on the build show today another episode of what's new in building products and tools i got fire i got plumbing i got tools i got electrical we got some good stuff to talk about today let's get going all right guys you know that i've been building my own house and as a result i have been an absolute nerd about researching plumbing now i didn't end up using this on my house i actually found it a little too late but this is a really interesting new product that's an in-wall shut off that's a little sleeker than most out there this is the aqua flow by lsp and this is their pull stop valve box now this is going to go into the rough end stage it's got this white collar on it which is meant for the sheetrock guy to prevent damage from the inside of the box but after sheetrock when the plumber comes you're going to unscrew this pop this off and then this is the guts right here this is a quarter turn ball valve they're going to make this in pex connections or they also have one in copper here as well but here's what's going to happen when the plumber gets this all set he's going to pop your supply line through here and then this box is going to go on let's see if i can do it correctly on camera and this is the trim right here and this trim ring can be all kinds of different flavors they've got uh i don't know black ones silver ones chrome ones whatever bronze style you want but here's the deal it's a pull stop box so that is on right now so i push that in that's the on way right now and if we had a problem we need to stop it we're going to pull it like that and that's going to move that quarter turn ball valve out so that your connection is back in the wall and let's say you had a chrome hose that was going to connect up to your toilet all you'd see is this ring this could be paintable this could be whatever color and that hose is going to come through the wall and connect to your toilet and then if you had a problem you could pull it to stop this is going to be on that's going to be stop these also work would work really nicely under your cabinets it would really kind of clean that up but that was cool i'd never seen anything like that nice clean install all right next up on plumbing i actually found out about this one because i got flagged by my inspector that i had done the wrong thing i used a bunch of ot washing machine boxes in fact i used the moda series which i really liked in my laundry room for my main washer and dryer stack but my hvac guy ended up saying hey i really want to use my condensate drain from my kitchen mounted recessed ceiling ductless basically my mini split that's recessed into my kitchen ceiling so he ran it here but i only had one drain and my inspector flagged me honestly i didn't realize this when you have a washing machine and you want a condensate drain or you want a you know water softener something else that needs a drain you need to have two ports for that drain and that's where this od eliminator box comes out and in fact i'm going to be switching what i've got at my house to this same cool devices like i've got in my house it's got a hammer arrestor it's got cooler turn stops on there but what it's doing is it's giving us this right here which is a y so now i've got one drain pipe but i actually have two ports so one of these is going to get taken up with my washing machine my hose is going to go in there and then i'm going to put this little device in there and this is going to mount into there so that my condensate drain from my mitsubishi which is basically one room over we'll be able to go through this knockout on the top of the box right here and then we'll end up in this so it'll go down this drain so now i've got a separate drain for each that is a real problem solver i had no idea i needed it until i got flagged on inspections okay next up this is kind of interesting these balls that you're seeing on the table are actually fire extinguishers i totally didn't understand what this was but these guys contacted me uh about their product and sent me a few samples and i thought this is pretty interesting this little ball if you were to throw this into an active fire the ball would i don't know exactly how but basically uh fall apart and would extinguish the fire now what's the deal with the cage the idea here is that if you had a mechanical room you could actually screw this to the wall and mount this ball above an electrical panel above something that you're worried about catching fire and they have these in various sizes as well let me pull this one out of the box here's this one and of course you could also grab it and here's the crazy part if you check out their videos they actually have a bunch of videos that are basically big old dumpster fires where someone tosses one of these into the fire and boom a big puff ball happens and i have no idea what the secret sauce inside here is but i saw him put some crazy looking fires by just tossing this ball in there i think this could even work in your garage potentially just have this mounted you never have to worry about what's the pressure on your fire extinguisher or somebody used it as long as you can see that the ball is in the cage you could grab this and if your car caught fire uh or something else boom toss it in the fire and that would do it and that wild elod fire i've not uh seen those before but i thought that was kind of cool okay next up the boxshell the inventor on this product contacted me and i saw a short youtube video on how this works and thought man this is a pretty cool product it's pretty straightforward all this is a box that you can fold out and you can basically put this on the side of a single through a multi-gang electrical box you're going to use a standard box and on your outside walls it's going to allow you to use spray foam behind that electrical box to not only seal it but to insulate it well now the video they've got online is pretty cool they set this up with a piece of plexiglass where the uh you know the sheathing would actually be they install the box and it's a little difficult you've got to install the box during the rough end stage but then you're actually not going to foam it until the sheetrock gets installed while you're actually putting the electrical device in so it's a little bit uh i would say intricate in terms of its install but when you watch that foam go in on this box and kind of seal around this piece of plexiglass that allows you to watch it i gotta say it's pretty impressive the other thing i like about this then it would allow you to use a standard bat you know a standard rockwool bat let's say like we have here at the studio and you're going to get really good insulation behind that electrical box very impressive youtube demonstration now i'll be honest as a general contractor if i'm building multiple houses i think this is a little tricky of an install that i probably don't want my guys having to deal with the intricacies of this i think it would be easy to miss one but if you're building your own house and you have the ability to kind of dictate the process and you're intimately involved in all the details from hanging the sheetrock finishing putting electrical boxes in this would be a great way on a really nice budget point to get excellent insulation and excellent air sealing on a traditionally very leaky place in your house if you don't pay attention to those details so let's see what is the website for these guys jboxshell.com i think these are on something like two bucks a pop so pretty darn affordable to use these even on every exterior outlet okay next up on the tool side this is actually not all that new but it is new to me this is the max corporation's 500 psi power light system that's right 500 psi so instead of the standard compressor that's outputting 120 psi this compressor does actually both 120 and 500 psi which means that you have to have specialized guns for it and max has a whole line of guns there's actually a siding nailer that they let me use on my james hardy install the big deal on these and actually all this equipment is that it's quite a bit smaller and lighter they're telling me that these tools in general are forty percent smaller and thirty percent lighter now i actually found out about this through a framer that uh that i'm friends with out in uh the west a guy named tim euler who also writes for the journal of light construction tim's a framer who's in his 40s and as he's getting older in age like i am i'm noticing that heavy tools are really hard on my body so you're going to pay a premium in price this is definitely a more expensive tool system but to have tools that are lighter and easier on your body i think that really makes a difference but the other big deal on these tools is that you can use them in a bunch of other places meaning you could use this on wood to concrete wood to and steel to conquer you could basically eliminate a lot of your power actuated meaning those little 22 shells and replace it with this they have a whole line of stuff when i was at the bow show two or so years ago i got to use one of these tools on a wood to steel connection where you were basically putting a nailer on top of an i-beam so you could put floor joists on it and holy cow that thing was sinking nails in this 500 psi system straight into an i-beam so very impressive tool system and the other thing about this compressor is very quiet very lightweight and you've got two ports two standard psi ports and two high pressure ports so this is an investment but i got to say super impressive highly recommended especially if you're like me and you're thinking about gosh if i'm going to be in this business another 20 years i need to take care of my body all right while we're talking about framing tools i actually have a brand new framing material that i want to talk to you about let's cut to the job site [Music] ibs x what's up builder friends how are you guys welcome to my house under that's right i've been building my own personal house now and on social i've seen several of you in instagram comment what's up with the ram board that you put down during framing we normally would put this down over finished hardwoods or uh you know a finished floor but i've actually been hiding something from you i have a secret underneath this rainbow that i couldn't show on anything whether it's videos or social media but here today i'm gonna reveal it for you huber engineered woods the maker of advantech and zip system sheathing we've been using their products and loving them for years they got a brand new product and i actually have the prototype in my house this is actually a brand new category of subfloor here it is guys advantech x factor this is a brand new product it's basically the core the underneath of this is advantech and then bonded to the surface just like the zip system sheathing is this facer which is basically adding an extra layer of waterproofing to this advantage such that it has a 500-day no sand guarantee it's really going to be that much more bomber already than advantech which is already incredible couple big benefits of this though it's much smoother than standard advantage which means that job site communications are going to be really nice for instance right over here i marked for my framer hey i need to go ahead and frame this or reframe this opening for a 2868 pocket door and my sharpie nothing special wrote on there perfectly i actually wrote that several weeks ago and you can see even today it's still in perfect condition so job site communications job site clean up and additional weather ability a lot of benefits here to this product now let's get into a couple of the tech notes on this it's only available in 23 30 seconds normally basically a three quarter inch floor and it can be installed in up to 24 inch on center joists now i did something different with it though for this install i actually used my buddy steve basics method to make an insulated slab so what i did here was i put foam on top of my concrete and this was an existing slab a house that i thought i was going to remodel and ended up building a new house my exterior walls were framed i was totally dried in already and then on top of that foam i used two layers of devantek the first layer is just standard three-quarter advantage but this top layer i used advantec x factor now this blue edging you see here this is part of the innovation process you're probably not going to see that in the final product and the color may vary slightly but it's basically going to be a gold finish this was a pre-production kind of a prototype advantech that they shipped me to the job site but if this isn't stocked locally now it's going to be very soon and definitely ask your lumber yards ask them by name for advantech x factor very cool product and i think this is going to revolutionize that premium subfloor category guys thanks for joining me for this special presentation and honestly it's been nice to finally reveal what's been my secret for all these weeks and to learn more about this you can go to advantechxfactor.com next up magic stairs now access to your attic is critical and especially if you're thinking about doing storage or access for mechanicals changing filters that sort of thing you don't want a rickety attic system you want a nice one now over the years i've looked at all kinds of different options out there and i've used rainbow stairs quite a bit but this one trumps them all and in fact i set up my house to put one in in the future it's called magic stair it's a quite large stair system check out that big opening i've got but what's cool about this is when it comes out of telescopes and it gives you a true staircase it's a 45 degree angle it's got a handrail and it's all automatically done off a button there's a motor that's dropping the unit down and dropping those stairs out very very cool system you can find out more on this one at magicstairs.com check out this guy's new tool from dust hog looks like a simple set of pipes but what it does is it extracts the dust when you're dumping things into a bucket that silica dust is really bad for you you don't want to breathe it and by hooking this up to your shop vac we can basically collect all that without it poofing up into the air now when we did our schluter pan at my house we used this and i got to say i was shocked by how well it worked it seems so simple that you'd almost think it wouldn't work and yet the opposite is true it's magical it totally keeps that big poof from coming up out of the bucket when you dump it you can learn more at dusthog.com okay guys and the last thing i wanted to mention was a company that i encountered when i was in canada but i've honestly not seen them a lot because i think they're based mainly in the cold snowy north and that's these guys so prima makes a fairly new line this has been out a few years called resisto and these are kind of a premium brand of house wrap flashing tapes and icf waterproofing that they sent me some samples on and i got to say i'm really impressed you know the kind of evolution of house wrap has been house wraps that would get stapled on and then the peel and stick style house wraps i think are the next generation but when we think about peel and sticks there's kind of three levels of peel and stick the first level is the asphaltic based ones that's kind of old technology we've had that for a long time those are often the ones that end up in the stick and peel situation but then up from that is the butyl based and butyl is a really nice step up we've got better cold weather application which of course is important to our friends in the north the other thing about butyl is it's much more compatible we need to be cautious with any time we're using a vinyl framed window especially that nailing flange because the asphaltic flashing tapes can actually eat that flange butyl is uh not going to react with that so this is a much better option and it's going to stick better so all their flashings are beetle-based and then the next evolution up from that is the acrylics and that's what this house wrap is and i really like this style of housewrap now i don't know all the specifics about resistor i've not actually used this but i got to say from this sample they sent me very tough and durable feels like a jeans material it has a perm rating so that when we're in the north we're going to be able to dry through that and it appears to have a really nice acrylic based adhesive on the back so you're going to get good air sealing on your buildings as well i'll put a link to all these resisto products so you can check them out especially if you're watching the build show in canada guys i think that's it if you're not currently a subscriber guys hit that subscribe button below we do this content once a month but we publish tuesday and friday here in the build show and by the way if you have a new product that you think i should know about most of these were from one of you that said either you should check this out matt i'm using this or you are a manufacturer or an inventor that reached out to me and that's really fun i love to be able to
