coming up on this episode i have compiled my top 20 best ikea hacks just for you i'm leaving in all of the shopping just so you can kind of experience my process but this is a compilation style video so sit back relax or maybe even craft right along with me but let's get started [Music] i know it's kind of a random thing to be looking at but i'm looking at the toilet paper holders here and i noticed this one now i ordered one off of amazon that looks almost identical i've got a hack already planned so i'm going to get this one for 2.99 because i love the price [Music] i'm definitely gonna do something with this little set of baskets super cute [Music] as per usual i have bought way more than i anticipated they just have such good prices and i just have a lot of fun here so i better get checking out here all right i feel really good about my purchases so now it's time to get back to my studio and start packing them [Music] all right so we're back from shopping and i am about to shame my scandinavian heritage by slaughtering these ikea names but we're gonna start out with this fun little find i actually decided to go hit up the as is clearance section on my way out the door but i have found this little jewel and it's called the skogsta stool and it was already assembled and ready to go and it looked like it was in pretty good shape and what i've got planned is i already had this piece it's going to be perfect to go along the edge of our stool seat and we are just going to attach that to the edge using some e6000 and some hot glue just for that instant stick and it's going to kind of dress that up a lot now when i start i don't actually glue it down at the beginning of the banding and that is because i want some flexibility when i get to the end to match it up in the most even possible manner i want to try to get the spacing of those faux nail heads as even as possible and to do this at the end i used a box cutter blade and some scissors to kind of match it up and it turned out pretty good i think [Music] on the bottom of the stool we also have these screw heads it just doesn't look very finished or polished and i want to disguise them so i have these push pins that you might recognize from another ikea hack episode i did and they kind of match this trim right so i'm going to take these outside and spray paint them in black and we are going to just hot glue these into place to cover up these screw heads and if we need to take our wire cutters to clip off the tip of it so it will fit in there good it should be fine it doesn't need to be structural it's totally decorative [Music] and that's it for this ikea hack it's amazing that just adding a little decorative trim and adding some little finishing details can make such an impact but it does whether it ends up in this bathroom makeover that i'm doing or not it will remain to be seen and i just really love how this turned out stick around just a little bit longer and i will show you all of these bathroom ikea hacks in the made over bathroom it's one of my favorite room makeovers i've ever done so just stick with me a few minutes longer this rug is 3.99 i really like this rug and i feel like it has so much potential to do quite a lot with it so we are going to just kind of judge this up it kind of already has this natural like tone on tone french stripe so i thought that we could kind of just enhance that a little bit by taking a little bit of paint and making it pop a little bit more we're gonna have a lot of blacks and creams and whites going on in this bathroom so i thought it would be really cool to add some french stripes to this because these natural stripes are so close together we're going to need to do one stripe at a time and i do this by taking some painters tape and taping on either side of the raised area pressing it down to the fabric and we're going to simply just take some black chalk paint and feel free to use whatever color of chalk paint matches your decor and paint the stripe allowing it to fully dry then we're going to peel back the painters tape [Music] and then we will just repeat the process and tape off the other stripe just exactly as we did before just on the other side following that natural stripe once that second stripe is dry we pull back the tape and this might be our easiest ikea hack of the day i absolutely love how our four dollar rug turned out it looks way more high-end than that now you can repeat this process on the other side in a different color or leave it natural but either way this rug is completely reversible so what do you think of this hack is it something you would try so for my next ikea hack and i forgot the name of these so now i don't have to slaughter it but i got these little soap dispensers they were 99 cents a piece it's a little boring to be honest with you all we're gonna do is just give it a little facelift by spraying in a matte black this will be perfect because i've got a lot of matte black features going into this bathroom makeover i did about three coats of matte black spray paint and after they dry we bring them inside and remove the tape i decide not to paint anything that would be inside the container because i didn't want to contaminate the soap and the lotion and i just didn't know how the paint would react i thought it was fine like this now i made a free printable and there will be a link for it in the description box below just follow the instructions there all you need to do is print it out on sticker paper i will link some waterproof sticker paper in the description box as well and then you just cut that out and then peel off the backing and stick them to your jar it's as simple as that when including the sticker paper and the paint you're looking at about 250 to three dollars for the pair and i think it looks so cute and will be such a nice touch on my brand new vanity that i will be installing in my bathroom such a simple hack but it makes all the difference what do you think so for our next ikea hack we are going to be using the skog's victim toilet paper holder i really want to make for my bathroom like a cell phone shelf i know you're all so stoked about that but i have this piece of scrap wood and i'm just going to take it and cut it down outside and then i just take my palm sander and give it a really good sand down making sure to focus on the edges to take down those corners so there's no sharp edges [Music] then i take it inside and coat the entire thing with an antiquing wax [Music] once that's dry and to even out the finish a little bit i just take a little bit of sandpaper and do a light [Music] sanding i got these brackets from homedepot.com i just ordered them online and had them shipped to my local store for free and they are actually meant to be decorative elements for like outdoor timberwork they were about three dollars and seventy cents each and now i'm going to just use them as shelf brackets but as you can see this hole is meant for really large screws well we don't need that much support for what we're doing so i went outside and i spray painted some screws and some washers that i had on hand it that way it will just cover up the hole and make it nice and tight now that they're dry we're going to take these washers and screws and attach our brackets to the shelf and i just use a speed square to make sure the brackets are lined up to the edge then i just pre-drill some holes to get the screws started but being careful not to drill all the way through then i take our washer and screw and securely fasten the brackets to the [Music] shelf now it's time to attach our ikea toilet paper holder and i put a roll of toilet paper on it just so i could kind of see how it was spaced and how it would work out now i just eyeballed this i really didn't measure but i looked at where it was and made sure it looked appropriate and then when i was happy i marked where my screws needed to go and pre-drilled those holes as well now i'm just gonna temporarily install this for display purposes but i will be removing this as this wall really needs to be painted and you can also see in the bottom right hand corner of the screen that there is also an existing toilet paper holder that is crazy far away from the toilet and i want you to think about how hilarious that is when you have kids and how are they going to reach the toilet paper just think about that for a second yeah i know you feel my pain anyways we mount it to the wall almost identically as we mounted it to the shelf bracket except for this time we you will want to use some drywall anchors so that it is nice and sturdy and you also want to make sure it's also level again this is just kind of a temporary solution for right now i'm not even sure if this is the exact location where i will leave it as i will be removing it to start my bathroom renovation now i am not one to talk bathroom talk trust me but tell me how handy is this little shelf going to be you know you all take your cell phones into the bathroom with you and then you're constantly wondering where you're gonna put it when it's that time in total i probably spent just over ten dollars and i think it's just awesome what do you think in my bathroom makeover i am going to be having some shelves and i thought it would look really cute to have some baskets with lids and i was so excited to find these ones at ikea but i thought we could dress them up just a little bit now what i was thinking on this one is something really simple i'm just going to take some buttons from my dollar tree button stash and we are going to sew them on with jute twine to create a button closure first i find out where i want to place it just kind of in the center near the bottom of the lid then i simply sew it on through the hole just one time using a large needle and then i knot it on the back and then for a little added security i put a little hot glue on the back as well but that's completely optional i repeat this process on the smaller basket with a smaller button [Music] then i decide i want to loosely attach it on the back by just doing a simple knot through the lid and the top of the basket so you can open it easily now this is optional but it does add a little extra security then we need a little loop for the button to fit into and i decided to use some wired jute for this but you can totally just use regular jute as well i just cut a loop of that and hot glued it into place [Music] then i repeated this all on the smaller one as well [Music] this is such a simple thing to do probably took less than five minutes and it elevated it just enough to give it a lot more personality and here's that promised peek at our bathroom ikea hacks in the newly renovated bathroom if you're interested in seeing this episode i will link it in the description box below but now it's time for some more ikea hacks [Music] i normally at this point would take you inside ikea we'd go shopping for some stuff but we're going to be doing something a little different this time we are going to be shopping my own house when we first purchased this home it was a vacation rental so it came fully furnished with a lot of ikea stuff we're going to be making some of those over today we are going to be making over the chimneys dresser that's in my master bedroom it's functioned really good for us but it's a little bit boring we're gonna just add a little bit of trim and paint and some new knobs and it will look so amazing i'm excited about this so we're gonna renovate this in place in my bedroom and i know that that seems crazy but i like to live life on the edge i don't really want to haul all the way downstairs to haul it all the way back up so i've got a couple of hacks of how we're going to keep this as neat and clean as possible because i don't want to make a mess of my bedroom so we're going to keep this as tidy as possible it's going to be fun so the first thing we're going to do is we are going to get the dimensions of all of our drawers this is 8 inches tall and it's 13 and a quarter wide and then the bottom ones are 27 and 3 8 and 8 inches tall and the very bottom drawers are a little bit taller than the middle ones at 10 and 3 4 inches those are the dimensions of the drawers and we need that because we're going to be adding trim and that's really what's gonna dress up this piece we're gonna be using primarily two trims and the first is this just kind of i think it's a half inch by three quarter inch flat piece of molding i picked this up at home depot and then i've got this kind of molding and we are going to layer that on the inside so that's the trim that we're going to be using we're going to cut it down to dimensions now these are just simple cuts so you could do these on a miter box since i have access to a miter saw it just makes life so much easier so we're going to just take them outside make all the cuts but before we make our cuts we need to remove all of the knobs and give the dresser a good cleaning [Music] so we can avoid a bazillion trips up and down the stairs we are going to make a lot of cuts and take it all up with us you could miter this if you wanted to just for ease and simplicity we are going to just do butt joints i think once we putty everything it will look great and we're going to do the width first and then we'll do the height so now that we have all of our outside wood cut we're going to just bust this out i'm going to be using my brad nailer and it's gonna just make very quick work of this so we're gonna start with the top piece because there's a little bit of a gap here and there's not on the other ones i'm gonna try to raise this just a touch we'll get the first corner on and then we can make sure it's level from there [Music] we'll only have to do this on the top row because we can line it up with the drawers beyond that so we are going to just place the trim on the top of all of the drawers first this is going to make sure that we have a good starting point to get nice tight joints you're going to want to make sure your pieces are level and all even with one another next we are going to nail in one of the side pieces and get it nice and secure up against that top piece then we are going to take a bottom piece and snug that right underneath that side piece and only stick in one nail on that side then we're going to go on the opposite side and put in our other side piece and get that nice and snug and then finally we're going to snug up that bottom piece and put a nail on that side and then you can add an additional nail or to where you think you need them after that now i did this different for years and i would do the top and bottom pieces and then i would do the side face pieces last and i don't know why i did this because i always ended up having frustration about them being too long too short and ultimately i ended up using a whole lot of putty to fill in the gaps and i wish that i had figured out this system a lot sooner because you end up with much tighter joints and needing a whole lot less putty and so it was just so frustrating before so i wish i had figured out this process sooner because it just really works well so i hope that that made sense to you and you can see what i'm doing well and i hope it saves you some headache going forward while we still will be using putty it will be just a whole lot less and also you can see how easy having a brad nailer makes this job no more smashed fingers no more tired arms and it takes a whole lot less time [Music] this next part is going to be pretty cool because we're going to be using miter shears so we don't even need to use a saw this stuff is thin enough it still has some decorative edges to it and i will just show you how we're going to do this so we're going to set it in here like so and cut it on a 45 degree angle see how easy that cuts through it like butter you can just kind of hold it up to here you can use a measuring tape if you want to okay let's see if we did a good job nice and then that will just add a little extra decorative edge and we'll just put that all the way around actually we can use this as a template and we'll just kind of assembly line it like we've been doing [Music] we can get a pattern for this one now perfect nice tight fit in there and then we just wrap the inside of the trim on each and every drawer and this really adds a nice finishing [Music] detail [Music] here's another close-up of me doing the inside of the drawer [Music] and here's what it looks like with all of the trim on the inside and this makes me so excited now i didn't want to leave the sides unfinished so i add a piece of trim to both the top and the bottom on both sides of the dresser can you believe these are just large paint sticks that i cut down to fit isn't that fun and then we trim it out like we did on the inside of our drawers with the same decorative trim [Music] then we fill in all of the seams and all of the nail holes with putty we let that dry [Music] and then we come back in and sand everything down with a sanding sponge making sure to also get the dark ikea finish scuffed up a bit as well and then we wipe everything down getting all of the dust and we are ready to paint and i promised you a lazy painting hack now the proper thing to do is to remove everything from your drawers maybe even pull out your drawers entirely but here's a little hack for you take some glad press and seal wrap and wrap it around your drawers and press it down really good into place i was still able to open and close my drawers as i needed and my clothes were protected and my husband's clothes were protected and we didn't get anything on them i promise i did this to all of my drawers and then since i am painting on carpet i wanted to lift up the legs a bit so that i took a couple of squares of wood and put them underneath the legs to prevent it from kind of from sinking down into the carpet and potentially ruining the paint job on the legs then i just took some painters paper and painters tape and taped everything off and that my friends is how you paint a dresser the absolutely laziest way possible and then once we had everything prepped we just primed everything and let it dry and then i added two coats of dorian gray paint which i had mixed at home depot but i do think it's a sherwin-williams color and i am just waiting for all of the comments to come in on this but i promise you i didn't get a single drop of paint on my carpet or my clothes everything worked out just fine after all the paint coats dried all i did was add some badgley mishka crystal knobs that i ordered off of amazon and i will provide a link for they are so gorgeous and sound super expensive but i promise they were only two dollars a knob and that's it i love how this turned out every time i look at it i smile i cannot believe that it is an ikea piece now pottery barn has a dresser that's very similar i believe it's around fifteen hundred dollars and it doesn't have the pretty crystal knobs so i kind of prefer our version i am just so happy and proud of how this turned out and the fun thing is is you can pick out any colors and have it match your decor perfectly this dresser has me so excited to do another bedroom makeover and kind of finally finish off this room to how i want it to be it turned out so good it's really lit a fire under me for our next ikea hack we are going to be using this ball and this cement pot i just love this cement pot it is so classy and we're gonna just combine this and make a topiary it's gonna be awesome but we're gonna change it up a little bit i found some french labels on pinterest and i converted them into a stencil that i made on my cricut machine i take some gray craft paint that i already had on hand and mix it in with this black chalkboard paint that i recently picked up from the dollar tree until i'm happy with the color then i carefully paint that on [Music] i allow it to fully dry and then i peel back the stencil [Music] isn't this so cute then i just shove in a whole bunch of floral foam that i have on hand and some random white foam i had as well and then i also place a wood dowel that was from a previous project that was already antiqued with some antiquing wax and i just placed that in the center and then i make sure it is tight with foam for some added security i also add a ton of hot glue around the dowel to hold it into place sorry for about the blurriness on my camera it decided to focus on the dowel and it just happened then i take some green moss sheets from the dollar tree and i cut that out to fit and hide our foam now to get the balls to slide down our dowel we need to cut holes through them which i do with a various array of cutting devices i couldn't decide which one to use just find anything that worked and i just pushed my first one down to a few inches above the pot line and then i repeated the process on our last decorative ball but this time i only cut one opening because we want the top part of that ball to sit on the top part of the dowel if that makes sense then we just slide that on now with them in place i take a drill and drill a little hole near the bottom of each ball to thread some wire through to kind of wire them into place and then for some added security you can always add some hot glue as well that gorilla hot glue is really strong this was honestly really easy to put together and it's so cute i love the colors i love the overall classy high-end feel that it has but what do you think so as a part of our home purchase we inherited a couple of these nightstands and as they are they're a little bit basic but i want to do just something super easy with them and so we are going to be taking these dollar tree ceiling tin tiles you can find in the kitchen section and we are going to put stickers on the nightstand i don't know how many times as a mom i have said stop putting stickers on your furniture and we're going to go ahead and break that roll right now and we are going to literally just line these up on the edge and they actually fit freakishly perfect and boom so you're going to need four stickers to stick on the fronts of the drawers [Music] honestly i think it kind of looks cool like this you could almost get away with this but we're going to design this to the nines and take it up a little bit extra and so we're going to take some of that same square trim from our dresser upgrade and trim out the outside of the drawer and then one piece for the middle to hide the seams and you can cut these out on a miter box but because i have the miter saw it just does make such quick work of things then we just nail them into place kind of like we did before actually here you see me doing the top and the bottom and then the sides i actually did this one before the dresser and this was the impetus for my new way of doing things so do it the way i like i taught you just a little bit ago and not this way it will save yourself a [Music] headache [Music] then i wanted to just finish off the base of the nightstand a little bit more so i took a piece of flat trim that i believe is two and a half inches wide and about a quarter of an inch thick and i cut that down and nailed it into place we putty like we did before on the dresser and let that dry and sand it down and i figured since everything was already dusty i would just go ahead and pre-drill the holes for the knobs then of course we're going to want to make sure everything is nice and clean then we are going to just prime the trim and the fronts of the nightstand and that's the only area we are going to paint because i ended up color matching the original ikea color in a sample paint size and then we paint two coats on the front of the nightstand in that same color so we avoided having to paint the entire thing making this super quick and easy and then i just added some cute crystal knobs and i absolutely adore how this quick easy fix turned out i think this would be really cute in a little girl's room or even as end tables in the living room but in my case i think i'm going to go ahead and just donate these to someone in need because i don't really have a home for them right now except for hanging out underneath this window but i really do love how these turned out and it was such an easy process we are on our way to the tampa ikea because i had some other errands and other things i needed to pick up in the area so it was actually more time efficient and i just thought it would be fun to shop at different ikea store i'm really excited i am going with a pre-planned list of ikea hacks so i know what i'm shopping for so let's hit the road and i'll be yeah so after about an hour and 20 minute drive we are here and i am ready to shop let's go shopping so usually for my hacks i try to avoid the upstairs just to save time but i wanted to come up here and check on a few things because i have an idea and i don't know if they're gonna have something for it or not but we're gonna give it a whirl if it looks weird that i don't have a face mask on i'm in florida i'm vaccinated and this is okay to do so i just had to stop because i thought this little vignette was really cute i am a huge fan of this kitchen i love an all-white kitchen and i love the checkerboard pattern i love the lighting love everything about this sorry honey i'm not coming home i'm moving into ikea a famous arrow is showing me where to go i came here to check out this stool because i had an idea for it i'm thinking it might be a little bit big for what i want and the price is not that awesome i mean it's 25 for a stool that's great but for what i need it for it's a little too pricey now they do have a stool over here that i like the price of much better which is this at 5.99 i still think it's too big so i might have to come up with another idea now i want to get out of the furniture section and get down to the marketplace which is where i'm going to get all of my hacks it seems like i can't make an ikea trip without stopping in the pillows so i'm gonna check this out i definitely need some inserts for some pillow covers that i ordered off of amazon the prices here are fantastic so i'm going to grab a few of those and maybe just maybe i've got my eye on a pillow over there for a diy so the orlando floral department section is way better than tampa so if you're looking for florals go to orlando one that i was most excited about they are out of and that's a real bummer i tried to track them into selling me a floor model but they said no i better leave before i buy all the other things overall we did good on our shopping trip we did miss out on one of the items i was really hoping to get it said that there were three in stock but their stuff was incorrect heading home is an hour and 40 minutes it's high traffic time but i had a good time [Music] so we are back from our adventure watch me slaughter this the curry's blood planter i hope i got that right we are going to be transforming this into a tabletop fire pit now the terracotta kind of exterior of it is a little bit too orange from the look that i'm going for i found this gorilla water sealant and it says that it's paintable and none of the other ones that i looked at said it right on the front and made it easy for me maybe they are as well but i wasn't going to take the time to read all the tiny print and you don't have to do this but terra cotta is very porous and it can really like suck in the paint so i thought this would be good so i'm going to start by spray painting the exterior in a black and we're going to get the top rim that's going to be in a satin black [Music] and then once that's dry we're going to very carefully tape it off and cover it up and paint the inside 18 karat gold spray paint it's my favorite gold spray paint color i just think it's a really pretty and true color it doesn't look brass it doesn't look bronzy but like a nice true gold color now painting something that i'm going to turn into a table top fire pit i don't know if that's a good idea or not i think it will be okay though honestly because the flame is going to be in the center now once it's all painted then we need to kind of assemble our fire pit we're going to just take whatever we can find i just ended up using a scrap piece of 1x4 and then i stacked on top of it a wood round that i had in my stash that seemed to be a great size for this bowl and that provided a nice stable base and then now it's time for our fuel now you can get this one here at the dollar tree for one dollar or you can get this one off of amazon for two dollars and the biggest difference is this one burns for two hours this burns for six so for convenience factors and not having to switch them out all the time this one's awesome if you calculate it out that way you get more burn time for the money with the one from amazon so i'll link that in the description box below we're gonna place three of those in the center to hide the mechanics of our fire bowl i bought a whole bunch of black stones that they sell at the dollar tree and these are going to work perfect i even take the bags that they were kind of held in and kind of shove those in around the base so that we aren't using more rocks than we need i ended up using like eight bags i think and i just fill in the bowl and i want to leave some of the gold showing so i make sure to leave a couple of inches of rim of that i make sure to remove the lids and cover up as much of the fuel can as possible so really all that is showing are the wicks and that's it for this super easy ikea hack and you can see how you can get a similar look using supplies that you have near you if you don't have an ikea close by just a little bit of paint and some fuel cans and some dollar tree stones and you have an elegant piece for ambiance at night or to roast some marshmallows while visiting with friends this hack is so much fun i just love it but what do you think for our next ikea hack we are going to be hacking the citrus creta pot if i said that right i had in mind that i was going to do this diy and i really thought it would be fun to do with an ikea piece now i wanted something black so i'm going to be altering this pot it's a dark charcoal gray but for where i'm putting it on my front porch which we recently made over and if you haven't seen that episode you're going to want to definitely check that out and i'll link it in the description box below all of my stuff for that was black and so i really wanted to kind of keep that black theme so we are going to be changing the exterior of this pot but i wanted to add a cool texture so the first thing we're going to do is we're going to take it outside and spray this really cool stone spray paint on it to kind of just add a little bit more texture and that actually takes a little bit of time to [Music] dry but once it does dry then we're going to go over the top of it with a black spray paint [Music] and then once that's dry we're going to go over the top of that with a water sealant since it's going to be around a lot of water and exposed to the elements i just thought that that might be a good way to finish it off with everything dry we take three bags of these decorative rocks that i picked up at the dollar tree and put them in the bottom of the pot just for some visual interest and then i fill up our pot with water do you see what we are making here i fill it right up to the room with water and then i place it on this decorative stand that i picked up at lowe's for about nine dollars now this is the stand that i decided to go with in lieu of the stools that we looked at on our ikea shopping trip and you can see that this is a much better size i got this solar powered little water fountain device off of amazon which i'll link below you can hear it kind of it wants to work right now and we're just going to set this in the water and it's going to spout out a little water feature and it's all powered by the sun no fancy thing it just kind of floats around in the water now here are a couple of things to note with a solar powered water fountain it actually works surprisingly well but it only works in full sun as you can see it's spraying really high and doing such a good job that it is spraying a lot of the water outside of the pot our pot was about 14 and a half inches wide at the top so i would recommend considering getting something a little bit wider than that so that it can kind of catch some of that water back inside the pot and not spray it all on the sidewalk i also decided to give it a little try in our swimming pool and that was really fun as well so the condensed version is a large pot with some rocks in the bottom water and a solar powered water pump and boom you have the easiest water feature ever so for our next diy ikea hack we are doing the chili pepper pot i think i said that right we are taking this pot and we are going to be creating an umbrella stand slash end table we are going to take a pvc pipe and cut it down to fit underneath and then i'm going to take some gorilla tape and kind of like tape it down to the bottom right in the center and then we are going to put cement in the bottom now i'm not going to fill it all the way up because i don't want it to weigh a thousand pounds but i do want to fill it up far enough that i feel like it will be heavy enough to hold an umbrella in place if the winds pick up and not be tipped over and that ended up being about 40 pounds of cement and i just added that little by little adding water each time and kind of mixing it up as i went and then when it was full enough i kind of just bounced it a little to even everything out and have it settled down and then i wiped all the edges and cleaned up any mess on the rim and let that dry overnight while that's setting up i'm going to take a wood round a decorative wood round that you have seen me use on this channel in all of my way cool dirt cheap episodes i've used these wood rounds for trays i've used these wood rounds for a lot of things and i thought it was the perfect size and kind of thickness to create a little table top work in a mark where center is and then i take a one and a quarter inch hole saw and saw out a hole and my battery on my drill was kind of dying in this process so i ended up having to pause while it charged but it eventually did make it through then i simply stained the top in a brier smoke gel stain which is the same kind of undertones as our pot is and i let that dry for a few hours [Music] then i took some wipe-on poly and polyurethaned the entire thing [Music] once that was dry we put our top onto the pot make sure the holes are centered up and then we slip our awesome new cabana striped umbrella in through the holes and that will hold everything together where it should be i don't permanently affix the tabletop because you never know when you need a little extra hidden storage but i just adore how this turned out it is super stable and it's quite heavy for me to handle which is good i think because it means the umbrella is not going anywhere now here's something extremely awesome about this umbrella it has solar powered led lights and it lights up at night and it has like an on off switch and everything this is just another opportunity to add some ambience in a place that people want to hang out at night but again this is a shockingly easy diy ikea hack that you could also do with stuff from your local home improvement store all right so for this next one we're doing a double hack we are doing a fake plant and a boysen bar little pot basically this is going to go inside here and you could leave it as is but for me i like to design things to the lines maybe a little bit over the top sometimes i don't know i created this little stencil that we are going to actually put on the front of our pot [Music] and then we're gonna just take some black chalk paint and just chalk paint this on now this little stencil is my definition of vega for the name of the plant it translates to fake or a plant that you can't kill but still looks real and if you watch my channel you know that if i put things in a pot i'm a cereal plant killer and i don't mean to be but i just end up killing plants i just put this silly little definition together for this now if you don't have the ability to cut a stencil i have not forgot you i have a free printable which i will link in the description box below you can size this to whatever you want just take some graphite paper and transfer it onto your pot and then take like a paint pen or paint with a little brush i've done this like on pillows and all kinds of things in the past and it works out really great i've been seeing all these plants and stands around and i thought it would be really fun to create a little plant stand so i have a three-quarter inch dowel that i picked up at hobby lobby for a dollar fifty i think we can get the job done with this one 36 inch dowel now i've seen these made a several different ways online i've seen them made with just glue which doesn't seem very sturdy and then i've also seen it done probably the proper way where they kind of cut out and then chisel out and like do a little crisscross pattern and kind of like smash them together that's probably the correct way to do it but i wanted to offer an option that was a little bit more sturdy than glue but maybe a little bit easier than the crisscross chisel option and here's what i came up with we are going to take our dowel and make these cuts either on a miter box or on a miter saw like you see me doing here the cuts are four at six inches one at four and a quarter inch and two at one and five eighths inch which you should be able to get out of one dowel and once we have those cuts we are going to pre-drill a hole exactly in the center of the four and a quarter inch piece then we are going to take what is called a screw dowel and you've seen me use these on my channel before and we will place that in a drill and tighten it up as if it were like a regular drill bit and we are going to simply drill that through that bowl and you want a little bit of screw dowel on either side of your wood dowel how many times can we say dowel then we're going to pre-drill some holes in the centers of the two 1 and five eighths inch pieces and add a little wood glue to those and then simply twist those onto either side of that screw dowel until they are nice and tight then i took mine outside so i could use my nail gun to then glue and shoot nails into the legs and i kind of propped it up on a 2x4 board to keep everything the same height while doing this if you don't have a nail gun you could use smaller screws on each of the legs or just use some finished nails and nail them in by hand then you can fill in those nail holes with some wood putty or there's a little hack that i recently learned that will give you the perfect match and it's next to free you can just take a little tiny bit of that wood glue and some of the sawdust from your cutoffs and kind of mix that together with the glue and fill in those holes that way and once that's fully dried you give everything a good sanding and do a clear coat over the top and let that dry now if i were to do this again i'd probably make the stand prior to doing our stencil because as you can see here a little bit of our definition gets cut off by it so i probably would have made this stencil a little bit smaller if i was planning on putting it on a stand but it's okay together or separate i absolutely love this double ikea hack the cement pot is a very easy ikea hack and the plant stand is probably a little bit harder but much easier than the chiseled method but i just think this is so super cute [Music] so this next ikea hack is in lieu of the one that i had originally planned because they were out of stock when they come back in stock i might try to find a way to sneak this ikea hack in because i was so excited about it i always loved the ikea pillow section and i just picked up a really inexpensive girly pillow cover and we are gonna just simply cut some vinyl that says relax and stay a while and we're gonna just heat press that right onto my pillow just press it at 340 degrees for 30 seconds on the front and 15 seconds on the back let it cool and peel back the clear film that's it now if you don't have a vinyl cutting machine i've also created another printable that you could use to trace it onto your pillow cover then fill it in with a paint pen i've done this in the past and it's worked out great and for around eight dollars we have a super stylish pillow for my new outdoor sofa i love this pillow and it's gonna look adorable with all of my other ones so what ikea item would you like to see me hack next leave it in the comment section below i'm on my way to ikea to do a little shopping for my living room makeover that's coming up but i decided to turn it into a little day date with my husband so say hi honey hi friends and so we're gonna go find some things to make over for my living room so let's go shopping [Music] some of the things that i'm looking for today are drapes possibly pillows and so we're just gonna look around and see what we can find okay so they have these really beautiful like canvas linen me looking pillows here and i have a really good fun ikea hack that i think we can do with these so i'm going to get some of these so i've decided i want to do something a little bit more neutral on my for my drapery and so these rip back curtains are awesome and they there's a really cool hack that i know that will give it a much more high-end and tailored look so it looks like you have them custom made and so i'm really excited to show you that so we're going to get some of these in 118 inches long this is exactly the kind of thing that i'm looking for i better get out of here before i buy the whole store so we're back from our shopping and i've had a day to think about what i'm gonna do with these items but now we're about ready to implement prepare for me to just slaughter these ikea names i apologize so the joffrey pillow cover we are gonna hack and i really like this it's got a really cool texture to it and we're going to be doing a french document stamp on the front of this pillow i've got a free printable and it's actually it comes in four pieces so we're going to have to separate them and put them together but it's a document stamp and i think it's going to look really really cool all we're going to do is print out the printable and then tape it all together like so now my original plan was to use this printable as a template and use graphite paper to transfer the image onto this pillow cover which is the same technique that i used for my boho name bag that i made at christmas time and it worked out great unfortunately this did not work out this time on this pillow cover and i believe it's because the fabric has a lot more texture to it and so the graphite paper was just simply not transferring the image no matter what i did i even tried rubbing the back with pencil lead and seeing if that would work it didn't work either so i'm going to still provide you the printable in case you're going to try and recreate this look by using canvas drop cloth because i do believe that that will work out just fine based off of my past experience but if you're still going to use the ikea pillow cover what i ended up doing is creating a stencil using permanent vinyl and placing that onto the canvas now this is not heat transfer vinyl because i don't want it to be permanent [Music] next i use gold marker which actually ends up looking a little bronze on the canvas which is perfect and i filled in the stencil now i put something in between the pillow to prevent any possible bleeding it's pretty thick fabric so it didn't really bleed through too much now you could use black marker or even a gray marker but for my color palette that gold marker that looked a little bronzy was perfect now if you don't have a vinyl cutting machine and you still wanted to use the ikea pillow cover you can get a stencil of your choosing from any craft store and just fill it in using the same technique [Music] once i was done filling it in i peeled it back and put in a pillow and it looks amazing i am really happy with how it turned out [Music] so for my next ikea hack i am so excited about it because i've been planning on doing this for months and months now so i customized some other curtains but i feel like the with the direction that i'm taking my living room in i'm kind of changing the style and the color palette to something that i like a little bit more when i originally started designing our home we were designing it with the idea that it would be a vacation rental so i don't know if that's the direction we're going to take anymore and so i decided to just decorate it for me so we are going to be hacking these ritva curtains and we are going to be doing a pinch pleat drape on them now i don't know if you've ever priced out custom pinch pleated drapes but they can get really pricey i worked as a designer and so i know that it can run you over a thousand dollars even up to a few thousand dollars so ikea has really hooked us up in this department because the ripfed curtains are already set up to easily become pinch pleat drapes saving you thousands of dollars using some simple pleating hooks which i will provide an amazon link for in the description box below now i've seen some tutorials where they don't do the edge hooks but i like my curtain to lay flat so we're going to put some hooks on the edges without pleating them which is a little tricky to wiggle in on the edge but i just used some toothpicks to kind of lift them open and that makes it a little easier and then you just slide them into all four slots as you see me doing here [Music] then you're gonna go on to the other side of the like stringy tab and start your first pinch pleat section now ignore the location of where i'm doing this at because i should have been doing it right next to the outside one and i end up fixing that in just a second but the battery died on my camera but it's the exact same process which i'm going to try and explain this the best i can but try watching what i'm doing as it may be a little tricky to explain but once you understand the concept it's really easy to do so what we're going to do is we're going to put our first prong into the first loop then we're going to count over five loops and then we're going to put the second prong into that loop and then five more and then five more until all four prongs are in loops then you're going to gradually slide that prong up catching all of the loops in that row until the bottom of the prong has stopped and is firmly into place makes sense [Music] then you're going to keep repeating this process all the way down the panel and you can see the awesome beautiful pinch pleatings [Music] now to finish it off we are going to take a thread and needle and we are going to sew back and forth back and forth back and forth at the base of the pleat [Music] now you could just leave it like this and be finished but i wanted to take it up a notch further and i'm going to be using some pearl and rhinestone buttons and i'm going to stitch those into place while we're at it [Music] then to finish it i knot it off [Music] now if this is a little too fancy for your own personal decor i thought it would also look great to go with fabric covered buttons that you make from an additional panel or maybe even from cutting off the hemline when you hem the curtains or you could do any kind of button that's a little bit more suited to your decor [Laughter] [Music] [Laughter] [Music] finally to hang it i got these curtain rings and you simply just slide the hooks into the little hole on the rings and hang your drape it's amazing how these drapes really brighten up my room and i love the little sparkly embellishments at the base of our pinch pleats and the best part of it all is the money we saved making these custom looking drapes using ikea curtains i love how these turned out but i'm just wondering how you would embellish yours if you're enjoying this content so far and you haven't done so already consider hitting that subscribe button below and turning the notifications on i'd love for you to stick around a while all right our next ikea hack is we are going to be hacking the hectar standing floor lamp funny story i had actually purchased a lamp that was very similar at home goods and when i saw this lamp at ikea it was actually a little bit more stylistically what i was looking for and it was 30 dollars cheaper than the one i purchased so i returned that one and on that trip i ran into two viewers it was so fun susan and carmen it was so fun to meet you and that was awesome i just want to show you how easy it is to kind of just elevate these ikea pieces by simple easy things this is how easy this is going to be we're going to take it outside leaving it mostly packaged and removing just the shade i take some painters tape and i taped off what i didn't want spray painted and then i simply spray painted a couple of really light coats of metallic gold spray paint and let it fully dry then assembly is also really easy all you have to do is just kind of screw everything together real nice and tight and then put the shade on and that's it now i really like this color it's just gorgeous but there's a really good chance that i will end up spray painting the bronzy color black since my wall sconces that are just above it are very similar in look and style and they are a matte black so i will probably let the gold really cure over the next several days and then i'll probably take it back outside and paint the rest black but if those sconces weren't there i probably would just let it be honestly and how easy was that folks seriously and doesn't it just elevate it just enough i was looking at some similar lamps on pottery barn and they were literally over 300 and mine was 45. what do you think now wasn't that last ikea hack so shockingly easy well i've got another shockingly easy one for you i grabbed this black globe i think it's called the lindrande globe looks like kind of like a chalkboard and i thought it would be fun to put this image on here it says be the good you want to see in the world get it anyways so i just thought we could transfer this image onto this and we can use that same exact technique that we used to do the pillow cover it's going to be a little trickier because it's curved surface now i'm going to cheat and i made myself a stencil on my cricut machine just because i have it why not use it it makes life so much easier and we're going to just put this on our globe and the it's going to be tricky it's not going to want to go in there very good because it's such a curved surface but i think if we do it very carefully we can get it on there just [Music] fine [Music] and then once we have it on there i want to prevent bleeding so i'm going to use some black chalk paint that i think is pretty close to this finish and we are going to just go over stencil in the black chalk paint let it dry and then once it's dry we are gonna use some white chalk paint and just fill in our stencil so whatever way you decide to do this whether you use the stencil or the image transfer i think it will work great and it will turn out so cute now if you don't have an ikea i saw globes like this one at ross recently and i think it was 12.99 about the same size you could spray it with some chalkboard paint and do the whole thing black and then still get an almost identical look you can maybe even find one at a thrift store i don't know but i just love how this turned out it's so cute it's going to look really cute on my shelves but i think this is so easy so cute i love this but what do you think our next ikea hack is and this is going to be definitely the easiest hack of them all but i saw this vase and i just loved it it actually looks really similar to things that i've seen at pottery barn and it's got a really cool texture but it had this blue rim well if you don't have blue decor in my case i'm trying to get away from blue decor then you might pass this by but i'm telling you you shouldn't because we're going to hack this and make it perfect for any decor now i'm going to be using this mineral chalk paint and it's kind of like a taupey color and it's really going to neutralize this kind of bold blue we're going to just literally paint around the edge of this rim and change the color of it and it's that easy literally just changing this color of this rim is gonna change the whole look and make it work for any decor now you could paint it green you could paint it gray you could paint it black you could paint whatever color you want but i really liked the idea of using this kind of taupey color and making it super neutral but i didn't want to leave it there so i went to hobby lobby and picked up these snow ball flowers they are really similar to hydrangeas but just a little bit smaller and a little bit more delicate and we are going to just throw some of these stems in here so they were they didn't have as many snowballs as i wanted so i also got some geraniums that looked really similar and we're going to kind of just mix those in so you won't even notice but i'm not even going to cut the stems i'm literally going to just bend them in case i want to use them somewhere else and we're going to just simply put them in this vase and it's going to look so cute on my shelves as well what do you think of that hack it's like so shockingly easy but makes all the difference now if you didn't have blue decor you might keep walking but with one simple change it makes it work for any decor and i love that but what do you think so my next ikea hack is the white dresser that's already in their bedroom you've seen these dresses all over i'm sure and we are going to be giving it just a little refresh this is going to be a really easy makeover because we're going to just do something to the front of the drawer and that will give it a whole new look to easily hack this ikea dresser i'm just using my cricut joy to create some stickers that say number one number two number three this i feel will give a vintage industrial vibe to this dresser which is kind of what we're going for in this room now this isn't a cricut tutorial but the cricut joy does not take up a lot of room and it is pretty easy to use and it's perfect for this project so we are going to apply this to our dresser front and we're going to leave the knobs on for now just because i want to kind of see how they are in proportion now you can use stickers for this honestly you don't have to use a cricut machine i just find it a little bit easier and i can get the exact font that i want but you can definitely go and get some stickers and do this as well so we're just gonna line this up it doesn't matter that it's white because it's just acting as kind of like a stencil at this point and we're just going to rub this on now this is removable vinyl so this will act as a great stencil just peel this back and we can actually reuse this so we'll hang on to that and perfect so we've got it on here and we're going to do that to all the dressers and we could actually just have painted this and then put the vinyl on i didn't want my kids to mess with it so it's going to be a stencil [Music] perfect i don't know if you can see that very well because it's white on white [Music] so before we paint we're going to remove the hardware and that will make painting so much easier and we're gonna just take some black chalk paint this is just folk art rich black and paint it on the front of the dressers being careful we're committed now just do this carefully on the edge and i'm actually i kind of want to get over here by the stencil so i'll wipe a little bit off and then we'll just kind of do a light brushing in both directions and brush it on [Music] two light coats are better than one heavy coat i found it's just better to do it that way you'll get a better finish it's just better to be patient [Music] looking good so we'll let this dry and then we'll do a second coat [Music] now the moment of truth we're going to remove our reverse stencil with the stickers and we'll see what it looks like so here we go okay oh awesome nice okay that's pretty cool right and then we're gonna just peel off the bottom two stickers and replace the knobs and this hack is done i love love love this ikea hack it just goes to show you with a tiny bit of paint and a couple of stickers what you can do to change up the look of a dresser i have maybe two dollars invested in this and i think it makes a huge impact i'm especially excited to see it standing in front of the awesome accent wall i have planned for behind it [Music] okay so this is the piece that we're going to be working on and this is an ikea mom 3 drawer dresser so we're going to start by adding some trim and what i have here is a one and a half by 36 inch and it's a half inch thick um piece of craft wood that i picked up at home depot it was about 250 um for this here and you can do this for like one of two ways you can either measure it out which is a good way to go but a lot of times what i like to do is just hold it up and take a pin and mark the back side so now i'm going to take you outside to show you how to use a miter saw all right what do you think of the glasses aren't they attractive well being safe is attractive you just don't want anything getting in your eye and causing any damage it's just not worth it we are going to take our piece that we have marked and we are just going to set it down here on our miter saw this is a chicago electric it was very affordable this is like a perfect starter saw in order to work the saw we release it by pulling in that button and then here you pull it in and then you pull on that and that starts it up so let's make our cut hey honey you like so hot my husband thinks i'm hot with these glasses on so it's okay all right so for this next part i'm going to be using my most favorite power tool and that is my finished nailer that's hooked up to an air compressor so to switch these out or to put them on in the first place you simply pull back this little thing right there and insert that in and then let it go i like this style to be right in the middle so that's 150 here and 80 here and you'll know if you need more pressure or less pressure by how far the nail goes in so if it's not going all the way into the wood you know you need to turn this dial right here and increase the pressure or decrease the pressure and then all you do is turn it on all right so i've got this laying down on its back it's just going to make it easier for us to work with it so what we're going to do is we're going to flip it over and just pick one side and i'm just putting a little bit of gorilla wood glue on the back and this is just to kind of add a little bit of security and then we will flip it over right up here by the top where we're going to line it up and i'm just going to jiggle it a little bit to kind of work out some of that glue and then we are going to take our favorite tool the finished nailer and we are just going to pop a few nails in for good measure so i do it one side and then the other side and then one in the middle and that should be good and then we'll just do this on all of it and then if you have any wood glue squeeze out just kind of wipe off the excess with a rag or your finger like me so we've got our extra piece that we're going to use for the side slats and what we're gonna do is just measure in between so i can see that it's slightly under five inches just barely and so we're gonna make that mark and then we're gonna go cut i don't want to forget the ends they're kind of boring too so i'm going to add the same trim except for a little wider this one's like a one and a half and this is like a two and a half so it's a little bit wider it's the same process on the sides as on the front all right so next up we need to fill in the nail holes all the cracks and crevices and get it all nice and tight so i just got some spackle and we're just gonna wipe that in there and then we'll let it dry all right so we're all spackled and it looks good we've got to let this dry and we've worked hard so it's a chocolate break time i really like york peppermint patties what's your little reward of choice so chocolate break okay so our spackle is dried and i am ready to sand this now i'm going to speed up the process with my electric sander but i'm going to finish it out and do the final finishing touches with a sanding sponge um and the reason i'm going to use the sander is again to speed it up but also to kind of hit up this surface which is actually going to be the only part of the original piece that's really going to get paint on it that will help the paint adhere to the piece a little bit better so we'll just sand all right so i've got all of the big stuff so now i'm just going to come in here and do a few finishing touches with my sanding sponge but without that electric sander this would have been a much longer process so i highly recommend an electric sander so one coat of primer and two coats of paint and that is on everywhere that is not receiving a mirror i have my mirrors and we get to make this look so glamorous but before we permanently attach our mirror to the drawer i want to do a dry fitting so i had the mirror store pre-drilled where the knobs would go and so i just want to pre-drill those in the wood and it fits like a glove so then what we're going to do is we're going to take a sharpie and then we're going to just mark where the knobs go we're going to take our drill and pre-drill those holes so now that we've got our holes drilled we are going to just apply some of this liquid nails and i'm just going to do it kind of in an s shape and then put your mirror right into place it should go in without any issues and then just jiggle it back and forth just slightly there should be a little bit of wiggle room and then just make sure your holes are all lined up i decided to bring the party upstairs to the bedroom where it's actually going to be sitting i plan on doing a full bedroom makeover over the next month or so so stay tuned for those so i am going to just squeeze on a whole bunch of adhesive that got me statewide glass recommended that i since it's going on top that i should do a quarter inch thick i did 1 8 inch everywhere else so that's what this is that looks perfect so now to hold it into place while it dries and you should do this on all the pieces just use blue tape because it will hold it in place without ruining the paint [Music] all right there's a reason why this is going in mommy's room and not a kid's room and it's because it does fingerprint and we've handled the mirrors a lot so now it's time to clean them off and get it all sparkly so now it's time to add a little jewelry these crystal knobs i actually got off of amazon i stopped buying knobs and hardware in this big box stores a long time ago it is so much more affordable and cheaper to buy it off of online whether it's ebay or amazon so i'll put the link to these below but these ended up being like 83 cents a knob at the big box stores it was gonna be four dollars a knob so this is a huge savings and it's something i highly recommend one little side note because we did add the mirror we do need to get a little bit longer screw so i went out and got one and a quarter inch they come with one inch so just hang on to those for another time you might need them later you want to be sure to put these on just tight enough that they're on secure and not so tight that it cracks your glass so just be careful of that [Music] if you enjoyed this episode here's another one that i think you'll like as well and if you haven't done so already consider hitting that subscribe button right there it's super easy to do and i'd love it if you joined the diy niner family and to all of my diy niners i just want to remind you that you are more powerful than you know we'll see you next time bye
