this actor does not act he becomes the character Daniel Day-Lewis is the epitome of method using his powerful voice and his empathetic Soul Daniel Day-Lewis elevates the art of acting and Cinema to unearthly Realms his painful screams echo through our nightmares as he brings life to Maniac poets leaving us with nothing left to do but offer our respect the story of Daniel Day Lewis is the story of an artist so dedicated to the craft that he almost died to ensure its authenticity but this master thespian seems to have stepped away from Cinema in order to preserve his own physical and mental health and make shoes so yeah why the [ __ ] did Daniel Day Lewis step away from Hollywood and how the [ __ ] did he get to be such a good actor is his announcement about retiring true is there a character or a filmmaker out there who can tempt Daniel Day-Lewis to come back should he come back all these questions will some of these questions will be answered and more yeah what the [ __ ] happened to Daniel Day Lewis [Applause] but to truly understand what the [ __ ] happened to Daniel Day Lewis we must begin at the beginning of the beginning began when he was born on his birthday 1957 London and in true Daniel Day Lewis fashioned the first film he ever appeared in was a great film an oscar-nominated film Sunday Bloody Sunday in 1971 where he would go uncredited as a 14 year old Street Vandal a role he later said he loved because he was paid to vandalize cars in front of a church continuing that Prestige Daniel day-lewis's first ever credited role would be as Colin in the academy award-winning film Gandhi it's about Gandhi it's a very small role but it's one of those moments where you're like hey that's that actor when he was young and yeah appearing in a best picture-winning film can do wonders for your career sometimes it used to and for Daniel Day-Lewis this led to a much larger role in the film The Bounty where he held his own up against Anthony Hopkins this was followed by my beautiful launderette in 1985 a very controversial role for the time that allowed him to be tough and sensitive throughout the film The British Film Institute has ranked my beautiful launderette as the 50th greatest British film of the 20th century and Daniel Day-Lewis would receive the best supporting actor award from the national board of review thank you and that same year 1985 Daniel Day Lewis would appear in A Room With a View which opened on the same day as my beautiful launderette so yeah in one day Daniel Day-Lewis this new up-and-coming actor was able to show the world his range at once on the same day this time he plays a more flamboyant elegant uptight mystery of a man it's the type of character that we often forget Daniel Day-Lewis also excels in nowadays when you think Daniel day-lewish you just think a guy screaming his head off and you know it's beautiful but he can also create this type of character who is awkward and horrible and you know has a stick up his butt basically a fancy stick of his fancy butt this was followed by a little scene Gem of a movie called nanu in 1986 after learning how to speak fluent check in order to play the Darkly Charming manipulative woman in the unbearable lightness of being in 1988 and Daniel Day-Lewis would actually get all kind of silly and goofy and wacky in a comedy called stars and bars once again another side of Daniel Day-Lewis that people seem to have forgotten about and I'm I'm one of those people but then Daniel Day-Lewis would fully introduce himself to the world when he starred as a man with cerebral palsy in the Masterpiece of a biopic called my left foot in 1989 a film that will break your heart a million times over while inspiring you to go out there and accomplish things with our left feet and the rest of our body parts too this film really shows the power of the human spirit and how it is possible to achieve greatness no matter who you are or what you can do but Daniel day-lewis's performance in my left foot Willy it's more than just acting this is basically him channeling the spirit of this man to the point of possession Daniel beats and batters every inch of his body and through his performance you can almost feel his pain and with this character he shows us A desperate longing for love which is clouded in tragedy and hurt like I said you can feel the pain of this beautiful genius and when I say beautiful genius I'm talking about both Christy Brown and Daniel Day-Lewis many people had already known that Daniel Day-Lewis was an actor who committed fully to his performances but no one could have anticipated the lengths that he would go to for this film as the character was confined to a wheelchair so too was Daniel Day-Lewis refusing to get out of the chair between takes and forcing the cast and crew to push him around on set even spoon feed him he would ultimately break two ribs in the process as the crouched position he maintained was too much for his body to handle it literally broke him but that commitment to the character paid off when Daniel Day-Lewis would win his first Academy Award for best actor much deserved you've just provided me with the makings of one hell of a weekend in Dublin 1989 would prove to be a very formative year for Daniel Day-Lewis not only in his career on screen but also off Daniel Day-Lewis was a very gifted stage actor having appeared in highly regarded Productions of Edward II a mid-summer Night's Dream Dracula and Romeo and Juliet but it would be his performance as hamlet in that Scottish play that would affect him so deeply and he would never return to the stage during a 1989 performance Daniel Day-Lewis would run off stage during a scene where Hamlet speaks to the ghost of his father for Daniel Day-Lewis was so immersed in the scene that he says for a moment he felt as if he was really speaking to the ghost of his own father his real ghost dad which overwhelmed him so much that he ran off stage in tears and has never returned Bubba in 1982 Daniel Day Lewis would Star as Hawkeye and Michael Mann's The Last of the Mohicans his performance really lets us feel The Adventurous romantic Spirit of this story and the raw brutal violence of that time Daniel Day-Lewis would take on each scene and Last of the Mohicans as if he was in the midst of battle and his life depended on it like he's a badass in this flick y'all as always Daniel Day Lewis brought the commitment to this project you would expect he would live off the land for months prior to shooting and would continue living this rugged Outdoors lifestyle for the entire production never indulging in modern day conveniences he learned how to track and skin animals he became a master at tossing tomahawks and he would build rather impressive canoes from scratch people even said that he kept his right with him at all times and treated it as if it was his baby this extended to a really awkward Christmas dinner party with his family when he showed up to the table as Hawkeye and his rifle was right next to him Merry Christmas from Hawkeye that actually sounds like it could be a really hilarious Christmas movie think of all the Christmas Shenanigans Hawkeye could get into [Music] [Applause] but yeah the extremes that he went to for this role would again take a toll on the actor's Health this time his mental health as after filming he would tell director Michael Mann that he had no idea how not to be Hawkeye anymore and he would suffer from bouts of claustrophobia and Mohican hallucinations but he would be nominated for a bafta so it was all worth it foreign actor would team up with an amazing filmmaker Martin Scorsese in the one Martin Scorsese movie that nobody watches the age of innocence in 1993 he plays a hopeless romantic who is full of passion but doesn't understand the ways of the heart and despite this being a less physically demanding role than his previous ones Daniel Day-Lewis would still bring considerable dedication to the role as he would check into hotels under the name of his character Newland Archer and he would walk around New York wearing his Wardrobe from the movie which would have been an incredible sight to see but actually considering how Daniel Day-Lewis actually dresses this isn't that weird in 1993 we would see Daniel Day-Lewis again go to those extreme physical lengths for a character in the film in the name of the father true story of a wrongly convicted man this was a role that Daniel Day-Lewis took after turning down Andrew Beckett in the movie Philadelphia his role and in the name of the father would allow Daniel Day-Lewis to pretty much show every human emotion possible from Carefree playfulness to animalistic rage Daniel Day Lewis would hounds and would live in a prison spending considerable time in solitary confinement where he would spend days and nights without food and water he would also demand that the film crew verbally abuse him Danny day Lou went as far to get two police officers to come to set and vigorously interrogate him for nine straight hours and the method to his Madness it must have worked as he was nominated for a plethora of awards including best actor at the Academy Awards the Oscars of course he would lose that year to Tom Hanks who played Andrew Beckett in Philadelphia the role that Daniel day turned down oh Daniel day is not an actor who usually seeks out roles the roles they seek out him yet there was one character That Got Away a character that Daniel Day fought really hard for with the director ultimately saying No thank you and that director who turned down Daniel Day Lewis was Quentin Tarantino as Daniel Day who really wanted the role of Vincent Vega in Pulp Fiction but Tarantino was set on John Travolta and yeah it's hard to imagine anybody else in this role other than John Travolta but if anybody could have done it it would have been my boy Danny but no harm no foul instead Daniel Day-Lewis would go on to star in Arthur Miller's The Crucible and he was so dedicated to this role that he married Arthur Miller's daughter Rebecca Miller it must have been a very strong attraction at first because when Arthur introduced the two young lovers Daniel day was in full-blown John Proctor mode you know he was all covered in dirt and stanky while making The Crucible he built his own house that he would live in during production and yeah of course he lived as John Proctor would have in that era you know refusing to bathe himself for the entire production in this film his character is pretty intense as he battles with his faith during this hysteric historical paranoid period and like always he gives an amazing performance that is often overlooked when studying his filmography this film about the Salem witch trials and McCarthyism is a really great film let's just say it's much better than Hocus Pocus 2. cause it is my name because I cannot have another in my life for the movie The Boxer in 1997 Daniel Day-Lewis would train with a real life world famous professional boxer for the better part of two years and many professional fighters have said that Daniel Day-Lewis trained so hard and so serious that he could have easily taken any of the leading fighters in his weight class at that time he looks like a guy who's throwing punches in a fight it's way more realistic than any boxing movie I've ever seen but that wasn't all Daniel Day-Lewis did for the role he would go so far to give himself real tattoos and would break his nose while filming the film The Boxer didn't do that well with the box office but it would Garner Daniel Day-Lewis a Golden Globe nomination back when people cared about the Golden Globes but one must assume that this film took a massive toll on poor Danny Boy as after the boxer he decided he needed a break and took up the age-old craft of cobbling he became a cobbler a Shoemaker Daniel Day-Lewis made shoes he said that being a cobbler was the perfect antidote to acting he liked that there was very real evidence of what you had done and if you had messed up in any way the evidence was there it was real you could see it and you could fix it there was no opinion involved No Rotten Tomatoes no thumbs up no golden stars it was either good or bad a shoe is a shoe and to Daniel Day-Lewis that was so pure and so beautiful that he dedicated his life to making our feet have good shoes come to think of it the my left foot guy eventually would help our left feet and our right ones too if we wanted more than one shoe Daniel Day Lewis seemed perfectly content keeping away from the big weird world of Hollywood while he was living that simple cobbler life he would even reject Peter Jackson when he was offered several times the lead role in Lord of the Rings and Daniel Day Lewis was like no I'm done I don't want to act anymore this is ridiculous it's just silly silly stuff but then Martin Scorsese came a Colin I don't know it was the movie Gangs of New York that made Daniel Day-Lewis agree to come out of his semi-retirement as he really enjoyed working with the director on the Age of Innocence but Gangs of New York is anything but innocent this epic brutal violent picture would unleash the monster inside of Day Lewis he brings a truly terrifying creation of Mammoth proportions he sends chills down your spine with every line and makes you truly believe that Daniel Day-Lewis would feel right at home on the dirty streets of the 1860s Daniel Day-Lewis would hire circus performers to come to his house and teach him how to throw sharp thin daggers while he apprenticed as a butcher to make sure his meat movements were perfect on set he had one eye covered with glass and would learn to tap the knife without flinching no no blinking and strangely enough Daniel Day-Lewis would listen to Eminem's song The Way I Am every morning at 5am to get into character he would walk around the streets of Rome where the film was shot and would get into fights with random strangers because he refused to break character and the butcher's answer to everything is just violence he even had his nose broken by Leonardo DiCaprio during a fight scene yet he didn't break character and continued filming oh but most notoriously of all this film is where method acting almost cost him his life during filming in the blistering bitter cold of those winter months Danny Boy refused to wear a coat that wasn't true to the time period which in those times apparently it was just a very thin barely anything piece of fabric this caused him to catch pneumonia and because modern medicine was not around during the time that this film takes place he refused all medications ultimately Daniel Day-Lewis became so ill that he broke character and had to take some antibiotics just to avoid you know death so so yeah let me get this straight the dude wouldn't take medicine to save his life because it wasn't appropriate to the era but he woke up every morning listening to Eminem just saying but yeah for that dedication and this amazing performance Daniel Day Louis was awarded a plethora of film nominations including one for best actor at the Academy Awards he didn't win though but whatever and after the film he couldn't shake the voice of his character he was just stuck in his vocal cords apparently and he even fell into a bit of depression leading up to the premiere as he realized that was the true point in which he knew that this entire experience was over [Applause] his next film would be titled The Ballad of Jack and Rose which I was surprised to learn is not a sequel to Titanic this film was written and directed by his wife Rebecca Miller and in true Daniel Day-Lewis fashion he rewarded his wife for giving him this role by leaving her for a duration of the filming so that he could focus on the character in isolation she was like Hey husband would you like to be in my movie and he was like yes I now I need to go away from you I'm sure she understood you have to understand those things to marry Daniel Day-Lewis I'm sure and in order to play this part of a man with a serious heart condition Daniel Day-Lewis would starve himself and only eat meager vegan meals foreign [Music] after being impressed with the film Punch-Drunk Love Daniel Day-Lewis would sign on to Star and Paul Thomas Anderson's There Will Be Blood Paul Thomas Anderson would send Daniel Day-Lewis old tapes of director John Houston so that Daniel Day-Lewis could study his vocal components and mannerisms the result was Daniel Day-Lewis creating a character that fits better in a horror film than a historical drama foreign he basically transforms into a villainous vampire that sucks blood oil and milk shakes out of every actor in the frame he is vicious and Furious in every line he delivers from his devilish tongue is mesmerizing this time Daniel day-lewis's process seems to have been too intense for some as it is rumored that the original actor who is cast as Eli Sunday dropped out of the film right before production began so Paul Dano had to take over the original actor just could not handle Daniel but yeah Paul Dano didn't seem to mind actually getting his ass beat by Daniel Day-Lewis or having actual bowling balls actually thrown at his actual body There Will Be Blood would finish atop mini critics year in best of lists and it would win Daniel Day Lewis his second much deserved Academy Award for lead actor that's two Oscars if you're counting as well as his first Screen Actors Guild award for which he gave one of the greatest acceptance speeches when he dedicated his win to the recently departed Heath Ledger there are many actors in this room tonight including my fellow companies who who've given me that that sense of regeneration and Heath Ledger gave it to me [Music] [Applause] his next film would be a bit of a departure the director Rob Marshall says that he considers Daniel Day-Lewis to be one of the greatest actors of all time but said he never in his wildest dreams would have ever considered Daniel Day-Lewis for the lead role in his musical 9 based off of Fellini's eight and a half but then Daniel Day-Lewis himself called up the director and said that he thought making this musical would be a fun experience yeah Daniel D Lewis he was always surprising us you're like oh okay you want to sing and dance now sure this film nine it was not a big hit pulling in 54 million off an 80 million dollar budget but with the five hours a day he spent training and singing and dancing it definitely paid off and he gives an effortless performance but I would recommend just watching eight and a half instead [Applause] of course the biggest hit of his career would come just three years later when he starred as President Abraham Lincoln and Steven Spielberg's 275 million dollar grossing epic Lincoln the task of bringing to life such a well-known historical legendary figure was Monumental but the legacy of Lincoln would only grow with Daniel's Powerhouse of a performance he his transformation into Honest Abe is honestly so good that it makes us all forget that this movie's actually kind of dull but Daniel's amazing don't get me wrong he gives this President a voice that is both unexpected and fitting and you guessed it Daniel Day-Lewis went full method once again during filming he would only reply when people called him Mr President he would even send text messages to Sally Field who played his wife as Abraham Lincoln you know the way the real Abraham Lincoln would send text messages to Mary Todd but again this method worked for Daniel Day Lewis as he would win another Academy Award in doing so Daniel Day-Lewis would become the first person to ever win three lead actor Oscars all of which are much deserved Daniel Day-Lewis told Steven Spielberg that if he won the Oscar for this role that he would retire from acting in five years I am the President of the United States of America clothed in immense power after receiving a Knighthood from Prince William in 2014 Daniel Day-Lewis would remain true to his word as Paul Thomas Anderson's Phantom thread would come out five years after Lincoln this film Phantom thread became famous and Infamous before it ever came out because Day Lewis announced that this would be his final film before retiring permanently he says that he took on the film because the character reminded him of his late father and he likes working with Paul Thomas Anderson the work would pay off as Daniel Day-Lewis would receive yet another Oscar nomination for lead actor he wouldn't win though but who cares please he says that while filming he fell into a deep depression and I think that's what helped him decide to call it quits his performances are always committed and the lengths than the depths that Daniel Day-Lewis is willing to go to achieve these deep and sometimes dark characters had taken their toll on him both physically and mentally and spiritually as an audience member I look at his roles and I am in complete awe of how much of himself he gave to achieve these characters and there is not one moment not one single frame of any of Daniel Day Lewis's performances that feel inauthentic he's the real deal y'all after finishing a roll Daniel Day-Lewis has said that he is never prepared to leave the character right away his mind his body and his Spirit are never ready to let it go and that sense of bereavement can sometimes linger for years he says that often after filming he found it hard to get back to his normal life as he literally couldn't conceive of what that would be damn dude they're just movies but I thank you I I respect it yeah that level of commitment every single time for every single movie it can make you start to question reality so as we sit here years removed from the last Daniel Day-Lewis movie we can now only dream that one day a script will come along that Daniel Day-Lewis sees and says that's the one that's the one that will bring me back I'm sure that's how he talks but if that day never comes at least we can all rest easy knowing that Daniel Day-Lewis lives a blissfully peaceful life away from all that Hollywood icky stuff yeah Daniel Day-Lewis he doesn't give a [ __ ] about any of that he's probably just sitting there cobbling together the perfect pair of shoes and we as the beneficiaries of his dedication have the Good Fortune of being able to pop in a Blu-ray or streaming or whatever of any of his films at any time we want and receive a true master class in acting yeah you know what that's the beauty of movies you can watch him whenever you want however many times you want and because of this we don't really need a Daniel Day-Lewis comeback he's done plenty he doesn't need to keep drilling so nobody should give a [ __ ] about what the [ __ ] happened to Daniel Day Lewis because he's doing just fine I'm finished foreign
