look now i get at wingspan is a game with adorable birds and it's so fun collecting all the birds collecting the eggs gathering the food placing all your birds in a cute little row but let's face it this game is cutthroat so today i am going to give you five tips and strategies on how to improve your game play in [Music] wingspan [Music] welcome to lord of the board my name is sam smith and today we are going to be looking at five beginner tips and strategies on how to play wingspan better and i may even include a sixth tip in there but you'll have to stay to the end to see now if you don't know what wingspan is it's pretty much an engine builder where you're able to have a certain amount of actions that are going to slowly decrease over the game's flow and throughout the game you're going to be gaining food collecting eggs drawing cards repeating that process and trying to have the best engine by the end of the game and collect the most victory points so how do we do that best that is where we are right here but keep in mind this is not a rules video so if you don't know how to play just yet definitely go learn how to play and then come back here that way i can teach you how to win so with that let's go right into my first tip so my first step in strategy is regarding bonus cards now at the beginning of the game each player is going to have two of these bonus cards to choose from and they pretty much provide a maximum of about seven points some of them provide eight points but for the most part they can only provide you with a maximum of about seven points sometimes even less so my first tip is to not focus so hard on those bonus cards you can get birds that give you seven points just by existing on your player board and so when you're looking at those bonus cards think about what cards do you have in your hand if you already have cards that are going towards that goal maybe choose that bonus card and if you happen to get it by the end of the game that's great but your focus should definitely be more on what cards you're playing into your habitats and also how can i score best on the end of round goals now pretty much in wingspan you're going to have two types of bird cards you're going to have bird cards that are a little bit less expensive to feed meaning play into your habitat and then you're going to have ones that are a little bit more hard to feed meaning that they're going to be more expensive to play into your habitat those ones that cost more usually give you a higher victory point count at the end of the game but don't necessarily have great abilities throughout the game and so one thing that i would say is to play those lower cost cards first in your habitats and use those abilities that those cards have to gain more resources in order to be able to afford those more expensive birds later in the game this creates a ramping effect and the way that you want your ramp is you want it to be the lower cost birds first ramping up to those higher cost birds now a good example is this american woodcock he gives 9 victory points but costs 3 total resources but he does not have any ability but we've got this black crowned knight heron this also gives you 9 victory points but it has an ability that lets you discard one egg from any of your other birds to gain one resource from the supply way way better if you're able to balance those lower cost higher ability birds earlier in the game and then start going for the big point holders you're gonna definitely do well in wingspan [Music] and for my third tip and strategy it's kind of more of a thought process now i've heard some of the criticisms of this game to be that it feels very solitary and that it's mostly just players working on their own boards and not really interacting with the other players to that i say it is not true um the sooner that you realize that wingspan is not a solitaire game the better off you really are at winning at it because there is so many opportunities to deny other players of things that they may want for example a player may draw a bird card that they don't have any intent on playing just to deny other players from grabbing that specific bird card so looking at other players boards throughout the game is actually super important and trying to guestimate what resources they need what cards they need and being able to deny them of that will really help you shoot up in the score above them now for my fourth tip and strategy i've got two types of cards that you're going to want to look out for the first is the pink ability cards these cards have abilities that happen once between turns and they don't always happen these types of cards usually say something to the effect of when another player plays a card in their wetland gain one fish from the supply now the reason why you want to stay away from these pink ability cards or at least be weary of playing them is that you're not going to be able to guarantee that you are going to gain that benefit and so oftentimes these can just take up space and not actually gain you any resources or any cards and so it's something to definitely look out for there's other ways to optimize your engine and playstyle as opposed to letting other players determine when you're getting those resources and the second type of card to look out for is the cards that actually give all players a certain type of resource now these exist all throughout the deck and the reason to be careful about playing them is that if another player is benefiting more from that resource than you are then you're just helping them beat you and this is something that's a little bit hard to tell if they're benefiting more from so usually especially for your first games your first couple games definitely stay away from those cards that are giving resources to all of the other players [Music] and my last tip and strategy is probably the most important one and it's something that you really have to look out for and start optimizing in your gameplay in order to be successful at this game and that is choosing cards that do one of the basic three actions and putting them in an opposite action spot now what i mean by that is that there's basically three things that you can do in this game you can gain food lay eggs and draw cards what you're trying to do is draw cards when you're gaining food that is what you're trying to do or maybe lay eggs when you're gaining food maybe you can gain food when you're drawing cards now why is this important it helps you save action points a really good example of this would be to let's say place this wood duck inside the forest and not the wetland because this wood deck has the ability where you win activated you can draw two cards and if you do discard one from your hand at the end of your turn so this adds card draw to a spot that you're usually just gaining food at and this is exactly how you optimize your play because now you don't have to go to the wetland to gain cards as much you can go to the forest gain food and draw cards bonus tip yes of course i'm gonna give you guys a bonus tip come on who do you think i am i love you guys oh but first definitely make sure that you comment down below because if i don't get enough comments i don't know this might be the last lord of the board video you ever see no that would never happen but definitely comment like subscribe it really helps the channel that's what we do here i mean you guys help me i help you it's a good relationship right okay so i'm just gonna straight up flat out say and i'm sure you can find sources everywhere saying this but it is the truth the best cards in this game are the crows and the ravens there's two crows and two ravens um i'm going to show you know a couple pictures of them but they're just so darn powerful if you ever see these draw them or pick them up as soon as possible because if your opponent gets a hold of them they're very good if you get a hold of them it's a big benefit i mean let's just look at this american crow for example this costs one of any resource can be placed in any of the three habitats and when activated discard one egg from any of your other birds to gain one of any type of resource from the supply the value is incredible and all of the crows and ravens have abilities very similar and just like that and they have pretty good victory point values as well so be looking for those throughout the game they are very great cards and with that that is it for my five tips and
