibits here are really well laid out and do a great job introducing you to alaska's history don't miss this spot while you're in fairbanks my next recommendation is fountainhead antique auto museum i'm not a huge car buff myself but this museum was amazing the website says that it has been voted one of the best auto museums in the world and i would not debate that claim the museum focuses on pre-world war ii automobiles and they have over 95 of them with some dating back to the late 1800s i was even told that almost every car in the museum runs as well which is amazing on its own plus they have the first car to ever come to alaska which was made right in the state reading the story about that car and seeing the car was worth the visit just by itself next up head over to pioneer park which is a 44 acre city park right in the heart of fairbanks the park has all sorts of things to see ranging from a small gold rush town to the ss ninana the estes nina was a stern wheeler that floated passengers along the yukon river be sure to stop by the pioneer museum if you're a fan of pioneer history as well or visit the air museum in the park pioneer park is a great spot for the whole family to explore [Music] my next recommendation is the trans-alaska pipeline viewpoint moving outside the city a little bit this quick stop at the trans-alaska pipeline viewpoint is a great place to see the pipeline that transverses the state of alaska over 800 miles this pipeline carries oil across the state and is an engineering marvel the viewpoint gives you a view of the pipeline and provides a lot of information on how it was built how it stays clean and what it is that it does next up i recommend gold daughters which is right across the street from the pipeline and where you can pan for gold panning for gold is an important part of the state's history so we didn't want to leave without doing it gold daughters is a great spot to learn how to pan for gold and to leave with a few flakes yourself how it works is you pick a price and they give you a bag with some guaranteed gold in it to understand how to gold pan though there's dirt in the back from some of their gold claims and you can go through shovels full of that before trying your own bag my dad and i sat here for a good hour just trying out our gold panning luck and we left with a few flakes which was a fun souvenir from the trip my next recommendation is running reindeer ranch another really popular spot in fairbanks is running reindeer ranch this private residence has been giving tours that allow you to walk and interact with their reindeer for years on the tour you get to learn all about reindeer meet and interact with the ones that they have and then walk around the property and see them interact with each other and eat the different foliage it's a really fun experience with great people especially if you want to get up close with a reindeer while in fairbanks these last three recommendations head outside the fairbanks area and are good day trips if you're staying in the city first up is the north pole fairbanks is close to the city of north pole alaska which fully embraces the fun santa spirit that comes with having that name the town has a gift shop that's known as santa's home which you can visit and which supposedly has the largest santa in the world outside you can explore the shop take pictures with santa see the reindeer that are outside and just get in the holiday cheer year round plus the town itself has candy canes all over which are fun to see as well my next recommendation is the chenna hot springs and ice museum if you have a full day or you want to spend the night somewhere unique head out to channa hot springs here you can soak in their huge natural hot springs pool or visit the year-round ice museum in the ice museum you can see their ice sculptures and have a drink in an ice glass at the bar once you finish your drink you can smash your glass outside which is a fun way to end your time visiting the museum my dad and i went during the midnight sun time of year and it was awesome to soak in the hot springs in the daylight at like 11 pm at night after visiting the ice museum before ending this video here are two food spots that i liked in fairbanks first up is the cookie jar cookie jar is a well-known diner in the city that has been featured on the food network and cooks up some great breakfast food it's always busy and when you walk in you'll see the massive cinnamon rolls and know why my dad and i both enjoyed our breakfast at this spot and it's a great place to start your day in fairbanks lastly is the alaskan salmon bake the alaskan salmon bake is basically an institution in fairbanks it's located right in pioneer park and it's a great family friendly adventure in the city here you can eat some great salmon halibut and even prime rib while enjoying the park and the community that always comes out to it it's a great summertime tradition and i recommend bringing your appetite and splitting the mother lode with someone which comes with a little bit of everything letting you try it all so there you have it some of my favorite spots in fairbanks alaska in the summer let me know what i left off in the comments and we'll see you on the next video
