[Music] a video game series is an odd thing some are cut incredibly short ending before their time fans of these series are left to wonder what would have happened if these games had been allowed to continue on some series are incredibly lucky and are successful enough to have a plethora of entries but this comes with its own set of problems fans can get tired of the same old thing a series can grow old and outdated many things can happen to kill a series that's been running for too long the best thing you can do is try and change things up keep a series fresh for as long as possible with yakuza 7 this series does just that yakuza 7 changes everything about the yakuza series from the gameplay to the characters and story this is an entirely new side to yakuza that we haven't seen before but somehow amidst all of the changes it still feels like the yakuza we know and love all of the hallmarks are still there it's a delicate balance and yakuza 7 walks that line incredibly well when i started talking about yakuza i couldn't wait to get to yakuza 7 because it's one of my favorite entries in the entire series and the most recently released mainline one today i'll be delving deep into yakuza 7 taking a look at story gameplay mechanics and everything in between if you haven't seen my previous videos on the yakuza series i would recommend going to check them out now if you'd like to support the channel you can do so over on patreon where i upload longer versions of my full retrospectives and weekly text posts if you'd like to support the channel for free then you can do so by liking the video and subscribing to the channel as it really helps me out spoilers for yakuza 7. hey dad it's me your favorite son and today i'd like to talk about yakuza 7. yakuza 7 was announced on august 26th 2017. yakuza 7 was a big change and the biggest change was that of the combat the yakuza series would be switching from the action brawler that we've all become familiar with to a turn-based rpg i remember when i heard this announcement and i was incredibly excited i had always thought that yakuza would be served incredibly well by leaning into its rpg elements but this wasn't leaning it was a full fall and i was ready for it i remember some people online not being so excited though sega themselves were apprehensive too and noted that if the turn-based style wasn't well received they would return to the old systems yakuza 7 was also the first game to receive an english dub since the first yakuza game in 2005. since the series was becoming popular in the west sega decided to include this for fans who didn't speak japanese along with the dub and the gameplay change we also got a total shift in character ichiban was introduced as the new face of the series replacing kitiyu the new story would also take place in yokohama mostly a completely new location with all these changes fans were wondering if the game could stay true to the spirit of the series yakuza 7 or yakuza like a dragon or the ugagutoku 7 was released in japan on january 16th 2020 for the playstation 4 and was released worldwide on november 10th 2020 for the playstation 4 windows xbox one and xbox series x a few notes before we get into the game i bought yakuza 7 on release as i was incredibly excited for its arrival i've since upgraded to the playstation 5 though and will be playing that version of the game as the load times are greatly decreased my second note is on the format of this review if you've seen my previous videos on the yakuza series you'll know that yakuza is known for its plethora of side content there are a mountain of things to get lost in outside of the story of these games because of that we'll first talk about the story and the main gameplay of yakuza 7. near the end of the video i will go back through and talk about all of yakuza 7's distractions the last note is on the language version of yakuza 7 that i played i will say that i have played yakuza 7 with both the japanese audio and the english audio for this review though i played through the game with the english audio for two reasons one so that for the myriad of people that listen to my reviews they can hear the dialogue and immediately understand it without having to look over at the video two because i genuinely like the english dub more than the japanese audio it's just got a really interesting charm to it and it fits the characters in the game really well there's also some really funny moments that you don't get with the japanese audio which we'll talk about in a bit it's also just amazing that we're finally at a point where we're getting english audio in mainline yakuza games and i think it would be a waste to not use that yakuza 7 begins with a play a daughter is trying to get revenge for the murder of her father a young boy is playing the daughter though a man named masumi the crowd loves it and backstage the man is accosted by his mother yoko masami hasn't cut the confetti for their next performance and this angers her she takes all of his tips and even threatens him with scissors masami's father gets the woman to back off and yoko leaves with her boyfriend we see that this isn't the first time masumi has been abused as his makeup is hiding a scar on his cheek masumi and his father spend the rest of the night on the town making their way to a high-end chinese restaurant to get some peking duck when masumi heads to the restroom his father is shot at the table we jump to december 31 2000 new year's eve masami arakawa has now grown up and become patriarch of his own family in the tojo clan masumi just wants to have lunch and calls to ichi but joe sawashiro has already sent him out on a collections run sawashiro is the captain of the arakawa family the yakuza don't recognize new year's eve which explains why saurshiro still sent him out to pick up the money if the money doesn't sleep then they don't we quickly see this ichi referenced before who's our new main character his name is ichiban kasuga and he's chasing down a thug named ushio we see the return of the full chases from previous yakuza games we have to actually avoid people and objects in the street and complete qtes this doesn't appear very often but i was glad to see the change from six's system ushio has been selling some nasty videos inappropriate tapes of animals doing stuff ichiban had to put a stop to him because people will come complaining to arakawa's family since it's their turf ushio punches ichiban and we have our first battle normally i would wait until we get into the story a little bit to describe the intricacies of combat but since it's such a big change from the previous games i'd like to briefly describe the system here it starts out pretty simple and gets more complex as the story goes on so for now i'll just get into the basics yakuza 7 is a true turn-based rpg but it presents some really interesting mechanics like most turn-based rpgs each character takes their turn to do some sort of attack use an item or a skill we can simply attack the enemy doing damage to them use a skill to heal ourselves our party do high damage to the enemy or in an area or even buff ourselves or our allies we can guard by hunkering down and waiting for the next attack or we can use items from our inventory all of this is pretty standard but one interesting thing yakuza presents is in its defense when our characters are being attacked we can press the circle button in time with the enemy's attacks to mitigate some of the damage from the attack this will greatly help conserving your health in a fight and can greatly change the tide of battle we can gain experience and level up our character to increase our stats making them stronger we can also equip weapons gear and accessories to make us more of a trying opponent for our enemies this is far from the whole story though we'll eventually get party members access to multiple jobs or classes and tons of ways to improve our skills but for now it's just ichiban the whole system hasn't lost its classic yakuza spirit though it's flashy over the top and ichiban will still even grab items off the street if they're in the way and use them as improvised weapons ichiban defeats the thug and his friend mitsuo steps in to make sure he's okay mitsuo is incredibly happy because the money they got from ushio will fill their collections quota but ichiban wants to return the money to the people who got scammed ichiban is incredibly worried that his new perm got messed up in the fight but mitsuo wonders why ichi always lets the guys get hits in when he could wipe the floor with them he says that he envisions himself as a character from a dragon quest rpg and he's only being fair by giving the other guy a few punches ichiban [ __ ] loves dragon quest and even though the yakuza has made him a different person dragon quest has shaped him into the man he is today it gave him the hero's spirit this is incredibly important to ichiban's character and we'll get into that in a bit ichiban makes his way around the city helping out various people that he knows this subtly and slowly introduces us to a few concepts the first is that ichiban is a stand-up guy that cares about his community second ichiban grew up in shangri-la the soap land that we've seen destroyed and more recently in yakuza 6 as a broken down dilapidated building the third important piece of information we find out is that the arakawa family are kind of small time in the yakuza this doesn't matter to ichiban though and he would never leave the arakawa family ichiban even takes care of arakawa's son who's in a wheelchair the two young yakuza have to hit their collections quota for the day they head to public park 3 to find a construction worker named hiratsuka who owes a loan shark 500 000 yen ichiban knows the guy from when they were kids but he doesn't want to budge finally we battle him and ichiban wins he takes the man's wallet and dumps all of his money taking only the wallet itself not the cash inside mitsuho can't understand why ichiban would do something like that apparently hiratsuka took the loan out to pay his mother's medical bills and when his mother got sick she had to close her nearby candy store that she owned for years sarashiro only asked for them to get the man's wallet so they shouldn't be in too much trouble saurshiro calls them and tells ichiban that he's supposed to be with the young master arakawa's son that ichiban takes care of ichiban heads over to the young masters apartment today is a really big day because it's masato's girlfriend's birthday but the two aren't supposed to be doing this arukawa is pretty protective of his son but regardless they have to get his girlfriend a nice gift close by masato reveals what he has in his bag some sort of drug inside of an injector it's an experimental cocktail that can give him the ability to walk for a short time he doesn't want to look weak in front of yumeno his girlfriend so he asks ichiban to plunge it into his chest ichiban can't do it so masato does it himself and it works masato and ichiban head into the club and we realize that yumino is a hostess she's currently serving another customer but masato offers a higher bid for the girl and takes her back to the table apparently the man she was with works for the tokyo pd though so that can't be good ichiban got yumino a cheap gift and masato got her an incredibly expensive watch he wants to spend his life with the girl eventually she gets pulled away by a waiter and ichiban heads to the bathroom he's down on himself at this point because he isn't helping masato with the ladies very much and at that point he overhears yumino talking to horanucci yumeno doesn't really like masato at all she's just using him for the expensive gifts that he gives her and she's just scared to say anything to him because his father is arakawa she plans to sell the watch and ichiban leaves masato must have heard everything because he's outside and wants to settle the bill ichiban and mitsuo head back to the family offices he gives sawashiro the money he got from helping masato and sawashiro quickly realizes the bills are wrapped with a bill strap from the bank masato uses sawashiro doesn't like ichiban and thinks he's a terrible yakuza he even wants to take one of his pinkies but arakawa shows up and takes ichiban into his office arakawa can't understand why ichiban doesn't get along with sauershiro ichiban explains that for him the yakuza is about honor and for sawashiro it's about money arakawa tries to put it into terms that ichiban can understand the family is like a party from ichiban's favorite rpgs ichiban is the warrior out in front mitsuo is a support character and sawashiro manages their operations ichiban thinks that arakawa must be their king but he views himself more like their father arakawa doesn't talk to masato much these days and wants to know how his son is doing ichiban tells him that he's okay and the two head out to dinner the two get on the subject of love as they see many couples celebrating their new year together arakawa decides to tell the story of the only woman he ever loved 24 years ago arakawa was still serving in the hikawa family the boss wanted him to marry his daughter but he was already seeing a girl named akane they dated in secret and eventually akane got pregnant when the boss found out they beat arakawa and put out a hit on his girl and his child akane was in labor and the two planned to meet up and escape akane was cornered at the coin lockers and arakawa told her to put the baby in a locker and he would come pick him up arakawa got jumped and eventually made his way to the lockers but when he heard a baby screaming he punched the locker to get it open the baby had hypothermia and it damaged his organs which is why masato can't walk eventually the yakuza found akane at a bar and killed her after that the hakawa family was destroyed implying that arakawa himself destroyed them he finishes the story by telling ichiban that he considers him a son even if only by oath arakawa wants some peking duck calling back to his last dinner with his own father but the only chinese restaurant is closed for the night ichiban gets a little too excited and the two decide to go to their usual spot as they pass shangri-la ichiban decides to reflect on his own past 23 years ago ichiban's mother was working in the soap land after he was born she abandoned him and jiro kasuga the owner took him in and raised him ichiban eventually dropped out of school and got into a fight with a yakuza one day when he was about to get beaten for hitting a yakuza he told them that he was a member of the arakawa family they didn't believe him and called arakawa himself and when the man showed up he did pretend that ichiban was one of his guys even offering his own pinky for him this caused ichiban to stand outside the arakawa office for four months begging to be led into the family arakawa eventually gave in and made him one of his own the two head to theater square to watch the countdown to new year's and they see a woman being harassed they step in but when they beat the punks up the woman runs away ichiban goes to get some beers and enjoys a night in the park he falls asleep in the park and is woken up by a cop the next morning it seems someone nicked ichiban's wallet while he was sleeping arakawa calls and tells ichiban to head to the offices but to take the back roads apparently something happened and the city is crawling with cops when he arrives the sakaki family attacks ichiban telling him that the arakawa family is in deep ichiban finds arakawa who tells him that the sakaki are their rivals they're close to the omi alliance and apparently sawashiro killed one of their men last night if the tojo finds out the arakawa family could be done for because they're outranked in the clan arakawa asks ichiban to take the fall because he can't afford to lose sawashiro ichiban gladly accepts but he'll have to be banished from the family it'll mean a lighter sentence for him and arakawa promises to get him reinstated before he gets out of jail mitsuho calls ichiban as he leaves the office and we realize that it's ichiban's birthday he wishes his friend a good life and heads to a ramen shop to have a last meal before he turns himself in at the police station screw it yo hit me with one more huh sure coming right up another beef bowl ichiban is finally found guilty and sentenced to 15 years over a year into his prison sentence ichiban has been working hard he refuses to take another inmate's work and they beat him for it he only retaliates after they talk bad about the arakawa family this earns ichiban another three years in prison but he couldn't let them get away with saying bad things about his boss i just have to point out here how amazing this game looks everything is incredibly realistic i remember the first time i played yakuza 7 and watching this scene i was shocked at even the bread look at the bread fifteen years later ichiban gets a letter from arakawa he wishes that ichiban was out of prison and promises that he'll get him that peking duck dinner when he's out we finally jump forward to the present 2019 ichiban is released from prison but arakawa is nowhere to be found boss i'm so sorry when i got into that fight i wasn't even thinking about how long you had already been waiting for me an extra three years i made you wait just because i did something stupid i'm sorry i failed you i held you up for so long but i'm out now i'm finally back the guard tells him that anti-yakuza laws have been cracking down on the families and a big shot like arakawa wouldn't be out in the open getting his underling out of prison times have changed ichiban is in a similar situation to kitty you when we first meet him he's just gotten out of prison for a crime that he didn't commit he's lost in searching for his mentor the man that he looks up to and means everything to him just then a man walks up to ichiban koichi adachi he's an ex-cop who now works at the dmv adachi has some business with ichiban he knows everything about the man ichiban doesn't care but adachi is persistent and follows him ichiban gets a haircut but perms aren't in style anymore and the lady gives him a huge fro ichiban heads to the cemetery with adachi still following him he finds suzumuri's grave the man that sawashiro killed all those years ago adachi knows that ichiban didn't kill him but he won't fess up ichiban sees arakawa and saurshiro walking through the cemetery but as he tries to get to them he's stopped by some goons he insists that he's in the arakawa family himself but they don't believe him we have to battle them and adachi steps in to pull him off before he gets killed ichiban tries to yell to arakawa but he ignores him adachi thinks that arakawa must have forgotten about ichiban we know this is impossible because ichiban just got a letter from him a couple of years ago ichiban doesn't want to think that the man doesn't want to talk to him it's just not possible he must be getting old he decides to wait by the grave of suzumori for arakawa but arakawa is visiting a different grave that of the omi alliance chairman adachi says that that's his duty as an upper rank omi executive ichiban quickly realizes what's happened the arakawa family defected years ago away from the tojo and are now part of the omi alliance arakawa is now the acting captain of the omi while ichiban was in prison the governor of tokyo began cracking down on the tojo he had a 3k plan keep them hungry keep them poor keep them out arakawa was working with the police and leaking them information to get the tojo taken down eventually with a lot of the officers arrested arakawa bribed the police to turn a blind eye while the omi swooped in and took over kamarocho ichiban still refuses to believe any of this he thinks that man must have just looked like arukawa and that adachi is some sort of undercover yakuza adachi says they're going to yokohama to conduct an investigation ichiban throws adachi's badge out the window causing them to stop and he runs away before he goes adachi warns him that kamarocho isn't the same there's no place for him there ichiban heads to the city finding the old arakawa offices abandoned at the cigarette shop he finds a man who's in the arakawa family and he confirms ichiban's worst fear they are a part of the omi adachi wasn't lying ichimon escapes to the champion district and runs into michio a woman who used to run a bar there she quit drinking and runs a health food cafe now michio doesn't have any information on the yakuza as they don't frequent health food cafes but ushio might the man that ichiban shook down for money is now a reporter on the yakuza when he finds ushio he tells ichiban that masato died three years after he went into prison this caused arakawa to snap and was probably the reason that he turned to the omi he tells ichiban not to return to shangri-la but ichiban doesn't listen ichiban finally realizes how much has changed as the place has been destroyed and abandoned adachi fills ichiban in on what happened to the place we already know that majima ran a dump truck into the place all the way back in the first yakuza game adachi finally reveals that he's looking into how arakawa got away with selling out the tojo he thinks that he must have paid off commissioner horanochi who adachi has his own grudge with the two decide to work together as adachi can track down the commissioner and ichiban can get to see arakawa again arakawa is having a big omi dinner tonight at an upscale chinese restaurant in high end tower it's the same place that they were supposed to have peking duck all those years ago and ichiban thinks that arakawa must be sending him some sort of message they can't just go barging in though because the dinner isn't until later that evening and ichiban has a hit out on him by the omi ichiban heads to meet up with adachi later that night but runs into a man named nick ogada the businessman is going to show ichiban how to use his phone so he can call adachi but ichiban has to protect him from some goons nick is a very successful businessman who will show up later in the distraction section adachi finally arrives and shows ichiban their place of attack the sewers ichiban wants adachi to come clean about why he wants the commissioner taken down but adachi will only tell him if ichiban comes clean about who killed suzumori ichiban doesn't and they head into the sewers in the sewers adachi joins our party adachi's default job or class is called detective it's very similar to ichiban's default job of freelancer they're both pretty ineffective and are greatly passed up by some of the jobs that we'll be allowed to use later in the game but since we don't have that option right now they'll have to make do our skill set is very simple at this point in the game only a few to choose from and beat down thugs with we have to make our way through the sewers thwarting attacks from dozens of enemies we eventually end up on the roof and have to jump across but a helicopter spots the two adachi flashes his badge and holds the cops off while ichiban heads inside ichiban confronts sawashiro ichiban is clearly pissed at sawashiro for turning traitor and becoming omi sawashiro doesn't want ichiban to interrupt arakawa as it's a big night for him so the two duke it out this is our first boss battle of the game we really don't have many skills at this point so it's very simple just keep pounding into the boss until he's dead one feature that i haven't mentioned yet is the button presses associated with skills most damage dealing skills can be boosted to allow for a better attack bonus when using them we have to time a button press either hitting triangle at the right time or mashing square to bump up our damage a bit i love features like this and the perfect guard mechanic it makes an otherwise autopilot kind of system really manual you have to actually pay attention and know what skills you're using at a certain point you just memorize the button presses and know what you need to do before you even use a skill ichiban bursts into the room to find arakawa dining with a number of omi officers acting captain do we have a problem here no nothing serious no need for you to worry boss in fact it's going as planned [Music] i'm sorry ichi you have to die ichiban wakes up the next day in a trash heap next to a homeless camp a bum tells him to go back to his life and not make trouble for him they were taking bets on whether he was dead or not and the homeless man tells him that he's in ijincho yokohama they found ichiban in a dumpster a few days ago and patched him up ichiban wants to stay with them because at this point he really is homeless he doesn't have shangri-la he doesn't have the arakawa family everything has been taken from him and he has nowhere to go they don't want him to stay because he'd just be competition for food ichiban collapses from his injuries when trying to leave and the man helps him back up the man finally introduces himself as nanba and he thinks that ichiban's name must be an alias ichiban's name literally translates to number one so we can see why it would be reasonable to think it was a joke namba takes ichiban out to look for some money he teaches us how to use a new mechanic around the city we can search vending machines and trash piles for cash for a good chunk of the game we won't really have much money at all and this becomes kind of necessary to get any sort of cash there's a low chance that we can get a gold plate out of these vending machines which can be sold for a hundred thousand yen it's not that low though i got kind of lucky this time around and got two pretty early on so i was set there will be much better ways to earn money later but for now we have to scrounge ichiban meets the elder of the group who doesn't want his money because he'd rather ichiban stay safe nanba gives ichiban some fish to keep him fed for the night the next day we're introduced to can collecting a way to get some more cash but it doesn't yield very much back at the camp the group are about to get shaken down by zhang jiang is a member of the yokohama liumeng a chinese triad that has ruled this area for a long time none behind ichiban as he doesn't have enough money to cover the fees that the liumeng are charging the homeless to live there the men eventually find ichiban and he decides to fight them because he would never pay up to people shaking down the homeless nanba decides to join in on the fight and he becomes our new second party member since adachi is gone nanba's default job is homeless guy and is actually pretty useful he has some healing spells and some high damage magic it's not my favorite that nanba can have but it does the job i also want to note the fantastic humor that's included in yakuza's new combat system of course the yakuza games have always had a lighter and outlandish style the rpg systems attacks don't take themselves too seriously and can get pretty creative nanba is a great example of this he has attacks that call pigeons to attack enemies he can spit fire by drinking alcohol and even take a power nap to recover health a lot of the skills in the game are like this and they're just so outlandish flashy and funny that it just works it really reminds me of something like these south park rpg games as those had similar systems based around humor though this one leans a little more to the side of sirius than that zhang and is lackey aren't too difficult to bring down with pretty low health and not a ton of damage to deal out but like i said we're still getting all of the systems in place so we won't see real challenge for a bit after we defeat them zhang vows to get back at ichiban and nanba they counter this though what are the guys going to do admit that they got beat up by homeless men they can't even report the incident to their superiors let alone bring a bunch of liumang men back to kick ass over pocket change after zhang leaves the elder tells ichiban to not do that again as it could get their camp disbanded ichiban asks nanba if the chinese mafia is really that powerful here yokohama is ruled by the aegean three three crime syndicates that though competing band together to keep the other syndicates out they form the great wall of muscle protecting yokohama from the likes of the tojo and the omi the syndicates are the yokohama liumang the setayuklan yakuza and a korean mafia it seems like the best place for ichiban to be dumped the only place in the country that the omi alliance couldn't touch ichiban is still weak after getting shot but finds a bloody 10 000 yen bill in his pocket this excites the other members of the camp but they soon realize it's a forgery no backside they get upset that ichiban brought forged money into the camp but they realized that if ichiban had it on him before he was shot it would have a hole in it whoever dumped him in yokohama must have slipped it into his pocket ichiban wants to get a job he doesn't want to stay in this place forever he decides to head over to hello work a local employment agency and get one namba decides to come with him he apparently used to be a nurse but won't tell ichiban how he ended up here once they get to the agency they find out they can't serve homeless men on the outside a man offers them a job to work at a local bar called harbor light for 5 000 yen they take it and after they leave we see the man as the director of hello work and he just wanted to give the men a chance the woman at harbor light hamako hired them to protect her bar apparently a local korean mafia called the comey jewel has been stealing her power hamako already cut the power lines that the mafia ran from her building and she's expecting retaliation nanba doesn't want to get involved as the comey jewel are incredibly dangerous and secretive but ichiban makes him a homeless man shows up to the bar the comey jewel paid him one million yen to smash up the bar but ichiban stops him and we have to fight the man is named matsuo and lives at the camp matsuo says that some woman in the komi jewel gave him his orders he shot out with arrows before running away ichiban stands out in the open telling the comey jewel in the shadows to steal electricity from somewhere else they shoot at him and graze his cheek but he stands anyways they back down and the two head back to the bar the two men are only paid 5 000 yen total for their work not each hamaco offers to have the men clean her restaurant tomorrow for the other 500 and they accept heading back to the camp the next day they find out the restaurant is actually a brothel ew while cleaning they hear protesters outside the group outside is called bleach japan their goal is to turn all of the gray areas white meaning they want to eliminate the parts of society that are illegal but that the police turn a blind eye to like prostitution the organization was started by rio aoki the man that began the 3k program to take down the tojo he's not involved anymore since he became governor but the movement carries on kumai the leader of the protest is calling out hamaco's brothel he demands that the broth will be closed he doesn't understand though these women have no other way to earn money and someone like kume could never understand what would drive someone to prostitution ichiban threatens to throw a bin full of dirty tissues onto the protesters heads which causes them to scatter hamaco tells the men that her girls are immigrants and have no legal way to work in the city bleach japan has been bugging them for years kume shows up later with some thugs and they want some food trying to out the place as not a real restaurant we have to fight the group and once they're defeated they run off hamako offers to let the two stay at her place if they do she'll get residence rights and the landlord couldn't evict the business ichiban will act as her live-in security guard while he's there the two move in and celebrate the roof over their heads while having a drink ichiban asks nanba how he got fired he was selling medicine on the black market he says it's not as simple as just finding another profession nan asks ichiban what he wanted to do as a kid and he admits he wanted to be a hero just like in dragon quest we see matsuo has been captured by the comey jewel and he begs for his life he's already messed things up beyond repair though and they put a bolt through his head adachi is sneaking into the brothel at night as he's tracked ichiban down the next morning he's introduced to nanba adachi escaped the meeting that night but got fired from his dmv job losing his pension he still wants ichiban to help him investigate the commissioner adachi finally reveals why he wants to take the man down 20 years ago an elderly couple were murdered by a robber the suspect was a man named kusumi who adachi had arrested previously for other crimes a witness came forward in the trial and gave kusumi an alibi but horonuchi wasn't willing to accept it they badgered the witness until he changed his story he did this because he was up for a promotion and a wrongful conviction would have taken that away kusumi was sentenced to 17 years in prison and hanged himself leaving behind a family adachi leaked the alibi to the press but hodonuchi covered up the story and got adachi pushed to the dmv ichiban and nanba are about to head out to hello work and adachi comes with them as he's unemployed now too on their way we find something that's about to drastically change the game moving forward up until this point yakuza 7 has been pretty rooted in reality it's been grounded other than the odd attacks that we can make during combat but this all changes when ichiban finds a bat stuck in the ground he's the only one that can remove it sword in the stone style he thinks he must be some kind of hero something else changes too when some thugs approach and we begin battle they transform into evil monsters but no one else can see it only ichiban this isn't a big reveal for some sort of real magic in the world it's even deeper than that we've begun to see the world through ichiban's eyes this idealized version of the life around him if you haven't picked up on it so far ichiban is very different from our previous protagonist kiryu kitty was much more of a stone wall he was strong rarely ever showed emotion and didn't take crap from anyone he was the picture of a perfect yakuza a dragon an unmovable object strong and silent ichiban is the opposite of that kind of he's positive uplifting a smile always on his face he chalks this up to the fact that he idealized the characters from the games like dragon quest as a child he's done this so much that he's become a character in one of those video games i remember when this game was announced and i was sure that ichiban would just be another kid of you the same character that was basically just a different name and look but he's not he's his own character and you can really see that rgg wanted to step out and take a new direction with this series a completely new main character with his own story and trail to blaze this also gives the game a real spirit that's an evolution of the one that it had before it's the spirit of classic jrpgs and their ideals mixed with the vicious difficult world of that yakuza that we've become familiar with with this new holy sword that ichiban has found his job has changed from freelancer to hero hero is actually my favorite job for ichiban it's one of the best in the game with tons of incredibly good skills to use and a great damage output as we level it up we get access to great aoe damage high single target damage heals buffs for parties attacks and even a skill called peerless resolve that will prevent us from taking death dealing damage the hero job is fantastic and is just a perfect all-rounder non benadachi are also both in the party now so we have three members total the group heads over to hello work meeting up with kanbe the director he can only give them jobs through unofficial channels because of their pasts he sends them to otohime land a soap land run by an eccentric owner when they get there they hear nonomia yelling at one of his workers on the phone because she called off due to her monthly visitor nan ben adachi want to leave but ichivon eventually persists and decides to help him find some new workers showing the man how to run the place right just then bleach japan shows up they've been protesting the place for days trying to take the soap land down and cause a domino effect ichiban offers to take the protesters out if it'll earn them a job kume is ranting and raving in the streets and eventually shows the group his permit to protest turns out kume is breaking some of his own rules having more protesters than he's allowed and technically being on otohime land's property he's also working in a gray zone telling him this gets him to move on and the group has their interview with nonomia he wants them to look for nanoha one of his top earners that's recently been skipping out on work he thinks she might be undercutting his profits and seeing men on her own time she doesn't have a permanent address though and might be at the pocket cafe they find her at the restaurant but they don't want to spook her before they have proof that she's undercutting the business a man in a suit shows up and adachi drops his phone in a plant to listen in on them nanoha gives the man 2 million yen with 3 million yen left to pay in 10 days she wants to see her father but the man says it's impossible ichiban goes to ask her what's going on but he gets into it with some thugs they lost the girl after the battle and follow the man she was talking to he leads them to a place called sunlight castle that they believe must be a retirement home but nanoha couldn't have been just paying her bill because she wouldn't have done that in a cafe in cash ichiban enters but they won't let him see the place unless he's finalized his contract with them they look up the place when they get back to the soap land to find it's a ridiculous entry price of 5 million yen nota mia says that it's possible she actually is paying for that place as the only thing she has in this world is her father and would do anything for him the group realizes that nonaemia really does care about the girls he employs and is trying to protect them not worrying so much about profits the group deduces that she must have gotten her father in there and now they're forcing her to make her payments before she can see the man they want to get into the place and rescue her father but the security would be too tight their best course of action is to have khan bay get them a job there so they can scope the place out kanbe can't get them jobs at the facility but he can get them jobs doing menial tasks nanba's past experience makes him perfect for a caretaker and adachi for security khanbe has a job for ichiban and a few days later he's the new janitor they think that nanoha's father must be in the incredibly expensive excellent room but they can't get in without a key card ichiban takes the fire escape to try and spy on a woman being taken to the excellent room the nurses take her there and tell her to say good night before closing the doors all we can hear is the screams of the woman as she's shut inside back at odohime land nanba says the woman that ichiban saw died that day the group thinks that sunlight castle might be killing their patients and refusing to write death reports to keep bringing in money from clients they figure out that the yakuza are also involved in the operation the setiuclan on staff the police must be paid off already so they can't go to them and they believe that the 10 days that nanoha had was the deadline before her father is killed that deadline ends tomorrow ichiban wants the house bonus if they complete the job which only comes out to about 3 000 yen the three head to adachi's favorite watering hole the survive bar much to our surprise a familiar face is running the bar the man is never named just going as bartender but this is clearly kashiwaki the upper rank yakuza that died in yakuza 3. while clearly he didn't die and is running a bar in yokohama the next day the group steals a key card and breaks into the excellent room stopping nanoha's father from being injected the group gets caught and has to fight some yakuza moonlighting as security the doctor tells him he was going to inject the man with potassium chloride a compound used for executions we finally meet the man that nanoha was giving money to yamato totsuka totsuka is the patriarch of the ryuto family and chief of headquarters in the city clan ichiban threatens to tell everyone what is happening here and we have to battle the men they go down pretty quick without dealing any real damage totsuka puts the building on lockdown but ichiban threatens to tell the set of you what's going on there they don't know about the operation and he agrees to take them to his headquarters once there we realize it's a big trap and we're assaulted we have to make our way through the place and it's pretty large i'll call this a dungeon for now because that's basically what it is but there are actual dungeons later in the game that we'll talk about the building is massive and we have to weave through the place we can find plenty of items in each dungeon and even get some pretty good gear to upgrade our characters silver safes can be unlocked to get especially good gear we can't save during these sections unless we find a save box which comes at certain checkpoints we can also recover health at recovery stations we get tossed around the place and the gang almost dies being thrown out of windows we eventually reach the chairman's office and ichiban tells them what's happened the man himself hoshino thinks ichiban is here to kill him he denies this and has the lieutenants search him for weapons they find the fake bill in ichiban's pocket and he tosses it off thinking it's toy money totsuka is about to have his pinky taken for the sunlight castle ordeal hoshino talks about the balance he's had to maintain between the egyn iii that balance is about to be disrupted he bought the sunlight castle building 30 years ago and gave it to totsuka to overlook but he could never have imagined that this is what he would have done with it totsuka tries to pass the whole thing off as euthanasia at the request of the patient's families hoshino banishes totsuka and tells ichiban that this is about honor and even though totsuka did wrong he has shamed the clan by breaking in ichiban reacts with amazement because he thought all of the old yakuza were gone he's glad to see someone still respects honor hoshino realizes ichiban used to be yakuza and ichiban tells him of arakawa and how even though he shot him he still aspires to be him takabe takes ichiban with him to speak with nanoha apparently totsuka told her that her father needed a life-saving operation takabe tells her that sunlight castle is going to be shut down and she has to find a new place for him to stay but in the meantime he'll be kept safe at the castle ichiban tells nanaha to quit her job now that she doesn't have to get so much money for her father she can go back to her white collar life she thanks them and leaves when the group heads back to otohime land to report the work finished they find nonomia hanged in the lobby at the funeral the group wonders why nonomia would have taken his own life they think that he must have been stressed out by what's been happening just then nanoha walks up and tells them that nonomia was trash and wasn't the kind of guy to kill himself we find out that this isn't nanoha but a woman named psycho nanoha's twin sister she left home when she was young and cut ties with her family she also worked for nonomia at a hostess club that he owned she talked to him a few days before he died finding out all about sunlight castle while on the phone she offered to help nonomia with the money that nanoha owed but he said that he had men working on it just then she heard someone break in and scream in chinese she figured that nonamia was killed and he didn't commit suicide when she talked to the police they ran off when she said that the men who broke in were saying lau ma adachi says that lao ma is a code name used for the upper ranks of the yokohama liumang a man by the name of akira mabuchi mabuchi's men must have killed nonomia and the police are probably in his pocket the only thing that doesn't make sense is why mabuchi who's in the liumeng would kill someone on the setiuclan turf possibly sparking a massive war it must have been important psycho reveals that she never got along with her father and sister and wishes nonomia wasn't such a jerk but he still didn't deserve to get his death brushed off like this he did tell her that the three men he hired could be trusted which is why she seeked them out they tell her that she won't have to investigate this alone psycho is now officially in our party she starts out with a default job of barmaid and like most other default jobs it's not very great she doesn't deal much damage and doesn't have a great amount of high powered skills but we'll switch her out later later that night the gang tries to find mabuchi's headquarters but he's keeping a pretty low profile his men have been known to hang out in restaurant row so the group heads there apparently the row and chinatown have had a long-standing feud and even mentioning chinatown could get them beat up ichiban tries to get information out of some of the locals but no one is willing to talk about the liu mang we get attacked by thugs and when we question them about mabuchi they bring in even more they eventually question the thugs further but no one will fess up they determine that they have to find a low-ranking member that will break ichiban thinks of zhang automatically the man that was shaking down the homeless camp he walks by at that moment and ichiban tries to follow him inside to a hostess club but it's members only psycho decides to get a job there so that she can refer the men in and get them inside psycho calls them later and invites them to the club the boys get in and adachi is over the moon about the women sayko is apparently in the vip room she eventually bursts out because zheng was trying to lick her armpit zheng recognizes ichiban and we have to battle him again this battle still isn't too difficult the game hasn't exactly ramped up its difficulty just yet we have four party members now though so we can battle pretty efficiently zhang agrees to come clean after we defeat him he doesn't exactly know mabuchi but only a few people call him lau ma most of the liu meng are third or fourth generation chinese and don't even speak the language lauma is very learned though and surrounds himself with very smart and upper-ranked individuals one thing he does know is that mabuchi invests in a lot of businesses including yokohama trading company they supply chinese restaurants with food and utensils ichiban figures they should get jobs there and try to find out more saiko heads back to the apartment with them officially a part of the group the next day they head to hello work khan bay is unsteady about giving them jobs at yokohama trading because their business is a bit underground ichiban explains the situation and he agrees he wants them to take on some small jobs while they wait for information and were officially introduced into the job system of yakuza 7. we can now officially switch our characters classes as long as we meet the corresponding requirements each job requires that certain requirements be met for ichiban this means things like his level and personality we can level up the different aspects of ichiban's personality by completing certain events around the city even certain choices we make in dialogue throughout the game can increase different aspects of our personality passion confidence charisma kindness intellect and style are the six areas we can improve these can be used to hire employees access gambling and pursue love interests but the biggest use is unlocking different jobs our party members don't have this requirement though their jobs are unlocked by increasing their level and bond something that we'll talk about more in a bit there's tons of different jobs in the game and each has its own set of unique skills and playstyle as we level up jobs we can unlock certain abilities that we'll carry across even if we switch characters jobs each job level increased will also give characters a permanent stat boost that carries over as well so maxing out all of the jobs is a must to getting the characters as strong as possible like i said there's a ton of jobs though and i won't talk about everyone here i'll just talk about my favored loadout for each party member my favorite job for ichiban was always the hero role that he's given early on in the story it's a great class that's well-rounded and has tons of solutions to fit every situation nadachi does very well with the enforcer role this is more of a tank and gives adachi a ton of health as well as resistance this doesn't mean that he can't dish it out though one of his abilities paralysis prongs is incredibly useful and can do a ton of damage to single target enemies nanba is great as the musician which is a hybrid healer and damage dealer the skarmy ability does great area damage and once he's leveled up it can wipe out foes in this role he uses a guitar as a weapon and can increase his voltage meter to make skills more effective lastly sayko seemed the best in her idol role this sees her transforming into a singer before our very eyes she effectively becomes a white mage and can heal the party she can also greatly debuff and charm enemies which comes in useful when facing a crowd there's a ton more jobs like chef fortune teller foreman breaker devil rocker matriarch and night queen but i didn't use those nearly as much i will say though even though i didn't use them the variety of jobs and intricate nature of each is incredibly welcomed each job feels like their own they all feel special in different ways and it's fantastic the group gets a call to head to the warehouse and the boys move cargo while psycho works the front desk the group starts breaking open crates when no one is looking and finds a shipment of blank suspicious looking paper before being told to get back to work psycho is ordered to pay the money in the safe to a sales rep that gives invoices the money is equal to 8 million yen they have pretty strict security though so they warn her to not try anything back at otohime land saiko reveals that the prices yokohama trading is charging are fishy no pun intended they sell shark fins at 10 000 yen and buy them at 10 000 yen meaning this shouldn't be turning a profit but they are they can't really pin them on anything yet but they're close to something the group goes out for drinks and the next day are woken up by bleach japan kumei is mocking the deceased nonomiya and eventually psycho slaps him ichiban says that isn't good enough and socks the guy in the face the group was waiting for a fight and gets out weapons and we have to bring them down ichiban and code defeat the group and they run off after they get home from work saiko seems to be really happy with nanba and he thinks she might be into him ichiban is afraid that they're getting her in too deep into dangerous territory adachi tells him not to worry as she seems a lot happier the next day the foreman has to go get money from the bank to make payments as the safe is out ichiban sees him lift the crate of blank papers and come back with payment when the four regroup ichiban reveals that he believes they have a printing press and are making fake bills this must be part of some money laundering scheme and even turning a great profit for yokohama trading when they're spending nothing the group decides to snag one of the bills while they're at work the next day psycho and ichiban had to go get supplies for dinner the two have a heart to heart and ichiban opens up about his past he says being a yakuza wasn't that hard it's different for everyone psycho says that her past itself wouldn't have been strong enough to deal with this but it's easier with friends the next day saiko slips ichiban a fake bill but when nanba drops some crates ichiban's bill falls out the group is outed and have to fight off workers who try to kill them ichiban almost gets run over by a fork truck and the place is covered in gasoline the group barely escapes before the place blows we then see a white-haired man watching in the distance the group awakens chained up in some sort of torture chamber mabuchi is standing over them they're finally able to put a face to a name he records ichiban and asks him why he's there ichiban explains that they know about the forgery business and that he killed nonomia mabuchi stops recording and thanks ichiban for giving him all the evidence he needs to prove the setiuclan is breaking their truce this is huge because it could start a massive war and get very out of control before mabuchi leaves he tells them that he did kill nonomia a foreman arrives ready to slice the group into pieces and send it to the sediu clan before they can do so the white-haired man arrives and frees ichiban before leaving because all of our equipment has been taken we're reduced back to the freelancer job for this battle we have to defeat the men and free our friends they think the white-haired guy has to be part of the comey jewel but they aren't sure why they would be getting involved in this we get our gear back and have to make our way out this place is incredibly huge and is our first true dungeon of the game there's four levels to the place with all kinds of equipment and items to find along the way one thing i should note is that there's a very important skill we can receive as ichiban the demolished skill can only be obtained by switching to the foreman job this skill will let us break down barriers around town or in dungeons giving us access to secret places it's incredibly important and is a must for exploring making our way to the end we have to fight an excavator the group doesn't know what to do so they just decide to attack it it's weak to electrical attacks but because the thing can't be picked up we can't use adachi's paralysis prongs on it which is a huge pain the excavator can be pretty tough and does a ton of damage i also just love that we're fighting heavy machinery it's so great and really plays on the classic huge boss trope from rpgs these dungeons also work really well and crawling through the sewers is another modernization of the classic tomb crawlers that we see in older jrpgs when the group gets to the surface they head to hamaco's place to call chairman hoshino about what mabuchi is planning by the time he calls it's too late two sedu members were killed and takabe is already seeking vengeance against chairman hoshino's wishes if takabe attacks zhao the head of the liu mang it'll all be over ichiban realizes that he played into mabuchi's hand killing nonomia was meant to draw retaliation ichiban doing something about it gave him a reason to start a war which was what he wanted in the first place the only thing they can do now is try to stop takabe before he does something bad they head to restaurant row and we have to fight our way through the alleyways and eventually find takabe making a move on the headquarters takabe doesn't care that the thing was a setup and wants vengeance regardless he aims a gun at ichiban but he knows he won't shoot as killing an unarmed civilian would be catastrophic for the setius reputation this eventually ends in a duel we have to fight takabe and his tons of goons which aren't too difficult i always get excited when i'm up against plenty of foes because the most satisfying thing in this game is using an area attack and wiping out tons at once zhao shows up after the fight and shows ichiban the edited video you're the star in it aren't you i can believe the dumb part i'm told you tried to steal this i know you're with the cereal clan yeah you're damn straight he wants an explanation and he'll kill takabe if he doesn't get it he tells zhao what happened and he half accepts it he won't kill takabi now but he needs concrete proof that mabuchi caused all of this he decides that the only place they can go to get good information is the comey jewel themselves zhao takes takabe as a hostage and tells ichibani has to figure out the truth oh and if he leaves town he'll kill everyone he knows before we get further into the game we should probably talk about the survive bar and its usage as a hideout there are a ton of mechanics surrounding the bar this bar really serves as the meet up point and our base of operations here we can take a load off and relax but that's not all throughout the game by engaging in battles and doing side activities with our party members or chatting with them while exploring the city we'll gain bond with them this increases their bond level and once it hits max for that level we can have a chat with them at the bar to level them up during each chat we see a bit more of each character's story we find more out about them as a person and the troubles they're currently dealing with each bond level gained also makes the character gain more experience when they aren't in the party we can only have four party members at a time so inevitably some people are going to be left out when they aren't in the active party they gain less experience but if their bond level is at its highest this penalty is lowered they can also gain tag team skills through this process making combat just a bit easier it's a great system that really lets us get to know each character in our party and also replicates the same feeling that the bar chat minigame from yakuza 6 did at survive bar we can also make and grow our own food there are planters outside and all over the city where we can plant seeds and gather provisions these can be turned into cashiwagi to craft food that we can take on our journey and heal our party in combat one of the funnest mechanics that the bar has though are the cds we can change the music that plays in the bar by putting a cd in the stereo cds can be gathered by taking part in all of the different mini games across town the special part is a lot of these tracks are from other classic sega games we can hear songs from persona sonic and one of my favorite video game songs ever created the survive bar overall is just an incredibly fantastic mechanic it serves as a place to take a load off in between story missions to get to know your party to kick back and relax it feels like we're genuinely doing what the characters would be doing in their down time venting their issues having a little fun and preparing for the next big thing it's great the group decides to head to the comey jewel building and when they get there they find a woman wearing sunglasses she already knows everything about why they're there and leads them back to the hideout when they get inside they see huge tangles of power cables this is why people call them the spider web the woman ditches the group and some comey jewel show up to attack we have to make our way through this dilapidated building across rooftops and even have to play hide and seek with some comey jewel members eventually we reach the heart of the comey jewel and find the white-haired man again the man introduces himself as none other than jungi han i know what you're wondering how the hell did han come back after getting shot in the head but i promise the explanation will come and it's not as ridiculous as you'd expect but also just as ridiculous as you'd expect pond was testing them and they passed he invites them in and we see a huge setup in the next room filled with screens and cameras watching the city very similar to a certain florist and kamarocho the komi jewel are the newest and weakest in strength of the ejin 3. they use their technology secrets and money to get an edge in ichiban asks if they've already killed mabuchi and han says no he then shows a video of mabuchi and his goons breaking into otohime land concrete evidence that mabuchi was the culprit before he can hand the tape over he has something to show the group in the next room is a high-tech machine using blazers and equipment to print fake money this is even more advanced than mabuchi's operation his is like toy money compared to the comey jewels everyone is in on the operation and mabuchi provides the special paper that they use comprised of a rare element that lets the operation go smoothly zhao turns a blind eye to the whole thing the woman from before is then revealed to be the leader of the comey jewel song hui the secret to how they make the bills is a closely guarded one no one can know how the sausage is made because that could lead the police to be able to figure out how to catch them song hui wants to know how ichiban came across a misprint that should have been destroyed she and han start aiming guns at him and ichiban gives the truth he genuinely doesn't know where it came from eventually she says she figured ichiban was clueless but doesn't think nanba is nanba showed up in the city six months ago and has had a particular interest in the comey jewel building finally he reveals he's been looking for his brother shoiichi acaba his brother went missing investigating money laundering in the city as a freelance journalist nanba got a letter from him before he disappeared and it mentioned that the koreans were watching him he decided to integrate with the homeless to stay in the shadows and he never got any leads until he met ichiban nanba thought ichiban would know more but he didn't and he considered cutting ties with the group he apologizes for leading them on and song hui tases him ichiban begs her to let nanba go but she says he shouldn't consider him a friend after all of the lies he told them ichiban says that he wouldn't be alive if it weren't for nanba so he can't fault him for wanting to find his family when han draws his guns ichiban wrestles with him and adachi disarms seong hui the woman flees while we go to battle with joon gee he's nothing too crazy but this is where the battles start to go up a bit in difficulty he does a ton of damage with his guns but we can easily heal through it with sayko in our party we're down to only three now with nanba incapacitated during the escape ichiban tells nanba to make a run for it as he's the only one really in danger he leaves and seong hui says she won't let him leave the city alive if their secret gets out it could mean the end for the truce between the eg and 3. ichiban doesn't think nambo will leak any information but seong hui says it isn't her call to make she tells the group to meet her at the high end tower in chinatown at 2 am and she'll show them who really controls non-bus fate the group heads back to the camp to find out if namba left behind any clues to where he went they find a laptop that had a draft of shoeichi's article it's detailing rumors that point to the chair of the citizens liberal party named yutaka ogikubo ogikubo is a very powerful politician and even the prime minister follows his orders the article would have been just slander though as no evidence was included just rumors the group has regrets that they didn't notice namba's past sooner but they head to high end tower to find out the truth when they arrive han introduces them to the important folk waiting for them the heads of the e gene iii song hui zhao and chairman hoshino ichiban is surprised that the group are meeting considering they're all on the brink of war they all understand that they have to meet though to keep things from escalating ichiban is angry that they're all so calm when people are out there being killed we get a bit of a history lesson after the war black markets sprung up and the setiuclan was formed soon after two factions warred for control of chinatown and the losing faction formed the liumeng and moved on to eugene show this created a conflict between the setiu and the liumeng all three groups are involved in the money printing scheme the liumeng gets the paper the comey jewel prints it and the setiu oversees the operations ichiban can't believe that the three are on good terms and is sick of everything he's been through they tell him this is the way it has to be the man behind everything is ogie kubo he was the one who started the operations after the war to bring an end to the conflict between the setiu and the liumeng he gave each faction a part in the operation so they would all be dependent on each other ogikubo never gave them any profits only funneled the money back into the police he used this influence to give the liumang a place of operations that the setiu couldn't touch the komi jewel just used to be an offshoot of the jinguan mafia seong hui subtly slips in that jungie han is just a body double of one of the leaders explaining how he's still alive technically ogiekubo eventually gave them a piece of the operation when they were warring with the liumeng in the 80s and they were entrusted with the secrets of the city making sure no one learned of what the three were doing ichiban wants to know why they were called here nanba is their enemy and if the information he has gets out the great wall protecting the city will come crashing down this is also bad for ichiban because that means the omi alliance will swoop in and he can't have that hoshino offers to tell ichiban where the fake bill is from if he hands over nanba but ichiban refuses they already have assassins out looking for him so if ichiban does nothing then namba will die either way so it's in his best interest to find him jungie has a lead on where he might be and the group heads out han thinks that nambo would be with bleach japan as he has to hide out with someone who isn't connected to the eg3 their headquarters are in the hakurio building inside they find kume talking with the director of bleach japan hajima ogasawata he's in town to find out about the egg 3's counterfeit operations revealing that nanba told them everything ichiban warns them to get out of town as assassins will be on their tail soon ogasawara says that their associates will protect them and they summon mabuchi ogasawara and nanba leave with the latter man declaring that he'll find his brother no matter what it takes we have to fight mabuchi here who is a pretty tough battle his attacks with his bladed weapon are strong dealing a lot of damage he powers himself up in a heat mode and sweeps the battlefield with his weapon at range eventually we take him down and mabuchi is impressed apparently mabuchi killed nonomiya at the order of ogasawara mabuchi turned on the aegean iii to create a crack in the wall and make way for an invasion the true people backing bleach japan are none other than the omi alliance mabuchi is trying to do what arakawa did in kamurocho make way for the omi and get a cushy spot in the process ichiban knocks the man out and nanba and kume step out of the back room nanba tells them that the invasion will be tomorrow and there is nothing they can do about it nanba has completely turned at this point and we're left to wonder whether he was ever being true at all was his friendship just a farce the whole time to get more information on his brother did he truly become friends with these people but just show his true colors as a two-face or is it some combination of the two we aren't sure but nanba doesn't respond to any of their appeals and leaves the group decides to look for clues before they leave ichiban sees a picture on the wall of ogassawara shaking hands with the governor of tokyo leo aoki ichiban identifies him by his true name the man that's supposed to be dead masato arakawa aoki answers his phone in his office a call from mogasawara who asks if he can borrow some men from kansai for the operation to take down yokohama he obliges the group thinks that ichiban's suspicions might just be a coincidence aoki was a shut-in until he was 20 and he left the country to pursue schooling in america he met ogasawara there and they returned to japan to start bleach japan adachi believes that aoki is actually masato it would explain how the police started taking down officers with aoki's 3k plan they would have needed an insider and the perfect one would be arakawa this also explains why arakawa defected he wasn't switching his loyalty to the omi he was prioritizing his son ichiban doesn't think that's arakawa's style he wonders how aoki would have covered up his past life as masato adachi says that it's possible to create a new identity and the arakawa family could have leaked a fake story about masato's death to give his son a new start while looking online ichiban wonders how aoki would have gotten his legs to work again adachi believes that he could have gotten a procedure done in america they have access to technologies that japan won't authorize the picture also sees aoki walking by horanochi who was there the night that ichiban was at the hostess club with masato the group heads to bed for the night as kashiwagi offers them a room upstairs above the survive bar hamako calls in the morning and tells ichiban that totsuka is out searching for him totsuka is threatening hamako when they arrive he says that the cetiuclan and other members aren't happy about the news that their struggles are all for a futile counterfeiting operation bleach japan has been spreading the information all over town totsuko wants to seize the operation for himself and gain control of the clan we defeat him like the goon that he is and ichiban tells him he doesn't have it in him to control the sidio zhao calls them to tell them that bleach japan has started a huge protest at the comey jewel offices with some omi alliance members undercover to try and destroy the counterfeiting machines he wants ichiban to stop it because the eg3 are all preoccupied with coup attempts within their organizations zhao even offers to forget about nanba if ichiban can handle bleach japan they find kumei who is protesting with some secret omi alliance members ichiban mocks their accents and we have to battle them they go down easy and ichiban steals their signs so the group can blend in with the protesters the group are trying to break down the barricade at the comey jewel offices with a wrecking ball we have to fight some of the protesters and the guy manning the wrecking ball an omi man by the name of ishioda tries to hit them adachi says he was at the dinner where ichiban was shot we have to fight the wrecking ball and it isn't really that bad i used adachi's abilities to keep it focused on him and dealt big damage when i could the attacks hit hard but adachi could take the hits and psycho could heal them the wrecking ball quits when ishiota tries to kill the party and they all get away adachi says that's one of the three lieutenants in arakawa's ranks the other two are sawashiro who we've already met and yosuke tendo a former boxer who's one of arakawa's favorites jungi calls and tells ichiban he's impressed with his battle prowess fighting a wrecking ball and all he invites them over to a local restaurant as he has a gift for the group when they get to the restaurant it's revealed to be a secret entrance into the comey jewel inside it's revealed that the operations are to be destroyed to cover up the evidence of ogi kuba's involvement the comey jewel owes them that much for funding this operation and giving them a place to prosper they have a few minutes before the equipment is destroyed and ichiban and ko has to fend off the omi while the equipment is blown up nanba ogasawara and ishiota all show up ready to get the evidence they need ishiota is surprised that ichiban is still alive after being shot that night nanba begs ichiban to move so they can get the evidence they need but he refuses we have to fight ishiota and nanba here it's not a bad fight if nanba can be paralyzed or charmed early as he's a threat with his fire abilities ishiota is a pain though and deals a ton of damage with his guns eventually they're defeated and song hui and han returned to capture ogasawara nanba is crestfallen as he sees the evidence that might have led him to his brother destroyed all of this is gonna be lost to history now all the counterfeit bills and my brother you had to wait until the very end to stab me in the back namba i wish i could have saved something that would have led you to your brother but your life was on the line man shut up if you ask me number you have very good friends you call them friends song hui decides to give namba the truth his brother is alive and well he came close to finding out their operation but they didn't want to kill a man that had that much talent she's telling them all this because she was impressed with their group's efforts thus far the group brings ogasawara to the homeless camp which the elder is not happy about they have to be out by morning and they begin their interrogations nanba left to go find his brother and the group wonders if he'll come back at all but that's up to him i really like the whole nanba arc in this game having namba be introduced and become a really integral part of your group is really well done he was one of my favorite characters when i started playing the game but about halfway through he's ripped out of the party this makes your party feel weaker without him because you're running around with only three members this reflects the emotions that ichiban and ko are feeling as well weaker without a friend ogasawara met aoki 20 years ago when he had already dropped his life as an arakawa ogasawara didn't realize how rich or powerful aoki was until they returned to japan but aoki always wanted more aoki didn't want the background power he wanted to be loved by the people to gain the validation of tokyo he wanted to control the finances which is why he became governor of tokyo and he chose ogasawara and bleached japan to help his path there aoki was truly the one behind bleach japan it was his idea and he used it as a platform for his campaign ogasawara wonders why ichiban doesn't just let him talk to aoki so he can get him back in the yarkawa clan it's complicated but at this point ichiban is well past that he doesn't want to become a part of the yomi alliance that would mean betraying everything he stood for he also doesn't care about the politics here he just wants to find out who killed nonomia aoki slowly used his influence over time to gain power and office and with the help of the arakawa family the elections were basically rigged he launched the 3k plan and replaced the tojo with the omi people were happy to see the yakuza pushed out and it didn't even matter at that point that they were replaced with more yakuza after the tojo fell smaller gangs increased and crime was on the rise this caused the police to need some sort of presence which is why they turned a blind eye to the omi ogasawara reveals that horannucci is just a puppet aoki's whole goal with yokohama was to find out ogie kubo's secret he wanted more power and the only person that wouldn't stand down was ogie kubo this is why he broke the great wall and pushed into eugene show song hui says that they basically handed the city to the omi and aoki on a platter with no great wall to stop them they'll take over quickly just then some omi arrive and we have to fight ogasawara gets away during the battle and song hui gets a call from hoshino she tells him that their surveillance system is gone apparently the setiu have stopped their own coup but zhao is nowhere to be found the plan is to go and rescue him because if they're going to stop the omi they need everyone on the same page namba returns and tries to convince the group to leave zhao and eugene show entirely he doesn't want them getting caught up in something too dangerous that they can't handle but at this point things have become personal for ichiban if aoki really caused all of this and he is masato then ichiban has one huge bone to pick the man was basically like his brother he took care of him all that time and he has to know what really happened non believes because he decides he doesn't want to be involved right now song hui decides to stay out of the conflict as she needs to regroup the comey jewel since they're so damaged she sends han with the group though as ichiban has helped them immensely han tells them that zhao was last seen at his restaurant at this point han joins our party and he is easily one of my favorites in the whole game his default job hitman is super good it has a massive variation of different attacks he can do physical damage gun damage knife damage and even poison his area attacks are some of the best you can get the only downside is that he has low health so in big boss battles he can die pretty easy arriving at restaurant row zhang is there to stop us mabuchi has placed bounties on everyone's heads and he's there to collect his battle is still pretty simple as he's always going to be just a weak underling zhang tells us that zhao is being tortured by mabuchi in his restaurant right now we have to go save him and on the way we fight a bunch more enemies inside the restaurant they have a live tiger locked away and unfortunately we can't defeat the manager before he releases the thing on us this one's a pretty difficult fight the tigers attacks do big damage and they mostly give us bleed which damages each round this is also another character we can't use paralysis prongs on i'm not sure why this is a thing but there's a few skills in the game that you just can't use in boss battles i'm not sure if it's because the team just couldn't realistically animate a tiger getting picked up by a cable prod or what it's still really annoying though either way in any circumstance fighting tigers is awesome and feels very yakuza we beat the tiger and head upstairs to find mabuchi ishioda tendo and the other omi men we finally see tendo the other lieutenant of arakawas we have to fight mabuchi and his men which is pretty similar to the previous fight he's not that strong we just have to pick and choose our attacks and not hit him when he's countering tendo doesn't want to fight ichiban today and promises to see him soon ishiota is next up and the group is exhausted but there's a surprise in store when nanba shows back up to help he's back for good and he's come with a new ability a huge fire attack that does area damage this fight isn't great because even though it's good for the story you're forced to switch to using nanba instead of psycho for the fight which means that my dedicated healer was now gone sure ichiban and nanba can do some healing but it isn't nearly as effective as psycho's idol job ishiota goes down and nanba is welcomed back with open arms you saved my ass again how many times does that make no let's stop keeping track i have to but hey what's your plan now huh i mean as long as you're here you want to help me out a little bit longer i need all the help i can get right now man but what i really need are friends like you at my side [Music] hey man huh after everything i did to you guys the selfishness i was [Music] you'd still call me your friend yeah nanba thanks the comey jewel because his brother said he was well taken care of zhao stumbles into the room and he escaped with help but he wants to speak to ichiban alone zhao was saved by someone in the omi and the man reveals himself to be mitsuo ichiban's old friend this was a big reveal when i originally played yakuza 7 because i had completely forgotten about mitsuo by this point in the game mitsuo can't talk for long because he'll be executed if he's seen he only gives the warning that arukawa is close to his endgame mitsuho leaves and the group heads out with zhao outside he tells ichibani plans to step down from the liumang mabuchi having wrecked the organization in his coup he's going to give the reigns to seong hui because the aegean 3 have to look out for each other the group heads to hoshino and he says that a lot of his men are defecting to the omi the setiuklan will quickly be wiped out aoki is going to smear ogi kubo's name for the counterfeiting operation and take his position with that done he basically has the power in the country to elect whoever he wants hoshino believes that aoki will dissolve parliament with this power aoki is now showing this same plan to the prime minister and blackmailing him with ogikubo's crimes the prime minister tries to fight it but can't hoshino finally tells ichiban where the fake bill must have come from arakawa himself he believes he placed it there and dropped ichiban and yokohama on purpose he wanted ichiban to use the bill as a letter of introduction to hoshino because only he would know what it meant ichiban wants to know how hoshino knows arakawa and toshino says he will reveal that at high end tower the next day at the bar nanba tells ichibani's been thinking he believes that the elder of the homeless camp must have had a reason to get nan but to save ichiban he doesn't think any of this is chance the elder tells ichiban that they've always had a deal with the arakawa family since the 80s they drop off bodies here and the homeless dispose of them the other rule is that if the person is alive they are supposed to save them and pretend they died sending them on their way the elder isn't sure what this is for but it must have been used to fake people's deaths in the event they got into too much trouble this is why he saved ichiban ichiban remembers the night he got shot and realizes that arakawa said something else i'm sorry you have to die [Music] i'm counting on you ichi ichiban now thinks that maybe arakawa had to shoot him that night to save face in front of the omi that night hoshino explains how he met arakawa when they started their counterfeiting operation they had to use smugglers to bring the bills to where they needed to go one of them was named toshio arakawa masumi's father he lost 100 million yen in a suitcase and he had to pay for it hoshino himself carried out the hit and realized that masumi was there to find his father dead they realized later that arakawa's mother was the one that took the money arakawa's theater troop disbanded and he became a drifter he eventually joined the low-ranking hikawa family and was put on disposal duty which was how he became friends with the homeless there while in eugene show he used his time to try and find his father's killer hoshino eventually received an invitation to high-end tower from arakawa and decided that there was no good way to die as a yakuza so he might as well let a child get revenge for his father's murder they met at the tower and hoshino explained everything but arakawa decided not to kill him obviously in 1984 the 10 000 yen bills were changed in the country and hoshino sent arakawa a new batch of counterfeit bills with the backs blank he did this because of arakawa's mercy if he killed hoshino the eg3 would have never survived it also forced toshino to live up to arakawa's ideal because if he didn't he knew arakawa could take those bills and destroy their operation he wrote a message on the bill neither justice nor mercy should tip the scale hoshino truly believes that the bill was a message to ichiban that he's still a part of the family this renews ichiban's faith in arakawa oshino asks if ichiban is arakawa's son but he says no and toshino states that arakawa must be proud to have such loyal men in his ranks ichiban has gone through a lot the only father he had was arakawa and he did everything for him he even went to prison to make sure the family was kept around and he was happy to do it he got three years added to his sentence because people were talking bad about the family when he gets out he feels scorned when arakawa doesn't want to see him and shoots him after this he's fully in denial he can't believe that arakawa would do that to him but now realizing that it was all for a purpose for a reason has to renew ichiban's sense of security and determination okie kubo has now stepped down because of illness and the prime minister has dissolved the parliament causing entirely new elections to take place aoki goes to the hospital to flaunt his win in front of ogikubo and throw it in his face xiao comes to the bar to check on the group and also ask for a place to stay since he can't live in the restaurant anymore jungi is planning on rebuilding the comey jewels surveillance systems but it will take some time bleach japan is now more popular than ever after the comey jewel raid and ogasawara was found dead in the fire the omi turning him into a martyr for the cause han thinks they should start looking for a different place to stay because bleach japan will come for them soon zhao has officially joined the party he isn't too bad but definitely isn't one of my favorites his default job is gangster and this is basically a debuff based class he can't do a ton of damage but he can put effects on enemies very easily it's a much more strategy based class not meant for barreling through the competition ichiban wants to stay because he wants to see what mitsuo and arakawa have planned when we get outside the threats in the area have been increased yakuza 7 is an odd little mechanic that i barely ever noticed this is called the threat level and it's right above the minimap each area has a different threat level and this determines the level of the enemies in any given area because of the recent events the enemies wandering around the streets have now been upgraded effectively increasing their level as we have increased throughout the story like i said though i never really got into a place where i had a hard time completing a street encounter hamako calls ichiban over to clean up some trash we find out that she's sold her building and all of her girls have quit bleach japan has opened up shelters in town to give working girls a place to live and stay while they get jobs they're going to turn hamaco's building into one of these shelters and she'll be running it apparently this is all aoki's idea and ichiban thinks he's just fishing for votes but he won't actually follow through aoki is going to be at ogasawara's funeral in town and the group heads over to try and get in but their denied entrance aoki gives some crocodile tears at the funeral and we have to get to him when he leaves the party wants to cut him off by getting to his car so we have to search for an underground parking lot we use a secret elevator to get inside and security guards spot us before we can reach aoki after we defeat the guards one of the omi men hits ichiban in the face aoki's van swings back and we see the man face to face he tells ichiban secretly to meet him at otohime land tonight alone he tells the group and they don't think it's a good idea but he intends to honor that when we meet aoki he begins to tell ichiban how this all happened he got a lung transplant in the u.s but because he had a yuck as a father he had to erase his name to get what he wanted ichiban isn't happy with who aoki has become and tells him as much aoki had to have ogaswara killed it was for the greater good it's the same thing that arakawa did to him years ago ichiban thinks that this was to protect the family but aoki believes saurshiro wouldn't have been arrested anyways that night when masato left ichiban the drugs that enabled him to walk started to wear off he was struggling to crawl across the streets when suzumori came across him he started berating misato because he thought he was just some drunk eventually masato pulled a gun on him and shot him sawashiro never killed the man it was masato ichiban still trusts zarakawa no matter what aoki tells him to stay away from him and his father and ichiban says that aoki has to pull his operation out of eugene show he reveals that the shelters are actually a way to round up the undesirables in japan and have them deported aoki leaves and sawashiro shows up we have to escape through the streets and fight off three huge groups of enemies in the parking lot our friends saving us along the way hamako finds them and tells them she can't get in contact with any of her girls ichiban breaks the bad news that they've probably been deported it really seems like the city is breaking apart everything is falling down and they have no control the group wants to take jungie's advice and just run for it but ichiban gives them some resolve this is the place they call home and they can't just leave it to rot they have to try and save it ichiban meets with the eugene 3 who discussed that kume has recently announced his running for parliament with aoki's blessing he's basically a shun and the whole country will be under aoki's thumb very soon hoshino and songhui are ready to give up but zhao and ichiban win them over the main suggestion is that they get a new candidate to run against kume and win the election this will be tough though as they'll have to find someone to beat him the other problem is that they need 3 million yen as a deposit to enter a new candidate so this is our next task to get 3 million yen and this happens right at the beginning of chapter 12 near the end of the story chapter 12 has two really big road blocks in them points that really break up the flow of the story everything thus far has been pretty smooth but chapter 12 is where it gets really rocky it takes quite a bit of time to reliably get 3 million yen mostly because we don't have much money in this entry i wasn't really spending much money at all so far outside of buying necessary equipment and i still only had 200 000 yen the game does help you a bit by giving you two items from a couple boss fights before this point in the story these items can be sold at the pawn shop for 1.5 million yen which gets you over halfway to your goal the best way to make some quick money at this point in the game is to play the business management mini-game i'm not going to talk about the intricacies of the mini-game just yet but it takes a while to get it to the point where you're reliably making money at the start it takes a while to even get a hundred thousand yen once you have it cooking it'll rake in millions every 15 minutes or so but it takes a bit to get there because this money grind is basically necessary i really think it railroads you and breaks down the story of the game i love the management mini-game in general but i didn't love being forced to play it to advance the story i'll talk about the second roadblock when we get there shortly eventually we get a call from mitsuo arakawa is going to sotonbori and needs ichiban ichiban tells his friends and they're reluctant to go thinking it's a trap but they eventually trust him he gives the money to hoshino before they leave oshino hasn't found a candidate for the political race yet but he's still looking apparently masaru watase the man heavily featured in yakuza 5 is being released from prison and arakawa is awaiting his return arakawa and mutasa don't know each other so the meeting is very important for him hoshino tells ichiban to be careful because he could get into trouble in sotonbori aoki is worried about arakawa and watase meeting he thinks it might be part of some power play by his father to get ahead on the inevitable death of the current omi chairman he sends tendo to sotonbori to make sure everything goes okay ichiban is nervous about what might happen with arakawa especially hearing that tensions are growing with people thinking arakawa might start a war with watase adachi suggests that they head to the omi hq now and make sure he's there to protect arakawa if a war breaks out ichiban calls mitsuo when they get there and he wants ichiban to wait so he can set up a meeting with arakawa ichiban can't wait and plans to disguise himself as a caterer to get inside mitsuho finally caves and tells him that arukawa is in a secret room called the dragon chamber meeting with three guests we have to sneak into the event avoiding enemies in the hallways we can't get caught because the battle will cause too much commotion eventually some omi guards see us before we can get into the room and we defeat them the group tries to hide the bodies of the men but the people inside have heard and it's someone very familiar let's get going [Laughter] intruders sound the alarm is in that the line [Music] goro majima is back i remember being so excited at this introduction it's incredibly fantastic majima's english dub voice is done by matt mercer and he does a fantastic job as the mad dog his sworn brother sajima is right beside him as well our party doesn't know these guys though and have only heard stories of them huge legends of the tojo but they aren't sure why they're at the omi hq majima promises to tell them but only if they win a fight well some series regulars have returned and that's all fun and good but we have another problem we have to actually fight them this is where our second roadblock of the game comes into play this battle the game decides to take a huge spike in difficulty all of a sudden and this battle is pretty rough the first thing i want to get out of the way is that i think this battle should be rough thematically and for the characters i don't think our brand new characters should just be able to sweep the floor with the likes of majima and saijima like it's nothing these two are huge legends of the tojo clan that have years of history battling some of the greatest men the yakuza have ever known and coming out on top so no an ex-cop a hitman a hostess and an ex yakuza shouldn't be able to just defeat them easily that being said the game doesn't set us up very well for this encounter on this playthrough i hadn't done any grinding at all i just played through the story normally without doing much side stuff whatsoever i hadn't died once and honestly hadn't really come close in any of the story battles but majimo was wiping the floor with my party most of the reason is because majima can attack more than once per turn and he also summons doppelgangers after we take out about 20 percent of his health these doppelgangers can all attack multiple times per turn which can knock out party members easily the only solution to this problem is to go and grind leveling up a bit and coming back to fight him later luckily as we entered sotenbori we unlocked the sotenbori battle arena which is an okay grinding spot but isn't the best in the game so it can still be a little slow i spent about 3 hours grinding my characters up to level 47 before i got this fight to work and even then it was not easy at all i had to heavily prepare with health items and some damage items that just barely saw me making it through the battle after we take out majima's doppelgangers and get him down to 50 health saijima jumps into battle he almost immediately does an attack called blade kill which can only be done when both him and majima are on the battlefield it specifically targets ichiban and can instantly kill him if you don't have a bunch of health or the peerless resolve skill the goal here is to kill majima as quick as possible so that saijima can't do this when majima goes down we just have to deal with saijimo which isn't difficult at all but it's incredibly slow because he has so much health and resists everything i really don't mind some grinding in jrpgs it's honestly kind of a tradition at this point even if it is kind of bad game design but we're about 20 to 30 hours into this story and all of a sudden that idea is introduced before this we haven't had to do that at all so the precedent hasn't really been set up until now if you're going to make this fight hard make the rest of the game hard too the game has been easy as cake up until this point and then you just throw in this fight that you need to gain like 20 levels to even be able to have a chance to complete i'm aware that there are ways to cheese the fight but that's not effective because there are battles after these that you should probably be pretty strong to be able to complete top it all off with the fact that this chapter begins with a 3 hour grind for yen that makes this whole chapter like 8 hours long it's kind of wild after we win the battle we didn't really win majima and sajimo were just getting started and the party was completely done for they want to go for round two but arakawa steps out of the dragon chamber he tells them to calm down and who steps out beside him but daigo dojima himself the group is introduced to the three important men and majima wines about not ever getting to fight for real you're telling me they're on our side oh way to go sixth chairman now how are we supposed to finish the fight it was just getting good relax i already said there'd be more fighting tomorrow adachi and nba don't trust arakawa but he invites them into the dragon chamber to discuss these matters arakawa explains that the 3k plan caused daigo majima and saijima to lay low for a while the people in the room are the only ones that know they're in the hq daigo was the one that ordered arakawa to leak information to the tojo leading to its downfall after aoki was elected into office he asked arakawa to betray the tojo aoki threatened his father when he didn't comply and eventually he had to seek daigo's council daigo told him that if he didn't comply he would be taken down by aoki's anti-yakuza laws and some other family would probably crack under aoki's pressure anyways daigo reveals tomorrow's plan once watase gets out of prison they will disband the tojo and omi alliance there's bound to be trouble because of this and that's why they went along with the 3k plan in the first place letting the omi take kamarocho was a move to spread the omi thin once this happened they could disband the alliance and they would be too divided to take control ichiban and his friends need to guard watase and daigo long enough tomorrow to make the disbanding complete the next day the group returns to the yomi hq and ichiban is confronted with tendo he wants to know what ichiban is doing there and arakawa vouches for him as he walks away adachi remembers where he recognizes him from he got kicked out of his boxing career after fixing a match and beating one of his partners to death watasi arrives and makes his speech announcing the landmark disbanding of the huge organization daigo joins in and announces the tojo clan is disbanding as well people are furious nintendo eventually joins in to stand beside the group and help them fend off attackers this is a huge event probably one of the largest events in the history of the yakuza games ever it was a massive twist but one that was much needed especially for the tojo the tojo has been on the decline for ages since the games started every game has had some sort of effect on the tojo and we've been hearing for forever that the tojo is a shadow of its former self without kitio around to prop it up there's no way it could have continued on the omi on the other hand is stronger than ever but was always just used as a tool for other masterminds to make their way up in the world they both needed to end we destroy a group of omi in our way but one of the men gets past us he almost stabs watase with a knife but someone shows up to save him i knew you weren't really gone so he's finally back the dragon of dojima [Music] how did you find him who [Music] i don't know what you're talking about he's just some extra muscle some bodyguard i hired couldn't even tell you his name kazuma kitty you himself the officers welcome kittyu's presence there's no way that the tojo and the omi could end without kid you there he decides to help out and guard the backline while we take the front watase daigo and basically everyone head out to leave and kittyu gives ichiban a subtle nod of respect before heading out he isn't sure who the guy is but he knows he must be powerful because everyone there respects him ichiban is exhausted and can't get up but arakawa thanks him for his help daigo and matase head to the police station to finalize the disbanding of the clans when ichiban arrives back in eugene show it turns out nick was the one fostering daigo majima and saijima ichiban heads to meet with arakawa that night he can't stay long because he's meeting with hoshino later ichiban still treats arakawa like his patriarch but they're both just civilians now arakawa is making it his personal mission to stop aoki at this point he can't let him run rampant anymore someone has to stand up to him arukawa heads to meet hoshino and tells ichiban that he's going to work with watase and daigo to get the remaining yakuza legitimate work ichiban just wants to be a family again with arakawa and he can't believe that considering everything he's put ichiban through ichiban tells him that if he feels guilty he should let him serve again arakawa says that he dreams about ichiban's birth that 40 years ago akane is giving birth in shangri-la and masato was born there instead he asks ichiban if he'd like to meet his parents someday but ichiban has gotten used to not knowing who they are arakawa brushes it off as just a dream and leaves for the night ichiban gets a call later that night that arakawa was pulled from the water that morning killed by a gunshot wound [Applause] takabe is filling adachi in on what he knows arakawa left his dinner with hoshino by himself they believe he was killed on his way home watase and daigo were also attacked by omi loyalists last night and they think that ichiban and ko might be targeted next ishiota sawashiro and omi former higher ups are having a meeting ishiota declares that he's going to unite the loyalists under a new name sawashiro is pissed about arakawa's death and decides to gouge one of the men's eyes out who wasn't loyal to him he vows to find out who killed him ichiban is thinking about good times and gets a call from hoshino he invites him over to talk hoshino tells ichiban about their dinner arakawa seemed satisfied and was finally getting to eat peking duck he had never gotten to try after his father had died hoshino wanted to walk him back but he wouldn't let him and hoshino blames himself for what happened hoshino tells ichiban the omi is already reforming hoshino offers him a gun to get vengeance for arukawa to go after aoki ichiban doesn't want to kill him arakawa wouldn't have wanted that and ichiban has a plan to get him to see the error of his ways the group realizes that they have to get to kume and it turns out that it's announcement day the last day you can submit a candidate for office they track down kume but are interrupted by guards aoki is on tv using arakawa's death to push his agenda hoshino arrives and convinces ichiban to become the candidate it would give them the ability to get close to kume so they could get an in on arakawa ichiban has to now plan a campaign so he can get close to kumai hoshino gives ichiban a van the next day an old vehicle they use to sell contraband he uses it to go counter kume's speech in hamakita park kume is dismissing ichiban's candidacy because he was a previous criminal ichiban wins over the crowd besting kume with logic aoki receives news of ichiban's movements he's berating sawashiro and says he plans to run his new omi alliance differently he gives sawashiro a picture and tells him to kill the person in the next 24 hours the next day ichiban almost gets close enough to talk to kumei but han rushes up to tell him that hoshino is being targeted by an assassin ichiban and ko rush over to the cereu clan hq and we have to fight our way through reaching the end we find sawashiro standing in the room with hoshino's dead body sawashiro just puts ichiban down the whole time telling him that he's nothing aoki wanted to kill him but it would be too public so he had to take out the eg 3 from under him ichiban wants to know if sawashiro killed arakawa but that doesn't matter because they're about to fight this battle is a little tougher than the last time that we fought him sawashiro will switch weapons throughout the fight and deal big damage with attacks it's not so much that we can't heal through it though and we make quick work of him in the end sawashiro reveals that he refused the order to kill arakawa ichiban thinks this must mean he still has respect for the man but it's actually because he has a secret he's kept from everyone when sawashiro was young he got a girl pregnant she ended up having the baby because it was too late to terminate the pregnancy she didn't know what to do with it so she left it in a coin locker by the time he got there he saw arakawa smashing in the locker sawashiro is aoki's real father sawashiro eventually joined the family to atone for his mistake and ichiban is the only person that he's ever told about this but what happened to the other child turns out akane the girl arakawa got pregnant worked at shangri-la it would only make sense that she would have her baby there and when saurshiro stuck around arakawa took his son he saw two soap land attendants pick up arakawa's real son ichiban kasuka ichiban is shocked at this news and goes to leave but the group thinks that sarwashiro has to pay for killing hoshino sawashiro doesn't really care what happens because aoki has basically gotten rid of him after he denied the order to kill arakawa he thinks that ishiota was the real murderer sawashiro is driven off to prison and the group learns that sawashiro himself sent in the tip about the attack on hoshino revealing that he was looking for someone to stop him the next day ichiban is having none of it he's incredibly angry and frustrated and this just isn't like him he doesn't know what's going on arakawa could be his father but that doesn't even matter at this point because he's dead hoshino is dead as well and aoki has gone far past the point of no return at this point he's up against a wall and it seems like he just can't get past it he finally heads to find kume to get the answers he needs from him they don't find anything at bleach japan and some omi attack them they don't want to talk and ichiban begins beating the guy to a pulp this is a huge moment for ichiban he's officially broken lost his cool he's normally incredibly happy upbeat positive he almost has this young boy's outlook on life where he thinks everything's going to be okay but he's finally realized everything isn't going to be okay he finds out kumai left to kamarocho and continues beating the guy kitiyu eventually shows back up to pull him off incredibly disappointed in ichiban kittyu knows aoki's next move but he doesn't want to give the info to ichiban at this point because frankly he doesn't deserve it ichiban isn't living up to the dragon of dojima at this point and he doesn't know how big that is or what that means yet but we do we get this funny little moment here where kiriyu asks han how he isn't dead and han tells him he's just a shadow of the original jun gihan revealing that it's a name and face that's passed on kind of like james bond kitty wants ichiban to meet him at the comey jewel later aoki is toying with the commissioner and talks to ishioda ishiota has some operation that he's about to commence something big and aoki promises him the seat of the chairman of the omi if he completes it we meet kitiyu the next day and he wants to fight ichiban for information on aoki he has to prove himself and as we know kitty gets to know people with his fists not words we finally have to fight kiriyu something we've only been able to do a couple of times in the series just like i said when i was talking about yakuza 4 it really mirrors the nero dante fight from devil may cry 4. kitty u is ridiculously strong but honestly it's not as much of a challenge as majima and saijima it's a pretty difficult fight but there's not a drastic shift in difficulty like fighting the mad dog so it's not nearly as bad kitty who switches through his four stances throughout the fight he resists everything and doesn't take a lot of damage so the fight isn't really hard it can just take a long time one interesting thing about kittiou is that he won't hit women so he'll never attack psycho if she's in our party he can do some nasty damage and really punish us but healing through his attacks and whittling him down will get the job done when we win kitty who tells ichiban he can do better kittyu throws a final punch and we see the world through ichiban's eyes again we see this idealized version of the reality around him ichiban is a knight fighting off a great beast a dragon i shouldn't have to point out why kitiu is a dragon i want to use this moment to talk about ichiban again for a second he's truly and honestly become one of my favorite characters in the series after one single entry he's just a great contrast to everything that we've seen before he isn't like all the other yakuza characters he isn't this grim serious melodramatic guy he tries to look for the positives he tries to give people the benefit of the doubt and sees the world in a positive light he looks at everything like it's an rpg yes it's a little corny and a little kitsch but it works so well in this world ichiban is a light in the darkness i think in the future that's how he'll live up to people like kiriyu majima and saijima he may become this powerful legend as well but he's a shining ray of hope not because he's going to take down the bad guy in a single punch but because seeing that someone else can smile in the face of darkness can make you realize that things might be okay too ichiban is inspiring and not the kind of inspiring that makes you want to try harder but maybe be a little kinder and look at things in a different way regardless the rpg thing was just a dream and ichiban wakes up after kitty you knocked him out kitty who tells him that he had to beat him because he was too rageful earlier and needed to think clearly kitty who takes them into the monitor room seong hui reveals that aoki has an assassin coming in from outside eugene show and they've been tracking him his name is mirrorface and he's a master of disguise he can make himself look like anyone and is the best at making assassinations look like accidents he's been sent out to kill sawashiro at this point ichiban has to stop them and he asks kitty you if he wants to help kittyu declares that he spent too much time out in the sun and needs to return to the shadows to protect the ones he cares about he encourages ichiban to stay close to his friends before leaving seong hui tells them to forget they ever saw him and we say goodbye to kitty you once again one thing i should note before we move on is that the voice actor that plays kitiu in the english dub is daryl curlio this is the same voice actor that played him in the english dub for the original yakuza game who sega brought back all those years later to reprise his role i thought this was such a great move and even though that dub was hated i thought he did a really good job here ishiota has been spotted meeting up with mirrorface and we have to track them down ishiota is there and denies killing arakawa but ichiban doesn't buy it just then another adachi jumps out of the shadows this is mirrorface and he's perfectly mimicked adachi ichiban tells the two apart by quizzing them on traffic code knowledge and we go to battle this fight isn't too bad if you take down mirror face quickly because he can be a bit of a pain once you do that though you have to deal with ishiota he does a lot of damage with his counter ability so all of our hits have to be big ones if we just try to whittle him down he'll keep countering every move and dealing way more damage than we can eventually we take them down and find out that ishiota wasn't the one to kill arakawa he was originally sent to do so but tendo got in the way and sided with arakawa he played along for a bit before shooting the man in the head they need to know where tendo is but the building is rigged with explosives and tendo gets the ok to detonate the bombs inside blowing up the building and everyone with it aoki and kume are spending their last moments before the election campaigning in the city ichiban reveals himself to not be dead despite the rumors floating around he jumps up onto their campaign bus and secretly tells aoki that he knows he ordered arakawa dead he also knows there's a record of the order in arakawa's office in the millennium tower he's going to leak the record and tear aoki down before the polls open tomorrow aoki has let power get to his head not just in that he thinks he can do anything but because he thinks he's untouchable ichiban is about to prove him wrong ichiban meets nick ogada over at earth angel who is helping him with his public appearance apparently there was no recording of arakawa's death order ichiban has it all figured out now aoki will search far and wide in the office to find it and will meet tendo there in his office aoki orders tendo to kill ichiban but not so directly because he doesn't want to be recorded again tendo has something to prove and wants to get the job done adachi has a place for them to rest in the city since the gang is in kamurocho now his old police friend has a bar called nu sedina that they can use as a base of operations when we get there we realize the obvious that it's date himself he says ichiban reminds him of an old friend and tells them to use the bar well ichiban and ko head over to the millennium tower and begin their assault tendo already having arrived hours earlier this final dungeon of sorts is massive there are tons of floors and lots more goons to fight making our way through those floors it's a massive final crawl to the top and when we get there the office has been trashed tendo waiting for them tendo taunts ichiban about arakawa's death he's reduced the man to nothing but a rung on the ladder that he's climbing to the top i should note here that ichiban does have a yakuza tattoo of course but his is a dragonfish this shows in my mind that ichiban is destined for greatness just like kiriyu but he has something else in there too he's not exactly like kiriyu he's not just a copy he has his own path to trudge tendo has a blue dragon tattoo on his back and we go to battle with him the battle with tendo is kind of ridiculous it lasts forever at least at the level my party was everyone was at level 59 i hadn't really grinded outside of the sotenbori battle arena from earlier but the fight was just so long tendo takes barely any damage from all attacks he resists all kinds of damage except special electric damage he also has an attack that has a chance to instant ko a party member which we always have to watch out for most of the battle was spent reviving dead party members or healing alive ones and getting a few hits in here or there after the battle we see aoki has won the elections the screen starts playing a news report that says aoki has a warrant out for murder on him though and nick tells everyone that he's actually masato arakawa aoki tries to escape to the millennium tower and arrives at the office tendo is there standing over the broken bodies of ichiban and ko he tells aoki the recording was a fake aoki tells tendo to find whoever hacked the news broadcast and kill them and dispose of these bodies just then ichiban hops up revealing he wasn't dead this tendo is actually mirror face and decided to work with ichiban after aoki tried to have him killed jungi and psycho were recording aoki's orders to kill the men and are uploading the whole thing online aoki sends his guards at us and we have to fight again this fight is laughably easy compared to the others and it's probably supposed to be aoki was never a true powerhouse of a yakuza he never fought to become strong he never cared about the tradition he just worked his way to the top and used the crime organization as a tool to get what he wanted aoki tries to escape to the top but ichiban chases him our final battle of the game we have to fight aoki barehanded back in our freelancer job again no tricks just fists we go whole ass brock lesnar suplex city [ __ ] and take him out ichiban knocks aoki down to the bottom level and tells him to surrender but he won't aoki is relentless he doesn't care even when ichiban tells him that he was always jealous of him he always wanted what he had ichiban wants to give him a chance though to start over and become a man he can respect ichiban goes to the police and tells them what aoki has done aoki takes this moment to take a cop hostage and even then ichiban still tries to help him because he doesn't want to see another family member die aoki knocks the police officer out and escapes into the elevator aoki returns to the coin lockers and ichiban follows him there aoki recalls how he saw yumano again the hostess he was in love with he was just getting elected and she was dating horanochi she didn't recognize him and called him a fine young man he thought this was ironic and realized that his power that he detained was fragile no one would appreciate how far he'd come after he changed himself aoki has the gun to his head and ichiban tells him that none of this is true everyone loves him and cares for him they wanted what was best for him ichiban even considers him a brother and the last thing he wants is to see him die did you ever stop to think why are a kawasan captain sawashiro and i never gave up on you no matter how much bad [ __ ] you dragged us into let me tell you it wasn't easy but we did it anyway because we're all connected deep inside our hearts you see things in black and white but family's not that simple no one appreciated you for who you are [ __ ] we were always there for you we would have done anything for you gone to hell and back all you had to do was ask aoki puts the gun in a locker and decides to turn himself over to the police at this moment kumai runs up and stabs him for betraying him ichiban grabs aoki's body and runs through the crowd to get him to a doctor we see hortonocchi on the roof of tokyo pd he finally gets his comeuppance as adachi reveals that he found evidence in the millennium tower of his bribes and corruption the police arrest him and adachi can finally let that grudge go ichiban is praying at an arakawa shrine sawashiro got life in prison both arakawas are dead and neither of them knew of their true sons or fathers nanba tells ichiban he should get a dna test to figure out if arakawa was really his father but jiro kasuga and masumi arakawa are his fathers both nothing will change that a dna test doesn't matter at the funeral daigo watase majima saijima and mitsuo are all there daigo really is creating a security firm to give aksyakuza a legitimate business to work for they want him to take arakawa's place in the business but he can't he has unfinished business in eugene show and friends he has to look out for ichiban pays his final respects to both arakawas his brother and father ichiban meets back up with his friends and he asks psycho to tell the group what was going on while he takes a break by the river there he thinks about the last words that aoki said to him before he died [Music] the bottom isn't all bad as long as you keep looking up yakuza 7 story is incredibly well made it's massive in size even compared to other games in the yakuza series it's huge it tries to tackle a ton of things fatherhood and lineage right and wrong perception of life overcoming adversity and family in general there's so many things here and it does them all so well sega was taking a huge risk in getting rid of kitty u and completely replacing him with a new character for fans to control but they knocked it out of the park i won't lie when the game was coming out i was incredibly excited to play it but i still had my reservations i knew that if they tried to copy the magic that they had before instead of going in a new direction it would ruin what they already had but they didn't do that they took a new path and a huge risk to try and tell an interesting story and boy was it that not just ichiban himself but adachi nanba saiko jungi zhao arakawa aoki masato are all incredibly well developed over the course of the story you fall in love with some of these characters hate others love and hate a few it's great not only that but they brought back some fan favorites in spectacular ways and didn't parade them around to shoehorn in classics they used these characters to build the new ones up one of my favorite moments in the game is when kitiyu figuratively passes the torch to ichiban even better is when he's disappointed in our main character we almost can't even be proud of ichiban in that moment sure we've been playing him for many hours at this point but if you're a big fan of yakuza you've played kittyu for many more because of this you're going to side with his judgment on things naturally and this makes us upset at our own character that he hasn't achieved the approval of a legend but that makes us work harder just like ichiban to get that approval and achieve our goals the game is so well made and the new characters are some of my favorites in the series and i can't wait to see where they go from here but just because we have new characters doesn't mean the game has gotten rid of yakuza's best content distractions yakuza 7 doesn't hold back on the amount of side content included as we all know yakuza is famous for its plethora of extra things to do in its world so i think it's time we got in depth with yakuza 7's distractions i'll be candid here i probably have over 300 hours in this game overall i've played and replayed it tons of times as there's just so much to do and so much to aspire to as well as replaying it for this video even with that said there's still new things that i'm finding as i go through this game there are three main pieces of side content that make up the larger part of the distractions in this entry the first one that i mentioned previously is the business management mini game if you've seen my videos before i've alluded to the fact that i'm a bit of a horror for a good management minigame this mini-game scratches that itch it's incredibly addicting and really well made your goal is to create a business conglomerate that rivals all of the others using some investments from nick ogata you start out as a small confections business and have to climb your way to the top you can do this by purchasing businesses upgrading them recruiting employees promoting those employees and assigning them to different spots all of these things affect how well businesses run it's kind of a delicate balance though because if the employees working there or the facilities don't have enough to provide a good product service or notability then we won't be making as much profits as we could so we can't just go upgrading everything to the max right away we can also make investments which are always bad and run ad time to increase profits the main goal we're working towards though is increasing our share price and our rank in the market the best way to do this is to convince the shareholders that we're doing a good job every period we'll be tasked with having a shareholders meeting here we can bring some employees and try to get the shareholders support we do this by trying to defeat the shareholders in a battle of words different employees have different types and persuasion that determines how well they can convince someone we can also use hilarious special abilities to really apologize to the shareholders the whole thing is hilarious because it's just investors screaming at us because we aren't doing a good job even if we are the entire mini-game is really great and it's kind of the peak of what makes a yakuza mini game good it's engaging it's funny it's well designed the ui draws the eye and the slow creep to the top with rewards along the way makes you want to play more the first day i got yakuza 7 as soon as i unlocked this minigame i played all the way through and didn't stop once it was so addicting i couldn't put it down we can gain a ton of money from the business mini-game but there's another pro to getting to the highest rank and that's eddie this is the woman that helps us run our business after we complete the first few introductions to the business management we unlock her as a party member she can actually fight with us outside and has her own default class called clerk i never really found too much use for her she isn't the greatest but she isn't bad either the other interesting thing about eddie is that her bond is tied to the mini-game so the higher we raise the business in the rankings the higher her bond with us is increasing her experience gained outside of battle the second of the three large distractions in yakuza 7 is dragon cart pocket circuit fighter can be found in hamakita park now going by the name dragon fighter he's running a new kind of race though dragon cart this is a standard kart racer where we can race go-karts around a track and use weapons to speed ourselves up or stop our enemies we can upgrade our carts and use the rings we collect in races to buy stuff from the shop this one wasn't bad it was pretty fun for the first couple of races but felt like it got repetitive pretty quickly the races also aren't that difficult and it was pretty easy to ace everyone the third largest distraction in yakuza 7 is part-time hero part-time hero is a sort of vigilante who helps out folks in the streets of yokohama he will let us into the organization and allow us to help him in his duties there are three kinds of hero work that we can take on for rewards rescue missions are standard battles that we have to fight in around the city we seek them out defeat some goons and save the guy or gal in trouble support missions are people around the city who are in dire need of something and we have to get it for them these are usually random items like bugs or broken tvs the last is challenge quests this one is probably why part-time hero is even one of the larger mini-games in yakuza 7 and basically functions as our completion list in previous games the completion lists always served as a way to tell us how much of the overall game that we had completed not just the story this is basically that but for each one we complete we can earn some boosts to our personality stats for each of the support or rescue missions we complete we'll earn some stars for our efforts these stars will eventually rank us up in part-time heroes eyes and we can get a reward from him each time outside of checking items off of our completion list there's another way that we can get ichiban's personality up the vocational school this is a school that ichiban can take tests at to increase different personality stats it starts with a hilarious substory where an american is asking how to get to the train station would you tell me how to get to the station these little quizzes are pretty fun and tested my knowledge a lot of the time because i don't know anything about sports we can head to the local movie theater to watch classics but ichiban is a sleeper we can't let him get taken to rest by the magical sheep that appear in the theater and have to fend them off with button presses the golf center and batting cages are both back in this entry just a little bit changed from their previous iterations they're both fun but the batting cages are especially important because using the points from the mini game you can buy an item called the yakuza training gear this gives whoever has it equipped extra experience and makes grinding for levels a lot easier the only downside is it costs a ridiculous amount of points and takes hours of grinding itself darts are back too but now we can play them with friends this version of darts is also incredibly easy for some reason and i was just sweeping the floor with everyone we can return to the can quest minigame that we were introduced to earlier to collect some cans from the streets this has us driving around on a bike picking up cans and trying not to get hit by rival homeless men we can use boosts to take them out and get extra cans but we're also on a time limit we have to get back to the starting area within a certain time or we get nothing the amount of money we get for doing this is nothing but there is an upside we get eco points for recycling and we can use this to buy stuff from the store i remember exclusively doing this mini-game when the game came out just so that i could get the persona 5 cd and play beneath the mask in the survive bar which just fits so well there's a strange man that has a task for us in the city called tsujimod he gives us a tsuji dex on our phone and tasks us with filling it with all of the enemies that we battle this is clearly a pokemon parody and serves as our index of enemies throughout the game he'll give us measly little rewards every time we hit a milestone we can collect little tojo crests around the city and turn them into this weird mascot to get rewards the things we can buy are okay but the best ones are the summons we can use like daigo for example we should also talk about pound mates because i didn't talk about it throughout the story i didn't use pound mates too much as i always have a weird thing about using summons and jrpgs i try to only use them if i absolutely have to so i never really used the pound mates even though they are pretty cool pound mates like i said are basically summons and a lot of them are obtained through substories we can call them in battle to do massive damage to an enemy or recharge our health they cost money though outside of the first time using them the romance workshop is a pretty large part of the game we can use it to upgrade our weapons or craft completely new ones this is the only way to get some of the best weapons for each character in the game but once we get to the higher levels it costs a lot of money and materials so we of course have to do some grinding there's some interesting women around the city that will let us give them a honk honk which will increase our health they're pretty hard to find though and we can only use them once each the food system in yakuza 7 has also greatly changed to now integrate our party members when we go out to eat not only do we get status effects that increase things like experience gain or defense but we can have a chat with our fellow party members certain meals will trigger conversations with certain characters and we'll learn more about them while also growing their bond yakuza 7 has some of the best karaoke in the entire series and it's mainly because of the english dub we finally get to hear baka mitai in english and it's hilarious [Music] we also have some new original tracks that are great like ichiban's song the future i dreamed of which just always has me rolling laughing i'm gonna level up be the best that i can be and i'm not gonna stop questing until i'm my hero i'm gonna level up be the best [Music] the biggest and final challenge of yakuza 7 though is its millennium tower dungeon we unlock this when we complete the main game and it's pretty difficult we have to go back through the tower with way stronger enemies there's an even harder one after this called the true final millennium tower that's insanely difficult and i'll be honest i've never beaten it it's the last trophy i have to get before i platinum this game and i just give up every time i've tried i've spent so many hours on different saves grinding in the kamirocho dungeon getting every job maxed out and it just never works i always get one-shotted and it's truly a legit challenge but of course the bulk of yakuza's side content is always devoted to sub-stories sub-stories are short little adventures that we can get involved in that are usually pretty wacky and outlandish we can start a substory called the miracle of spice by finding an old woman who isn't fast enough to cross the street we can't exactly speed her up but later we come across a man who is selling kimchi that's so spicy it makes you run he gives us three servings of the kimchi and we use it to help three different people around town eventually the old woman herself who uses it to get across the street before the light changes baby don't cry starts when we find a man with baby formula in the street while talking to him we hear some crying from inside the building and go investigate it turns out to be the same guys that we found in yakuza kiwami 2 that dress up as babies and get taken care of fono michio starts when we realize that onomichio has become popular even outside of onomichi we find out that there's someone making knockoff onomichios and we have to take them out we even get to use onomichio as a poundmate for completing this one there's a touching story where a girl has grown fond of a persimmon tree in town she's sick and has to go in for surgery so her father asks us to protect the single persimmon left on the tree so it'll be there when she gets out all sorts of madness happens threatening the last fruit but we save it and the girl is happy when she's better yakuza 7's side content is really good some of the most addicting and well-made mini-games in the series are here i think a lot of the mini-games work better here than even in the original yakuza games there's a reason for this though because everything is linked not only does every mini-game feel good to play but each one gives you rewards for completing it whether that's money collectible cds weapons personality increases or bond with your teammates basically every mini game has some sort of effect on the rpg systems at play this makes you feel like each game has a purpose and a place in the overall game and like you're getting rewarded for completing tasks it works so well and incentivizes going the extra mile to complete side missions and sub stories yakuza 7 overall is a wonderful game and i'll be honest it's my favorite one in the series i don't think it's the best one in the series even though that may sound confusing but it's certainly the one that i enjoy the most it's a terrific fun dramatic and amazing romp through yokohama one of the reasons it's so impressive to me is that rgg had one game when yakuza 6 came out they decided to end kitty use story while they were at it they realized that they were going to revitalize the entire formula everything that made yakuza what it was was going to change because so many drastic changes were made to the series they had a big risk on their hands they had to prove to the fans that this new gameplay would work that these new characters would work and even if they did all work fans still wanted to know that the spirit the spirit of yakuza was still there deep down in my opinion rgg succeeded on every front there's a few small flaws with the rpg system kinks that i'm confident will be worked out in the future but i really hope this is the beginning for another golden age of yakuza games ichiban is about to forge his story now an entirely new path and seeing that saga unfold over the coming years is something i can't wait to watch yakuza was given praise by critics upon release most gave credit to the new characters in writing but criticized the length of the game and felt the rpg systems got stale towards the end yakuza 7 sold 450 000 copies in japan and asia by march 2020. it was their most successful release internationally which caused them to rethink how they distribute games outside of japan this is the most recent release in the mainline yakuza series but before we cap off our journey through the yakuza games we have to go back and talk about some spin-offs but we'll talk about those next time bye dad
