[Music] you may think you know everything there is to know about Nintendo but you probably don't okay sure it's definitely impressive that you can name each of the Koopalings have a shiny Mewtwo when your completed pokedex and can finish the orc arena of times water temple without swearing man you're good but that doesn't mean you know everything some of the more popular and well-known in Tendo facts are actually false no matter how many times you've heard them or wish they were true before we begin hit that subscribe button to stay up to date with all our content and bring that Bell to become part of our notification squad so you never miss a video without further ado here are 10 lies you were told about Nintendo Mario's original name was jump man when Mario made his big debut in Donkey Kong he wasn't called Mario supposedly the Nintendo mascot was originally called chump man probably because he jumps and is a man while that is all true jump man was certainly not Mario's original name according to none other than Shigeru Miyamoto the man behind many of Nintendo's characters including Mario he planned on calling jump man mr. video he wanted to use mr. video in every single game it seems like Miyamoto was inspired by Alfred Hitchcock who made brief cameos in every single one of his movies and manga artists like Osamu Tezuka and fujio akatsuka who had reoccurring characters appear in completely different series Miyamoto thought mr. video could fill a similar role luckily for all of us he changed his mind fast on the name mr. video wouldn't be the last time you moto would give a character a boring or strange moniker Mario's first love interest Pauline was originally just called lady maybe you named your dog lady but definitely not a human Mario's last name is also Mario and even link the protagonist of The Legend of Zelda's full name is link link yeah Miyamoto might be an amazing game developer but he completely sucks at naming characters Donkey Kong is a mistranslation of monkey Kong okay so Donkey Kong is a really odd name especially for a character who's an ape not a pack animal there's nothing donkey about Donkey Kong except maybe his IQ but we're not here to take shots at the loveable character we're here just to make fun of his name and it's one hell of a strange name in fact his name is so strange many fans assume Donkey was supposed to read monkey and the current spelling is nothing more than a translation error typo well it turns out that that was wishful thinking because it's not translation error according to the great NIA motto he found out donkey could also mean goofy and he liked the ring to it we hope you all know Kong comes from King Kong at least either way the name definitely sounds better as DK Donkey Kong than GM goofy monkey of course the native english-speakers the name still doesn't make any sense but Miyamoto knows it Nintendo of America even pushed back on the name which is pretty much gibberish because nobody who speaks English as their first language thinks that donkey means goofy but Miyamoto rejected the name change in its entirety at least he didn't call him donkey donkey so it's a slight improvement to me Amato's naming skills the NES was Nintendo's first home console the NES might be the system that made the word Nintendo synonymous with video games it also made me the huge nerd I am today but it wasn't in dentals first attempt at a home console starting in 1977 Nintendo released a handful of home consoles solely in Japan under the color tv-game banner which brought some of Nintendo's biggest arcade games in the players living rooms the reason you've probably never heard of the color TV game system is because it was released only in Japan and mostly because it sucked the plug and play console came out before Donkey Kong Nintendo's first big hit and most of the titles on the system were just knockoffs of other more successful games the first two systems color tv-game 6 and color tv-game 15 tried to one-up the competition with games like hockey and volleyball but they were just slightly different variations of pong color tv-game block breaker contain a single player breakout clone while the last entry simply called computertv game could only play one game a computer version of the board game othello named computer othello is this video just filled with bad names or what the games were not very exciting to say the least still the color tv-game line wasn't a complete bust overall the consoles sold around 3 million copies and the color tv-game block breaker was the first nintendo product ever made by Miyamoto who went on to create pretty much every Nintendo character you love in the end things worked out pretty well for Nintendo Super Mario Bros was an NES launch title Super Mario Bros might be the NES s flagship title has it even came with most of the consoles but unlike Super Mario World for the Super Nintendo or Super Mario 64 for the n64 Super Mario Bros wasn't actually a launch title at least not as far as we can tell in Japan it's pretty clear the Famicom the Japanese name for the NES came out on July 15th 1983 while production on Super Mario Bros didn't begin until early 1985 boom case closed right wrong for the US release things got a little more interesting videogame historians claim Super Mario Bros came out sometimes in 1986 while the NES hit in the US on October 18 1985 but not all sources agree Nintendo's official database and many gamers would agree that Super Mario Bros launched alongside the NES on October 18th while an internal Nintendo database actually puts the Super Mario Bros release date a month later on November 17th 1985 it's even backed up by some 80s marketing material ah the 80s so if Super Mario Bros wasn't out what were gamers playing instead in Japan early adopters must have really liked Donkey Kong since the Famicom's third and final launch game was Popeye a complete ripoff of Donkey Kong with spinach instead of bananas mm-hmm in America fans were enjoying classics like 10-yard fight Hogan's Alley stack-up and duck hunt which actually holds up pretty well today blowing into cartridges helps Nintendo consoles read them better everyone knew this trick if your NES SNES or n64 was having trouble reading a game you would take the cartridge out blow into it as hard as you could and put it right back in no one could explain how it worked but it did or did it in the years following the Golden Age of cartridges researchers have actually taken the time to discover blowing into cartridges actually worked and they've all come up empty according to the staff at Mental Floss it all has to do with the placebo effect apparently simply removing the cartridge and putting it back in made the difference it had nothing to do with blowing air into it see the Pens these cartridges used to connect to the consoles were cheaply made and had plenty of issues combine this with a dirt that built up inside the machine after spending months on the living-room floor and it became pretty difficult to get a connection on the first second or tenth try but if he kept trying you will succeed in fact blowing into your favorite games might have actually made things worse the NES is instruction manual warns that one breath can slowly damage the pin connectors and Mental Floss believes the extra moisture can just accelerate the process putting a second cartridge on top of the one you want to play in order to weigh it however yeah that definitely worked Justin Bailey worked on Metroid it's common knowledge that finishing Metroid in under an hour can unlock the steamy special ending where same as appears in her underwear it's an odd reward for completing the game in such a short time but it's definitely there if that wasn't hilarious enough you could input the name Justin Bailey at the game's password screen and strips Amos down to her swimsuit like zero suit it's pretty much the sexiest outfit they could fit into a 26 by 48 pixels most gamers believe justin bailey was a programmer who worked on Metroid but that's easily debunked by the credits when neither a Justin or a Bailey appears others claim Bailey is in English or Australian name for a bathing-suit making Justin a Bailey makes sense but no such term exists according to George Sinfield Oh former writer for Nintendo Power it's completely coincidental that the password resembles a real-life name it makes a bit of sense because the game doesn't use pre-programmed passwords another password composed solely of zeros and twos can also allow you to play in same as a zero suit so it's probably just a coincidence the thing is if the password was purely coincidental how did anyone find it Sinfield believed someone called justin bailey just input his own name and lo and behold was able to play a zero suit samus now there's a surprise for you that must have been awesome for Justin Bailey wherever in the world he was Super Mario Bros 3 was played at the Nintendo World Championships when you think of the Nintendo World Championships you probably think of the climax of the 1989 kid's film The Wizard near the end of the movie Fred savages little brother enters the video Armageddon game tournament in hopes of winning the $50,000 grand prize after a grueling competition he destroys the competition and a round of Super Mario Bros 3 which coincidentally debuted in America a couple of months after the movie came out the thing is that's not how the actual Nintendo World Championships went down at all for starters nwc competitors were segmented into three different age categories so you'd never have a young child competing against a teenager secondly Nintendo World Championship winners received a $10,000 savings bond a television set a Geo Metro convertible which was probably not very useful for those 11 and under and a copy of the Nintendo World Championships game cartridge which can go for over a hundred thousand dollars on eBay even worse Super Mario Bros 3 never appeared in the history of tournament instead competitors face three separate challenges collect 50 coins in the original Super Mario Bros complete one lap and rad racer and rack up as many points as possible in Tetris before time ran out so yeah the wizard lied to us all just advertise Super Mario Bros 3 not cool really not cool Nintendo developed the power glove speaking of the wizard the movie introduced us to the power glove it's signature moment comes about halfway through the movie when Lucas Spartan the ultimate 80s cool kids stereotype and probably one of the best teenage villains in the history of film makes a fist and says I love the power glove it's so bad Lucas was definitely right just not in the way he expected if he never tried one take our word for it the power glove is flat Oh terrible the wizard may make it seem like a power glove is a magical device capable of letting you use everyday motions to control your favorite games but it's nothing like that you can't use your hand like you're holding a steering wheel to drive in the real world it barely works don't blame Nintendo however while the power glove is black and gray design makes it look like a Nintendo product it was actually designed by the Abrams Gentile entertainment and manufactured by Mattel who used cheap parts which barely registered players movements Paul Nintendo did was slap the logo on the box that makes a lot of sense because the power glove lacks the quality we've come to expect a Nintendo products although this is the same company who made the Virtual Boy Nintendo is probably just ashamed of the power glove as you should be for shame the cast of Star Fox has robotic legs in dental fans love conspiracy theories and starfox is no different if you look closely at Star Fox's cast of furry characters especially as depicted by the puppets used in Star Fox is promotional materials and a Nintendo powers spin-off comic you might notice it looks like the characters have robotic legs which start around their knees this has led starfox fans all around the world to believe the starfox crew had their lower legs hacked off and replaced with prosthetics it's not because they lost their legs in a fight or anything these gamers believe the crew willingly chopped off their own legs to help them endure the g-forces suffered during high speed flight in fact the stories become so popular it's pretty much accepted as truth among the starfox community well Dillon Cuthbert the co-creator of starfox says it's all made up he actually laughed after being asked the question much to the chagrin of hardcore fans Cuthbert says they're just and while he was thrilled to see how imagine if the community was he also thought it was a bit ridiculous Shakira me Amato also agrees with Cuthbert claiming it sounds insanely painful for anyone to willingly lose their legs so we can finally throw all this sci-fi nonsense in the garbage besides if they were gonna remove any part of the Star Fox teams body they would have started with slippies vocal cords Yoshi is male and Berto is female when it comes to Nintendo when the genders of some of their animal characters things can get a little confusing case in point Yoshi and Berto in English Mario's dinosaur pal is typically referred to as masculine pronouns but he also lays eggs which is not something males typically do this could partially be explained by how has proved in Yoshi's Island super mario world - Yoshi is a species not an individual in Paper Mario the thousand-year door one Yoshi talks about his wife while a pair of Yoshi's where one is clearly male and the other is clearly female appear on Yoshi's tropical island board in the very first Mario Party if Yoshi's gonna be both male and female how can males lay eggs well according to the Japanese version of super smash bros melee Yoshi's reproduce asexually so either gender can lay eggs but what about Berto just a quick look at character and you would be a hundred percent certain she's female the pink color the bow and the long eyelashes come on but in the manual for Super Mario Bros 2 it says Berto thinks he's a girl and spits eggs from his mouth so Bertos a boy might well in the japan-exclusive game captain rainbow Berto is arrested for using the woman's bathroom and you must find a way to prove she's a woman this leads players to find something vibrating in her bedroom so she's a girl after all oh this is so confusing Miyamoto please help us finally we've helped you get rid of all those false Nintendo facts that you've had in your head for decades you're welcome did you agree with this list are there any Nintendo lies you've been told
