all right good morning everybody first session with this little black mustang we brought him home from the adoption facility yesterday evening put him here in the round pen he's been in here all night and this is the first time i've walked in here with him and you can see he is pretty uh not very happy he's afraid that's all it is he's afraid and here's my job over the next however long it takes weeks or months is to just get him over being afraid to teach him that he does not have to be afraid and so my wife asked me a few minutes ago what are you going to do this morning and i said i don't know we'll see what he can handle um obviously i don't need to get him moving he's a flight animal and if you're not aware of this horses have three primary responses to fear flight which is what he's doing right now fight which you saw on the video when he was in the shoot at the adoption facility and freeze he'll he hasn't done the freeze yet our other mustang silver does a lot of freeze this one i don't see any of that we may see some of that later on but right now what we're seeing is flight um so as he's moving around you notice i'm in a passive position i haven't done anything except talk to you and he's running running running running running so the first thing i would like to do and i'll try it here in just a minute is to try to get him to look at me try to get him to acknowledge me and when he does then i will back away all right so i'm going to try that right here when he comes around this way i'm just going to back up and see what he'll do and see if he'll look at me or if he's going to he's going to run by me let me just see what he'll do i'd like for him to just look at me i'd like for him to look at me he didn't okay he just changed directions we'll try it again here in a second and the reason i brought this uh stick in here primarily was because uh if he decides to charge me then i have something to protect myself with i don't think he will uh he doesn't really seem like he's that type of horse but i've had it happen before and so i need something to protect me i could use a lariat rope or you know a lot of things would work but the reason i picked this stick is it has a little hook on the end of it on it here and if i uh have the opportunity to pick up that rope then i can use this stick to reach down and pick up that rope i don't know if i'm gonna be able to do that this morning or not okay let's try this again i'm gonna back up i'm gonna back up all right he did look at me that was better he looked at me not with as much fear as he did the first time so notice i'm just keeping my body language really passive here because i don't need to make this any worse for him all right let's see if he'll look at me oh that was a little better good got a little closer to me that time while he's running around here i want to just say something about the tip program tip stands for trainer incentive program this is a tip horse the mustang heritage foundation is a non-profit organization and i don't know if you saw that but he just licked his lips while he was running around so that's my first good sign there uh mustang heritage foundation oh that's good getting better oh that's i don't know if you see that but that's a big change there um so i'm just gonna walk over here i'm trying to be careful not to turn my back on him if i can help it he's licking his lips okay back to mustang heritage foundation it's a non-profit organization of some really really nice good folks and they figured out that a lot of people in america would like to have a wild mustang but they don't have the skills to do these first few weeks of getting the horse gentle down and so they set up this program where they pay trainers to gentle the horse and then someone can adopt the horse just as they would from the adoption facility so if you want to adopt a wild horse this one or one like it it only costs 125 dollars but if it's been tip trained like we're doing with him then that means that horse oh that is really nice that's really nice so i'm just going to back off i'm not turning my back on him necessarily but i took the pressure off for a minute that tip trained horse has been taught to lead to pick up his feet and to load in a trailer and so then you can adopt the horse and he already has the really the hard hard part has already been done for you and it's and it's still the same for you so if you want to adopt a wild horse this one or another one just you can contact me give me a comment and i'll give you some information on how to do that so we just saw some really big changes in that horse really big changes that was really nice okay he's starting to figure out that maybe just maybe i'm not going to kill him and i'm not exaggerating that's really what he feels i'm not exaggerating when i say that also i don't know if you've noticed he's come off the fence instead of hugging the fence he's now coming closer to me all right so we may find out even this very first session that my wife was right about about his kind eye oh that was really good good boy good boy good job little buddy good job and he doesn't have a name yet once my wife tells me what i'm going to name him then i'll pass that on to you i've been calling him little blackie just because he's little and he's black and i like the movie true grit but so we'll figure that out later uh today's the 23rd of december and he was captured according to the paperwork in august so that means four months he's been in captivity he was gelded in september probably was branded when he was caught in august there we go oh boy what a good boy you are so every time he looks at me and stops he gets a break i want him to think man this guy isn't so bad after all okay he walked off um so he's been in captivity for four months there we go he's pretty smart isn't he he's a smart little boy um he's from the triple b and or maverick medicine herd management area which is in northern nevada most of the wild horses in america are in nevada if they're still wild there are a few in utah and some in california and they think arizona but most of them are in nevada so that's really good that's really good he's showing me some really good signs he's got a leg cocked if i could get him to yield his hindquarters a little and just look at me that would be a happy moment and a great place to quit he keeps looking at me that's really good okay i'm i'm at a 90 degree angle from him he hasn't moved yet i think this horse is going to be all right what i what i look for here is the horse's ability to learn can he learn and he's showing me that he can and that's if he can learn all all's good in the hood you know we're gonna be fine if i would love it if he would turn toward me instead of running off he hasn't done either yet and if i'm rocking back when he turns his head toward me i kind of rock back a little let the pressure off no he walked off but he might turn back around here okay let me see what he does when i walk across this way so you see i i don't know if i could pick up that rope or not but maybe in the next session right there okay i'm pretty happy with that right there we'll make that a good first session and probably come back this afternoon and do another one okay welcome back uh this will be the second session with this little black mustang it's been about three hours i told you i like to work them several times a day if possible and right after that session i put our other our mustang silver in here with him just to kind of help him chill um so silver's been in here for about three hours most of the time silver was eating his hay and the black horse was watching him that's what mostly what they've been doing so i'm going to get silver caught here and get him out of here and hopefully he's not going to be hard to get hold of there we go good thank you buddy so interesting see how much closer the little black horse let me get just because silver's in here with him and what i'm going to do after now is leave silver in this pen right next to him so that they can touch noses through the pen for the next day or two so so i'm just gonna bring silver out and this is kristen she's one of my horsemanship students and she's going to come on in and help me here all right go on buddy here we go um yeah i'm gonna go ahead and close this gate or for now so kristin's been wanting to do this and i said absolutely i'm gonna show you how to do it so i think what i'm gonna do christian kristen is i'm just going to kind of coach you so this stick i doubt that you're going to use it but in the unlikely event that he charges you you can protect yourself with it but mostly what i want you to do is just carry it around like a like a walking stick and it'd be part of your body because you're probably not going to use it okay so just walk out there into the middle of the pen and i'm going to stand outside the pen here and uh put a little yeah a little at least the amount of pressure as you can get right in the middle and we want to get him moving around the round pin so get right in the middle of the pin okay so he's kind of seeing me over here and doesn't want to move i'm going to back up a little bit all right so if you can just kind of gently walk toward him and get him to to move out i want him to go around the round pin a few times okay there okay oh wow look at that all right so when he looks at you i want you to back up a step and try to time it as best you can so that he gets a reward for looking at you so i'm really really happy that he still remembers that lesson that's pretty amazing really that after about a 20 minute lesson this morning he's already learned that if he'll turn and face us then the pressure will come off okay so kind of walk to your right kristen and let's see if we can send him off to the left if you have to move that stick just a little to send him off go ahead we want him to go around the round pin there we go good so use the least amount of pressure you need to but go ahead and get him moving that's pretty good i'm glad he's learned the lesson kind of move the stick a little and just get him to move around the pin to the left or the right that's okay at this point doesn't matter that much so let's just let him go around you three or four times okay back up and take the pressure off yeah now don't turn your back on him at this early stage later on i would but at this early stage you know i don't trust him enough to turn turn my back on him okay so again see if you can send him off to your left just kind of lift that stick a little and give him a little impulsion the other way get him to go the other way other way there good do it again he keeps what he's doing there is he's more comfortable with you and his right eye there so we want him to get used to you in both eyes because each eye is a different half of the horse and in case you don't know a snort like that that's fear when horses snort it's because they're afraid and it could be we've got some kids over here behind the camera and you know there's all kinds of things happening that could cause him to be afraid go ahead and send him off kristen yeah either way that's all right get him moving see if you can kind of get behind him and put a little motion and just get him moving out yeah you'll have to go around okay that's pretty good it's pretty good see if you can send him the other way so he's already gotten a lot better from the first session this morning when he was running in a full-blown panic he's already starting to think about this you know he's a little afraid there oh that's pretty nice right there okay that's interesting that he snorts when you stop and you're backing up that's funny funny isn't unusual okay there he's licking his lips so let's let him rest a second all right so before we quit here on this second session i think i might be able to get him to yield those hindquarters i really like this is so much of an improvement just him standing there with his leg caulked and i'm 20 feet away such an improvement for him i'm wondering if i can get him to just step over on those hindquarters so i'm just nope he took off he took off there we go i'd like for him to choose to turn and face me there right there i got one step i got one step so i'll quit right there so he he took one step with his hindquarters and turned toward me and faced me so that's a good quitting spot for this second session you
