time to say goodbye to cape breton island because we're going to say hello to a new island we are heading to prince edward island and we've never been there before we're taking another ferry on our last episode we showed you the beauty of the cabot trail one of the most scenic drives in the world and took you on a trip back in time and underground as we explored what makes cape breton island so special and today we're setting sail to one of the most sought after destinations in the maritimes from incredible food to quaint seaside towns magnificent architecture to famous red sand cliffs and beaches come along as we explore prince edward island we're howard and caitlin new state dog people food people adventure people we've been living on the road for the past four years traveling through north america and beyond each week we bring you along with us to show you how to live like a local in every new state or country we visit [Music] so this very trip is a little bit different from the cat fairy because we actually get to stay hooked up and connected because this is a drive on drive off unlike the cat this ferry also runs very frequently in fact we got here so early we're actually taking an earlier one and it doesn't seem like you even need a reservation you can just show up if they have room they'll get you on okay thank you [Music] super quick and easy process to load like it just goes so fast we weren't even out of the rv yet and they blew the horn that we were taking off like that's how efficient they are like right on time it blows my mind yeah it seems like the lower level are for like rvs and trucks like semis and all that and then the upper levels for cars and they just load them all at the same time this is a great little ride and the fact that you can have the dogs on the decks you can't have them inside but you can have them on the decks we've been walking around and i think it's also calling caitlyn to have at least one dog with her yeah piper and ella have each other and so scout gets to hang out with us which is nice she was a little scared on the first ferry and so this just makes me feel a little bit better about the whole thing there's so many dogs here on board which is really fun too just seeing like all the owners with their dogs and it's a beautiful day like when the weather is nice this is ideal to be outside and i can't explain it but somehow we have perfect lte on board and inside there are several different lounges there's also a cafe there's charging stations there's even work stations so if you do need to get a little bit of work done they have proper desks this trip is much faster than the cat ferry that we took a couple of weeks ago this is only about 75 minutes from nova scotia over to pti [Music] is even a tractor trailer yeah well we got to prince edward island early as we mentioned we were able to hop on the earlier ferry and so we got all set up at our harvest house for the night which is a brewery right here in montague and so this is kind of like bonus time for us we hadn't really planned on exploring today so there's a visitor center like in our backyard so we're gonna go check that out and see what we can see here in town and the couple of people that we did talk to in the area said that we have to go check out the two breweries in town we're obviously staying at one so we decided we're gonna do like a little mini pub crawl well that was delicious first stop complete yeah it was really good i liked everything i got i opted for a flight per usual and i had my first hand pie that is a thing that's local here to pei and it's just super cool i'm all about it's kind of like an empanada stuffed with pie filling so in my case i got a chicken pot pie but you can also get at this location barbecue pork and things like that now they're all made by this one company on the island and everybody loves them and we wouldn't have known about that had we not been reading our little books on the way over and we saw it on the menu we're like oh my gosh they have the hand pies that you just read about you guys always ask us like how do we find these things we just read we read we ask those rules it's true yeah we we read a lot uh you know like we go into the visit i love visitor centers because they always have really nice guides and we go in we ask questions we ask the locals locals will tell you what their favorite places are and you can have a great time just off of local recommendations yeah and then howard was in there like marking things with the pens so we have like a whole plan for this week now because of these handy-dandy guides all right are you ready for stop number two two thank you so much have a good one you too thank you that was a cute little artisan's market and i got a dog toy for the pups and some local honey for me well i call this a win-win win we have leftovers we had delicious drinks and we get to walk home we'll be home in like 15 seconds [Music] okay we're all checked in at the twin shores campground they have a whole newspaper with a campground so this campground has tons of activities it's a huge campground in a good way there are many different sites to choose from if you want to have a wooded site you can have that if you don't want overlooking the bay or the ocean or you know there's just all these different options as well as unique cabins there's the rustic cabins which i got to look inside one of them it is so cool on the inside we're heading over to the beach right now because one of the activities that they have is a professional sand sandcastle builder teaches you how to build fancy sandcastles how cool is that as long as you've got water on top you should make good mixture see how you can shape and then what i want to do is build this up so what i'll do is make a little flat area to build on so it's like lego and then just keep going like this side and slide it's a wetter sand better stand side to side and you just have three tools that are really good very important he makes it look so easy and it's just awesome too because he's just self-taught like he started doing this 12 years ago and he's that good it's incredible okay i've already started making my base here [Applause] caitlyn that's a great base that's so beautiful yes keep going you want me to help no i got it i'll hide you really good right no higher yeah keep it going caitlyn we want to we want a a real nice castle i'm making a tiny home we live in a tiny home it's going to be a tiny cat water remember splash it don't dump it flat all right here we go ready yeah oh it's very aggressive that's very good look at that just pour it on top right yeah good must be like mud oh it's getting there oh yeah i did it that's it we're done oh i think i'm leaning yeah you think now that is not bad i would say for our first job in the sand construction business that's pretty good so you guys want to see ours is the big reveal you want to give the tour oh absolutely go ahead these are the steps and then this is our wall uh this is the house uh this is a good tower in there not bad not bad for our first time yeah we have some practices to do but we learned some very important skills things that i didn't know about sam like the wetter the better and how to shape it and everything very cool [Music] this is beautiful well welcome to the bottle houses of pei this is actually our second canadian bottle house trip we visited uh the reddit bottle houses in western ontario last summer yeah near lake of the woods uh-huh this is on a completely different level i have to say those were really like a series of much smaller structures whereas these are like full-sized homes that are completely constructed from bottles yeah this one is the chapel and it was the last one that he built before he passed away and there are i think over 8 000 bottles in this one unbelievable yeah wow this is a big house so the sixth gable house is built with 12 000 bottles the famous bottle houses of pei were constructed by edward arsenal he dreamed up the idea in 1979 after receiving a postcard from his daughter that featured a glass bottle castle on vancouver island that summer he started collecting and cleaning the bottles and the following spring at the age of 66 he began building and another year after that the first bottle house was open to the public over the next few years he cemented more than 25 000 bottles together to form three fantasy-like structures there's a replica of the cape egmont lighthouse here because edward was actually the last resident keeper of the lighthouse how about that today the grounds also feature beautiful manicured gardens and a gift shop it's definitely worth the 10 admission fee to stroll through and see these breathtaking works of art [Music] pei is believed to have the highest concentration of lighthouses in north america there are 61 here on the island and on average you can find one every 34ish miles we drove about an hour west to visit the tallest and one of the most iconic the west point lighthouse it was built in 1875 the walls are 44 inches thick and were filled with cement to protect the structure from the gale force winds here today it's also operated as a hotel and you can pay a small admission fee to visit the museum and make the climb to the top of the 69 foot tall structure summerside has this really cute waterfront area called spinnaker's landing there's shops and restaurants we had a great meal at the deck house which has a deck outside overlooking the water it's a great place to grab a bite to eat a delicious burger oh my gosh they make homemade their sauces so the tartar sauce is made in-house and it is delicious the dressing on the salad was a homemade strawberry vinaigrette that was delicious i somehow ended up getting all over myself because it was that good this is just a cute little area to come walk around grab a bite go do some shopping howard what'd you get oh you're ready to see my uh souvenir canada not canada eh this is great i'm gonna wear this all the time howard's new favorite shirt okay well you know me and i am always seeking out the best sweets ice cream cakes and doughnuts we were recommended by many people multiple times to check out holmen's ice cream supposedly they have over a hundred different flavors that they rotate through and everything is made with local ingredients including local milk okay nobody told us about the garden that's at the ice cream parlor yeah it's huge and beautiful this is the whole experience i feel like okay it's really good ice cream but look it looks like spaghetti see it's got white chocolate sauce on it and then also fresh made strawberry sauce and then a freroche on top and i got a sampler many different flavors they have something too called the pei bucket list and you can get one scoop of every flavor that they have for 20 bucks that definitely crossed my mind until howard saw the spaghetti on the menu it was like i'm getting that this is so cool sorry i'm a little busy right now see my spaghetti ice cream i've never had so much vanilla ice cream spaghetti in my life that was delicious every single flavor i had the vanilla included was phenomenal i was like panic ordering because i got so many different flavors and one of mine had like these chunks of cake different like flavored cakes in it and it was so good such a beautiful environment too that the house itself is a very historic home and you can walk around and there's seating all throughout the home so you can enjoy your delicious ice cream there was even a wedding here back in 2018 it was two members of a band were on tour and they eloped and so there is a cartoon drawing depicting the wedding that happened where they like ordered their ice cream and then said i do sounds like pretty great wedding to me so one of the things that pei is famous for are the red cliffs and the red sand and so we have found one of those places yeah this is a provincial park and this entire coast area here is called the red sands shore and i think you will see why wow the water's super shallow right now so there's people like way out on these sandbars oh this is beautiful wow so you might be wondering if the water is freezing cold and another really interesting thing about prince edward island and this coast particular is that the water is really mild it's not cold at all would you agree yeah it was very comfortable we can hurry between the clouds maybe we can actually see victoria yeah we sit on the car for about 30 minutes so this massive rainstorm passed so that we could show you victoria by the sea the quaint fishing village of victoria played an important role in pei's early development thanks to its warm waters and tucked away waterfront it became the third largest seaport on the island in the 1800s large shipments of produce like potatoes and eggs were exported on schooners with the development of steamboats in the 1900s it became more of a tourist destination dropping off visitors looking to spend a few days on the coast today you'll find a few shops restaurants boutique hotels and an active wharf where you can see fishermen bringing in their catch of the day talking about being in the right place at the right time we walked into the lighthouse and the man with the key who happened to be on the city council before asked if he could take our photo and then said if you want to go inside i can let you in he gave us so much information about the lighthouse and the restoration process which has been fascinating this is uh when you would extinguish the light in the morning and this is when you would light it in the evening and as you can see the time changes because the sun gets up earlier all right go on up [Music] very cool our thanks to ben uh former council member and current key master of the lighthouse ben shared a story with us that apparently a writer came to town and penned an article which is now being reposted i guess uh in boston and ben is the only person named in the entire town so ben is the only famous person apparently in victoria by the sea and we got to meet ben i know and he's so sweet and the article apparently talked about how victoria by the sea must be on your bucket list because of how charming it is and the things that you can see and do here and ben was featuring that he's lived here for 40 years so he's very passionate about it and he knows this town extremely well and we're glad we got to meet him thanks ben [Music] while we were waiting for our table uh we were walking around the docks and lobster season actually ended today here i didn't realize it was such a short season they have basically 55-ish days he said to make their fortune for the year yeah you don't fish on sunday and you don't fish when the weather's really bad so he said it was a pretty good season it's very interesting because it seems like lobstering here is vastly different from what we just experienced in maine so it's just interesting to see the different malls the different techniques fascinating yeah we just saw earlier a 10 pound lobster hey lynn have you ever seen a lobster i mean we thought the one in cape breton island was big and that was a seven i mean this one when he held it up like i it's just it's hard because the claws are bigger than my hand and seeing it on camera i'm sure this doesn't even do it justice to seeing it in person it is massive and i didn't even like understand or comprehend that they could really get that big huge lobster that was a delicious dining experience some of the best oysters i've ever eaten in my life they're so beautiful absolutely incredible and all of them came from just outside the door yeah every day like that's amazing it's extremely fresh so delicious you have to get the mussels i mean famous pei mussels oysters the seafood chowder was good seafood seafood people this island is known for seafood and this will not be the last seafood that we're going to have over here i would give you the advice that if you can try and make a reservation um because even this early in the season they already had a weight yeah and they were nice enough to squeeze this in thank you both so much for doing that the staff here was incredible as well we had just a wonderful experience we would highly recommend the malpeque oyster barn what an incredibly beautiful and meticulously thought out property this is our 39th season peter jansen's is the owner it all started with his pottery back in 1983 when he first opened it's expanded over the years 1994 he added a restaurant and the gardens kept expanding and then 2004 he added our link and annex building which has the balinese arts and craft peter and his partner nash have turned the dunes into a sensory experience combining peter's impressive pottery and nash's beautiful balinese fashion line into a shopping experience like no other as you stroll through the beautifully designed building you'll find one-of-a-kind pieces brought over from indonesia so peter's actually had a home in bali for 40 plus years and finally just 2004 was like i'm gonna bring that into pei and to my dunes this here for example is a piece um the medium they use is feathers so peter found this artist maybe five years ago and every season is able to bring in a few pieces of that oh my gosh like once you actually like look let your eye adjust yep that is incredible the gardens we have three gardeners back there that work full-time and it just keeps growing over the years and it's amazing it's so peaceful so you can go back there with a glass of wine bring a book and just relax what was it like 11 years ago when you started oh it was a little smaller but not much but it definitely has grown and just established itself even more over the past few years it's absolutely spectacular from inside and out and getting to experience the dining the art and the gardens is a must if you're here on pai yeah you could spend a good amount of time here it's an entire experience like you're not just coming for a meal or you're not just coming to look at art like the entire thing combined is wonderful chef norman day he was actually invited to bali and thailand for some time back in 2015 and he got to go to a school in thailand and learn the thai recipes and skills and incorporate that into our menu that you see here they don't use deep fryers there's no french fries here nothing's fried a lot of vegetables and herbs come from our gardens there's even edible flowers that they use in the displays they're beautiful it is evident throughout that they're taking you on a culinary and artistic journey they have invested so heavily into their employees and their staff here and it just sounds like it's one big family and with how long ashley has been here for example and she even says herself like it's because of peter and nash like the property is beautiful the art's beautiful but it's because of them and how they treat everybody that she's been here so long and i think that speaks volumes it's just so cool peter had this amazing dream and he's definitely tries to just make it better and better every year especially the experience for the people that come here just making it a one-of-a-kind place on pei and even in canada our time on prince edward island was limited but we had to make a visit to the capital city of charlottetown where historical elements intertwine with modern touches to give the city a super fun vibe a visit to the waterfront and a stroll down victoria row are a must founders food hall was a new state favorite with their eclectic mix of shops and restaurants i got a little souvenir uh it's just a really like fun atmosphere they were having live music i think they do that every friday in the summer and they have something for everybody the mexican food we had was excellent and don't forget to visit cows for some delicious homemade and pei famous ice cream apple crisp really tastes like apple crisp and then a chocolate mint because i wanted something weird and then something traditional [Music] we got one more ferry ride to take and then our adventure mpi will be over i know it's bittersweet but the journey isn't over yet because this is part of the journey it's so much fun and before we knew it we were back in nova scotia and on our way to new brunswick where our canadian adventures continue next week come along as we try to solve the mystery of magnetic hill and experience the world famous tides of the bay of fundy thanks so much for watching we'll see you next week
