what's going on island hoppers today we are coming to you from fairbanks alaska let's do it [Music] travel is the only thing that makes you richer all right we are headed up into the interior of alaska to the second biggest city in all of the state this area is known as a military outpost as well as a gateway into the rest of the interior in this fairbanks travel guide we're going to show you around the downtown area go out to some of the natural preservation places around the town also head out to a glacier as well as north pole alaska which is right down the road so fairbanks is known as the golden heart city but if you look right here you could see that fairbanks is right here in the interior how far away we are from the other areas you have anchorage 358 miles away you have the arctic circle 194 miles away from here that's going north so fairbanks totally in the interior of alaska right here here we are on 2nd avenue right outside the mecca bar there are a couple bars along this road but we're going to show you guys around some other areas as we walk around downtown fairbanks here i'll tell you a little bit more about the settlement of fairbanks so the original people here are athabascan peoples who have been here in the area or the region for thousands of years now the first european settlers were captain e.t barnet who founded fairbanks back in 1901 in tanacross which was actually set up as a trading post [Music] this is your first time to islandhopper tv please consider liking the video and subscribing to the channel as well as turning on the bell to get notified every time we make a new video [Music] fairbanks sits along the banks or the shores of the chennai river as you can see in 1967 this here river flooded this area of fairbanks the city proper fairbanks has around 31 000 people and if you include fairbanks north star borough just under 100 000 people at ninety seven thousand okay it's also home to the university of alaska fairbanks just south of fairbanks is the tanana river which actually connects to the yukon river one of the biggest river systems in all of north america another interesting fact is that the alaska highway was built in 1942 and it took eight months to build it that's quick may know of that highway as the dalton highway also famously known for the ice road truckers here we are at the lacey street theater but now it's actually called the ice museum we're gonna go in here and see what they got in ice museum yeah so here we are at the ice bar in the ice museum boy is it cold in here let me tell you [Music] [Music] [Music] look at this you can even sit in a sled a reindeer sleds [Music] so as you can see in that ice museum they do tell you about the ice sculptures but at night they do the northern lights if you're anything like me and you show up to fairbanks in the summertime you're gonna get the midnight sun you're not gonna get the actual northern lights the aurora borealis that's a winter thing that happens here in fairbanks so guess what i'm gonna have to come back here in the winter and show you guys northern [Music] lights [Music] here we are at creamer's field if you look right behind me you could see there's birds those water fowls this is an animal wildlife refuge right here so creamers field right next to the creamery the creamery fields in the walking area around here are the hikes the trails might see some wildlife when you're out here but you'll definitely see some mosquitoes so do bring some bug spray for that [Music] so when you guys come over to creamer field you guys go back into the boreal forest or the farm trail you'll notice there's some beautiful trails back here let's go explore some [Music] more [Music] so all right now we've made it to pioneer park we're going to go inside here and see what they have to offer [Music] if you look right behind me you can see an old riverboat and right over here is an old denali train [Music] these houses you see here are old pioneer houses that used to be right there on downtown fairbanks you look right behind me here this is one from 1904 and it used to be right there on first avenue noble street pioneer park really gives you insight into the original settlement days dating back to the early 1900s when people were coming up here from the states as they like to call them or the lower 48 since after all alaska is the 49th state but what they've done is they took the structures that were down in downtown fairbanks and they moved them over here to pioneer park and that's what you're looking at is all these old structures that have just been reconstructed over here in this really cool area where they do festivals and music all that stuff lots of good food too if you like salmon do [Music] do [Music] so alaska is actually the 49th state it's known as the last frontier the capital is juno which is on the inner passage which is southern part of the alaskan peninsula headed south towards the yukon of canada now the largest city is anchorage right now i'm standing in fairbanks and this is where people come to see the northern lights now i can't see them right now because i'm here in the summertime which is why they call this the land of the midnight moon or the midnight sun because actually the sun comes out uh all day in the summertime and then in the winter time it's mostly darkness and that's why it's pretty convenient to come up here to alaska to see the northern lights the aurora [Music] borealis [Music] do [Music] believe it or not we're actually at the salmon bake at pioneer park look at these teeth on these salmon [Music] so [Music] do [Music] and what we're going to do now is go about 20 minutes down the road to a town called north pole after this we're going to go check out the glacier which i know you guys have been looking forward to all right here we are today at north pole which is a town next to fairbanks this is santa claus village let's go take a look [Music] [Music] [Music] we got some candy canes from the north pole cotton candy and cherry i'll let you know how those taste but they do have reindeer as you can see although they're kind of just relaxing [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] yeah so here at the naughty shop we got some elk jerky [Music] all right so what we're going to do now is we're going to head over to the castner glacier as you can see we're sitting along the banks of what i think is called the chennai river but could be the yukon river i just don't know the name of it because we don't have any cell phone signal out here look at this beautiful [Applause] view [Music] yeah when you come up to alaska you'll notice those plugs in the front of everyone's hood why do you think that is well because it gets 30 40 below out here so you got to defrost somehow i thought you guys were gonna ask me about how good the uh candy cane tastes well this one's cotton candy it tastes okay and as we're driving here you can see the alaskan pipeline this goes all the way from the interior to valdez oh and the name of the river is actually the tanana river so it's not the chenna river tanana [Music] river you look right behind me just off the freeway here the highway you can see a moose [Music] now once you get this far out there the only thing you're going to come across from delta junction on is an army fort called fort greeley from here you're in the wild blue yonder this is nothing but wilderness and let me tell you it is some beautiful wilderness at that i thought you guys were never gonna ask how does the elk jerky taste well let's open it up and find out oh elk jerky i really like elk because it's uh free range you know out there on the uh now that is some damn good jerky i ain't just saying that we've arrived at castner glacier we're going to go up there and see what it looks like [Music] [Music] all right we've made it to the glacier tunnel if you look down there you can see people walking underneath the actual ice [Music] [Music] [Music] as you can see there's actual ice out here from the glacier it's like a rock [Music] long hike let me tell you nothing better than some elk jerky [Music] [Music] [Music] all right everyone thanks for watching this episode island hopper tv from fairbanks alaska hope you guys enjoyed this one if you did please watch some of our other videos from across alaska and the lower 48. see you on the next [Music] one
