003 - Jill Bogdanowicz How I build LUTs

a lot of times people ask me how I build lots yes I have a certain library that I kind of start with is pieces of the puzzle but then I just really go by feel like I build it by feel a lot of times or I amend it like okay this is consistently feeling I don't know like I want to pull out more color separation and this particular color so then I'll do that and build that into the L and then watch how that performs and then on several different types of scenes and and I always tested on all different types of things right so I usually make one lookup table per show there are exceptions but in general I do that and then so that one lookup table has to be technically sound it has to hold up in all situations and it has to not break anything yeah which we all know well and maybe you don't know but you know as you're working with lookup tables right like some people may not know that a lookup table can look okay on one shot you try to put it on another shot with a very specific color that you've never really tested before and it can create artifacts or if you have visual effects those guys need super clean lookup tables cuz you don't want in any way make their job more difficult yeah or break their visual effects in any way or show any lines or edges or have add any artifacts so one of the things when people ask me about lookup tabls always say is it has to go through I have an image science team at at company 3 who is super strong always goes through and vets that all the lookup tables that I make to make sure that they are strong that I'm not breaking any anything um sometimes I make some crazy Li up tables and I can break things and they're like yeah we got to fix this I'm like okay fine we can fix this but you know um it's not just only by eye and it's it's really vetted quite heavily um when we do these things so when I first start working on a movie I'll come up with a couple different looks usually give a handful to the cinematographer to test through hair and makeup or something like that test that they do and then they give it back to me like you know we really like this but whatever like let's tweak this or tweak that and then I'll just amend it and give it back to them we kind of keep doing that until we settle on one
