[Music] hi i'm michelle mj boyle welcome to my tiny house village [Music] my tiny house village is a very small cluster of tiny homes that are used as vacation rentals or short-term accommodations we're in the middle of oregon wine country and there are four tiny homes here and i also live here too so the concept of my tiny house village originally came after i had attended almost every single tiny house event in the entire country and 2017. so i knew that instead of just living and participating in the tiny house industry i really wanted to be an active part of it so i started looking at all the different ways that one can earn money in the tiny house industry right so i looked at websites i looked at consulting i looked at classes i looked at building designing all of those things but when it came right down to it the numbers were indisputable i landed in the building and hosting business model to make a long story short i can build a tiny house and i can sell it and i can make a few thousand bucks or i can build a tiny house i can rent it i can make a few thousand bucks per house every couple of months so to me the math just made a lot of sense my tiny hideout is a quintessential tiny house it's 114 square feet it is eight and a half by 14 feet long and sleeps three people and it's by far the most popular tiny house in the entire village you want to take a look inside come on in [Music] it's tough to fit a lot of functionality into 114 square feet i'll just tell you that right now as a matter of fact you even have to be so specific as to figure out where to put the electrical boxes mine is right behind here this is actually a removable panel one of the other challenges of a super tiny house is figuring out how to get up and down the ladder so this was a huge investment but by far one of the best attributes because it means we can sleep not one not two but three people that's the queen loft up there once you climb up the ladder into the queen loft you probably won't want to leave and probably part of the reason is because of this part table part railing part desk but all comfortable and super convenient when i design tiny houses i try to pay it forward as much as possible to artists that i know in this particular case i really wanted a headboard but in tiny houses you don't necessarily have room for headboard so i bought a piece of stainless steel and i hired a local guy and he did some really cool stuff kind of like artwork meets headboard and then many of you might even know derek d diedrichson i actually ordered three pieces from him also specifically for the hideout the design here is part fort part treehouse part hideout part cabin but all man cave and so i wanted to make sure that i infused as much masculine fun funky different cool stuff as i possibly could the ceiling design itself i got cabinet grade plywood and i painted it but it took a lot of paint because it color that dark to get that kind of saturation it was a huge project but i pre-painted the panels before i installed them i trimmed it out with clear rough cut cedar and i love the results when you sit up here and you see how the light actually bounces across the ceiling it's amazing it just really really adds a lot of architectural feature i am a ceiling fan addict i believe that every single tiny house should have at least one if not two or maybe three if you can fit them but at the same time because the house is so small and because the ladder i couldn't have open blades so i wanted to find a ceiling fan that provided a ton of airflow that was caged that was affordable and oh by the way it also has to be remote controlled that is truly one of a kind but also a really popular feature here's the bathroom so i made the same mistake with my tiny house shower as i've seen made time and time and time again i can't believe if you place your shower pan over one of the metal cross braces under the trailer the drain doesn't work that's what happened so instead of using the fiberglass shower that i was going to use i actually had to make my own shower stall one of the guys i hired is actually called the shower pan guy he came and did the shower pan itself i pieced together the tile definitely beginner's job you can tell but the surround is actually the same stainless steel that we bought for the headboards the shower is a really popular feature our hot water heater is amazing also in the bathroom is a nature's head toilet i really do like them they're really odor free and fairly easy to use and they give our guests a different experience than they have at home but my favorite part about the bathroom is definitely the cedar when you're taking a shower it smells like you're in the woods and then the backpack a cool feature i love it for storage originally when i designed my tiny hideout i thought it was actually going to sleep five people i had originally envisioned actually having a couch here that would fold out and sleep two more people but five people and 114 square feet kind of seemed kind of nuts and a little over the top so i pivoted my design and i decided actually this countertop would provide way more functionality and way more comfort and so it really worked out well that is actually an authentic 1901 model t ford trunk in the old days model t fords literally had trunks that were strapped to the back of them so i put some casters on it and now that's my storage for things like an ironing board and board games and other fun stuff i also have some stools underneath there so this becomes great for either dining or working from home if you've seen my other tour videos you already know that i'm completely obsessed with ikea kitchen carts and this house is no no exception my toaster measuring cups all kinds of extra stuff that i don't want to actually actively display on the beautiful part of the kitchen that is the open shelving we just have a small refrigerator plenty big for the people that are coming to stay for a couple of days in this particular case most of the two burner propane stoves are side to side so i had to look far and wide to find a two burner stove that was actually front to back but it provides you with a little bit of counter space right here not that we're short on counter space but you can always use more i love open shelves i love open shelves because they're easy to clean they actually make the space look a lot bigger and it gives you the opportunity to actually display some really cool stuff probably one of the reasons why my tiny hideout is so popular is because i have two beds oftentimes i'll have girlfriends traveling together or anybody traveling together that just doesn't feel like sleeping together and so the twin loft provides that much more functionality some of my guests actually refer to it as the sunset loft because that side is the sunrise loft and this is the sunset loft it's got a really great view and people absolutely love it and the ladder is not too tough to climb so that's a popular feature too the process of laying out my tiny house village was never really intentional it was very organic there was never a grand plan we didn't have a big drawing we just kind of went with the flow my tiny hideout actually belongs right here it feels comfortable here and it was kind of the only spot on the back road where it would actually fit we had to take things into consideration like access water and access electricity and how close we are to the property line in the back we also had to figure out where was everybody gonna park so for this particular one you can't see it now but the parking is actually the other direction so we just kind of went with it and it works really well i was talking about that electrical and wiring stuff in this particular case my tiny wine wagon and my tiny hideout actually share the same power pole power pole wise it looks very complicated but it was relatively simple the ditches however that was a ton of work we rented a ditch digger and it's a huge machine and it took us like three days and it was so much work but everything works really well and that's always the upside of a lot of hard work as you get great results my tiny wine wagon you can see the location for this one was kind of organic i would have much preferred that it was a little bit further away from the hideout but lots of times we'll have families or couples that want to rent two houses and they say which one are close together so these two are a perfect pair as far as building out the deck and setting the house you can see how close it is to one of my favorite trees on the property that's actually a grand and as it grows we're probably going to have to like carve out the deck but when we place it there having it that close to the tree and under the tree it provides shade it provides a beautiful nesting space for our birds it's just looks cozy it looks like it really belongs there and again it's kind of a nice neighbor to the hideout slowly but surely all of the paths in the village actually kind of made themselves so when the cleaning crew comes when guests actually travel between houses originally it was just all grass now however we have a little bit more flow a little bit more definition shall we say about how to get from one place to the other and speaking of getting from one place to another this is also quite a popular feature in the tiny house village when it's full there's like 13 people that stay here and each house only has one bathroom so oftentimes we'll find our additional guests or sometimes visitors or sometimes film crews that actually want to use the outhouse this is a cedarloo outhouse it's made of cedar it has cedar chips on the floor and there's cedar chips in the toilet and most of our people that come here and use this outhouse say that it's the best smelling one that they have ever been in by far we have a few fun features and this is my newest and most popular the leave a beer take a beer box this was actually to solve a problem well kind of a problem i don't drink beer and a lot of times our guests will buy two or three cases and not drink it all while they're here so they'll leave behind two or three or six and i have been collecting them and i didn't want to put them throw them away and i couldn't figure out what to do with them so finally i came up with this concept so people that leave beer behind we put it in the box and also sometimes people will check in late in the afternoon they don't want to stop what they're doing and go back to the store to get beer so at least this kind of gets their weekend off to the right foot my tiny bird house is the only tiny house in the village that kind of has its own little yard partially because of the fact that the house itself and the deck are so small i used to have the chairs actually up here but i didn't want people to fall off accidentally as you can well imagine and of course i wanted to make sure that the people staying in this house have as much outdoor space as possible so now they have an outdoor dining option and an outdoor lounging option and i've actually had a couple people that stayed here and it was pouring down rain and they brought a big huge shade tent and this was perfect so for our budget travelers this is a really great idea really comfortable indoors and out as you can well imagine being in the middle of a forest fires are a big deal and when people come to the village most of them expect to be able to have a campfire burn ban or no burn ban we don't allow open fires we do however provide a fire table so this is where people often gather propane flames are still warm they're still fun in my tiny house village we don't discriminate as long as you're on wheels we're good in this particular case that means we're hosting eris the hippie teardrop what used to be my preferred form of transport when i was going camping is now actually an upgrade in the village inside you'll find a really comfortable mattress during the summer season and it actually provides a lot of flexibility think of it as an extra bedroom for a tiny house for instance and interestingly enough eris the hippie teardrop also spawned an entirely new business not far down the road is my other side hustle oregon teardrop rentals they're still tiny they're still designed by me they're still funky and unique and fun and rentable and simple the only difference is when you rent a teardrop you take it with you this one however is staying right here one of the things i love about the tiny house industry is the fact that it's cutting edge it's disruptive technology it's helping the masses to question not only their existence but how they go into the world how they live their lives this whole consumer mentality it questions even the american dream so being a part of the tiny house industry is really exciting to me because in many many ways it's not normal and believe me there's a lot of uncomfortable things about being not normal or outside of that box but at the same time even as a host i have the opportunity to introduce this style of living to everybody that comes to stay in the village and really that's my favorite part this is my tiny perch it was the first tiny house in what would be become my tiny village location wise it was perfect this was actually supposed to be the spot where the land hosts were going to put a cabin for santa for the christmas tree farm but that never ended up happening but what it means is we already had electrical and water so from a land host perspective there was really no decision making this is where it was going to go so it made a lot of sense my tiny house that i live in was actually set forth to reduce my overall living expenses the concept of the village now is the concept that says okay now we're going to increase my income so at the same time that i've cut my expenses i'm now increasing my income so i won't lie one of the best things about the concept in general is i now have a comfort about my financial future that i've literally never had before when i started in the tiny house industry in 2014 i had no money none and so i have built and i have bootstrapped and i've paid cash and i've got sponsorships i've done everything i can do to keep my expenses low and now i have this great attitude this great thing about looking forward to the future actually having an opportunity to maybe someday i get to retire welcome to my tiny perch it's the first house that i added to the village although at the time i really wasn't thinking about the village it's eight by eighteen and a half feet long slightly under seven thousand pounds and people tell me that every single one of my tiny houses has like a bit of my personality in it so the perch is definitely reflective of my smile it's bright and it's cheerful and i really really love that i was able to really push the envelope when it comes to design and color so this is the inside design of the perch was all about light and bright i love the full glass door and it's windows everywhere design wise i always start with a piece of inspirational fabric this fabric the curtains actually came from ikea so every single paint color was actually color matched for that and also when the curtains are closed they kind of look like framed artwork i really love them when designing a space for for hospitality you want to include just enough but not too much so you'll notice that the kitchen has a stove but not an oven because most people don't actually bake when they're on vacation i have a refrigerator but it's not too big most people never take more than a bag or two of groceries and that's more than big enough however always always always have to have coffee so that's a major priority originally i thought i was actually going to make this more into a lounge area and i thought maybe i could fit like a little corner love seat but as the design came together it made way more sense to actually provide dining and workspace in every single one of my houses without exception i have a kitchen cart and the reason is because they're so efficient and they're so easy to use and easy to pack and they carry everything this one of course has all the coffee and the sugar and cooking and lids and uh i could go on and on but i just love the coffee carts i have one in every tiny house and this spot underneath the stove was actually created to fit the coffee cart every square inch in a tiny house really needs to be really intentional and that's how you get an efficient layout every nook and cranny take advantage of every nook and cranny that's what i keep telling myself and this bookcase is actually no exception however what you don't know by actually looking at it is if you remove the trim the whole bookcase actually pulls out in one piece and behind there is all the mechanicals for the plumbing and the electrical so oftentimes you'll get a mysterious leak behind the shower you don't have to tear the whole wall down you can just take the bookcase out also the electrical panel is hid behind this wonderful blackboard and same thing if we need to do any major repairs or any major wiring then we can do so from behind there the tiny perch is all about color it's all about privacy and it's all about unique utilization of space this again is a really really small bathroom but it's really efficient get ready for more nooks and crannies our guests love how the bathroom smells this is a hundred percent lined in cedar but at the same time i didn't want it to actually feel like a coffin so i added relights so when you're in here and you close the door you don't feel like you're in a wood box you still have light and access kind of to the outside this is a nature's head toilet i love them they control odor they're pretty easy to use and our guests actually consider it part of the experience the tiniest tub you've probably ever seen but really efficient also in all of my rentals i include 100 biodegradable plant-based shampoo and conditioner in my tiny perch like most tiny houses you don't have to go very far to actually find the bedroom in my tiny perch however i have thought really long and really hard about making sure that the guests have place to put their stuff so you'll see lots of hooks and lots of places to store including under the bed most of our guests put their luggage under here after they have unpacked sometimes i use recycled or reused stuff in an unexpected way here in the tiny perch bedroom is actually i use an old kitchen cabinet as a dresser the cabinet originally came from my boyfriend's parents 1945 bungalow but i saved the cabinet i brought it here i refinished it i painted it and actually the cabinet is what dictates the size of the entire bedroom [Music] sometimes i have time to do something besides just think about the tiny houses i get to think about how to add more fun features and the recent acquisition and addition of the cornhole was one of those examples it was really simple you just go on craigslist i found a cornhole set and then added a couple of chairs and now we can often find our guests down here laughing and having a really good time and relaxing and that's really what the village is all about coming here and spending time with people and getting off screen and having fun in the great outdoors if you've ever thought about setting up your own tiny house village i can tell you it's awesome and it's really rewarding although it's called my tiny house village the truth is it actually takes a village to manage my tiny house village i just want to do a quick shout out to everybody that helps i have marketing people i have staff i have cleaning staff people that help me mow our land hosts my builders my contractors i have people that manage press so i keep on saying
