what's up Gamers if you're following the Retro emulation scene pow Kitty is a brand you've probably heard of but pow Kitty is not a company that has really impressed me in the past my perception of them has always been that they use cheap components to produce cheap products that just look interesting enough for a quick cash grab and that's not good enough for me I'm a man who does his best to be excellent no matter what I'm doing and I expect the same from everyone else don't half show up earn everyone's Respect by doing the best job you can do now I realize that I don't always succeed at that sometimes I fail thank God there is Grace for those failures and sometimes others will fail also and I will extend the same Grace I've been given to them but po Kitty frustrates me because they don't seem to care whether they succeed or fail at least not until now this is the Pow Kitty rgb3 and over the past month I've been testing this strenuously to find the cracks it's not perfect but they made me believe that they're trying and that really excites me for the future of pal Kitty I'm not going to lie this has become one of my favorite whoop boop boop this has become one of my favorite retro devices of 2023 in a very short time and I can't wait to tell you what is excellent and what needs to be shown some Grace but as we get started I just wanted to take a moment to say thank you to you I know there are a gazillion other videos you could have chosen but you clicked on this one and that truly means a lot I'm working hard to bring you quality content and gaming recommendations so I appreciate the view and I hope you'll consider sticking around for a while because I have a lot more to come let's get into it the rgb3 is unique in that there are a ton of vertical handhelds like the RG 35xx plus that I'll be reviewing soon and there are a ton of horizontal handhelds like the retroid pocket 3 plus which I reviewed earlier this year but the RGB 30 doesn't really fit either it's not vertical but because the controls are on the side but it's not really a traditional horizontal device either because the screen isn't 16x9 or even 4x3 in fact I don't know of any other gaming console on the market as of December 2023 that has a screen or form factor like this and I applaud pow Kitty for this out of the-box thinking I absolutely love how oddly different this is this screen has a 1 by1 aspect ratio it is a 720x 720 4in display and I I think they've really nailed it for the Retro Gaming Niche with this display size most devices in this market either have a 640x480 4x3 display or a 1280 x 720 widescreen display now the 4x3 displays are pretty good for most 8 and 32-bit systems but they're not so great for vertical arcade games or Nintendo DS and 16x9 displays are great for more modern widescreen games but most of these machines aren't powerful enough to play those this one by one display makes everything look great there's more room for the dual screen DS more room for vertical games more room for Pico 8 and honestly more room for those 4x3 systems too look at new Super Mario Brothers on the r 36s which is a 4x3 display compared to the rgb3 that is a significant difference and it's not just that the screen is larger the resolution is also higher we have a higher pixel density on the rgb3 and the color saturation at least to my eyes is also much more vibrant it's very hard to show off just how great this screen looks recording it like this so I'll just say this to Pal Kitty well done this display has set a higher bar of Excellence that I want to see you reaching for let's go also if you're watching this and you want to sponsor a video or send me a review unit of your next great product I might be interested let's talk one of the other things I have to give them huge props for is the game collections that ship with this device I've reviewed quite a few retro handhelds on the channel this year and this is hands down no doubt 100% for sure the best collection of ROMs that I've seen come with any device a lot of these companies boast that you'll get 6,000 games or whatever but then you boot up your device and you find a lot of duplicates you find a lot of hacked ROMs you find a lot of ROMs that are in Japanese instead of English and that's fine if you speak those languages but I don't I only know that this says Mario because I use Google Translate it's really exciting to see Final Fantasy 7 on here but it's way more exciting to boot Final Fantasy 7 and find all the menus and dialogue are in English and that's the way it's been with these collections now this comes with 10,000 games and they're not all in English but literally all the ones I've been interested in so far have been and that's not something I can say about any other retro handheld I've tested this year not only are they the North American versions of these games but they're also set up in alphabetical order they have box art available there aren't any duplicates that I've seen seriously look at what comes with the r 36s this is what you see a lot of with these systems out of the box box art or a screenshot on a few random games sporadically games all out of order some of them start with numbers for no reason it's just a mess and sure you could take the SD card out and go through all these Collections and delete and move and organize and rename but who wants to do that when there are literally thousands to go through pal Kitty got this right and they deserve some praise for that one of the other excellent decisions they made with this device is that it ships with gel OSS that stands for just enough Linux operating system and this is probably my favorite retro OS it looks gorgeous on this display too gel OSS or jealous is really awesome for a few reasons one is it seamlessly works with retro achievement which is a community made Achievement System for retro games you can make a free account online then sign in on here and when you complete a task a little notification pops up and tells you what you achieved I'm not usually a Trophy Hunter but I have to admit that it is really cool to see this while playing Super Mario 64 for example it also integrates with scraper which is another free service scraper sets all your ROMs up with box art gameplay Clips game descriptions fan ratings and more and I absolutely love seeing those things as I'm perusing through the games on here looking for something to play it's so helpful another way it uses those gameplay Clips is for the screen saver when the screen saver starts it shows Random clips from the games on your card you can advance to the next one by hitting right on the d-pad and then when you see something that looks interesting you just hit start to jump into that game it's a really cool feature and it's just fun to see all these random games pop up on the screen another awesome feature is that jell gets over theair updates thanks to the rgb3 having Wi-Fi capabilities and the developers seem to be putting out bug fixes and new features just about every week I mean they're actively trying to improve your gaming experience and not charging you a dime for it that's incredible but this isn't a jel review it's an rgb3 review so what about the hardware Wi-Fi is good I don't know how fast it could potentially go but I've been satisfied with it I've never had any complaints about the speed I do have one complaint about it from a software perspective please jealous team can you add a feature where we can save networks we have connected to previously right now it only remembers one network at a time so if you leave the house and go somewhere else you have to type in a new network password every time and then again when you get back home it's really tedious and passwords are getting longer and more difficult to remember I'll survive but it would be so nice to be able to store at least four or five networks especially since retro achievements don't register at all unless you're online when you earn the achievement I've missed a lot of them because I forgot to connect to a network anyway back to Hardware soundwise this does have stereo speakers they sound all right I've heard better I've heard worse they get the job done one weird bug I've encountered is that about every third or fourth time I boot this up the audio just doesn't work but after I reboot it it does it's like the audio drivers don't load right or something but I bet that it will be fixed in a future update this also has a 3 1/2 mm audio jack and in my testing I was initially using a pair of earbuds that had a microphone built into the line things sounded weird like parts were missing turns out that's because they were missing you cannot use headphones that have a built-in microphone for example I was playing Star Wars Rogue Squadron and I thought I remember there being more dialogue in this game well I was hearing some of the sound effects and music but none of the dialogue that's when I realized it only supports true stereo headphones so I'm going to put an affiliate link below in the description to an affordable pair of earbuds that you can put in the case and carry with you if you're interested the rgb3 runs off a quadcore RK 3566 CPU working alongside the Molly g52 GPU and 1 gig of lpddr 4 Ram this is a pretty common setup for these linux-based handhelds right now and that's part of why jell has such great out-of-the-box support this also has a 4,100 Milah battery that gets 8 hours of game time that's not entirely accurate I'm sure if you just played Atari 2600 games all day with the screen dimmed and the Wi-Fi off sure maybe you could get 8 hours but I don't think many people are going to do that they're going to play a variety of games I did a battery test using Perfect Dark from the N64 I felt like this would give us a more realistic estimate it's not the most difficult ROM to run but there is a reflective floor in this scene and some lighting effects going on it's a good upper mid game to push it a little but not blow it up in my test at 80% brightness with the Wi-Fi on it took 2 hours and 35 minutes to drain the battery from 100% to 20% so you should be able to get 3 hours out of 3D games on here and probably 4 to 5 hours if you're playing a mixture of games across the board I would not buy this expecting to get 8 hours but 4 to 5 hours isn't bad I think that's perfectly respectable no one needs to be playing that long anyway go outside and touch some grass go for a walk with a friend get some face-to-face interaction with a person it'll be good for you controls are where things get a little disappointing for me they're not bad they're really not they're just not excellent they need a little Grace the d-pad and faceb buttons are too soft the start and select buttons are too loud the shoulder buttons are too high and the joysticks are too short that's it in a nutshell we have these joy-con style sticks again in fact they are built exactly the same you could drop in joy-con sticks for a one toone replacement here let me know in the comments if you'd like to see a tear down video on how to do that because I'm thinking about replacing them with hall effect sticks anyway since this has basically become part of my everyday carry the d-pad and face buttons could also be improved by simply using a thicker silicone membrane and I think I'm going to change that out too from an ergonomic standpoint I wish the shoulder buttons were on the back as much as I love the 1ex one display it makes the device tall enough that the shoulder buttons are a little awkward to use and it would make the whole unit more comfortable to hold if they were lowered and placed on the back of the device right around here again controls aren't terrible I just know they could be better but over time I have gotten a little more used to them and I still really enjoy playing on this device so it's not the end of the world but this is a review and I have to be honest about what could be improved all in all I think this is a huge step forward and in the right direction for pal Kitty and I hope to see them take more steps toward excellence in future releases I always try to test out pocketability with these devices and I'm happy to report that this is technically pocketable and while I wouldn't want it on me all day or in my pocket on a hike or something it will fit comfortably enough for a trip to the grocery store to pick up some fresh apples or whatever science break did you know that an apple a day has been proven to reduce bad cholesterol by up to 20 points wake you up in the morning as much as a cup of coffee and reduce your risk of cancer an apple a day truly does keep the doctor away anyway how's the performance on this thing Bo I'm so glad you asked trog door 64 as expected everything 32bit and lower performs excellently here no problems whatsoever you can play GBA Super Nintendo Atari Sega Genesis all of that stuff to your heart's content after that it becomes a little more hit or miss I still think we're 6 months to a year away from a sub1 device that can play everything up to Dreamcast and PSP flawlessly but for $90 the rgb3 is doing a pretty awesome job I would say 34 of the Nintendo 64 and Dreamcast libraries are playable and some of them are even Flawless PSP and Nintendo d s also run a great portion of their libraries but PSP doesn't take great advantage of this screen because the games are 16x9 and it's just going to look a little small compared to the other systems and any DS game that requires touchscreen functionality for gameplay will basically be unplayable here because the display is not touch enabled but at the same time I can play Mario Kart DS on here and have a blast or Final Fantasy 7 Crisis Core which has some pre-rendered cutscenes that still look amazing to this day and that's really awesome I also wanted to point out that I purchased my unit from Amazon on sale for $95 pal Kitty has it on their site for 90 but my Amazon listing came with a hard shell case that the rgb3 fits in perfectly and I love it it's really nice you can see it in the unboxing video I did earlier I didn't have to guess and hope for the best when ordering a random hard drive case online and I can literally throw this in my backpack and take it with me anywhere without worrying about it getting broken I honestly can't recommend this thing enough I'll have an affiliate link below and using it will help support the channel at no additional cost to you so thank you for using those links it really helps out and keeps the channel going this is definitely turning out to be one of my longer videos if you've made it this far I'm assuming you've enjoyed it I would love for you to continue that enjoyment by clicking subscribe and becoming a part of the Bonos Gaming Community I'm hoping to get monetized by the end of this year but I can't do it without viewers like you I also love to hear from you in the comments what do you think about the rgb3 did you know it also comes in black purple yellow red and green do you have any questions about it let me know down below stay kind and encouraging out there and as always I'll catch you on the flippity [Music] flip
