there's a real danger that the evolutions in AI could cause some humans their jobs in the near future with all the talk right now about artificial intelligence and chat GPT is it time to start looking at its potential impact on Aviation [Music] I have myself predicted in several videos that the role of the pilot is not threatened by automation at least until we have real working General Ai and I also predicted that it would take at least another generation before that would happen but is that still true well I am a lot of things but I'm not an expert on artificial intelligence so I went out and found one who just also happened to be a follower of both my channels [Music] it's so great to have you here it's an honor to be here we had the most incredible conversation about what AI can and cannot do why that is and what we can expect from the future especially in aviation oh by the way me and Marcus company CVT have been working on a crazy cool surprise for you and I'll tell you all about that a little bit later on now stay tuned for this guys because I promise it will be truly fascinating so we just jump straight into it what is what we call artificial intelligence I'm going to make an oversimplified answer and that is AI as we see it today and specifically narrow AI is basically fake it till you make it on steroids this is the sensationalist way of saying it it's a bit more nuanced than that but that's that's it what do you mean by that it's really a way of approaching technology that is driven primarily by memory and knowledge having seen many things a lot more things than most of us are capable of seeing and remembering them and when being confronted with a solution just simply accessing a gigantic set of memories that we have of oh I've seen this one before so this must be the answer okay so it's it's basically predicting what should be the next step absolutely so it's really predicting the next step so if I were to tell you for example I drink water because I am thirsty there you go so what you did right now is you've heard that sentence before yeah it's a very common sentence you remember hearing somebody saying I'm drinking water because I'm thirsty you didn't necessarily go through the process of the logic of why I drink water correct yes correct the scientific Community would say that today we have narrow AI which is very different from General Ai and even generally I doesn't have a very clear-cut definition but in its most simplest form and to keep this really short that's it it's really trying to guess the next step and specifically large language models which is what child GPT and everybody is using chatgpt is doing nothing more than taking a couple of words and saying okay I've got these four words what should be the next word good now I have five words I have five words what should be the next word and now I have six words and by following this process it's really fascinating to see how accurate you can actually be but so why do people assume that it's sentient or that it's intelligent well that because that's to me is not intelligent that's accessing a database and using probability to to kind of go forward but why do why do we say that it's AI I think we overestimate how many things that we do in life are us living life on other pilot compared to us processing things and understanding and doing things I think AI today and child GPT tells us more about human predictability than it tells us about technological advancements and revolutionizing things because does AI actually understand what it's talking about AI does not understand things or what it is talking about the way humans do absolutely not now it doesn't actually know anything it knows what it's supposed to say child CPT is able to produce an answer to a question by simply following the same mechanism we followed before but it is not actually able to explain and think to itself and have knowledge and awareness of what it is that it is telling you so that's fascinating can we can can you come up with an example that would show that what AI is just incapable of doing so something I played with for example with mid Journey which is one of the most one of the best AI image generation tools you can use right now I gave it a prompt and I said draw an airplane or draw a sketch of an airplane without the front windows and no matter how I would try to twist the sentence in different ways thinking okay maybe it needs to hear it this way it has never been able to to this day until somebody uploads lots of images of an airplane without Windows to produce an image of an airplane that doesn't have front windows and that's and that's because it does not know what a window is it does not know what the front of a window on an airplane is it's not capable like and and this may be misleading because to some people you think well some of the images that my journey can create are amazing I can tell it to draw an airplane painted in the style of Van Gogh yeah and when I see that I think well I'm lots of artists couldn't paint a an airplane in the style of Van Gogh so that means this thing must be incredibly intelligent but in reality what it's doing is it's just taking two things it knows and just throwing them together right so that brings me to my next question then could AI in its current form and in the form that we can foresee in the next you know foreseeable future be suitable to maneuver an aircraft to fly an aircraft entirely by itself yes no not today not the way it is today not what we have today and the reason for this is um it because it doesn't it lacks the understanding right so it lacks the ability to actually understand what is going on what are the components of what is happening around me and to put those pieces of the puzzle to come with a creative new solution it again it can only Access Memory items it can only solve a problem that has exactly the same parameters of a problem that it knows has happened in the past okay and they have to be exactly the same so for example the Miracle of the Hudson this is solely there got into a situation which he had never trained for which he'd never seen there's never been a simulator exercise anything like that and he still managed to solve that situation even though he was above the urban center of New York right what would would shut the DPT or an equivalent being able to solve that uh no and and and the reason for which it chargability wouldn't be able to do that is because it requires the understanding of the various components and the process of taking them into consideration to come up with a new creative solution what solely did in that situation he wasn't accessing his own memory items he wasn't thinking oh this is exactly what has happened before and this is exactly what I'm going to do again he used some components of his memory to training exactly to help him come to some decisions and take some steps that required cognitive capabilities and an understanding of things that the state of AI as it is today simply does not have so a human can then try to extrapolate from previous experiences that they've done and he would come up with the least dangerous thing to do for general population of New York for them in the aircraft which is what solid did but it's a complete something completely novel something that never has done been done before but AI would not be able to do that in its current form no absolutely not and the most dangerous thing is that if it's not instructed for example charge GPT today is is built in a way that it always has to produce an answer another fun exercise you can try is start a chat with chat GPT and tell it not to answer to you yeah and it will be like okay I'm not going to answer to you and then you say hey but you just answered to me it's like oh I'm sorry I'm not going to do that again and then you say but you just answered to me again and you're going to go on an infinite Loop so the risk there is that if we only leverage AI you have a danger in which not only is it not going to be able to process this new information it's going to fake it till you make it and do something that is basically inexplicable and this brings us to potentially the biggest problem and the biggest obstacle for AI or narrow AI as it is today from being able to actually fly a plane is accountability there is a fundamental need for accountability everywhere every single piece of the airplane has a serial number so you can backtrack and go back through all the steps of what led you to go to where you are today and I think the challenge here is that most machine learning models that are out there are either extremely hard to explain why they did something or nearly impossible and now why would um Airlines manufacturers and Pilots want to put themselves in a position where there is an inexplicable outcome that may or may not cause an issue an incident or a problem because you cannot backtrack that yeah right like I have done so many accidents investigation videos by this point and just like you're saying a large part of that is for the investigators to go in and say we found that this was the outcome and then backtrack every single step right to come to it was because of a bias of a pilot it was because of a faulty probe of some sort something was blocked and that caused this and then you could build up so that you can learn from it right so you can make sure that that never ever happens again correct which which also means you can't improve it no so this is the reason we have all these investigations and we spend so much time trying to backtrack all of these steps all of these bad decisions I think you have an analogy you use the layers of the Swiss cheese yes I know I've been watching your videos um so the reason those things are in place it's not because there is somebody an Overlord in the aviation industry who is like I just need to know no no there is a very clear function to you knowing that is because by knowing that you can prevent it yeah exactly so the accountability element isn't just I need to answer I need to have someone to answer to Is I need to be able to lay out the steps that I've been taking in my decision-making process so that I can think about it critically so I can get other people to look at it and to say well then let's maybe do this differently yeah let's change the procedure let's make sure that this doesn't happen let's install the system that stops this exactly so that is actually a very very good point now I have received loads of questions from my patrons I told them that you were going to be on this episode so they sent in some questions and let's see let's see what you have to say about them so for example Brett was asking doesn't AI just turn itself off when it gets confused or doesn't know something today um a lot of the automation on the plane is actually capable of shutting itself off for example the autopilot um has certain criteria by which he's going to be like oh look I have a certain set of rules by which I'm supposed to disengage and do my little sound so that I make the pilots aware yo guys um you're on your own you gotta you know I I can't do it we appreciate that and and the reason it can do that is because it's not AI it's not trying to fake it till you make it it's following a very strict set of guidelines which are code instructions so so the current state of AI doesn't have the level of self-awareness to be able to either know what it means to shut itself off or to know what it means to know something or not know something yeah and this is actually one of the big problems so it does not shut itself off instead it will like you say fake it till America it'll fake it till you make it about 20 of what it will do might be completely what we perceive as they're honest right because it just applies on different set of knowledge behind it and just the bullshits that's right it just does something that does not makes any kind of sense but at least it did something which is absolutely not something that you want an aircraft to do under any circumstances no and I mean a lot of people you've heard those of you who have been reading about um you know you've heard the word hallucinates yeah so you know I've read articles where it says uh child CPT sometimes hallucinates or Bard or whichever other ones right so we're talking child CPT today but I would actually argue to say that charging PT hallucinates 100 of the time but what happens is most of the time it has pretty accurate hallucinations yeah and that actually brings us into something really important to tell from my patrons who's also asking would it be able to play a role during emergencies would we able to implement AI in some usable form during emergencies where it would help the pilots in some way I would say absolutely yes as long as we're thinking about it as assisting the pilot as humans we need to do a lot of memory things we have memory items I think that's literally a word correct in mediation so anything that involves quick access to information that can then go into the human understanding cognition where we spoke about before when we used words and Factory of processing it yeah anything that can help access relevant memory sooner than later is definitely a way that it can help you so for instance um when you have an emergency usually you will have some checklists what to do if you have a single engine failure or if you have a bird strike yes and you're doing some steps that require you accessing memory correct that might be either literally going through checklists that are printed out or going through a checklist that is in a digital format but the process of accessing information which can be time consuming can be accelerated simplified and improved for instance and you could just simply input single engine failure or the AI or the system that would be built would be made aware of the fact that there is a single engine failure and immediately tell you these are all the relevant checklists right so that's the way that AI could help though may not be the necessarily right tool because there might be other simpler non-ai tools that could be used for this yeah and I think Airbus to a certain extent is already doing that it's already kind of prioritizing for the pilots when several failure comes exactly it will tell you what is the most important to do quickest exactly and that could be accelerated or improved right so the process of you accessing information yeah but what happens when you have an emergency is it is really important that that factory or that process or that understanding is as clear-headed as possible because that's what makes a difference that's what made Sully uh become kind of a hero yeah right and save many many lives I can for example see how it would be really helpful in a situation where me as a pilot becomes really confused we've seen a couple of examples where for example visual Illusions or sensatory Illusions create something in the head of a pilot that does not make sense for me it would be really helpful to have something inside of the aircraft that would very clearly notice that I am doing something that does not make sense and tell me tell me what I should be doing so for example pitch up roll right do something very clear that would indicate what I should be doing however on the other side of that is I need to understand all of the systems on board my aircraft right I need to either giving you that input exactly so when I'm using vnab vertical navigation it is very Advanced it will start to decelerate a certain point it will level off but it's all based on very clear rules I understand what I put into my computer v-nav will follow whatever set of rules that I put in so I understand what it's doing if we have ai that starts to work autonomously and does not really explain to me why it is giving me the advice that it's given it will become tricky because either I will just follow blindly what the AI is doing because I know it knows better than me then my own autonomy my own decision making as a pilot gets reduced or I question what it's doing and then it becomes even more complicated and it just increases the workload so AI even even in those situations these systems that includes AI here needs to be really really carefully thought through and as you are saying I think that as long as they just add information helps me with information processing I can definitely see them being useful but in terms of actually inputting on controls or doing something that I'm not directly involved in no right so Jim is asking how could AI improve aircraft maintenance is there a role that you can play in that absolutely like in general like I think I can play a role in many things in aviation and I'm pretty sure it will already today aircraft are subject to very strict inspection some of these inspections may be very time consuming and some of these inspections may not detect problems early on enough so what where AI is definitely going to play a role is being able to make detections of potential problems much earlier on so now we've gotten pretty good at being able to detect uh fatigue you could have systems that are incredibly accurate in predicting uh you know issues way before so basically just feeding in loads and loads and loads of more data about the aircraft and having the AI sift through and see what their passwords aircrafts are scheduled for their maintenance and if you had a system that could tell you well it's probably safer for you to bring it in just a week earlier even if it's three weeks from now yeah first of all that helps you know it's always better to have predicted maintenance than unexpected maintenance right yeah so in many ways I think it can definitely play a role in making the process smoother potentially you know more affordable for Airlines there's just less unnecessary of saving money they love that oh that's that's that's definitely one of them um but again as a tool what about that traffic control could this play a role in a traffic control you think those two questions can I help add automation to a trophy control yes um Can it replace the role of a human having the cognition and understanding of um what is going around and what decisions do they make probably not yet and probably not anytime soon now where it can potentially have a massive breakthrough is the problem of weather so I think this is a big one because the ability for us to accurately predict weather is still quite far off and specifically the ability for us to predict turbulence all right right interesting this is going to be interesting for a lot of people so when it comes to weather prediction and forecasts really struggle with achieving the kind of capacity like the power the energy the computation required to accurately forecast weather patterns and much less so turbulence I mean to some degree turbulence is actually not even that well understood could AI help us find new ways to study turbulence what causes it and what doesn't and what can be done about it I think absolutely yes my Bai might be Quantum Computing but and that could have been used inside of aircraft to predicted so that we would be more exactly so we could you know have better planning when it comes to avoiding turbulence making the flight smoother so so far what I've been hearing from you is basically that AI is going to open up enormous capabilities as a tool but it will not actually do the work for us I like I I actually I was thinking about this the other day and you know that movie what's it called the guy with remote control I think it's was it click I think it's called click where he kind of he clicks forward through boring parts of his life and then the algorithm understands what he thinks is boring and then it just extrapolates that but during the periods that he's on autopilot he doesn't do anything that his wife likes it's just boring he's just doing everything on autopilot that's kind of what AI would do it wouldn't be able to do anything that is out of the ordinary wouldn't be able to to basically come up with any new things to do which makes it very unsuitable for actually flying an aircraft for example yeah absolutely but it also begs the question then what are the low-hanging fruits like if we're looking at from what would you use AI for if we're looking in the in the area of Aviation specifically what will be we talked about predicting turbulence that's something I never thought about which sounds really really cool is there anything else I think like when customer service for example customer service is actually definitely one of them right I mean there is a lot of you know repetitive work so and and I want to start this off by highlighting the fact that there has been a hype around this fear-mongering thought that AI unlike every other technological innovation or breakthrough is just going to replace people's jobs that it's just going to be the end of the world you know a lot of people have been asking me it's like hey is my job going to be replaced by AI should I not pursue this career because of AI and my answer to people is like your job is not going to be replaced by AI itself a person using AI is going to be more skilled and more valuable and more efficient in that job than you would be if you're not using AI so there is the Paradigm of the elevator operator yeah right people like to think about that one because they think well the guy operating the elevator is gone so automation just killed his job no the guy that builds and maintains the elevator is now the elevator operator yeah there is still a human behind it and the evolution is exactly the same you could have argued that airplanes were going to kill cars yeah okay but they didn't no not at all okay but um now that as humans we always want to improve things and make them better and that's the beauty about us right we were tired of driving for 20 hours from A to B so we said you know what I'm gonna fly and then I'm gonna say I'm gonna fly faster okay so and now I'm Gonna Fly cheap and now I'm trying to fight cheaper right so we're always trying to solve problems and I think most people can agree that the general experience that we have when we need to book flights is not necessarily a beautiful pleasant experience we need to deal with the anxiety of did I book the cheapest flight that I booked the best time maybe I booked the cheapest flight because in the moment I needed to make a decision about booking my flight my mind was being like hey are you spending too much money on this so you're like okay I'm gonna take the cheapest one and you're gonna book a flight that leaves at 6 a.m but then you wake up at 2 A.M and you're like why why did I book my flight at 6am right so so I think customer experience in general is something where there is a lot of repetitive work that requires a lot of interaction of ours that is somewhat an autopilot like when we are booking a flight yes we're using some kind of process but it's very time consuming and not necessarily a pleasant experience or for example having to wait in line forever to talk to a real person hoping that they might have uh the information we need yeah and there's nothing more disappointed than being kept on the line for five minutes to talk to someone who's got no clue of what you need to know so you know Automation and AI could actually help the experience make it better what if you were to have a conversation with something like child GPT and say look I got a thousand Euros I like the beach these are my constraints I don't like getting up too early in the morning but I also uh want to be able to have uh Sunset when I land um and what do you think are my options okay and instead of you going to one Airline and then the other and any other and then this one is cheap but then that one is this what if that process can actually be taken care of for you because it's not necessarily processed most people love doing no right so child GPT if properly crafted and supervised um and if it's integrated with the airline system to give you truthful information which today it isn't yet um can be ex extremely useful for this process so information about where is my luggage uh what can I expect from my flight you know is my flight going to be bumpy you know what what what are the things that I ideally should know before I get into this I love the thought of making those things more efficient and also there are certain things that I know that my viewers for example are going to be really interested in and and it's things like fear of flying and giving information more about flight about you know Airlines in themselves about weather patterns about where they're going to fly what they're going to fly over things like that that absolutely should be available to them absolutely and it might not have a complete solution to the entire journey of customer experience but the fear of flying that you mentioned about right um why am I afraid of flying I'm afraid of flying for a variety of reasons but most importantly I might get scared or might be afraid of things that I don't know of things that I cannot be in control so if I am boarding a plane and let's say I suffer from anxiety or fear of flying and out of nowhere the plane starts shaking yeah I didn't expect that I wasn't prepared for that maybe I have the knowledge about the fact that it's just turbulence maybe the captain has nicely and calmly told me we're going through here flying just starting your seatbelt right yeah but what if before I got on the plane I was able to get that information and be like okay I've spoken to either a human or AI or child GPT or whichever one and I've got information that my flight plan has been checked um these are the wins this is the Crosswinds that I have on takeoff this is what I can experience during the flight let's say I'm going to have a shaky take off uh turbulence two hours into the flight and then a smooth Landing yeah when I have that takeoff if I've been getting that expectation said to me beforehand I have to take off it's like it's shaking oh okay but I know it's because I'm shaking somebody told me I know exactly why exactly and you can also ask all right so what is crosswind exactly right and how does it affect why does that affect me is it dangerous and and you can get some actual answers to that exactly I think I mean this is there's something to this like I love I love the thought of of this all right so two may be one of the most important questions then because I know that there's a lot of potential Pilots out there that are dying to know will AI take their jobs or should they even train to become a pilot today with AI on the horizon so definitely if you're passionate and want to become a pilot go ahead do it AI is nowhere near uh taking it away from you but keep an open mind learn about it you know study it because automation just like it has up until now will continue to play an important role in making better safer happier playing oh I couldn't agree more with we're already seeing that a pilot shortage is on the horizon is already here in the United States uh absolutely and and to those of you that um are not necessarily looking to becoming a pilot but are afraid of the impacts of AI in your job I can tell you as an Insider there is no better time to start a business AI has just unlocked a lot of different opportunities I've been helping personally through my company um dozens of early stage Founders build a business from the ground up and I'll be happy to have a chat with you um if this is something that you're looking into when you want to enter the entrepreneurial world and start your own Tech venture and in fact that is exactly what me and Marco have now done together we've built a new web-based AI driven app which will give you access to especially Aviation trained AI bot called Adon now he will be able to help for example nervous Flyers by answering questions give relaxation techniques and support but he will also be able to summarize news articles and explain all kinds of cool Aviation facts the app will also give flight information for anyone who is about to fly within the next 36 hours including expected turbulence the route that you're going to fly and you can also then ask Aiden about what you will be flying over on that route which I think is just really cool in the app I will also start providing all of my videos completely without ads for premium users and you will be able to listen to the videos like podcasts with the screen off it is available right now and you don't need to download anything just go to app.mentorpilot.com and create a user oh and by the way if you have my older app then you can use the same login and of course all of your subscriptions will still work the basic version of the app is completely free and you can upgrade premium for the extra features and the training content whenever you like working with Marco on CVT on this project have been absolutely fantastic they are truly Innovative and flexible so if you are a serious entrepreneur with a tech business plan you should definitely reach out to Marco using the link in the description here which is cvt.ai Mentor they can really help your dream come true if you are willing to work for it now go and check out the app I hope you will really love it and have an absolutely fantastic day bye-bye
