[Music] [Music] we find the first mysterious place in Taiwan our translator Shawn will take us there apparently there's a place on the north of the island with very extraordinary almost extraterrestrial houses last year just a little further at the edge of the town suddenly the area is deserted we spot the first UFO house on a hill it looks like something from an old science-fiction film as well as UFOs there are also futuristic angular buildings here it seems to be an entire village neglected abandoned and decaying we find signs of previous occupation in several places people really used to live here [Music] why did they abandon the place we decide to have a closer look at the houses but the first one we try is hopeless be careful when you go inside there's no floor we'd still like to take a look [Music] at least through the locked door was that an apartment what happened to make people abandon this place the village must have been empty for many years everything is so weather-beaten our investigation continues [Music] the neighboring UFO is easier to get into and astonishingly well-preserved there's the window open till we try and get through it's a good idea will we find information about why and when the residents abandoned their houses [Music] the weather has left its mark on the houses the kitchen and overall design are very retro reminiscent of the 1970s perhaps it was intended to be an exclusive seaside holiday resort next to the living area we find what was the bedroom signs of life everywhere [Music] but what must have happened to make people move out translator sean has an idea [Music] to take a guess if have to be something to do with the weather now wintertime it's kind of cold and no heating this place would not be easy and then summertime it's it's super hot is just be like living in the glass house you know it's not brick this stuff just gonna absorb heat like nothing else Shawn's suggestion sounds plausible in summer temperatures rise as high as 40 degrees in Van Lee the external walls and the entire bathroom appear to be made of some sort of plastic not good insulation we look for clues as to how long this house has been empty a newspaper can you see a date on that okay March the 5th 91 so maybe 15 years ago 91911 in Taiwan years 91 Taiwan has its own way of calculating dates the Ming wall calendar begins with the founding of the country in the year 1912 [Music] so if you're in the kitchen I'm feeling kind of hungry yes darling hums taking fries please but the cupboards are empty the frying pan rusty no lunch for Shawn 15 years ago something must have happened to make the residents leave the place we decide to ask in a nearby hotel perhaps somebody there knows something about the mysterious place all the people who lived here mrs. Chen who works in the hotel takes us up to the rooftop terrace with a view of the UFO village does she know the story of the abandoned place to be no hostile enemy entire eager King Kong Kong she the nineteen saw consulate I'd see the whole town sala consilina me that you're reducing that you don't know what was it supposed to be so why did you build this to be no heart hasn't paid real fancy was she young like that my the wire the sneer came jealous of all what Jasmine Lee paid out to be a boob job I don't do that why I counselor had learned when he going sounds hey double checked I see you're a job dude a stronger the UFO village seems to be an example of bad planning built at the beginning of the 1970s gradually abandoned at the end of the 1970s the holiday village by the sea was the vision of businessman mr. su Ming it was to be a place for the wrench and beautiful rent in the 1970s was the equivalent of a hundred and forty dollars a day it was conceived as a place of joy and life but today his vision is an abandoned village not only the weather was the problem though behind the UFO village we discover an overgrown Cemetery [Music] Taiwanese people are extremely superstitious and they worship their ancestors most believe that if a grave is not looked after the spirits will rise up [Music] superstition one reason why people no longer wanted to live here it even prevents many Taiwanese people from going to the sea at certain periods [Music] have a ghost month in the middle of summer where you cannot go into the water you can't go near the beach it's a time they believe the gates of Hell have opened and all the ghosts are wandering the earth especially all the ocean ghosts people have died and ship breaks you know over throughout history so the worst place to go is in the water so you don't go to the beach you don't go swimming July is the ghost month when Taiwanese people go to great lengths to avoid the beach hardly a good prerequisite for a holiday resort among the ruins we discover one house which seems to be in good condition we knock at the door [Music] sure enough somebody is living here Oh mr. Tao is a friendly host he even turns his heating on for a straight away [Music] woman the judge in that one by you're not a good hint remove that only to your examples are super clumsy a cleanser najat it's unlikely that mr. Tao gets many visitors perhaps that's one reason he is so proud to show us his little home city it's a girly normal that way coach I'm without a fabulous read that's a good thumbs SOG sounds like a toast you sooner eh if you if I heat hissing she mr. Tao has been living in Vonleh for thirty years he's been in the UFO village for six years rent-free the town tolerates his presence here so it's only cause I own a shank Obi Wan Jia Nagisa it's a total that a so hot depends it's an integer and the job which are super windy now just be agenda enough and then you can choose your child and your heart in the summer he rents out jet skis at the neighboring Hotel in the winter he enjoys his spare time here the hot rainy weather doesn't bother him air conditioning and a dehumidifier keep his home comfortable but mr. Tao seems to have shut himself away here almost as though he doesn't want to see the abandoned village the negative energy of jets anyhow you can gain change in the palatial Shaanxi Natalie and she entered a young tree tree as usual he really found Hammond yeah me like nah yeah me right so you mirror I see on Google when the trans in you poor dear if only trading I did submission do tree choose paths follow the Pamir and true neither why aren't antenna so your entire to your channel each is joking games engine news channel on Jenna found from the Fanta took a formula como mi cuenta which you see she's run on the Ganges then two hours later mr. Tao reveals to our surprise that he isn't the only person living here in the Rowan's his neighbor's an elderly couple are good friends of his mr. Tao even has a key to their house which has video surveillance since for the koala a typhoon door right a door that protects the house from the stormy sea what we find here surrounded by all the abandoned ruined houses is a huge surprise mr. tose neighbor has created a luxury home with expensive model planes plenty of high-tech equipment and a massage chair be paid though yo te pay though you're feeling pay that you'll do your the mail now you and I change it was a Zealand now homey and ottoman says you say shall watch out you don't even though you didn't know you're deep as a even thumb do you mr. Tao tells us that the owner is a wealthy businessman who used to work in Hong Kong for the last 15 years he's been living in the UFO village with his wife as a recluse to be neutral la trova hiring manager Fang whatever the reason a man like this chooses to live here he certainly invested a lot of money so far he had to spend over eighty four thousand dollars just on storm damage I want that sunlight again sue you sue oh you penalize young found Isaiah chola jamia tangibly chop away 20 quaint song lights and go coins analyze what type whale originally there were 93 houses in the UFO village today only two are still lived in you know from being yelled quiet she's a series of yeah that Simeon Jews these are truthful to the heck yeah but for mr. Tao it is precisely this inconvenience that gives the place a charm of its own he likes the quiet atmosphere here peace and quiet between all the ruined houses and the sea it's a vineyard beer can kinda be a pure energy holidays I see went ahead it took 18 grams held out behind mr. Taos house the last remnant of a dream of a man and his vision to build a peaceful holiday village from UFOs today it's a mysterious place that has become the home of reclusive individuals our journey now leads us to Arizona USA our next mysterious place is the location of the biggest aeroplane cemetery in the world from the ground we can hardly make out the incredible size it's gigantic area ten point five two square kilometers in other words about the size of 1300 football pitches the plain cemetery is home to around 4,000 aircraft over 600 people work in this enormous space what exactly goes on here [Music] when these implements of war have done their job they end up with John his team demilitarized is the old war planes and what exactly does that mean for the aircraft the demilitarization is when we take the aircraft and remove basically all the military aspects of the aircraft so that we can prep it in process if the demos and then we'll crush the aircraft into once I win it one inch squares for recyclable metal and then and then the money goes back to the government from there his team has just removed this electronic radar guidance component it goes to a shop they open it up pull the hazardous out of it and then the rest of it does get scrapped which will later also be the fate of the empty plain fuselage the aircraft has had a long life cycle protecting the US and other other interests throughout the world so as we come to the end of the life it is sad to see some of these aircraft go and the missions and the stories that are all tied behind each aircraft that's out there Americans seem to have a special relationship to their military equipment however we also discover ruined planes in the biggest aircraft cemetery in the world which appear to have been forgotten in fact they are here for a very particular reason this is the largest property in the possession of the American armed forces which makes it easily visible to Russian satellites at the end of the 1990s the Americans had to take 350 b-52 bombers out of action the reason a disarmament agreement or 60 days they left them out in the open here until the Russian surveillance satellites confirmed that however helicopters and aircraft are not only brought here so it can be their last resting place some of them are resurrected so to speak which is why the 400 aircraft that arrived here each year must be prepared accordingly this is the job of Jeff the storage flight chief and his team aircraft coming in will immediately take it and safe it for maintenance we'll check it for any munitions on board and we'll handle those accordingly then we'll totally D fuel the aircraft of any fuel and we'll we'll put on at what's called a 10-10 preservative fluid this lines all the the fuel tanks and the fuel lines this way a possible future awaits them smaller aircraft like this helicopter of all moving parts removed including the rotor blades to preserve the metal body work the team sprays two coats of black paint over it it takes between 40 and 60 days to get aircraft ready to be stored in the desert the most important thing is the final coat of white paint [Music] finally the white keeps the reflective it has a reflective property if you will so it keeps the internal temperatures of the aircraft down to a manageable level less deterioration Jeff flew helicopters for the US Air Force for 20 years and for the last 10 years he's been preparing them for storage for him every day here is special if only these planes could talk Wow I mean how cool place you wake up every single morning and you may go do the same thing day after day after day here in a mark we come out and we have 50 different mission design series aircraft how cool is that when the packaged planes are ready for the desert they end up with the flight chief mark a kind of cemetery warden he explains to us why this desert area provides perfect conditions [Music] low humidity is probably the biggest condition that we have out here that inhibits corrosion the second reason is the soil compaction in the type right below our feet is caliche soil which is a clay and when it's very dry it's very hard you don't have to pave everything mix it cheap destroy yourself and it may be for many years this b-57 bomber for example has been in the Arizona desert for almost 50 years and although it's been here a long time and the paint's just beginning to fade it's still sound and it's still in great shape and the fact that it's been here so long almost 50 years and we could still regenerate this for flight today absolutely amazing that's right the planes in the biggest aircraft cemetery on the planet really could rise into the air once again because modern fighter jets are also parked here the people responsible for resurrection are flight chief Chris and his crew this transport plane is his latest project this airplane came in used to belong to the United States Marine Corps about 910 years ago they put it into the desert and then the Japanese Navy came in and they purchased the airplane but before it can be handed over to the customer the team has to checkout the entire plane for the last six months they've been taking a close look at every cable every linkage and every screw after all the plane has been in the desert for a decade today it's ready for a first engine check [Music] we're trying to get the airplane so we'll be air worthy and we'll fly so these guys will check the systems to make sure everything works as it should I usually yes they'll start usually sometimes we'll have one that likes to give us problems but it's not a problem sure enough the first three engines start up just fine but the fourth doesn't quite make it Chris and his team have to get back to work but resurrecting the dead is a dream job for them it's really it's really satisfying because these guys are all most of them are ex Air Force so we all grew up with aircraft we're all in the Air Force so coming out here three doing these airplanes is pretty pretty nice they get up to thirty planes a year flying once again not only transport aircraft but also fighter jets like this f-16 in this way the Air Force attempts to recoup at least some of the high costs in total the warplanes slumbering in this gigantic aircraft cemetery were once worth thirty five billion dollars like the lockheed c-5 once the biggest transport plane in the world today most of them are broken up for scrap three hundred and fifty thousand parts become available this way like this engine from a Black Hawk helicopter almost 2,000 horsepower it was sleeping in the desert for seven years but now the US Navy needs a replacement engine as quickly as possible no problem within 24 hours the engine has been delivered individual parts can also be ordered like these hydraulic engine components first they are subjected to high pressure cleaning and then have to pass a thorough inspection after all they haven't been in use for many years and they've been stored in the desert if a part were ever installed that didn't work properly it could cost human lives the man responsible for all this is Rick in this tank here it's an oil-based liquid that has a fluorescent dye in it that will fluoresce under a blacklight he submerges the valve in the liquid and waits half an hour this way the liquid can penetrate any possible cracks the valve is then washed and placed in a contact liquid washed again and then dried with an industrial heater the last part of the security check is the black lamp tent [Music] the area that I would be looking at is right here and it is a solid color all the way across if it were cracked it would bleed out the bright yellow again I don't see anything wrong with this part each year 10,000 spare parts are dispatched to American forces Allied forces and friendly nations right after the Vietnam War 6,000 planes were stored here a record ever since the number has been declining year on year from America we now head to Laos there is said to be a bomb village here though the country has experienced considerable growth it is still damaged from the Vietnam War u.s. forces dropped so many bombs on Laos it became the most heavily bombed place in the world we are in search of the bomb village this man directs us to a small village in the middle of the jungle we enter Zn Quang province just under 600 people live in this little place most of them farmers or fishermen at the bank of the river we spot a boat that looks like part of a bomber it belongs to a fisherman called who the name of the what's up with the plane came bombs as well the adult salvaged the explosive charges since they represent valuable raw materials for the poor rural population [Music] the fisherman who tells us about a village where some families have specialized in recycling bonds so we continue our journey [Music] two hours later we reach Napier it's the place we've been looking for the entire village looks like an Arsenal [Music] but nobody here is afraid of the bombs anymore the explosive charges have all been removed [Music] cien theft has been recycling bomb parts for 10 years but not every bomb can be melted down / tournament banana luhan behind open Sidley lemon meelo the solenoid that was a model come no one said oh na na boo me and said let me keep cap nearly midnight many of the explosive charges dropped during the war didn't explode ticking time bombs to understand how CN Fett gets hold of the bombs we have arranged to meet a bomb disposal unit in the jungle specialists in bomb disposal travel all around the country to find unexploded ordnance they use cord to fence off the area they are searching as precisely as possible [Music] meandering to track down it me luck safar 6000 unit then the metal detector is employed despite the safety precautions the work is still dangerous bula-bula were 230 aunt Eliza little turtle this is the man responsible for blowing up the bombs and mines former Marine Biaggio de Silva the kid are the more vulnerable people for this kind of item because they are coolers and you see the shape is like a ball and so is very attractive for kill the archer is familiar with the danger he has worked on hundreds of missions like this now for safety reason we have to move to a safety distance and the team leader will proceed with the briefing with his team about the Sentry and movement control over the area clearance of the earlier and preparation for the demolition [Music] animals have to be evacuated as well a violent Eva how and doing signing of taka tip you kill a bird man what tipped averted mean support I don't know [Music] the bomb has been successfully exploded and the danger is over although there isn't much left of the bomb to be recycled back in base camp hood ma shows us the metal recovered from larger bombs they have blown up this week the raw material that's left goes to people like the spoon maker [Music] buna invites us to her parents house her village has been cleared of bombs but the forests around haven't a big motivation for the 26 year old it's the only way she can protect her cousins nephews and nieces [Music] either moved XII to Santa see how to meet women Samak Divac our how nice what you want na you're not very helpful cuz he her family and her parents home are an oasis of tranquility for boon mom in her kitchen we find all sorts of household objects made from scrap bones a bizarre scene none say they exhibit but the one coolness of mine yeah Paul componet been born and lo not Kira holder and a siphon bowls pots spoons all made of aluminium once used in bombs but how exactly is it done this is the man who should know spoon maker CN fed he started this small foundry with his brother 10 years ago and since then he's been making spoons from old bombs he also made the molds he uses business is booming lots of the villagers by their spoons from him [Music] come on see Hannah Leah hmm 101 CNN Jana and who Honeyman one more turn horn time and wanna dive it alone Kanaka die ready he used to search the forest himself for the remains of bombs he won clean food good lowball ID like I was not buying anything with some money and will know him and God will fight a lot like a horror movie and Lamonica will buy it for some years now CN Fett has been getting aluminum from the bomb specialists and he makes 800 spoons a day this way his nephew vet helps him yeah and you ignore like a young [ __ ] pilot by home he and so mu me who can not keep all about you man who bought this on here look up island [Music] each spoon cost the equivalent of fifty five cents at the moment the spoon makers customers are from the surrounding villages but in future he also plans to sell his products to tourists in complete of Huntington the hit lay on you there was only an American young fool the latter allied with the latter hung up like a futon car liner the war is almost forgotten but the danger of unexploded bombs is still very real these people have taken their destiny in their own hands and made something positive out of the deadly remains of war a village full of bombs perhaps it couldn't exist anywhere else except here we find our next mysterious place in Thailand the search begins with this puzzling picture there are people lying in coffins but they don't appear to be dead it looks more like some kind of ritual what's going on here and what do the Buddhist monks have to do with it [Music] we have come to Bangkok the capital city of Thailand here we simply trust to luck armed with the photograph we start asking passers-by and to our surprise the scene in the photograph doesn't strike them as unfamiliar or odd Jami ha ha ha coconut clanging condominum well China [Music] get on bus number 46 to wash away bad luck maybe not it just sounds too strange but the next time we ask we have more success we meet a monk who can tell us more about the picture and even the ki Fateh power similar to mark duncan Pinacate for Thunderhead of turnip in da luta to anaconda Yahoo so the coffins in the photograph are part of a Buddhist ritual and apparently we need to travel to a place called knock-on Nayak it's two hours drive north east of Bangkok in the first monastery of the town we get more helpful information all of you are family if anybody what name the baby gonna so we are almost there but when we reach what is supposed to be the right monastery it is a strange sight this isn't how we had pictured a temple this place looks like the covered market there are stores everywhere selling fruit vegetables meat and snacks is this really supposed to be a Buddhist monastery the competition illumina my love Charlie you know the level of Americans if not he naka Hyundai TV cumbersome to competition doctrinal Omega one in long to become happy piece of it seems to be the right place after all this lady with a microphone is talking about a coffin ceremony and buying tickets further inside the monastery we meet proper he has come here from Bangkok especially for this ceremony never happy when I come here I love hablaba but we level dial up in terms of do whatever botanical we accept his offer apparently the first service is already over but we're in luck a sign at the ticket office states that death happens twice a day here so we can watch but to take part rapper needs an admission ticket it's in the form of a donation because officially monks live lives of poverty and are therefore forbidden to accept actual money and even Pope tiene gives it Yallah fell over the battle to sum up the situation there are coffins somewhere here a box with toilet paper plasters and medicine but what this is all about we still don't know so now we've come to ask the abbot the senior monk in the monastery he finally explains the curious picture Suribachi oedema while Papa men succeed and live the moon time well amico honey I'm like [ __ ] ticker done a significant lighten pony I die amigo but here dear let's immediate album cover the magma hi partner and it's precisely in order to die briefly that proper has come here today as well [Music] gotta go tell them to be Yellin the monastery has well over 100 clients each day whether the monks really need that much toilet paper and plasters is questionable later we discovered that the boxes are always resold but having your soul healed or the equivalent of two euros is still a bargain we venture into the temple with rapper and see them the coffins from the picture but they're empty nobody inside everyone just walks past the reason before the communal deaths before it is allowed to lie in the coffins a service is held its to prepare the faithful for their brief period of death this ritual is in fact very old it is said to date back to the Buddha himself but in ancient times only old or sick people would lie in a coffin by means of the ritual rebirth the faithful believe people get new strength they are healed or given the ability to live longer or in Queensland dying all the time with only one game I hope it allows me to get a man Merida also maladies team Queen come even go to Macau because I'm Claire dying isn't all you can do here people come on a pilgrimage to find happiness at one of the many stalls monks draw signs on people's foreheads it is believed that this improves their karma the abbot provides mass blessings naturally in return for a small donation you can stick gold on to the statues of the monastery and walk around an elephant's leg it's all believed to make life more beautiful and if you want to test your newfound luck you can lottery ticket sellers have gathered in the monastery and stalls selling vegetables and everyday items [Music] allegedly the monasteries income comes mainly from donations that he'll never break down see what they're but die sorting out Bible enough but these are called say dance a lot and man I didn't want my water some of them would they live are you a psychopath campaign what taught see what family thought Danny finally the time has come now people will lie in the coffins the procedure is organized with military precision you stand and wait your turn dying takes place in groups of nine the reason nine is a lucky number in Buddhism so the first service of the day starts at exactly nine minutes past nine the 100 baht about 2 euros 50 is to be placed underneath the pillow this way you die symbolically on top of money and it is hoped that in your new life you will be blessed with wealth well afford my [ __ ] my [ __ ] in the teleport tell them up in fancy or you know some of the Tao the first prayer the prayer for the dead is incidentally the one recited by monks at a genuine funeral it's followed by the prayer for rebirth [Music] [Music] rubber now has to lie down close his eyes and think of the evil in his life that way it leaves his body and the bad karma remains behind in the coffin [Music] they long saab della Thornton gone so Canada zoton calera pom didn't want holiday Sun stop so Todd to come well at the tablet is up so torn up from the moon gone I think didn't line at me today oh boy after 90 seconds it's all over and rapper can get out of the coffin again he has died and been reborn [Music] you know keep it overlapping what about a community cloud for him a new life is just beginning and now we know the story behind this mysterious place our next destination is Manila capital of the Philippines a gigantic Cemetery in the middle of Manila and one of the most mysterious living spaces in the world here 2,000 families cook sleep and live alongside on top of and even right inside the burial plots nowhere else to life and death coexist as dramatically as in this cemetery but how can you live surrounded by the dead the Philippines is a country of contrasts paradise on one hand but also a place of poverty and extreme overpopulation especially in the capital Manila too many people too little room the last resort when you need a place to live the cemetery and that's exactly where we are heading the notorious North cemetery is in the center of Manila it's dimensions are huge an area the size of 7 football pitches and 2,000 families live here surrounded by thousands of graves here death is hardly a taboo subject [Music] our reporter class is visiting the Feliciano family they are willing to show us their home as with most cemetery dwellers their living space under cemetery itself merged seamlessly the lady of the house Milagros is in her kitchen that was the residents of the cemetery don't have to pay any rent but they work and sleep among the dead [Music] many developer depot at Minnesota Lupo detour in the hallway we spot three other tunes and two people are also buried in the living room the woman in this grave only died two years ago do you like it I don't tell me such a great thing happier than my own daddy get along into skin one and I'm very happy the Feliciano's have four children and eight grandchildren there is life aplenty here right next to the dead [Music] there is no running water in the cemetery so twice a day Milagros has to make a pilgrimage to fetch some the own helium and 80 liters of water costs the equivalent of four cents life in the cemetery is hard however Milagros is everyday existence is basically similar to that of many Filipino women things are different for her husband Manuel the gravedigger is hard at work in his workshop because tomorrow there will be an important burial here than in Milan so today Manuel will be performing an excuse the rental agreement for this burial plot has expired and the relatives can't afford to extend it the body has to be moved an everyday task for the gravedigger for most people it would be very much to build option [Music] it's an elegant about Naaman didn't prepare the Indigo Malo well I mean come all the mortal remains end up in a mass grave the grave digger cements the sack in place here for the coming decades what continues in a more harmless fashion while Manuel's sons prepare the grave our reporter is even allowed to paint the gravestone for tomorrow's burial very familiar for become of deer engrave on your vote so carefully my boy I need to model a pair of panco like a soul you say something or someone workman basis man although the rent for a grave is only six dollars a year many of the relatives just can't afford it so the inhabitants of the cemetery have come up with an unusual idea to help poor families the daughter Minh Ellen is going to show class what's going on we have to get to the other side of the cemetery wall this route is only open during the day what looks like a dull is in fact a genuine dead body and right next to it people are gambling what on earth is going on the boy died of pneumonia five days ago since then his body has been lying here with the temperature 30 degrees in the shade tomorrow they should finally have enough money for him to be buried as we return to the cemetery settlement we happened to witness a catastrophe being averted while we've been filming a hut on the cemetery wall has caught fire the flames are in danger of spreading it was caused by a short circuit from a cable since electricity prices are high many Filipinos tapped the mains supply illegally and these improvised cables frequently caused terrible fires this time the situation is rescued just in time because all the residents have lent a hand in the Feliciano household however there is no sign of alarm wasn't this mother of four at all worried [Music] I'm the una parte de la una buena Casa Luker Johanna young Sonia perhaps Milagros is humble approach to life also comes from her faith she's content with what she has though it's not much with the equivalent of $10 Milagros looks after herself her husband and the eight grandchildren [Music] meanwhile it is night outside but Manuel still hasn't finished work the grave simply must be made ready around 10 o'clock it's bedtime tonight class is allowed to sleep on a grave [Music] Manuel knows what he's talking about he and his family sleep on or beside graves - a new day dawns and our reporter has also survived the night work continues 70 burials in one day that can happen here and nobody would panic around noon the funeral procession arrives we keep our distance the relatives of the deceased don't want us to film them and we respect that not until the mourners have left this class have a chance to admire the gravestone he painted and now it's time for us to say farewell to life in the cemetery
