cruising along the Norwegian Sea the storm was so violent it caused the ship's engines to fail from there huge waves and high winds forced the ship to drift towards land and she became precariously close to grounding in fact she was only within 100 feet of grounding before crew restarted her engine the waves caused by the storm were an estimated 26 feet high passengers aboard the Viking sky described furniture sliding and window panes breaking the crew had begun with a total of 1373 passengers but more than 400 passengers were airlifted via helicopter rescue efforts during the storm however 900 terrified passengers were left aboard the Viking sky as she rolled along with the angry waves of the temperamental Norwegian sea number 9 the princess Hawaii the princess Hawaii is a fishing vessel so she is built to withstand moderate waves but the two rogue waves that she crashed into on March 25th 2018 or anything but moderate the princess Hawaii was about 400 miles north off the Big Island of Hawaii with the wave struck the sheer force of the rogue waves were too much for the 61 foot fishing vessel the waves knocked five of the eight people off the ship and into the sea the remaining people were forced to abandon ship as the rogue waves took the ship down luckily the captain was able to deploy the ship's life raft and everyone was able to climb aboard it the people aboard the princess Hawaii said that they had never experienced waves of that magnitude or waves that had come on so quickly they watched in shock as the princess Hawaii sank into the another nearby ship was called via radio and came to the rescue the eight people on the life raft were unharmed but rightfully rattled number eight USS Memphis on August 29th 1916 the USS Memphis a United States Navy armored Cruiser met three massive waves while in the Santo Domingo Harbor in the Dominican Republic each of these waves was over 70 feet high and the waves crashed down over the unsuspecting ship pummeling her decks the waves were caused by freak winds and a passing hurricane there was literally no warning before the waves surged and swelled it was a devastating encounter 40 people lost their fiercer than their surrounding waves the ship was hit by two of these waves consecutively the waves devastated the ship her forward main gut turret was flooded as water rose higher than her four top the waves smashed her for bridge and damaged countless other features five people died as a result of these huge waves and 17 other people were severely injured making the HMS Alba Mars encounter with the rogue waves one of the worst encounters in history number five the discovery On February 8th 2000 the British oceanographic research ship the discovery found herself in the middle of a perilous storm in fact the storm and the waves she encountered were not just perilous they were historical the storm struck with little warning and given where she was in the water there was little she could do the discovery was about 250 kilometres west of Scotland in the North Atlantic when the storm struck the ship had nowhere to go and was forced to sit through the storm and wait it out passengers throughout the ship it took the crew of the MS prince and dom days to clean up the debris [Music] number three the anthem of the Seas the anthem of the Seas is a luxury cruise ship run by Royal Caribbean and like most cruise ships she's built to withstand fierce storms into massive waves but in 2017 she had a close call with a massive wave there were four thousand five hundred guests aboard and 1,600 crew members when the wave came crashing down the anthem of the Seas was enroute to a port in Florida but because of the severity of the storm she was rerouted and sent back to New Jersey passengers held their breath as enormous waves came crashing down and with wind speeds of 120 miles an hour passengers were instructed to remain inside the safety of the ship's walls indefinitely four people were injured and numerous public rooms were damaged before the anthem of the Seas was able to find calmer waters number two the HMNZS otago the HMNZS Oh taco is a tough warship at 270 feet long she can travel at 25 miles per hour and displace up to 1,900 tons of water the ship is owned by the New Zealand Navy and has extensive experience navigating rough waters she is no stranger to storms however she met her match when she encountered a crazy storm in the southern sea and even this fierce warship had a difficult time against the massive waves brought on by the storm the Southern Ocean is known for its gale force winds and waves but this storm was particularly violent and the storm brought enormous waves with it the waves which were an estimated 65 feet high crashed over the front of the ship in fact the entire bow of the HMNZS otago was completely submerged underwater at times before she was able to resurface she battled hard though and beat the way she victoriously cruised her way through the storm number one the MS Queen Elizabeth - on September 11th 1995 cue nard lines the MS Queen Elizabeth - was travelling on course from Southampton to New York and she was forced to change course hurricane Lewis was ravishing the Atlantic Ocean and to avoid the hurricane she was rerouted but the swells winds and waves caused by the hurricane were unavoidable the winds howled at 130 miles an hour rattling the windows the MS Queen Elizabeth 2 hit several smaller waves of around 40 feet before the big one came the Colossus 95 foot wave smashed into the MS Queen Elizabeth 2 severely damaging her in places passengers gasped as the unbelievable wave crashed down and the ship swayed precariously fortunately although the ship was damaged no one was injured and the Queen Elizabeth was able to weather the storm and arrive safely ashore however the massive 95 foot wave she took on is one of the largest waves on this list which is why the MS Queen Elizabeth 2 has won the
