[Music] it's a thing of beauty isn't it the capstan winch there's a certain amount of romance I guess associated with it at least it is to me this is a video that I've wanted to do quite some time and finally the series 3 is all back together and is ready to go out and conquer the great beyond today what I'm going to be showing you there's a bit of a demonstration on video I guess an update on how to use an aero parts capstan wings it should be an interesting video anyway station [Music] [Applause] so I just wanted to take the time to talk a little bit about the winch itself now two businesses have really helped me out in regards to sourcing parts Mick at I think it's Landy bits or L oh no it's LR bits bits with a Z in the UK very nice gentleman he actually gets this hemp rope from the Philippines and fits a rated recovery hook on it now this rope here is actually rated for five tonne I'm pulling an 88 inch Land Rover even with it fully laden I can be pretty sure even if it's bogged upto its axles five tonne it's I think it's going to be sufficient and I think the actual shear pin in the capstan winch will probably break before the rope does so I feel relatively safe now the reason why I'm using hemp rope is another question that I think needs to be answered a lot of people out there today obviously have heard about plasma rope there's plasma rope I think there's another one might be dynamic rope I could be wrong I dunno about plasma rope though and a lot of people think it's a relatively new concept when it comes to using it for winches rigging and all the rest well you guys and girls out there watching who riggers by trade will know that it isn't the concept of using natural fibers as a rope has been around for millennia I think the Britons used to get particular bark that soak it in a creek and then they would simply rip the strands off it and then slowly weave it together to form a rope there's a tree up in the Kimberley which you can use I forget the name it evades me at the moment but a similar thing the Aborigines in that part of the world used to use it for rope and twine and pretty much just about anything so using natural fiber rope isn't anything new the reason why people have sort of gone away from it is you have to take care of it such a pain but you do you got to make sure you keep it clean like I'll brush this off after this video because it's been laying in the dirt I keep it in a Hessian or Hessian sack depending on what school you went to and I just actually picked this up at a pet store I was meant to be for a dog matter of some kind but it's actually really really good for keeping the rope in because the great thing about using a hessian sack is it allows the rope to breathe and it there's no buildup of condensation so there's no chance of mold or rot and that's why it's really good using one of these to store your veggies in and that's what I do at home and that's what I do on big trips and also if you keep it a little bit down for your veggies it'll actually help to keep them nice and cool there you go I bet you didn't think you'd learn that in a winching video but you just have so the other reason why detrol fiber rope is much better than synthetic and the laser capstan winch is particularly the fairies in the manuals they recommend going for a rope called Viking which i think is three large strands woven together is because sometimes this can actually slip and all you have to do is rub your hands together and you can feel how hot that gets well imagine plastic rubbing on metal that's going to get pretty hot and I've heard from people and I've read accounts of people having a lot of grief trying to get synthetic rope off the turret of this and I really don't want to go down that road you can use steel cable too but I think that actually ends up damaging the turret a little bit not too sure on that one but I can tell you something now you'd want a decent pair of gloves because your hands that come out looking like mincemeat by the end of it so that's why we're going for natural fiber rode the winch itself I believe was manufactured in 1971 or would have been round about that era it was used on a FJ Cruiser I think I think it was FJ it might have been FJ it was used on an early model Land Cruiser either way I think Land Cruiser or Land Rover with the Tasmanian hydroelectric scheme and it was actually used to pull wire copper wire through conduit so it's had a relatively easy life however from the other videos on our channel you'll know that this is I think part three on the capstan winch as I've had to pretty much overhaul the winch from top to bottom I've had to put a new pin through the turret through here I've put new seals in new boots all of which apart from the pin that went through the top here I got from LR winches thin there knows his stuff very very well in regards to the capstan winch and any other PTO sort of derived or Land Rover Pacific sort of winch here's the one to have a talk to very knowledgeable bloke but anyway that's enough of mace that are prattling on let's get into winching now with this demo I haven't bogged the Land Rover up to the windshield and over because it is just that it's a demonstrational video will I get the Land Rover bogged in the future yes I will will I have a go at using the capstan winch yes I will will i film it I will aim to film it in the future and you can hold me to that but today I just wanted to show how to use a narrow parts capstan winch because I couldn't find any half-decent videos out there on YouTube and it is a really cool piece of kit and that's why I thought I'd do this video so anyway I'm going to fire up the Landy we'll get the Birmingham special going nicely and we're going to get this Landy moving forward okay so I've taken up the slack right just ease it off it's just preparing around doing its own thing now people are going to comment on this so I'm just going to make it very very clear now there's no one sitting in the car so I'm on flat level ground so I haven't got anything to worry about if you're winching you should have someone in the car so they can put their foot on the brake they can cut the motor where need be okay but I couldn't have anyone come out with me today so I'm doing it like this so don't do this a time I've said it listen to it I've said make sure that you have someone in the vehicle okay so let's have a bit of fun okay look that out of the way so the fantastic thing about this is it depends on how much I want to pull if I'm only pulling let's say I don't know a little walk towards a campfire which I've done before all I have to do is just poop one ring of road around the turret [Applause] okay now that's not quite enough to move for vehicle I'm just going to check this [Applause] right that's going to make life a little bit easier at the handbrake on so that's another one to check and make sure your car's not in here so there we are so this is just one and as you can see it's moving the car forwards now I'm happy to pull on that a little bit I might not want to work that hard so let's put a few other little hooks around it [Applause] take this off get myself already inside it so let's be adventurous hey let's put three on three so I'm just going to give this a gun in oh yeah I could do it one-handed how easy side one-handed doing this by actually pulling up on the roller works really well now pulling directly it's somewhat harder so there you go [Applause] now a lot of winters nowadays you had fancy Bluetooth promotes and all the rest and that allows you to obviously switch to the winch on/off slow it down speed it up but it's nothing new it really isn't anything new now I can pull this and if I release it and we'll just sit there quite happily I want to winch it a little bit further forward and just put a little bit of pull on that right moves forward how easy is that it doesn't get any easier it's fantastic so it's so so simple anyway I think you get the picture very very simple to use very effective now I know a lot of people are going to say oh my gosh it's so slow well there's a very simple answer to that that's all capstan which itself is a direct drive so it actually drives directly off the crank shaft of the motor so however fast the motor spins or if I increase it by pressing the accelerator pedal this will also cause rpm or the rate of rotation of the capstan which to increase so if I had someone inside the vehicle I could ask them very kindly to just put the accelerator on a little bit or if I was very very fortunate and I came across a very very rare series 3 and clubbing it I could simply set the hand throttle and off I go alternatively if I get really really stuck I can just simply adjust the idle by turning in the idling screw on the carburetor so that's why it's a little bit slow in this video now many people also say why on earth would you use hemp rope go to all this trouble well I think it's very important to preserve these methods of recovery because if people don't do this it's all going to be forgotten and it is actually a really really interesting way of getting yourself out of trouble anyway look I hope you've enjoyed this demonstration on the video on the aero parts capstan winch if you want to see more videos like
