from strange ghost towns to creepy underground locations these are 10 mysterious abandoned places around the world number 10 al Jazeera Al Hamra United Arab Emirates let's kick things off by exploring this haunting village in the UAE located on a tidal island meaning that at high tide the place was an island and at low tide it was connected to the mainland al Jazeera Al Hamra was a bustling pearl fishing community in the 1830s the population of the red island was around 4,000 people at which point I think it should be called a town what really makes this place strange is the reasoning behind its abandonment mainly the fact that there isn't one main reason sure the oil boom drove people to other parts of the country the dyeing pearling business also then helped but that's happened in so many other towns that survived to this day all the residents moved out and mass in 1968 stories of jinns and no not the nice Disney type jinns are rampant in the area which has definitely increased interest in the place many of the original residents still owned their property in the village they just don't live there number 9 Evergreen Cemetery Virginia I discovered this location by chance to be honest never have been one to look around for a creepy cemeteries online and trust me this one is a 10 out of 10 on the creepy factor and kind of sad as well the cemetery dates back to 1891 and it is a historical african-american cemetery it was still in use in the late 1980s but the privately owned land has been reclaimed by Nature in recent times what we have been looking at is pictures of the decrepit mausoleum I can only assume those caskets are still occupied so why did this happen well the original owners of the land decided to sell it to another cemetery management group both went bankrupt but this story has somewhat happy ending after all there is an that group of citizens that are cleaning up the grounds day by day and maybe all the people in history associated with this place will not be forgotten number eight great zimbabwe ruins in bob way founded sometime in the 11th century the ruins known as great zimbabwe are the only thing left in the area from a time long gone when it was discovered in the fifteenth century the city was already in ruins so it's not exactly known why it was abandoned and where the estimated population of 18,000 people went it is believed that the ruins we are looking at are the remains of the royal palace and interestingly enough the nation of zimbabwe is named after this city one translation for the word zimbabwe is large house of stone and by the looks of it this is indeed the great zimbabwe there are many other ruins in the area that are just called zimbabwe x' the main structure is also the oldest and largest one located in southern africa with walls as high as 36 feet that extended some 820 feet there is evidence to suggest that more than 20 million ounces of gold were extracted from the area and some of it made it all the way to China the site was discovered again in 1871 and at the time the site was associated with the biblical story of king solomon and the queen of sheba in the years since the site has been shrouded in controversy and censorship but that's a serious story for another time some of the reasons for abandonment include climate change depletion of nearby mines and political instability that does not sound like fun at all number 7 pit here see Castle Ukraine located in Ukraine built by the Polish and Lithuanian abandoned by the Communists I believe this is not the first time we have stumbled across this geopolitical anomaly the pit here t castle was built in 1640 by the order of get this the polish-lithuanian commonwealth grand crown hetman in other words the highest military ranking officer of united Poland in Lithuania the place was so cool and important that it had a moat with a drawbridge Iren cannons and fortified walls the motto of the castle against that's the right word to use right hmm anyway the motto of the castle was a crown of military labors is victory victories triumph triumph is rest in mean form it means war is peace the palace was seriously stunning on the inside as well sporting different themed rooms fancy art marble fireplaces and in other words it was fitting for a king after the turn of the 19th century the castle was nothing but trouble it was ransacked multiple times it was used as a tuberculosis clinic it was left abandoned for decades by the Communist Party and eventually it caught on fire I guess no one cared since they led the castle burn for three weeks trade damages were estimated at twelve million dollars oh yeah fun fact the last prince to own the property saved a lot of the art and valuables from the castle in 1939 they can be found in Sao Paulo Brazil number 6 Qian Bao hoary India Oh Joan bored you merely adopted the dog always born owner or whatever as you might have guessed this place became famous when it was featured in The Dark Knight Rises movie but trust me on this it was here long before the movie it is believed the stepwell was built sometime around 800 to 900 AD and it was a great place for people to get some water and escape the heat the air is about 5 to 10 degrees cooler at the bottom of the well and all the fancy stuff on the side was reserved for Royals so what happened time time happened over the years most of the stepwells in India fell into disuse some were turned into landfills others were completely destroyed it also didn't help that the British Raj also outlawed these wells because they were seen as on sanitary even though some locals still visit the well it is safe to say that it does not serve its original purpose anymore but its architectural beauty remains intact number five Nechayev mansion Russia in the small village of Bolivia no you can find yourself exploring a giant mansion that has seen better days all the stock images I found describe it as the machiya family mansion but the only nature if I could find on Google was gain achieve who was born a lower-class boy joined the revolutionary movement in Russia and eventually died in prison doesn't seem like he would have had time to be building mansions in Russia's countryside ok here we go I found it the actual owner is Yuri Nechayev who was fancy enough to have a portrait painted now that's class looks like he was a glass manufacturer I don't know where I'm going with this I tried to find out why this house was abandoned but no luck let's just assume it was haunted fun fact in the backyard you can spot the first-ever diag red hyperbolic structure meaning something number 4 most fast subway Russia well let's stick around Russia for a little while longer yeah and explore the underground of Moscow primarily the most claw metro to the supposed second top secret part of the Moscow Metro there runs adjacent to it is it real I don't know but it's definitely possible there's just so many pictures of abandoned tunnels and stations and there's some really interesting quotes from former officials they are definitely it's real it it exists whatever it is we can assume that not all parts of it are still in operation and by the way have you guys seen what the regular mascara Metro looks like it's damn impressive number 3 Coleman Scott and the media ghost town check desolate check strange check here really beautiful double check these are the remains of the German mining town located than the median desert some five miles from the coast Coleman's cough was once home to people who decided that diamond mining in Africa the turn of the 20th century was the best choice for them in 1928 the riches diamond bearing deposits were found 150 miles south of the village and everyone left seriously they just packed their bags and left I won't bore you with details since this place is pretty famous but no matter what it has to feel weird walking around houses that are covered by three to five feet of sand number 2 Chia Tora Georgia located right in the heart of Georgia the country Chi iturra was once a commercially exploitable town that thrived off of the local mining industry in the 50s it was decided that walking from the city to the mines took way too much time and decreased production so the government installed many of these cable car systems nowadays many of them lead to nowhere well not exactly nowhere rather derelict buildings that no longer operate believe it or not some of these trams are still operational and her being used by residents of the city to this day I would not be so eager to jump into one of these metal coffins as the locals call them the whole city is surrounded by abandoned mines and processing plants and those cable cars definitely add to the mysterious nature of the city I imagine now long from now the town might be completely abandoned and all that will be left is the random death trap of a cable car not too far from the city of Chia Tora you can find yourself in the Georgian backcountry staring at the cat's key pillar on top you can see a long-forgotten church with a few hermit cells Hermits are religious people who choose to live in solitude the structures were built sometime in the 9th century and because of their great defensive location they have survived to this day number one viaduct Petrobras Brazil in the jungle surrounding South Paulo you can stumble across an unfinished viaduct the government had plans of joining these roads and a lot of the work for the mountain pass began before plans were actually complete which is a great way to waste funds and materials because by the time this massive stretch of road was complete the Planning Committee decided to build the roads along the coastline right now there is a way for you to get somewhat close to this stretch of road you just got to be careful very careful check out the future comment below subscribe for more world on earth
