the zombie survivalist genre is by absolutely no means a stranger to the gaming world with the first ever game zombie zombie being released on the ZX Spectrum in 1984 a plethora followed in its wake over the decades some great and some less than great to put it diplomatically project zomboid is one such game that I consider to fall under the category of genuinely great not only as a zombie game but as an incredible Survival game too and with me clocking in 161 hours of game playay it's a firm favorite of mine those are rookie numbers in this racket hello everyone my name is Dum waer Kai and welcome back to the worst Survival game ever a series where I'm attempting to play every Survival game in the hopes of finding the worst one but before we kick things off as this is the fifth video of my series I thought it'd be best to start with what actually makes a good survival game at least in my humble opinion anyway the main thing I find key to enjoyability of a survival game is a genuine sense of danger right from the get-go that raw feeling of clenching your butttocks in fear as you play on and giving you a real reason to want to keep yourself alive limited resources are also an important factor if I can readily stock up with everything I need to live a safe and healthy lifestyle straight away it becomes comes less of a survival game and more of a slightly spicy trip to Ali environmental challeng is also important the game World should present various non-sentient or NPC hazards and challenges such as extreme weather aggressive Wildlife or enemies and hostile terrain but to keep a fair balance for the sake of enjoyment the map and World should also be detailed and interesting enough for you to want to go out and explore additionally crafting building status effects atmosphere and most importantly a perade or high stakes mechanic as the name might suggest this mechanic means that when you die you lose all progress made so far adding a raw am of tension and encourages more careful and considered decision- making a high challenge for all of us impulsive ADHD Gamers but one you just got AR rise to or face the consequences I could really go on and on about what makes a good survival game but those are the core elements to me which Segways me nicely into project zomboid this is a game that hits every single aforementioned mark spot on in the survival genre therefore dear viewer whether you like it or not I'm going to spend the rest of this video telling you everything I love about this game and the few things I love a little less the game was released on the 8th of November 2013 by game develop veler the Indi Stone a team of originally four people working out of Canada and the United Kingdom with a single unified goal to create their vision of the ideal Zombie Survival game and I have to say they have raised the bar high for the genre as a whole project zomboid is an isometric open world and intense Survival game set in rural Kentucky just off the border of the Ohio river and be warned this game has got one inevitable outcome you will die no matter how good you think you are at the game no matter how many weapons you collect no matter how many cans of food you obtain you're going to die and most of the time it will be in the most creatively annoying and idiotic ways too for example you might trip over thin air and get eaten alive or you'll cut yourself on a fence and die of infection or drive your car into a tree at 120 mph or accidentally drink three bottles of bleach you get the idea the possibilities are endless but death is an absolute certainty and completely inevitable it literally tells you at the start of the game these are the end times there was no hope of survival this is how you die now I know what you're thinking right what is the point in putting in all that effort if I'm just going to die and I wouldn't blame you for thinking that however you're going to have to believe me when I say this is one of the best and most intensely addictive survival games I have in my gaming Arsenal the game starts up with a really neat and tidy menu screen with what looks like a man cradling a recently deceased woman suddenly though lightning flashes and you see he's actually ripping the flesh from a torso with his own teeth already it's giving you a gritty feel of what's to come that's a really clever ju position when you enter into a new game we're met with a screen that shows the various different modes and mods you can pick for your playthrough one thing I love about project zomboid is how broadly customizable your gaming experiences for now I'm going to show you a real Bare Bones playthrough and walk you through the very basic styles of playing in the character creation menu there are a ton of options to pick from including various occupations from your pre zombie infested life that give you certain perks and advantages to help you in the game these do however come at a cost for every Advantage you want to give yourself in the game you have to give yourself an equally taxing disadvantage to balance out your tradeit points basically there's no way to be op in this joint you want to have good night vision well I guess you're going to be clumsy to compensate good thing about these traits is that you can pick and choose which ones you want as long as you have a positive or Net Zero trait points by the end of it but like I said we're going to go completely bare this round and see how long we make it when you load into a new game you're usually dropped into a random house in the suburbs where the first thing I like to do is make sure I close curtains so no outside stragglers notice me then search the house for food water and some sort of weapon don't be fo into thinking you'll be safe staying in the first house you spawn into though they will find you eventually so once I K it up with what I could I headed out to check out the surrounding neighborhood houses stealth is insanely important in this game you can avoid detection fairly simply by crouching and keeping a respectful distance away from any zomboids whilst trying to make as little sound as possible at the same time and in early game combat is best avoided unless absolutely necessary and if you're new to the game I honestly say try and avoid it completely however once you get yourself more familiarized with it you'll easily be able to take on three or four at one time with nothing more than a rolling pin one really important thing to note if you're getting chased by more of them than you can handle as tempting as it might be do not run if you sprint away this early on in the game you're pretty much guaranteeing your doom it won't take you long until you overexert yourself to the point of barely being able to walk by which point you'll be turned into human and sashimi for all the undead around you instead it's actually super easy to just outwalk them as long as you have a bit of initial distance between you and your Hunter you should be able to get away from them by keeping a leisurely pace and doing short burst of jogging one super useful thing to find early on in the game is a watch these can be found on zomboids You' managed to defeat with digital ones displaying the date too as you can see you'll always be shown a starting the game on the 9th of July this is approximately 3 days after the US military established a blockade around infected areas of MRA Riverside West Point and Rosewood all of these locations are starting Point options for the beginning of the game but are still accessible in the game wherever you choose to start I came across a useful food source in this case a supermarket and I marked it on my maps so I know where to go back to from my meal deal once I've set up a base to Mark stuff on your map you're going to need a pencil or a pen another realistic touch that I love about the survival aspect of this game you're always going to need the relevant tools or knowledge to do anything you've hoarded that can of food well good luck without a can opener the power's gone out and you found a generator have fun hooking that out without finding the manual telling you how to do it walking down the street doing my best to avoid detection I stumbled across a medical center and decided it would be a good place to set up my base this was mainly for its abundance of Handy Dandy medical supplies but also because there was a fully furnished apartment building on the top floor which has its own advantages I got myself unpacked into my new apartment base and I put on the TV ready for life and living some very important beginner information to note in single player mode is that for the first nine days of the hours displayed on the screen right now there are certain educational TV shows such as carpentry cooking and fishing all of which are tremendously useful for your survival as each show will gain you XP in their respective categories really boosting your levels and allowing you to do more stuff to help you survive you can further boost your XP gain as well by reading the relevant books that you find during your Supply runs but the thing about reading is just like in real life it takes an insanely long time so I hope you enjoy the thrilling gameplay of watching your character sit on the floor tediously flicking through pages of electronics volume 1 through 5 thankfully though in single player mode you have the options to fast forward but it is important to note that speeding up through time will also in turn speed up your hunger thirst and tiredness which is indicated by different icons on the right hand side of the screen obviously this is something you really have to take into account these are really useful ways to keep the player informed on the status of your character you will get all too familiar with this side of the screen during your playthrough as it will an evitably light up like the beacons of Gondor before you meet your Grizzly end there is one heads scratching thing that does consistently bother me about this game though notice dear viewer how we're sitting on the floor in front of our television I can promise you that this isn't out of personal choice I it's completely due to the fact that there's no option to sit on chairs in the game without mods so yes that's right if you want the luxury of putting your feet up during your playthrough make sure you download the mod for it first I spent the next few days going on Supply runs watching life and living exercise and basically doing what I could to ensure I would be able to survive as long as possible once the power and water eventually run out oh yeah that's something that happens eventually there's no one running the power or water plants leading to the eventual collapse of the grids and Supply systems at some point in your game you're always going to want to try and clear out houses in the suburbs for their supplies this is because houses can usually provide you with everything you need early game without you having to risk running into a horde in the main streets and stores but be warned some houses will be a lot harder to break into than others some will be open and easy access others you will have to try Force windows open and climb through that way but sometimes forcing a window open will break the lock rendering it unopenable so your only option will be to smash it but make sure you clear out any broken glass first or else you'll risk lacerating yourself and bleeding to death one of the Dumber Ways to Die some houses will be alarmed as well and when I tell you this is the most single gut-wrenching sound you will hear in this game second only to Anonymous banging at your doors and windows of your base setting off an alarm means only one thing according to the project zomboid Wiki you've just alerted every zomboid in a 600 tile radius but looking at the map this covers an area larger than the town itself so I'm not really sure how true that is another good habit to get into is checking cars some will be unlocked and some will be unlocked with a swift smash of a window just make sure it isn't the driver's side window otherwise you make yourself an easily grabbable Target if your car gets surrounded if you're really really lucky some of these cars will have a key in the glove box but unfortunately this doesn't mean a godamn thing there were two other incidences that followed the nox event and that was immediately after when everyone threw all the sledgehammers in the river and drank all the gasoline from the Cars genuinely baffling how nearly every single car you come across has a completely empty gas tank but you can check the level of fuel and any other part of the car by pressing E when you're at the hood of the vehicle and as you can see every single part of the car is completely fixable as is able to be reinforced but this also means that every part of the car has a chance and likelihood of breaking down and ruining your driving experience but with enough mechanic books tools and a lot of trial and error you can patch it up using other vehicles around you for parts which I think is pretty great as for sledg hammers you will search every hardware store every tool shelf every utility closet and perhaps not find a single one you may though find one suddenly in someone's bedside drawer but only if you're stupidly lucky eventually your character will Tire of eating the same cold canned food day in day out and begin to get a bit depressed sounds like my student days I'd probably be a bit sad too after my seventh night of cold C ravioli best thing to do when your Supply runs is find a frying pan and a big pot to make use of the cooking section in the craft menu which will have more options the more you learn about cooking cooking actual Mills not only alleviates depression but is overall more nutritious that means you'll have more times of satiation between your next meals whilst on the run out for tools and almost getting run down at the storage facility a gunshot went off in a vague area alerting a lot of zomboids this is what's called a zomboid meta event zomboid meta events are offscreen simulated events or interactions of NPCs and zomboids between themselves and the environment whether this be a gunshot going off or a helicopter flying overhead you won't be able to find the source of the gunshot or where the helicopter flies off to however the zomboids will follow the sound of it which in the case of a helicopter can be a massive issue as during this event the helicopter will just track you drawing a hoard of zomboids to your location thing you're going to want to find early on is a backpack it's very easy to get weighed down with without one as well as really annoying and dangerous having to run back and forth from your base to keep picking up supplies therefore finding a backpack or a duffel bag early on can give you a great advantage in the game at this point I nearly got bitten by a zomboid luckily my leather jacket protected me different clothing has varying different levels of protection from bites and scratches and this is indicated if you hover over it in your inventory ranging from absolutely no protection at all to full-on bulletproof but even the best protection will wear away after continuous usage in wear and tear getting back to my base I found it have been infiltrated by a couple of Undead for a broken window I made quick work of the them but I decided I need to find enough tools and weapons to fortify my base the in-game map is revealed to you as you explore the area but whilst exploring you will come across various Town Maps which will reveal the whole place on your map one map I marked is Louisville a city you cannot originally spawn in but is said to have hosted the largest original outbreak and possibly with a virus originated in the first place you would definitely need a car and lots of supplies and skills to get yourself there successfully I was starting to think I'd done really well for myself in this run that was until the helicopter found me during this event this thing incessantly follows you around drawing every zomboid around to your exact location obviously not wanting them to ambush my base I took off on foot to draw them elsewhere and found myself at abandoned storage unit facility but that's when disaster struck there were just too many of them and I got bitten I managed to lock myself into a unit and it was only a matter of time before they were going to break down the door my choices were succumb to the bite and become one of them or take my own life [ __ ] it I'm not going down without a fight I'm going to die fighting and that didn't last long I do find it awesome and you can see yourself reanimate and you can follow your corpse around this is even cooler if you're playing in multiplayer and you can watch yourself try and tear your friends apart I built a new character and this time I actually picked an occupation and various traits I decided to go with burglar as this is the best choice for those who prefer to sneak past the zomboids rather than get into a fight and it also gives you the ability to hot wire cars which is incredibly useful as long as you can find some unconsumed gas the negative traits I chose were high thirst overweight smoker and shortsighted giving me enough points to add catze Outdoorsman inconspicuous and Runner and I gave my character the very fitting name of Robin Banks right off the bat I found a car and a garage with incredibly a full gas can everything was going extremely well after this point as I tactically use the rear end of my car to permer raise a ton of zombo outside a pub so I could use that as my Base building up my skills enough to fully secure it from anything I began to relax a little but like every other time I played this game the comfort and safety did not last long and like every playthrough of this game ended with a dramatic and gruesome fate finally let's have a look into what I think is the greatest addition to this game the addition of multiplayer mode it really places project zomboid even higher on its insanely lofty pedestal because what is more fun than struggling to survive countless environmental and physical attempts on your life doing it with friends I've brought my friend David along and together we set out to make the most fortified base we could setting up in twiggy's Pub we went out to collect as many materials as we could and in doing so it made me laugh because in Project onb boid we just assume there is no other survivors out there therefore we go and completely unashamedly ransack houses but could you imagine being a lone survivor out on a supply run only to come home and find that someone has dismantled all of your furniture the barefaced audacity it didn't take long for my first character to get bitten and bites are predictably 100% fatal there's the square root of fuckle you can do to avoid the on setting infection so I sat by the campfire we made just outside the pub and remembered all the good times we had before Dave Mercy murdered me quickly making yet a new character I set off to go and find the pub yet another thing I absolutely love about this game is if you die the world and timeline of project zomboid still goes meaning that when you respawn all of your stuff will be right where you left it or walking around attached to your reanimated corpse we set ourselves up a solid base with a full arsenal Woodfire cooker generator and rainwater C collectors fully ready for when [ __ ] hits the fan and the power goes out we're still playing on this little server right now but if you're a budding zombie player and want to get involved I'm going to be setting up a full server of my own soon so get yourself in the Discord server and keep up to date with us overall it's the high quality level of detail that sets project zomboid apart from every other Survival game with small details going such an incredibly Long Way There are not many details the developers of project zomboid have left out of this fantastic game it is truly a shining example of the genre and if you couldn't tell already one of my favorite survival games to date I hope you enjoy this installment of the worst Survival game ever series and to answer the question is this the worst Survival game ever
