영국으로 돌아와 학위를 끝내면 have about a TOPIK level 6, I think.

한국에는 왜 오신 건가요? I used to be bullied for listening to K-pop
저는 예전에 K-pop을 듣다가 괴롭힘을 당한 적이 있어요 because I started, like, 10 years ago before the hype started.
왜냐하면 10년 전, 지금처럼 대중화가 되기 전부터 듣기 시작했거든요. And then after I finished Gymnasium (prep school) in my gap year,
그러다 고등학교를 마치고 I came here to do a language course,
어학연수를 하러 한국에 왔었는데, and I just fell in love with the food, the culture, the language, everything.
그때 음식, 문화, 언어에 반해버렸죠 So that was your first time coming here?
그때 한국에 처음 왔던 건가요? Yes.
네. And now this is your second time?
이번이 두 번째고요? No.

오 How many times have you been here?
몇 번이나 오셨어요? This is the sixth time.
이번이 여섯 번째에요. That's why I'm broke all the time.
그래서 항상 돈이 없어요. You said you were bullied for liking K-pop.
K-pop을 좋아해서 괴롭힘을 당했다고 하셨죠 Yeah.
네 What does that mean exactly?
왜 그랬던 거예요? Like K-pop is like a bright package of a lot of colors,
K-pop은 다양한 색상, 안무, 그리고 의상 등이 and like choreography, and like the outfits and everything.
하나로 합쳐진 밝은 패키지 같은데, And especially 10 years ago, they looked very different than...
특히 10년 전에는 지금이랑 많이 달랐어요. Now, they're very polished, like, even the new groups,
지금은 이제 막 데뷔한 그룹들도 they look very fancy already.
이미 아주 완벽해 보이지만, But back then they had like a different style, which I personally really like.
예전에는 스타일이 좀 달랐죠. 개인적으로 저는 그때 스타일을 정말 좋아했거든요 But I think if people are not familiar with that, it looks really weird to them.
하지만 그거에 익숙하지 않은 사람들은 이상하다고 생각했어요. They would just call me weirdo-
저를 ’괴짜’라고 부르기도 했고 or like in Switzerland, there's like a lot of stigma also
또 스위스에서는 만화나 for people who watch mangas, or like animes,
애니메이션을 보는 사람들에게도 편견이 많거든요 like the Japanese...
그런 일본의.. Just a nerd, right?
너드라고 생각하죠? Yeah. So they were like, "Oh yes, she must be one of them."
맞아요 그래서 ‘쟤 완전 찐따야’ 라던가 Or like just a lot of racist comments like,
인종차별적인 말도 많이 들었어요. "Oh, are you listening to this Chinese music again?" stuff like that.
"또 중국 음악 듣고 있냐?" 같은 식의 말들이요 Wow.
와 Yeah.

정말 나빴네요 Yes, it was very annoying.
네, 정말 짜증났어요 I was here last summer, and I really love it so I came back.
저는 작년 여름에 한국에 왔을 때 정말 좋았어서 또 오게 됐어요 And I love the food, the culture's interesting,

한국에는 어떤 이유로 오게 되셨나요? Maybe four years ago, I met my girlfriend, current girlfriend, in Australia.
4년 전쯤에 오스트레일리아에서 지금의 여자친구를 만났어요. And the reason I met her was
어떻게 만나게 되었냐면 I was watching K-drama at the time on Netflix,
그때 당시에 제가 넷플릭스에서 K-드라마를 많이 봤는데, and just randomly the recommendation came up.
추천 목록에 뜬 드라마가 있었거든요 I think it was Kim Bi-seo. It's like "Secretary Kim," was the K-drama.
김비서였던 것 같은데, '김비서가 왜 그럴까'라는 K-드라마였어요 And I just so interested, just randomly,
그걸 아주 재미있게 보다가 정말 갑자기 and then I was like, "Oh, I sort of wanna learn this language."
한국어를 한 번 배워보고 싶다는 생각이 들었어요. 'Cause I was just watching a lot of K-drama,
제가 그때 K-드라마를 정말 많이 봤거든요, maybe, you know, it's kind of addictive.
약간 중독된 것처럼요 So then, yeah, I was looking for a Korean teacher,
그래서 한국어 선생님을 구하게 됐는데, and my Korean teacher was my now girlfriend, now fiance.
그때 선생님이 지금은 제 여자친구이자 약혼녀가 됐어요 Wow. Good.
와 멋지네요 So, yeah, that's why I wanna come to Korea to learn more Korean.
그래서 한국어를 더 배우기 위해 한국에 오게 됐죠. So I'm going to, like, Yonsei University
지금은 연세대학교를 다니고 있는데 Nice.

미국에서 왔어요. Why'd you come to Korea?
한국에 왜 오게 되셨나요? I wanted to study Korean culture and Korean language,
한국 문화와 언어를 공부하고 싶어서요, and I love K-pop and K-dramas.
제가 K-pop이랑 K-drama를 정말 좋아하거든요 So, I really wanted to learn Korean, so I came here to study.
그래서 한국어를 배우고 싶어서 여기 와서 공부하게 됐어요 Nice.
멋지네요 So, in the US, you're just hanging out, listening to Korean music,
그래서 미국에서 한국 음악도 듣고, watching Korean dramas and movies,

네, 맞아요 I also visited Korea in 2022 after I graduated,
졸업 후 2022년에 한 번 한국을 방문했다가 and I fell in love with the country and I was like, "I wanna go back here."
완전히 반해버렸어요. 한국에 또 오고 싶어서 So I found the program to study Korean language.
한국어를 공부할 수 있는 어학연수 프로그램을 찾아봤죠 And while studying, you can live in Korea
실제로 한국에 와서 공부하면서 so you get exposed to Korean culture and life,
한국 문화와 생활에 많이 노출되고 and you can learn Korean even better.
한국어를 더 잘 배울 수 있게요 Nice.
좋네요 So that's what I did.
네, 그렇게 오게 됐어요 So why is learning to speak Korean well so important.
한국어를 잘 말하는 게 왜 그렇게 중요해요? So important.

왜요? Like even now, my speaking is so bad,
지금도 저는 스피킹을 정말 못하지만 and I realized the importance of being able to speak Korean here,
한국에서 한국어를 잘하는 게 얼마나 중요한지를 깨달았거든요 because everywhere, you need to be at least at a certain level
한국에서는 어디서든 적어도 어느 정도의 to be able to like, get hired or like get jobs,
스피킹 수준이 되어야 취업하거나 or even like opportunities to even work here.
다른 일을 할 수 있는 기회를 잡을 수 있어요 Yeah.
그렇죠 You wanna work here and live here?
한국에서 일하면서 살고 싶은 거예요? Mm-hmm. Yeah. I love this place.
네, 저는 한국이 너무 좋아요 You love this place?

한국의 모든 것이 다요 Yeah. Why? What do you love?
네, 왜요? 어떤 점이 좋은가요? Like, the culture here.
한국의 문화요 Like, I hear a lot of different opinions from, like, many people after I came here.
제가 한국에 오고 나서 많은 사람들로부터 여러 가지 의견을 듣긴 했지만 But what I saw for myself is a bit different from what people have been saying.
제가 직접 보고 느낀 거랑 사람들이 말하는 게 조금 다른 것 같아요 So I feel like even just now, when I was walking, like, out from school,
아까도 방금 학교에서 나오는 길에 I saw, like, many banners where people put up to say, like,
졸업한 친구들을 위해 “축하해"라고 쓰인 "Oh, congratulations" to this person and that person.
배너들이 걸려있는 걸 많이 봤는데 And I don't think we have that in Singapore.
싱가포르에는 그런 게 없거든요 They decorate and, like, created a... oh, like this.
한국은 그런 장식을 하고 뭔가를 만들어내고... 아, 이런 식으로요 Like, you can just put banners anywhere and it's fine.
이렇게 배너를 어디든지 달아놓을 수 있잖아요 And I feel like it's such a good place to like,
한국은 이런 식으로 자유로운 표현과 have like free expression and like be creative
창의력을 표현하기에 정말 좋은 곳 같아요 and I think that Korea is very, like, artistic, and creative, and fun.
저는 한국이 아주 예술적이고 창의적이기도 하고 재밌는 것 같아요 What are you getting here that you're not getting in Singapore?
한국에서는 누릴 수 있는데 싱가포르에는 없는 게 있어요? This.
이거요 This thing.
이런 거요 Like, I feel like in Singapore we're very rigid.
싱가포르는 예술에 좀 보수적인 것 같아요 You don't really get to like put your work up there or like do fun things.
본인의 작업을 전시하거나 재미있는 일을 할 수 있는 기회가 많지 않죠 I mean, we can, but like it'll be taken down.
할 수 있기는 하지만, 제지당할 거예요 But like here, you can openly put it up.
하지만 한국에서는 자유롭게 전시할 수 있으니까 So it's like interesting like....
그런 게 마음에 들어요 My image of Singapore is like very open, advanced, very expensive-
저한테 싱가포르는 아주 열려있고, 발전되어 있고, 아주 비싸고, very intelligent people- very, you know, cutting-edge technology-
사람들도 엄청 똑똑하고, 최첨단 기술이 있다는 이미지인데 which is surprising to hear you say it's a bit more conservative.
조금 보수적인 곳이라고 하셔서 놀라워요 But for the art side there are many rules that we have to follow in Singapore.
예술에 관해서는 싱가포르에서 따라야 할 규칙들이 많아요 Like even the art side, it's a really small community,
예술 분야의 커뮤니티는 정말 작기 때문에 so you don't really get to, like, do anything that you want.

이제 한 학기 끝났어요 There are many phrases that you can catch from K dramas or K pop
K 드라마나 K 팝에서 많은 표현들을 배울 수 있어요. It's easy to catch like "뭐라고?!" ( What did you say? ) from the K dramas
K 드라마에서는 ‘뭐라고?’라는 말을 자주 들을 수 있죠 미쳤어? ( Are you crazy?! )
‘미쳤어?’ 이것도요 Nice, nice
잘하네요 Like just basic ones like 미안해요, 고마워요 ( Sorry, Thank you )
아주 기본적인 것들이요. ‘미안해요’, ‘고마워요’ and like other stuff like that
같은 표현들이요 But most of them are used in a casual way so ( in the dramas )
하지만 대부분은 캐주얼한 상황에서 쓰는 말이라 It's not really good for ... ( speaking with people )
그렇게 좋진 않아요. bad habits

와, 정말 멋지네요 I think living in Korea's a lot more comfortable than living in England.
한국에서 사는 게 영국에서 사는 것보다 훨씬 편하기도 하고요 and safer and cheaper in certain aspects.
어떤 면에서는 더 안전하고 물가도 싸니까요 So I definitely-
그래서 확실히- Where in England?
영국 어디에서 오셨는데요? So I'm from the south in Bristol,
남부 브리스틀에서 왔어요. so it's one of the big cities so it's quite expensive.
큰 도시 중 하나라서 꽤 비싼 편이에요 So being able to eat out here is quite nice 'cause it's a lot cheaper.
그래서 한국은 물가가 훨씬 싸니까 외식을 할 수 있어서 좋아요 True.
그렇겠네요 I don't think I would stay in Korea long-term, to be honest,
솔직히 한국에서 오래 살고 싶지는 않아요 because like the work environment
왜냐하면 일하는 환경이나 and a lot of like political and social issues
정치적, 사회적인 면들을 고려해 봤을 때 that I think are a bit better in Switzerland, for example,
스위스가 조금 더 나아 보인다고 생각하거든요, 예를 들어, or of course other countries.
물론 다른 나라들도요 I do plan to spend a few years but not forever.
몇 년 정도는 한국에서 보낼 계획이지만 영원히는 아니에요 Honestly, I love living in Korea 'cause it's so... everything is [comfortable]
솔직히, 한국에서 사는 게 정말 좋아요. 왜냐하면 Everything is 편해 It's really convenient.

한국은 정말 사랑스러운 곳이에요. All the food is so delicious, obviously.
음식이 정말 맛있는 건 물론이고, And all the people I've met are very friendly.
제가 만났던 사람들 모두 정말 친절했어요. So it's worth coming. Yeah.
올만한 가치가 있다고 생각해요, 네 Do you think you wanna be in Korea for a long time?
한국에 장기적으로 머물고 싶나요? I'm not sure.
잘 모르겠어요 I am going to finish my bachelor degree in like four years,
한국에서 4년 동안 지내면서 학사 학위를 마치고 and although I have some plans of like staying here and getting work maybe,
일을 구해서 당분간 머물 계획은 있지만, I really don't see myself living for like a really long time here.
아주 오랫동안 사는 건 좀 상상하기 어려워요 Why is that?

솔직하게요 the culture sometimes can be harsh for foreigners.
한국 문화는 가끔 외국인들에게 힘들 때가 있어요. It doesn't mean it's bad at all.
나쁘다는 건 절대 아니고 But it has some things that I just cannot, like, ignore,
원래 살아오던 문화와 너무 다르기 때문에 since my culture is very different.
쉽게 무시할 수 없는 점들이 있는 거죠 Kissing?
키스 인사법 같은 거요? You can do that in Chile?
칠레에서는 그렇게 하나요? It's a thing in my country.
칠레에서는 그렇게 해요 Like, the vibe of the whole place.
그런데 전체 분위기 같은 거 말이에요. I like that my culture is like very warm with people,
칠레에서는 사람들끼리 아주 따뜻하게 대하는 걸 좋아하는데 and since I cannot find that much here,
한국에서는 그런 느낌을 많이 못 받아서 I don't see myself living for a long time.
오랜 시간 동안 사는 건 좀 어려울 것 같다고 생각해요 But that doesn't mean it's a bad place for a living.
하지만 그게 한국이 살기 안 좋은 곳이라는 뜻은 아니에요. it's just not your style. It doesn't mean it's bad.
그냥 본인이 원하는 스타일이 아닐 뿐이지 나쁜 곳이라는 뜻은 아니니까요 Yeah, you're okay to say that.
맞지 않는 점을 말해도 괜찮아요 Mm-hmm. Yeah.
네 Anything that shocked you when you got here?
한국에 와서 충격받았던 적이 있었나요? Many things.
많았어요 Many things shocked me.
정말 충격적이었던 것들이 많았어요 The hills here, like, so many like hills.
여기 언덕들이요, 경사로가 너무 많아요. Like, the first year I came here and I had two luggage on my hand,
처음 한국에 왔을 때, 손에 두 개의 캐리어를 끌면서 and I had to climb up a huge hill, and go down another hill,
큰 언덕을 오르고, 다른 언덕을 내려가고, and go up another hill, and go down another hill.
또 다른 언덕을 오르고, 또 내려가고 했어요. I'm like, no. Like, it's crazy.
저는 ‘이건 아니야, 정말 미쳤어’ 했죠 And they don't have lifts in the apartments.
그리고 아파트에 엘리베이터가 없어요. Like, you have to climb up the stairs like that.
계단을 저렇게 많이 올라가야 하는데 That's shocking to me as well.
그것도 저한테는 충격이었어요 The older buildings, yeah
