hey everybody i'm jason bent and welcome to another five minute friday i have the nova viking drill press in my shop the reason why i have this in my shop is because when i moved from my previous shop i had the large floor standing powermatic and to be quite honest with you i just really didn't want to move it i didn't want to deal with moving it so i ended up selling that use that money to buy this so i could downsize to a bench top model in this shop i'll zoom in here just to give you an idea of the display that's on here and let you know some of the standard features that come with this so this has zero belts it is a direct drive motor it is extremely quiet the motor actually sits on top of the unit right here it has a variable speed control that you can control with this knob obviously it has a digital readout it has programmable depth control uh which i'm going to kind of walk you through just how you do all those things and then give you an example of exactly how it works couple of other key features is it does have a laser and a light or a combination of the two and there's actually an option where you can self start by simply pulling down you can set it to where when you pull down on the handle it actually starts and when you go back up to the top it actually stops on this side of the drill press you've got all your specifications any of the tools are all you know stored on board which is nice this is just a magnetized wrench and then you have your on off switch right over here all right so i'm going to briefly go through some of the different features and things that you can do with this so it's as simple as an on off switch and now you can actually hear how quiet it is it's an extremely quiet drill press not that many drill presses are very loud but if i want to adjust the speed i can adjust the speed up or down digitally i can slow it all the way down to 100 revolutions per minute if i want but it's really nice to just be able to quickly set whatever speed you want for whatever the application you're doing is so before i zoom out a little bit and go through a demonstration uh the self-start all you have to do is hit self-start i pull down on the handle and it begins once i lift up it turns off the reverse option if i want it to go in the reverse direction i can by placing that turning it on and it's now spinning in the reverse direction so there's a couple other things that you can do here so i can go through the display if i want to see the rpms and i want to turn it down so i'm using a forstner bit for the demonstration so i'm going to go ahead and turn this down so we'll just put it there for now if i want to switch the power that the drill is using and uh what the depth is i have mine set to millimeters you can have it set in imperial or metric you have an emergency off switch here which you just put a push in if you want to stop it immediately emergency stop and then you can pull it out and it turns that off you have the laser and light function right now the laser is a cross hair style design it's very very easy to adjust if i just want the light i can push it again and if i just want the laser i can push it again and then i can turn it off and have both of them off completely all right so now i want to talk about the depth setting and this is the one question that i always get the most uh when i'm talking about this drill press and everybody is always so interested in and so i want to set the depth so the first thing i want to do is right now you can see with this all the way up it's set to zero so the first thing that i can do is actually pull this down to where i'm touching the material and i can hit zero that is now the starting point see how it goes to negative 13.6 when i go all the way back up so now this is the starting point of my cut okay so i've established that now i want to do set depth i'm going to set depth to 5 millimeters i'm going to hit confirm and now i know that when i start cutting obviously it's going to be cutting at the zero and it's going to go down five millimeters let me give you an example now before i go any deeper i want to highlight the depth stop is on and i'm sure you guys could probably hear that beeping that beeping is to let you know how close you are to the setting that you want so now if i go down in here okay i've already drilled 3.2 millimeters into this so i still have a little bit more to go when this hits five you're gonna see it stop it's gonna reverse directions so let me show you [Laughter] okay so i'm gonna check the depth real quick and i am at five millimeters so whatever you set that to it's going to go the depth that you want so since this is a five minute friday this is really just a brief overview to show you some of the features but i do want to highlight on that last part being the depth setting this is one of the things that people i think have the biggest misconception about and that is i will always get exactly perfect every single time that's not necessarily true you do have to understand that you are still controlling this drill press so if i was just wrenching down on that thing really hard it's not gonna not allow me to pull down any further than five millimeters i can continue to push that thing all the way through so an example of that if i'm using a brad point bit or something like that in the drill press where it cuts very quickly i very well could go past the setting because i'm going fast enough to where it can't keep up with it then it reverses obviously it's not going to be making the cut it slows down the bit dramatically but you absolutely can go past the depth that you have it set to so if you're smart about it if you get this and think that just understand that you do still need to control it it is not like an end-all be-all so i'm going to close this video out by you know kind of giving you my experience and my impressions of the machine and my thoughts on the machine i am not somebody that uses a drill press on every project to be completely honest with you i really don't use a drill press all that much it's one of those tools that when you need it it's really really nice to have but it's not something that like i'm always trying to find reasons to go use it which kind of goes with why i decided to get rid of the large floor standing one and went to something smaller like this bench top model now with that being said there are way cheaper options out on the market for bench top model drill presses and would i have been fine with one of those and the answer is 100 absolutely yes however i sold the powermatic got good money for it took that money reinvested it back into this one i don't regret it by any means i don't want anybody to think that i regret purchasing that but is it overkill for what i need to drill press for i'll be the first to admit yes it absolutely is the features are cool it's a very nice drill press it's very quiet i enjoy using it every time but it's an expensive drill press for being a benchtop but it does have some pretty cool technology so that's it for this five minute friday everybody if you guys have suggestions please send me a dm over on instagram uh send me an email leave them in the comment section down below go to my website fill out the form you can submit your request there i'll take all of them i really enjoy doing these five minute fridays as always everybody thank you for watching and i'll see you in the next video thanks
