did you know Zelda director Eiji Aonuma once revealed that Twilight Princess was a sequel to Wind Waker the game was planned to reuse wind wakers art assets and leftovers from Wind Waker can still be found in Twilight princess's data Nintendo of America told all Numa that western sales of winwaker was sluggish as its cartoon graphics made it seem childish onuma realized this new cartoon style Zelda might have the same problem and wanted to create a more realistic game to avoid lackluster sales Miyamoto didn't believe a simple change in art would suffice and suggested they focus on new gameplay innovations ocarina of time was considered the most realistic Zelda thus far so the team looked to it as a starting point they decided to focus on what couldn't be done in Ocarina on the n64 such as horseback combat some developers even went horse riding for research designer Keisuke Nisha Mori recalls Miyamoto just said go and ride a horse we weren't able to fully master horse riding but we got to appreciate that feeling of the size of the horses you get by standing beside them as well as the sensation of riding a large animal the kind of enjoyable sense of not being fully in control one aspect of ocarina of time that Nintendo wanted to emulate was the difference in abilities between young and adult link to do this the team needed two forums that link could switch between on a whim a Numa suggested that link transform into a wolf and the idea stuck Miyamoto thought it would be visually gold to see the back of a four-legged creature for hours on end and suggested another course was Midna whose name derives from the word midnight chic was planned to return for the game however the idea of using chic was put aside and the unused design informs sheiks appearance in Super Smash Brothers Brawl Twilight Princess was officially unveiled to the public during e3 2004 the trailer received a standing ovation something that's stuck with the developers and motivated them while they worked on the game art director Satoru Takizawa mentioned since this was such a big project that retire when everyone started to feel mentally drained at those times and even now I must admit just thinking of that movie and the positive reaction to it is enough to keep me going the trailer was put together by Nintendo of America localizers using all in-game footage even though fans thought this was the coolest iteration of link yet Nintendo purposely tried to make link uncool the player can make link perform actions and expressions that it seems strange if he were a real person Nintendo felt a trendy character wouldn't be able to pull off these weird actions convincingly so they made sure link wasn't too cool a similar event occurred during the development of ocarina of time in their own words developers gave Link long underwear to make sure he wasn't too suave and still fit the timeless Nintendo style around this time Phantom Hourglass was being produced for the DS a new methought phantom our glasses touch controls were extremely inventive in the Twilight Princess lacked this level of innovation Nintendo's new revolution console was also in development eventually rebranded of course as the week Miyamoto thought the Wii Remote was ideal for aiming arrows and suggested they try it out a numa saw an opportunity to bring new innovations to Zelda and began developing a pointing based interface for the bow and arrow aiming at the screen made the game more visceral so the team adapted mechanics and camera controls to the new interface Nintendo even tried making link moves simply with the Wii Remote similar to phantom our glasses touch controls an uma said we started trying out various ideas one of which was dropping the 3d stick altogether and instead just using the Wii Remote only for its pointer function in a similar way to the Nintendo DS stylus these weren't the only zelda conventions the team tried to mix up they even questioned whether links should be able to cut grass or not a gesture based prototype was also made where link fights enemies in a first-person view the perspective didn't show the variety in Link's movements so the game's viewpoint was restored to third-person link is traditionally left-handed but i numa thoughts swinging the remote with his right hand to control the sword and links left hand felt strange to resolve this the entire wee version of the game was flipped when production of Twilight Princess came to a close the development team filled Hyrule with Me's just for fun Miyamoto told MTV they've been having fun just fiddling around with Me's in the Twilight Princess engine it's kind of funny because you can see Me's running around the world of Hyrule but there's no telling that would ever actually come to fruition it's just our team members having fun and taking off some stress after a tough development cycle Twilight Princess had a massive amount of game assets the most yet in a Zelda game Nintendo had the resourceful idea to create a side story reusing its assets similar to how Majora's Mask was made using the assets from ocarina of time this side story was eventually developed into Link's crossbow training Miyamoto believed they didn't need an epic tale to make a great game and suggested the team make a game using the Wii zapper this was a direction that didn't sit well with many Nintendo developers as their ideas for expansive adventures were shot down the integrations of the Wii zapper brought up several new questions such as should link use a gun Miyamoto even proposed the Terminator style story about a time look to justify giving link an automatic weapon the rest of the staff rejected the idea immediately they ended up giving link a crossbow and simply made it shoot like a modern firearm though many fans loved Twilight Princess Miyamoto has a reserved view of the game in 2008 he told MTV what I've been saying to our development teams recently is that Twilight Princess was not a bad game by any means but still he felt like there was something missing the fused shadow from Twilight Princess had similar powers and physical features to Majora's Mask it's possible that Majora's Mask was created by the same tribe who made the fused shadow known as the interlopers the twili in Twilight Princess or descendants of the interlopers and the Twilight frequently wear masks and every unused design for Midna depicts her wearing a mask the interlopers were skilled in magic and later banished from Hyrule the ancient tribe in Majora's Mask used the mask to cast spells and later vanished the happy mask salesman also mentions that Majora's Mask was sealed in shadow and the realm of Shadows is a name given to the Twilight Realm what's also interesting is that the interlopers were nameless in the Japanese version of Twilight Princess just like the ancient clan in Majora's Mask this video covered the secrets and history of Twilight Princess but what
