okay you have some cds drink cans and coffee lids these are bad right let me show you how i do bottom of the barrel crafting [Music] first this energy drink style skinny can let's work on the ends first up the bottom these can be opened with a manual can opener it's a bit fiddly make sure the toothed wheel is on the outside as a bonus it leaves free texture you can use this little dome to change up the shape of the top of the can but we won't be doing that this time no we have these terrible flimsy lids from delivery food sauce very cool design on the end here i use a bit of cardboard so it has something to adhere to the top apparently can be removed too on this side i use the tub part of that sauce container to make a false or implied inner dimension once the edge is filled in the idea is that this will look like a massive heavy pipe instead of a flimsy tin can fill the gaps with spackle then plane away the excess once it is set satisfying now to further obscure the original can we can stick on some rivets little details like this draw attention away from the terrible can next up i use this slightly larger ice tea style can which is covered in nft art it can be opened the same way yikes good thing i have two this time around i plan to shorten the can to change its profile [Music] this was super easy to cut down and even easier to press the two halves together i'm not being serious please be super careful this is like squeezing a knife [Music] let's add a bit of contrast with this mostly rectangular piece of a floss container [Music] various cables and pipes made from hair elastics and stuff it doesn't get much lower in the barrel than string and twist ties the video might have just started but it's not too late to hit the like button if you have a printer then you probably have wasted your money on ink and in return all you got were these little plastic tubs good news they're going to be an integral part of this project i like to rough up the plastic like this to see if i can achieve any kind of metal-ish surface texture that's a tiny file turns out a rasp is what you really want some rivets to sell the scale this thing from inside a floss container bread tab panels and this cardboard tube is a bit of surface gribble don't have bread tabs or floss how about assorted boxes use the natural shape of cardboard tabs to make some panels throw beads upon the surface and spend way too long nudging them around keep on doing this until you have more than one time for some filler i take this ylc paper from the inside of a wine case this edge part is kind of nifty i will make a few little boxes to fill in various gaps the detail isn't the best but it's ready to go and it's good enough for this purpose if we can cram in enough little details it should distract everyone from how bad the materials are like the can next up i take a few of these zarfs and waffley latte cups that gave their lives to protect my delicate hands from overly hot coffee and extract the mini corrugated sheets to build a shanty shack for eric to live in i don't want to work too hard for structures so i'll just use a chunk of this box now this next part this is a good one speaking of coffee how about these flimsy lids hmm slightly round shape how can this contribute gothically to the grim dark quarter it and shave it down instant gothic archway i always have these things left over what a bad material right wait look at the ridges here we call that detail it even has kind of an arched shape stir sticks this can be a pillar right yeah we can make it work more cheating with this wood fins box and some interior lid detail that should wrap up this gothic machine chunk alright we have enough components time to assemble these risers got the old disk here we can get a good texture with this drywall tape i rough up the surface to improve adhesion and also cut my finger off once that's glued down i start to add things like the can pipe and the ink boxes [Music] notice the intentionally not lined up elements i'm cool like that i use a variety of lids to add in more shapes i don't really want to say detail this is just for the bulk [Music] i have tons of these little super glue lids so i better use them for something some lids go onto the top cd as well i think the plan was to line this up perfectly and have the cool details hanging down did it work let's watch and find out floss case and a round lid to further mix up the profile of this ink box ha a full glue tube this is the worst jug and yet i'm going to use it here and i'm going to get away with it [Music] there's a cool number stamped in here so that can be some type of serial number i have another one here to add onto the [Music] pipe i make another disc floor and start building the next riser i placed the pop can part even further to one side to aid in that asymmetry and i had plans to use this old tape holder as a continuation of the round structure more printer ink boxes here these are the sort of unifying element along with the uniform shape of the discs attach the eric's hobby work shack on there and the fork handle as a support beam tabs and these tubes are good gribblies to cover the grounds maybe an old pen too nothing says industrial grim dark like wood some popsicle sticks to support the gothic archway access point standard cardboard tube from tin foil or something then this actual foil thing from a wine bottle it's a bit flimsy so we'll reinforce it with an internal cardboard structure using some of these moderately constructed card lock boxes to fill in a bit of space with supplies aren't that great i like to keep the eyes busy okay more popsicle sticks to make some metal banding on the floor [Music] and a bit from inside a highlighter marker going back to that first one it's time to add a bit of random card detail again anytime you can break up the plain surface the more likely you are to get away with the crime of using a pop can more rivets here too for the same reason [Music] time to unify and gap fill with my new filler product spackle backle with a b this is another way to transform these random pieces into a single cohesive terrain piece and of course the thinned spackle soup is used on the smaller seams next i needed to make some terrible cables wires and hair elastics are cheap but string is really the bottom of the barrel bundle that up with some twist ties and drape it over and between the existing structure [Music] a gratuitous helping of mod podge or other pva glue to hide the fabric texture on these cables and just like my grimdark gribble wall i use a bunch of loose bolts to add a deeper layer of detail and greaves into the nooks and crannies i prepare another disc with drywall tape but this time i don't film it and i cover it in extra glue and spackle look at that a perfect fit hey look at my coffee lid there bud got that good texture eh let's give her and put that to good use this will be used as a kind of underhang serving to obscure or hide the overly thin and obvious appearance of the cd oh and what happened next nice okay i prime with black and white spray paint no big deal every single person seems to do this xenothel highlight and all that jazz i don't even get any of this pre-shade in the final product but what are you gonna do rustification must be achieved thankfully i just invented something called texture paint and i will demonstrate its secret recipe sprinkle magic kitchen dust and sand into a dirty tub then glue in some paints along with the new sb podge sb varnish and sb medium glop this all over the piece and beware this is our last chance to hide any unsightly gaps or lines if you still see bad lines call me out in the comments as you can see once it's dry it's completely perfect okay the main color here is going to be what i call necromundo green it's kind of a grungy blue green brown tone you always have to mix your own paints if you want to claim that it's a cheap build you will never find a real paint at the bottom of the barrel this gets really roughly over brushed on covering all of the primer coat and the majority of the rusty parts the texture comes through nicely here though the dusty chalky quality to these cheap acrylic paints actually ends up looking kind of good on this train what are you gonna what are you gonna do so far so good ah but look at these large plain surfaces good thing i just invented stencils mmm that fresh off the etsy press stencil smell these are very easy to apply even to this lumpy textured surface okay pretend that you have an airbrush ready to go and you didn't have to take it apart and clean it from last time i tint this white ink with yellow and then add a bit of varnish since ink has kind of a weak binder i am known for very accurate airbrushing but i'll use this sheet of paper just in case my masking fails flawless but wait i hear you cry out i have not an airbrush to use fine let's take a crack at sponging with these bad boys okay that was super easy i add numbers onto the rest of the pieces as well it's the 90s and we need caution stripes oh satisfied sponging on various yellows and oranges for an easy gradient i can't say enough good things about these stencils even a seasoned veteran like myself can't paint all those straight lines without a little help check the description for more info i undercoat the cables then i paint the cables with colors i might have gone too colorful here but we can always layer on the washes to tone that down there's a small gap in the voice over here so what are you waiting for subscribe now [Music] a bit of copper and silver for metallic highlights the liquid stuff is decent but i want that solid [Music] paint [Music] oops i almost forgot to put various paints onto the shack these are just mixed up from leftover cable paints we're about to get messy so the old school mat has to come back use only scratch bashing approved mixing products in order to achieve the perfect wash we have a few flavors here rust grunge and green always use a bit of water to avoid getting those unsightly rings or staining from the wash once these washes or glazes dry you just keep on layering it up until you're happy with the grunge level hint it should probably have a lot of grunge a special thanks to my good and epic patrons you're the reason these projects keep coming if you want to get in on the action and help me to produce these videos please visit the patreon and consider joining i hope everyone learned how to use these terrible pop cans and old cds to make passable terrain as i always say the parts that make it up are sometimes not quite as good as the entire thing is in the end when seen as the sum of those parts remember that stencils go a long way towards that final look and there's a discount code for them in the description check it out if you didn't like the video and you think that drink cans are fine just the way they are then leave me your meanest comment remember that there's a dislike button too what are you gonna do huh punk come on alright friends see you in the next build video
