[Music] voila oh look at how fancy hey welcome back to from scratch ranch and this video series on our wood burning stove here in the barn dominion if you haven't seen the previous two episodes of us installing the stone for the hearth and the back wall and harvesting all that stone out of our own woods and also harvesting the log for the mantle up there and chainsaw milling that make sure you check those videos out there's links down below in the description in this video it's going to be all about the wood burning stove itself the yodel oslo f500 so stay tuned [Music] these uh titan pallet forks that i got off amazon or a lifesaver that's clamped right on in the bucket and uh i can use it as a forklift pick up pallets this is the wood burning stove i just picked up and uh it's a 450 pounds of stove itself so yeah there's no way to be able to lift this out of here without a forklift or pallet forks on the tractor i just need you to help me guide this in so i'm gonna get closer first and then i'll drop it i guess it's so heavy it was like compressing the shocks on the truck okay there it goes you roll back a little bit that's okay i think it's it's on there solid right i mean it's it's in the air yep it is so i just need to back up and slowly lower it just wondering if i should throw a strap around it though okay that feels way safer now everything look okay if i drop this it's bad bad news i'm going it's going slow am i clear [Music] [Applause] [Music] voila oh look at how fancy it's a clean out pan parts all the parts the instructions it's got that side door that side door is gonna be nice because that's gonna be the side that's facing our family room area yodel is a company out of norway and they've been making wood stoves since 1853 so they have a long history of making quality wood stoves the yodel f500 oslo is 100 cast iron and it has won many awards for its design and performance so the total investment in this wood stove was around five thousand dollars including the install the stove itself was three thousand dollars all of the stove pipe and chimney was expensive a lot more expensive than i expected partly because i used double wall insulated pipe the entire distance even on the inside and that's because i wanted to get as close to the wall as possible with the the stove pipe and there's limitations to uh the single wall pipe and the distance it needs to be away from the drywall all the stovepipe and collars and chimney and all of the parts needed was around fifteen to eighteen hundred dollars so about twelve feet on the inside another ten feet in the attic space and another four to six feet i think on the roof and i needed to get the chimney above a certain point for draw i hired licensed professional wood stove installers for a couple reasons first and foremost they are license installers in most states in counties you must have it installed by a licensed installer as mandated not only by the code but by your insurance provider everything we own is stored in this barn and barnum and there is no way i'm risking it all the fire because i made a stupid mistake trying to install it by myself not worth saving the 600 as it costs to have it professionally installed second that thing is heavy i did not want to even risk trying to do it by myself finally i am not a fan of heights and there was no way i was getting up on that roof to install that chimney [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] so [Music] this firewood carrier made by amigably has been super super helpful for carrying all this firewood in it's made out of a waxed canvas super durable and i picked this up on amazon for about 25 bucks there's a link below if you're interested but again super super helpful especially if you're bringing in firewood daily or multiple times a day all right to get my fire started first i've got my fat wood here i love that fat wood i just picked that up at lowe's but that starts up a fire really really fast and then i got my kindling split that and then my firewood so this is the yodel f500 v3 oslo it does meet the 2020 epa guidelines so it is super clean and efficient it's got a really large firebox so it'll handle 24 inch logs and it will heat 2400 square feet up to 2 400 square feet so it's plenty big for our barnum and it has really really kept us warm we've been burning a fire in this stove for months now and it has really really kept us warm we haven't had to run our mini split heat at all so it has done its job now one of the things i learned though is how to build a fire in the stove and get it going right away when i first did this i started you know the old fashioned way of starting your kindling at the bottom and building it up you know i've tried the tp style i've tried um you know stacking it and starting with small kindling and adding more on top and everything i did didn't seem to really work and i kind of got a lot of smoke a lot of times and i couldn't understand it um and then i saw a couple videos wrangled star was one of them uh who showed this way of starting the kindling on top so you put all your logs on the bottom and then you do your kindling and small pieces on the top let it burn and let it drop down in in between all the logs below and it will get that going and man what a difference it works every time so i'm going to show you how to do that here because it is a super neat trick all right so as you can see this is a cold start here i got this is hasn't been lit in a day so it's not hot at all so i'm starting with a cold start so i'm taking some of the shorter logs and laying them in there like so and that's gonna capture some of the coals that drop down as that burns all right then i'm gonna take two more pieces and [Music] lay these in the opposite way and then another two pieces and go that way with it i'm going to take a couple pieces of fat wood here and lay them in the center and then my kindling goes across the top here smaller pieces you know just kind of alternate them and lots of airflow that's the key lots and lots of airflow and what's going to happen is this will burn all of this killing up here and as it starts to drop down it'll catch all this underneath on fire so i actually like to throw a small little piece of kindling down underneath here too so that it falls onto the to the kindling below and gets that going just some extra measure there now you can wad up some paper and stick it under there and light down on fire or you can even just light that fatwood just straight up without the paper it lights very easily yeah look at that go so then that will start burning that way and we'll see what happens [Music] see that's progressing nicely and quickly [Music] and it's still great the doors open and all that smoke is going right up we've got good draw up the chimney you can see how that's starting to really burn that kindling up there and it's going to eventually start dropping down those embers will start dropping down and catching down below on fire oh there goes some see how it lit up so i guess what's happening is we have the kindling suspended high and it's getting plenty of airflow you just saw that start to drop so as soon as this like kindling bridge you know burns up enough to where it'll collapse then all of those coals will drop down below and get that fire really going but it's all about that airflow with that kindling suspended up in the air like that there we got some embers dropping [Music] so now it's starting to take off so i'm going to shut the door and i'm just going to lightly close it all right now i can start adding some more wood to it now i got a good coal base pieces on the sides lots of ash and then now we can start loading it up [Music] got these uh welding gloves they work great to have on the fire to grab pieces of wood yeah these work really really well there's a link down below for amazon [Music] now that piece on the right side has caught pretty quickly so you got a really hot fire going there some hot coals it's still the structure is still holding up as soon as this piece right there collapses and i can probably start piling the wood on top and then get this thing roaring [Music] with that piece on the left side that just caught big time same with the right side [Music] oh that's hot [Music] all right got a good coal base in the middle here so now i'm just going to stack all my logs in there [Music] look at how fast that caught you know you got a hot fire wind and it's not cold you just throw a log on there and it just immediately catches like that so now this thing will really get roaring one thing here is the air control so i can allow you know maximum air in or snuff it out a little bit um using this lever here so now it is up to 300. yeah that's going really good now [Music] oh yeah lots of heat well this was a really big job it was a big undertaking but you know what it was really really worth it looking back on it yeah it it hurt it was a lot of work but i love it i mean it turned out really really well and i just love how this looks and it's super functional keeps our entire place super warm and cozy so i am thrilled hopefully you enjoyed the video series if you did make sure you hit that like button and if you're not subscribed make sure you subscribe so you can stay up to date on everything we're doing out here at the barn dominium and on the ranch we've got a lot of projects coming up so until next time keep living the dream [Music] you
