hi it's Katrina from human body parts to illegal substances here are ten strange things found inside statues number ten letters inside Jesus in late 2017 workers at a restoration company da Vinci restored oh we're working on a wooden sculpture of Jesus when they came across something quite unexpected in a very unlikely place as preservationist were working on his loincloth they discovered a panel in the buttocks of the 18th century statue the statue portrayed the image of Jesus Christ during the crucifixion and had been hanging in the Church of st. Agatha in northern Spain as they opened it they found a makeshift time capsule of sorts inside there were handwritten pieces of paper that turned out to be a message from the chaplain of the Cathedral plucking Mingus who wrote the notes and must have placed them in their surprising location in 1777 while it is common for sculptures from that time to be hollow it is very rare to find something inside the 240 year old letters depict day-to-day life in eighteenth-century Spain for both cultural and economic perspectives the letters credit a man named Manuel vile with creating the statue along with other statues that were placed in churches throughout the region Minges also names the king at the time Charles the 3rd and discusses local wine and crops like rye wheat oats and barley as well as what illnesses are affecting people at the time mainly malaria and typhoid fever the fun part is that he adds that people are playing cards and ball games for entertainment at the time the national court was in Madrid and the Spanish Inquisition which lasted from 1478 to 1834 was ongoing historian Aaron Arroyo told el mundo that since he covers so many topics Mingus his letters were likely meant as a time capsule for future generations he says that it is so rare for artifacts to be discovered hidden inside of religious statues that it is one of the most surprising discoveries the restoration group has ever made the historians made copies and place them back into the buttocks to honor Minges legacy number 9 lion time capsule in late 2014 sculptor Robert Shore discovered a time capsule inside the head of a lion statue that sat outside the old Statehouse in Boston Massachusetts for over a century sure had been tasked with restoring the statue along with the unicorn sculpture when he made the incredible find rumors immediately began swirling about the time capsules contents as soon as the news was made public although a long-forgotten Boston Globe story from 1901 had actually covered the topic staff from the Bostonian society didn't even know about the news story or the capsule until shortly before the capsule was discovered when one of the original sculptors descendants found a letter about it along with a list of his contents only then did they look into the matter and find the then one hundred and thirteen year-old globe article according to the story the capsule contained photographs autographs old newspaper clippings and sealed letters from prominent politicians and Bostonians of the era using a fiber-optic camera sure detected the copper shoebox-sized capsule which was fastened to the sculpture with copper straps the items inside matched the description in the globe article and were in surprisingly good condition for their age according to the members of the Bostonian society who opened it disappointingly they didn't go through the items right then and there but at least the news story gave them and the rest of the world an idea what to expect number eight statue within a statue this find dates back to 1955 when workers in Bangkok Thailand dropped a clay Buddha statue that they were moving woops it broke and it turns out that there was another statue of Buddha made of solid gold inside the seemingly ordinary statue sat outside a Buddhist monastery for around 25 years until the Bangkok government decided to start modernizing the city plans were made for a road to be built over the monastery which now sat abandoned and workers came to relocate the long-forgotten statue they attached ropes to it with plans to move it using a crane that they believed could handle its weight but when the crane lifted the statue from his pedestal it fell and chipped the lead monk was concerned about further damage so the crew covered the statue with some tarps with plans to return for it the next day it rained during the night widening the crack and revealing a hint of gold that's why it was so heavy the next day workers shipped the rest of the plaster away discovering a treasure that for decades had been regarded as little more than a simple decoration underneath its inconspicuous exterior the statue turned out to be a nine foot tall 18 karat gold rendition of Buddha there was also a key that could be used to disassemble this statue into nine pieces and to put it back together making it much easier to transport today the statue sits in the wat tramit temple in Bangkok where it serves as the main attraction number seven drugs it's not unheard of for drug smugglers to hide their goods inside of statues but it's pretty unusual for traffickers to move their product by disguising it as a statue someone have gotten creative in Laredo Texas in 2008 federal agents seized a painted statue of Jesus made from paste with as much as six pounds of cocaine mixed in Smuggler's hope that border agents would simply dismiss the statue as exactly that without noticing the 30-thousand dollars of illicit white powder it was sculpted out of unfortunately for them drug sniffing dogs easily detected the offensive substance this seizure shows what extreme measures people will go through to smuggle drugs so Janice jana of the immigration and custom enforcement Lorado office two years earlier someone tried a similar smuggling strategy in bogota colombia where they tried shipping a World Cup replica made from cocaine to Spain the faux statue contains 24 pounds of the drug mixed with either acetone or gasoline it almost made it through - and now for number six but first big thank you to potato Fenix I think this is one of the best compliments ever and a big welcome to curious mr. G who is a new subscriber you guys make my day if you are new here be sure to subscribe and join the origins explained family number six confederate time-capsule while moving a Confederate statue named Johnny Reb in downtown Orlando's Lake Eola park in 2017 amid conflicting opinions and public controversy over its alleged overtones of racism workers discovered a suspected time capsule inside its base after removing the rusty tin box from the 800-pound statue city officials stored it for three weeks before opening it and learning of its contents in the meantime rumors spread as to what could be inside greenwood Sexton Don Price imagine that the box would be full of dust since insects had burrowed their way in over the years Patricia Schnur a member of the anti Coleman chapter of the Daughters of the Confederacy which commissioned the statue speculated that the box contained a confederate battle flag Confederate currency and a framed picture of general robert e lee while those weren't the exact items found in the box any suspicions of it being a time capsule proved correct when they opened it city officials discovered cocktail size confederate flags written records of minutes from a United Daughters of the Confederacy meeting in Ocala and a 1911 newspaper containing an article about a Neola Florida man drowning himself due to poor health the artifacts were in remarkably good condition especially for being over a century old and considering the box was found among ants and roaches as workers disassembled the statue Johnny Reb was relocated to the Confederate veteran section of Orlando's Greenwood Cemetery which contains plots dedicated to fallen soldiers and veterans from both sides of the Civil War number five a mummified Buddhist monk a statue of a sitting Buddha made its way from China to the Netherlands where it was purchased by a private buyer the buyer took it to get restored and it turns out that the statue came with a surprise the 1,000 year old Buddhist statue had a mummified monk inside in September 2014 a team of scientists performed a full-body CT scan took a bone sample for DNA testing and extracted samples from the Mummy's chest and abdomen the team discovered that the monks organs had been removed and replaced with cloth and paper depicting Chinese characters and other material which they have yet to identify they're also unsure what methods were used for removing the organs from the body researchers believe the body is that of Lea Quan a buddhist master who died around 1100 how he ended up inside the statue which was kept in a Chinese temple until a private collector acquired it and discovered the mummy is somewhat of a mystery one possibility is that Leo Kwan practice self mummification a process by which monks transition into living buddhas achieving this revered status took years and required a specialized diet of gradual starvation with the monk eating diminishing quantities of things like nuts berries pine needles and tree bark while spending virtually all of their time meditating as they slowly approached death they also ate poisonous seeds which kept insects away and acted as embalming agents when the monk finally passed away most of their body fat and moisture was gone causing their remains to decay much more slowly than normal after Leo Kwan died his body was displayed in a temple for two centuries and was encased in the statue when decay began taking its toll number for money if you ask practically anyone what they'd love to find unexpectedly money would probably be a popular answer some Australian experts were among the lucky few who could say this happened to them when in 2016 they discovered an ancient fake note inside a six hundred and forty-five year old wooden Chinese religious statue that they were preparing for auction the currency was issued in 1371 during the reign of the Ming dynasty's first emperor and is one of the earliest known examples of paper money during that time most of Europe still primarily used coinage and only began using banknotes about three centuries later the cash is roughly the size of a standard letter making it much bigger than most modern currency and was valued at one guan where the equivalent of one ounce of silver or 1000 copper coins at the time it also bears a message advising people to report any known counterfeiting which was punishable by decapitation like the statue it was found inside the banknote was auctioned off number three hundreds of love letters in Verona Italy in 2014 shortly before Valentine's Day hundreds of love letters and keys were found inside a bronze statue of Juliet from Shakespeare's most famous tragedy the statue which was created by sculptor Nerio Constantine II shortly before his death in 1969 had been taken down from its location in the courtyard of Juliet's house in her hometown for a restoration in preparation for Valentine's Day as the elements and visitors had taken a toll over the years causing it to crack and sustain other wear and tear it was mostly weathered from human touch courtesy of a tradition among tourists to rub the statues arms and breasts for good luck the love letters ended up in the sculpture after its cracks became big enough for visitors to slip note through people also put keys inside the statue to a tradition of lovers writing their names on small padlocks before getting rid of the keys when preservationist tried sealing the statues cracks and creating a replica to replace the original width they discovered the hundreds of mementos left behind by lovestruck tourists they ultimately casted a copy of the statue and put the copy in the square and they put the original in doors the fate of the letters and keys inside the original statue is unknown maybe the preservationist were kind enough to leave them inside before sealing its cracks number 2 human teeth in 2014 in the small Mexican parish of San Bartolo kuelap on a restoration team working on a painted wooden statue of Jesus discovered something unexpected popular guy right but not in the same way as the other one this statue is equipped with real human teeth the 18th century statue called the christ of patience contains eight teeth from an unknown adult as spooky as this may seem in the modern world it was once a fairly common practice a tradition even for people to donate unneeded body parts for religious purposes according to restorer Fanny unique else and own genie who discovered the statues teeth preservationist are admittedly unsure exactly how the 300 year old statue ended up with human teeth but Centon Cheney said they were likely donated as a token of gratitude we have to remember that these people were very very religious she told LiveScience they believed absolutely that there was a life after death and this was important for them still the discovery is an odd one while parishioners and other parts of Mexico have been known to donate hair clothing and money to their churches the teeth for religious statues were usually made of animal bones and horns it's the first time teeth have been found in a sculpture sent on [ __ ] admited adding that the statue and its teeth are an excellent condition for their age number one artifacts in early 2018 Japanese officials reported the discovery of nearly 200 artifacts inside a religious statue standing etches 30 inches tall the relatively small Buddhist figurine represents a depiction of Manju bosatsu a bodhisattva or a person who is on the path to achieving Buddhahood or who is capable of reaching nirvana but chooses not to for the sake of helping humanity on earth more specifically Manju bosatsu represents wisdom thought to be around 700 years old the statue sat on display at ho chi Chi temple an eighth century temple in the ancient Japanese capital of Nara in nara prefecture that was built at a time when buddhism was a rapidly gaining popularity experts believe the 180 items inside sat undisturbed since the time they were put in there until when they were rediscovered scientists confirmed their suspicions that something unusual was hiding inside the statue by performing a CT scan on it that's a fun job they found around 150 items mostly Scrolls crammed into the statues body and around 30 other objects in its head exactly what the scrolls say what the other items are and why they were long-forgotten remains a mystery at the time researchers had no immediate plans to open the statue and examine its contents by hand although it's unknown whether they may do this in the future the statue which remains sealed for now is just one of many rare artifacts that are housed within the Ho Chi Chi temple thanks for watching which one was your favorite would you like to learn more about strange discoveries let me know in the comments below and remember to subscribe if you haven't already see you later bye
