[Music] Yamaha's SCR 950 was one of the best surprises to come out of last autumns bike shows properly stylish scrambler with y spoked wheels steel mud guards and that xt 500 like seamless tank and all Yamaha had done was adapt an XV 950 our cruiser of course that many wouldn't actually go off-road cruisers are at the bottom of my list of things to tackle trails on somewhere near ice skates so I arrived at the press launch in Sardinia with absolutely no expectations of growing trail riding but we did well sort of Yamaha is not pretending it's an off-road bike they say it's a road bike adapted for a bit of off-roading and the adaptations include a new subframe raising the seat by 140 millimeters to 838 millimetres take off one of the side panels and you'll find a big empty space beneath this the new straight seat the front where is now a 19-inch which also raises ground clearance by 10 millimetres to 145 millimeters and it's got Bridgestone trail wing dual purpose tires there's a new wide handlebar with a foam pad in case you bash your chin after landing that triple backflip and the silencer is slightly more up swept and the bike has new styling details everywhere it's got a circular theme according to Yamaha round digital clock like the X speeds round tail light round indicators mirrors and headlight I noticed it also in the wheels it weighs 250 kilograms fully fueled and you can feel the mask over 942 CC engine when you lift it off the side down Yamaha right it's no off-road bike it doesn't have a suspension travel to carry that weight off-road it's sort of plaited through deep holes on the gentle fire trail type gravel and dirt roads we tackled but I didn't feel quite as unnatural as I might have expected the pegs are a little wide apart as they would be on a cruiser but the bars are well positioned to reach while standing up and the tank is narrow so there's space to move the bike about between your knees the knobby tires also made it possible to get up to decent ish speed in 4th gear with confidence and it's only got a five-speed box we even cross a shallow stream at one point admittedly not in 4th gear but I didn't feel like we're pushing our luck too much I suppose any bike may be endowed with some off-road ability by nobly rather but not every bike has a riding position to make it fun and the SCR 950 does if you want to take a gentle trail riding maybe there's an off-road shortcut between the custom bike show and barbershop then you can on-road it's a very different sort of scrambler to Ducati scrambler the underlined Cruiser is present in the Yamaha the SCR Engine is talk biased with fifty five point three horsepower and fifty three point six pound foot and there's no point revving it much peak power is at 5500 rpm and there's no rev counter to tell you when you get there anyway instead you change up to keep it in the low down happy zone of talk and lazily chuck it through corners in third gear the center of gravity feels low so despite the weight it tips into bent pretty easily and there's enough ground clearance to maintain good pace to peddle touchdown before too long but brand away here are blobs will simply indicate that you are a hero that's why they called that the brakes are competent with enough feeling power from the single front disc and abs is of course standard sometimes it went into neutral instead of second and a shape of the gear selector men are sometimes hurts my foot under its curved arm which was uncomfortable also the airbox sticks out quite a lot on the right hand side between the two cylinders and my knee was against it when sitting on the bike but I want to be STR 950 as much for its style as how it performs it's no Ducati scrambler that makes about 20 horsepower more weighs less and has an engine which isn't so bottom envious but the Yamaha looks closer to a genuine custom bike than the Ducati to me and aren't custom bikes the inspiration of this whole retro bike class if I had one I wouldn't take it off-road I just happily make my way around on it do the London commute on it and perhaps occasionally stop at the trendy to bike shed calf ensured it's where I'd sit back and look at it it starts from about a grand more than the Ducati at eight four nine nine so I may have to drink water instead of lattes [Applause]
