hey guys what's going on it's Don here from Nova Spirit Tech and welcome back to the channel and today I'm here to tell you that you're using FSR wrong on the stee deck so let's get [Music] started so not too long ago I had a couple of friends reach out to me about the steam deck not performing the way they wanted to so naturally I just told them hey enable FSR and you should be getting better frame rates now they replied what they did and it doesn't work so at that point I had to explain to them how to get it to work work and basically led me to making this video for them or anyone else who's listening now my primary gaming device now is not even the PC anymore other than some bigger games like Star Citizen and stuff like that I generally play everything on my steam deck it's just so much easier and it's more portable but with that being said one of the biggest features that you can do on the steam deck to get more frames is FSR which is amd's version of adaptive scaling to give you better frames and better look even though it's scaled down so basically you have a canvas of in our case 1280 by 800 if you are doing 1:1 ratio and you're only getting 30 frames per second or 20 frames per second naturally want to scale down your resolution so it could actually produce more frames but by doing so uh stuff becomes blurry it doesn't look as clear so FSR kicks in to sharpen the blurriness and scales it back up to the original canvas which is 1280 by 800 now what my friends were doing is they were just enabling the option but not doing anything with the resolution so it naturally just stayed at one:1 so there was no FSR enabled or scaling and even if they did try to scale the resolution they weren't putting it into a mode where it would kick in so I'm going to show you on this game called risk of reain it's actually very easy because it actively Works without having to reboot the game so let's jump into it so here we are in risk of Reign this is the original resolution of 1280 by 800 and it plays 60 frames but that's not the point the point is how it looked and how to get it to work the first thing you want to do is switch over to this and you can see FSR is actually off so even if you have the options on like right over here FSR sharpening 3 it doesn't do anything because FSR is naturally off now to get that enabled what you need to do is actually change the resolution so I'm going to go in here let me turn this down so I can see what I'm clicking on uh go into here and change a resolution over to somewhere around 928 by 580 and then I am going to hit apply and as soon as I do that you're going to notice a lot more blurriness especially around the tree line and this module over here so I'm going to have a side to side screenshot between the original resolution and this resolution but what's also happening is if I switch back to my performance overlay you're going to see FSR is still disabled even though I scaled my resolution so so it's not doing anything to sharpen the blurriness in the reduced frames or in reduced resolution now to fix that you basically have to turn off full screen mode and jump into Window mode and as soon as I do that you're going to notice FSR comes on and the sharpness comes back even though at a lower resolution so I'm going to have a side by-side comparison between native resolution reduced resolution and then FSR with the reduced resolution and you can see that once the FSR kicks in it looks almost like native resolution it might not be as crisp but it's there it brings back all the details even if you have the scaled resolution now again on this game is hard to tell as far as the frame rates because we already camped we don't need to go anymore but you will instantly notice that once you have uh FSR enabled and it is kicked in it will still be almost as sharp as native resolution now I'm going to jump into another game where this applies even more all right so the next game we have is called armor cord 6 and right now I am just in my garage and I played about 14 hours into this I'm like end of Act 2 possibly now here we have the garage and we're doing about 33 frames per second and FSR is off and it's on its native resolution well almost native resolution because I kept it by 16 by9 so here we have the resolution and you can see it looks very clear I could read the text I could read everything over here and and looks really clean I'm going to swap this over to a lower resolution to something like uh um 928 X 580 hit yes to save the settings again this is still not using FSR and you could see it's a lot blurry on the font a lot blurry on the text and a lot blurrier on certain parts of the core but I am getting 44 frames per second which is pretty good I increased it by like 10 frames per second also um just keep in mind I do use only a 10 watt uh TDP instead of 15 I know at 15 I get a lot more but I don't like the noisiness and I get better battery performance at 10 10 so I leave usually at 10 and play around with it there now next thing what I'm going to do is head back into the option go to graphics and swap out full screen to Window mode automatically now everything is on for the FSR the font is actually a little bit more readable than it was before and it's not as blurry and again games like this and you can see the game scope it actually went up in frames from 44 to now 48 49 and you could see that the FSR is on so ultimately that's how you would enable FSR now here's a problem that you're going to run into especially in this game uh because we're in Window mode I cannot get 16 by10 resolution other than the native resolution anymore so going down I can't get 16 by10 and some games are going to have that issue you're going to be stuck at 16.9 when you're trying to use FSR because of this Window mode issue it's not perfect for every game but that's how it works that is it that was just a simple video on getting FSR to play nice with your device so if you guys are having trouble trying to kick that on or get it running that's how you do it and if you guys want to see more content about the steam deck let me know down in the
