so me and grady having a nice romantic walk down the beach we're not quite holding hands yet we're not at that stage in our relationship but we're cruising down the beach having a good old time on the deserted island all right let's go for a walk then what about all this condom [Music] off the coast of cambodia the south china sea is peppered with hundreds of uninhabited islands many of which have never been explored by man and all of which would spell certain death for anyone left stranded and unprepared on one of these tiny specks of land between 2008 and 2012 over 5 000 people have been lost at sea some of these souls were found but others were never heard from again in this scenario josh and grady wash up on the shores of a deserted cambodian island with only their knives and the clothes on their backs i thought about being marooned on a desert island but more likely with my girlfriend than you look at all this crap there's crap everywhere i don't see crap i see a hardware store pretty much anything we need is washed up on this high tide line we could probably build a boat out of rubbish and just sail on out of here hey look left we got a boat over on the horizon right there see that [Music] it's probably not gonna be here that much longer really the only option we have is to use some of this trash on the beach get a big plume of smoke up and hopefully get rescued immediately condom all right that could possibly work it's not degraded too much there is a method you can do where you just take the condom and make a sphere out of it and use that as a lens look at this crap we've got glass bottles here plastic bottles old yogurt cuts bits out of a car plastic bags there's heaps of cool stuff here i don't even know what that is but i don't have time for that now what we are looking for is something useful that we can start a fire with oh here we go sweet that was a good score my mind's bouncing around a ton of fire making techniques that are pretty much all lens fires oh hell yes this is exactly what i've been looking for right here a big old light that's going to give me a whole lot larger lens still have the bowling horizon i think i've got what i need i just need to get this thing going there's a sweet spot very good i do notice that ship is gone with josh working on securing a source for water grady turns his focus to building signals for rescue if we only build one fire they might just think it's just somebody camping on an island i want to make sure i have three suitable fires built up because whether it's three taps three flashes of light or three fires patterns of threes are a universal signal for distress [Music] oh i've already got signal fire set up for signaling a boat so i'm putting most of my focus on a ground to air signal i've been seeing so many white buoys on the ground and instead of just using my buoys as a ground air signal water collection is all about surface area so if i just cut it straight down the side and start spelling out sos and i've got a lot better chance of getting water gonna need a whole lot more of these [Music] now the priority has shifted to replenishing calories lost from nearly 36 hours in the hot sun while josh heads off to gather food from the ocean grady works on a bow to hunt game in the forest got a bit of a competition going to see you can come back to camp with food i'm pretty sure it's going to be me josh scavenges the trash riddled coastline in hopes of finding materials he can use to harvest food from the ocean i think the easiest most effective way of gathering food is to use the ocean there's a estuary where the water's washed over creating a back water there's some small fish in there so i reckon what i'm gonna do use those smaller fish as bait to catch crabs and what i'm holding here is the hikarangi fish catcher looks suspiciously like a fishnet however it is not do a lot of spare fishing back home and one method we use to attract fish is to sit on the bottom and throw sand up into the air and it brings the fish in it seems to be working for these ones too which is a freshwater ocean fish and that's all we need we don't need any more than that so now it's a pretty simple equation put the fish into fishnet fill up one of those sacks with sand as a weight tie a bottle to the top this is going to be our marker bottle or our marker float so we know where the net is later on i'm just going to smash this up a bit so the oil's in the head disperse through the current one fresh stinky fish i'll make sure he's jammed in here good and proper so he doesn't just float out we're just gonna wait out turf it in we'll leave it there for a couple of hours go out and check it but we should catch a few in the next couple of hours uh just in time for maybe a delicious coconut crab soup with some shower fishing [Music] i hope josh can find something to eat in the ocean but i'm not one to let somebody do everything for me i want to pull my own weight if that means going to the jungle and sweating myself so be it up i got something right up ahead [Music] i don't know if it's a snake or a lizard but i'm gonna get it right up ahead on these rocks i've got a giant lizard it looks like an iguana i don't know the species but i'm gonna take it out i have no idea what josh is doing back there but i got my meat bringing home the table now that my crab net's out there i'm pretty confident it's going to be full of crabs i don't know how many crabs it could be one it could be tin there's crabs in the net that's great big ones green ones red ones pretty sure i'm going to win this competition hands down [Music] so the plan is to make a good old cambodian boil up you just chuck everything you've got into a pot and you cook it green bamboo is actually quite good for cooking so right now i'm making a couple of pots what i'm gonna make here is a delicious little crab tube i guess i'd call it so we're just gonna jam it all in here i don't know how i'm going to fit the crabs in there i might have to cut them in half pour little buggers and just stuff them in it's no falling ham [Music] it's going to be a pretty crunchy suit so what'd you get knocked this sucker straight off a rock not a ton of meat there especially not on this one but it's something my young son charlie is going to be pissed when he sees me eating this thing my two boys they've got peter guard and one's called jab jab i don't know what the other one's called but we're having jab jab for dinner my bamboo crab concoction turned out pretty good it smells delicious it's visually appealing bits of red crab scattered through the white coconut flesh wow that looks good meanwhile the old lizards are going to be slowly roasting on the traditional cambodian rotisserie to your cooking skills i think this little one's probably ready how about it cheers dainty [Laughter] it tastes as good but the meat's not there like greasy chicken it's not bad though there's no coconut still well without a doubt we've proven that we could survive here indefinitely haven't we having achieved fire shelter water and food by taking advantage of natural resources and exploiting the heaps of trash they found scattered on the shoreline josh and grady can now focus on bettering their position while they keep their eyes on the horizon to spot potential rescue by sea or air guys we got a boat gosh what there's no doubt about it this is the closest boat that we've seen the whole time we've been out here it's not sticking around we made torches to transfer the pilot fire into the signal fires the fastest way possible it's time for us to light them up and get the hell off this island that's it wow that one's cranking look at that one guy we need more black smoke chuck this on there you got that flag flank brian i'm putting out pretty good black now we're not just having a barbecue guys come on don't do this any good if they don't see it we'll just have to
