welcome back friends to the shop so in today's video we're gonna be unveiling what it was it was hiding in the Amazon box in yesterday's video many of you guessed it and indeed it is the cheapest drill press on Amazon [Music] [Music] and of course the third and the final item that we'll be mounting onto the common man's tool workbench is the drill press those that that makes up the three items that granddad had on his bench we had the vise and the drill press and the bench grinder let's take a look at this was actually a pretty easy decision on deciding which one to get because there just wasn't a lot to choose from the discrepancy in price was pretty pronounced in that this one here was did I mention it was 81 I think I paid eighty one dollars on Amazon delivered and I was a little bit skeptical about that because that's that seems awfully cheap right what can you possibly get for that but the ratings were we're really good a lot of guys bought this and we're pretty happy with it and I know you know this is not the highest quality stuff I mean of course you know we all know that but you know we're this series is kind of moving in the direction of helping guys out that are just getting started so they don't have a lot of money to dump into the stuff you know maybe that'd be upgrade later so who knows maybe this thing is not any good at all we're gonna find out so let's put it together and then we'll test it and see how it performs let's assemble this guy here we've got good old American 9/16 Imperial standard bolts thank you very much none of your confusing metric system it's kind of nice at the base is threaded they don't have to have any bolts on there so the sweetloves feeling a lot better today that poor little thing we put her to bed last night she wouldn't go down and finally about ten o'clock or so she finally went to sleep one of these threads is not a little bit tight there and she slept until this morning and Mrs W gave her a bath and she's actually oh that's cross threading good grief I thought that they didn't feel a rena shoulda we might need to chase that it's just gonna give us trouble it's gonna make me go they got my tap and dye kit it almost feels like the bolt is maybe bent the bolt is bent well I might have to head over to granddad's storage drawers there see it wasn't find once again granddad's bolt drawer saves the day actually had a bent bolt let us not forget of course this stuff is built down to a price point so we can't have unrealistic expectations here feels good and solid now we can mount our it's nicely yeah oh I see what that allen wrenches for there's a little grub screw on there there's not really any way to index this with the base other than you just kind of have to eyeball it what let's lock tight we'll lock take this with the red since this is gonna be a permanent we don't want this to come loose and I I like the lock tight on the Chinese iam because the Chinese iam doesn't like to be over tightened now your checks on your drill presses most of the time as far as I've ever known are gonna be a friction fit well we got the metric system again 1.5 to 13 millimeters not exactly happy about that but it is what it is so what we have here is a tapered shaft and these will just press up so don't pound on your on your Chuck with a metal hammer if you have a brass hammer you can use that brass being softer than the steel if you don't if you don't have either just go ahead and tap it with a block of wood but usually a couple of good wraps will seated in there and the more you use it the more it will tighten up let's take a look at this Chuck it's a little gritty put a little lubricant on there yeah that already feels better I think red loctite San order here I don't you know sometimes you just fight something your whole life and you never think about it my drill press that I have in my woodshop these knobs I must have tightened them a thousand times they're you know they're just always coming loose and I you know it's just something you deal with you know you don't think about it cuz you have your mind and other things the guy would take a second and thread lock that and you would it's just one less thing to worry about right looks like there's a little cutout for wrench to tighten these - these are chrome-plated they look pretty nice I saw a guy one time that had replaced his knobs on his drill press with three golf balls I thought that was the coolest thing what do you say we try it out see how it how it drills well I'll clamp it down to the bench here this right here is why you always leave an overhang on your bench never cut the top flush to the crossmember because you'll never be able to clamp anything unless you have massive clamps if you want to change your rpms it's quite simple on these I typically like to run at a slower speed Tampa I know there are different speeds different speed set it for different materials I don't know all that those all are but I guess you can never go wrong with slow speeds so you can just look at your gauge and you'll see the different how the pulleys the stacked pulleys there are and we want the slow one so we want the belt to be all the way the bottom so usually I'll run it off the teeth off or off the grooves on the smaller side and that'll free up give you some a little bit of slack there and then you just kind of push down a little bit roll it and then it'll just walk itself on to the next pulley [Music] [Music] here's a drill press tool that my granddad built to help in when you have to drill something round this is just made from four pieces of quarter inch angle iron and how it works is if you have to drill let's say you need to drill a hole through like a broom handle to put a bolt through or a piece of round stock you'll chase it all around on your table with your drill press and this will hold it securely it doesn't have any place to go so you'll sit that there and then that will adjust for any size of stock you can go a little tiny stuff or stuff it's big but kind of a clever little simple design homemade this was a this typical granddad would make things like this he would never buy hardly anything if he could make it he would make it so what's my take on the wind drill press well we got to start with the price right $81 shipped what type of expectations can a guy have right I'll have to say honestly it exceeded my expectations what would I think if you were just if I were to went through this whole experience and assembled it someone like someone had given it to me and I didn't know what it costs I would say I would guess a hundred and fifty dollars 125 to 150 that's what I'd guess so an 81 that's a pretty good deal is the build quality excellent no does it give you the fizz is there anything about it it's like really nice no it's not not super smooth a little bit of vibration a little bit of rattling noises but you know a lot of metal in it you know like the whole top I mean I've seen more expensive drill bit drill presses it didn't have a had a plastic top instead of a metal on there and lots of just little things so it's totally used usable I would get I would say that it's 100% serviceable for just a common guy for just a garage type of deal not heavy industrial but just drilling once in a while and doing projects and different things it's it's a great little it's a great little option I mean I would rather have this than no drill press I'll tell you that for sure actually it's gonna be really nice to have in the shop because the little drill press that I have now is about the same size as this one is in the woodshop and what I find myself doing is drilling by hand and lacking that precision because I don't want to go to the effort of walking and taking all my stuff into another building so for that reason alone to me it's worth having so I'm I'm again I'm impressed with though the wind tools because as I said early at the beginning of the video there was just there was nothing else to compare it with everything else was so much more expensive albeit probably better quality but there wasn't anything else that was close there was a couple things in the same price range but they were just crucified by the reviews guys didn't like them at all this one was kind of the exception so are we gonna keep it or we gonna add it to the common man's tool bench now we are we're gonna put it right next side to the grinder so one last thing I need you guys is a piñon on this before we move on to the next part because I can't quite figure it out in my own mind let's talk about placement [Music] so this guy's is the most important question of the whole project and it's the placement of this stuff I'm trying to think back on how granddad's bench was now his was short I'd say probably 6 feet or so he had as you walked up to it he had the vise on the left the drill press on the far right and I believe he had his little bench grinder on the side yeah I do think so I was trying I was trying to remember that this morning he had the bench grinder on the same on the side of it like opposite here closer to the vise and that gave him a lot more room the problem with this is is we've got we do have almost close to 6 feet of clear space boy that fills up quick when you have something long when you're working on long projects and this is taking up a lot of space so I'm gonna give you three options here and let's talk about this in the comments so we can make the right call option number one is the vices set that's not moving option number one is gonna be like we see here we've got the bench grinder on the outside we've got the drill press right next to it option number two would be to push the drill press to the outside but to push the bench grinder basically a flip-flop but what we have here option number three and I one of them think I'm kind of liking is do we put the bench grinder on the side so you access it on the side that way freeing up you know I'm picking up another foot on the bench which is really important yeah so one is the way it is number two flip flop it number three push the drill press to the edge put the bench grinder on the side option four would be putting it on the side of the vise I think that's what granddad's was now if you don't have room if you got a really tiny space and you can't get to the sides of your bench you know that's gonna be a problem so there isn't it's not like there's just one decision here that's gonna be the perfect call it's gonna depend on your on the area but assuming that we have three feet on each side where a guy can get around to the sides let me know in the comments what you guys think and why don't just don't just give out a number because you think but think about it so that we can make the right call here and we can use our collective experience to help guys out because you know you're gonna be if you built this at 18 right you could be effective essentially still working on it at 80 so it's not a it's not a small decision is it is an important decision to get it right and well there's safety in numbers right safe teen council all right well next time we've got a lot of fun stuff coming up we I think we'll get the legs on next time Ken sent a whole bunch of cool stuff we've got that we finally got the power Sharpe system the chainsaw power Sharpe system with the proper bar so I'm gonna I'm really excited to try that to see if that is a go or a no-go on that and and some other really cool stuff that he said so thank you for that Ken more to follow on that so as always keep my family in your prayers and may God bless you and your families as well don't forget the Sabbath starts tonight at sunset and [Music] we'll see you guys on the next video [Music]
