Martin: In the beginning of springtime. It's us, the Kratt brothers. Chris: I'm Chris... Martin: I'm Martin. And the flowers are blooming this time of year. And springtime means.... Martin/Chris: Bunny rabbits! Chris: These are domestic rabbits. This is a Velveteen Lop. Martin: And this is a Lionhead. They're so cute, right? Look at how fuzzy they are. Like their wild counterparts, these rabbits have all the features that make rabbits, rabbits. Chris: Like the classic long ears. They're always twitching and telescoping around listening for any danger sounds. Martin: And there's the legs. Long legs that are great for jumping. Chris: And I love the twitchy nose and whiskers. Again, more senses to sense the environment. To smell their food and danger. Martin: Hey and don't forget about the eyes for the same reason. Eyes on either side of the head can give the rabbit a view all around it. Chris: And check-out this cool feature, the split upper lip. It's great while the rabbit's eating because it can actually grab on to grasses and other plants. Martin: And in the wild, all these features give wild rabbits incredible creature powers. We gotta go check-out wild bunny powers. Chris: See you later pal. Imagine if we could run and hop like bunny rabbits. Martin: Imagine if we had bunny power. And spring means...chocolate! (laughs) Aviva: (laughing) Okay kind of - but more like spring means our annual Easter Egg hunt. Koki: And party! Jimmy Z: And my traditional nap. Chris: We need some more green eggs. Martin: Ah, you mean more blue eggs. (laughs) Aviva: I like Lavender and yellow eggs. Koki: Multi-color jellybeans! Jimmy Z: Ooh...yummy! I love Springtime! Martin: Voila! My Chocolate Easter Bunny is finished. Chris/Aviva/Koki/Jimmy Z: Oooh! Hahaha! Aviva: That is one highly imaginative take on a cottontail rabbit. Jimmy Z: Yeah, really. Martin: Uh no...actually, I was going for more of a jackrabbit. Chris: Uh, looks like a snowshoe hare. Martin: Uh no, my chocolate bunny is actually a jackrabbit! Jimmy Z: How come every Spring, we do all this fun stuff with chocolate bunnies and colored eggs anyway? Aviva: It's an old tradition that some say began in Germany.... as a celebration of Springtime. It started with a story of a bunny rabbit who left colored eggs in birds nests. And that story grew into the Easter Bunny. And spread around the world. Koki: Hmmm....how many kinds of bunnies are there in the world anyway? Let's find out. Jimmy Z: Wow - there are so many! Aviva: On every continent! Koki: Except Antarctica. So by my calculations, there are 67 species of rabbits and hares in the world Chris: And 22, 23, 24... 25 species are in North America which makes it the continent with the most species. Martin: And since we're here in North America, let's take a closer look... right here, in the west. Chris: Home of the pygmy rabbit. The smallest bunny in the world. Martin: Oh ho. Aviva/Koki/Jimmy Z: Cute! Martin: And the antelope jackrabbit. It's a hare and one of the largest bunnies in the world and the fastest. Aviva/Koki/Jimmy Z: Awesome! Aviva: And there are lots of bunnies in between. Chris: Like the snowshoe hare. Ahh! Remember our adventure with that speedy bunny? Martin: Oh yeah fun. Nothing like miniaturizing and riding a snowshoe hare. Better than a snowmobile. And then there's ones we haven't met yet. Like...the black-tailed jackrabbit. Chris: Appalachian cottontail. Martin: Desert cottontail. Chris: Mountain cottontail. Martin: Eastern cottontail Aviva: Whoa...that's a lot of cottontails Jimmy Z: Uh, hello? If you're looking for bunnies, why don't you just look out the window? There's one right there! Martin: Oooh cute. Aviva: It's so tiny. Koki: A baby bunny. Chris: No - it's an adult Martin/Chris: A pygmy rabbit! Chris: The smallest rabbit in the world. Jimmy Z: So what's the difference between a rabbit and a hare? Chris: Well, they both come from the same family - Leporidae. But hares are a lot bigger with longer ears. Martin: And like to live alone, while rabbits are really social. Aviva: (laughs) I can see that. Martin: But there is another big difference. Hares live above ground, while most rabbits live underground in burrows. Chris: Hey, what's she doing? (sniffing) Koki: Oh, they do live underground. It's her babies. Martin: And the babies are even tinier, and ... Martin/Koki: Cuter. Chris: Yeah, and a mother rabbit leaves her babies safely hidden when she goes out to eat grass. Aviva: Oh, they're so cute. Martin: Then she comes back to feed them. Baby bunnies drink milk for 3 to 4 weeks after they're born. Chris: They have to learn to run and hop quickly. Because a rabbit's defense is running away. And there's a cool creature feature. Martin: Oh you mean the split lip? Chris: Oh yeah. Koki: What? Rabbits have a split lip? Martin: Hares have them too. So the lips can kind of work like little fingers to help bring food to their mouths. Aviva: Hmm - not too obvious how that power will be used in the bunny power suit. Chris: Maybe, but one thing that is obvious, the pygmy rabbit couldn't be the bunny we're looking for. Martin: Yeah they're cute enough, but so tiny. You might find one inside a basket, but they could never carry a basket full of candy, chocolate and eggs. Aviva: So of all the rabbits and hares in North America which one is the best candidate to be our bunny? Martin/Chris: Yeah I know which... Martin: You thinkin' what I'm thinkin'? Chris: I think I'm thinkin' what you're thinkin'. Martin/Chris: Let's head... Martin: SOUTH! Chris: NORTH! Martin/Chris: Huh? Martin: Are you NOT thinking what I'm thinking? Chris: I'm definitely NOT thinking what you're thinking. Martin: To the desert! Chris: To the north eastern woodlands! Martin/Chris: To find the Easter Bunny. Aviva: Okay, well where are you going? Northern Woodlands or desert? Chris: Well I think we should have another look at the Snowshoe hare. It lives way up north. Koki: Oh, I love the snowshoe hare! Aviva: And I never programmed a power suit for them. So I gotta fix that. Let's go! Martin: Wait Aviva, you can't go with Chris, because I think the bunny we're looking for is a jackrabbit... so, you've gotta come south with me because we don't have a jackrabbit power suit either, come on. Aviva: Well...I...um... Koki: Checking Creature Power disc inventory now. (alarm) Oh. We don't have any rabbit or hare power suits. Not one. Aviva: Well that means I'll have to stay here and program up some bunny power discs, so, snowshoe hare version and jackrabbit version. Koki: And you'll need help with that, so I'll stay and assist. Jimmy Z: I'll stay too and take a nap. And maybe when I wake up, they'll be a basket with lots of yummy things to eat! (yawns) Aviva: He's not going to help? Koki: Don't worry, I'll wake him up when it's time to teleport a Bunny Power disc. So guy's, since you don't agree on what kind of bunny we're looking for, while I help Aviva, I'll also monitor your progress and be the judge in deciding who the Easter bunny of North America should be. Chris: Uh.. Okay. Martin: But Koki, we already know. It's the jackrabbit for sure. Chris: You mean the snowshoe hare bro. Martin: Well only way to find out. Let's split up and get hoppin'. Chris: The race is on! Martin/Chris: In search of the Easter Bunny! Jimmy Z: Whoa! Great, with the bros off creature adventuring, it will be nice and quiet. (yawns) Perfect for a long nap. (snoring) Chris: The snowshoe hare has to be around here somewhere. Nope. Oh...I had to hover-park over a snow bank. (struggles) Need these...snowshoes! Whoa...big feet like these snowshoes are the secret to the snowshoe hare. The snowshoe hare needs big snowshoe feet to walk on the snow. And our bunny would of course need big feet to run around and hide all those colorful eggs. Martin: I just know our bunny is a jackrabbit, and this is the right place to look. Martin: Hey, Javier! Javier: Martin? What are you doing here? I didn't believe it but it's true. Martin: What is? Javier: You did say you'd see me on the creature trail! Javier: Then it must be an antelope jackrabbit. Martin: Of course. The antelope jackrabbit! One of the largest hares in the world and the fastest. Aviva, I found a jackrabbit. It's huge! Aviva: Fantastico! Martin: Look at those ears. Aviva: I'm looking. Martin: He uses those ears for hearing danger in any direction. Whoa, I think he hears something. Look how he stays frozen. Only ears moving. Eyes on side of head - so he can see on both sides, in front and behind. And he sees.... Martin/Javier: A coyote! Javier: He's coming this way! Martin: Look at him run! Not only is he big, he's fast! Aviva are you getting this! Aviva: Oh yeah. Javier: The coyote keeps missing. Martin: And jackrabbits don't run straight. They zig and they zag. So even when the predator is right on his tail, changing direction quickly, allows the jackrabbit to get away. Javier: The jackrabbit's safe. Aviva: Wow! Jackrabbits are really impressive. And that's what this jackrabbit power suit is going to be. We're really off to a great start with rabbit and hare powers. I'm starting to program now. Javier: Wow, those long ears make him really tall. Martin: Oh yeah - big and strong too. If any bunny can carry an Easter basket, this jackrabbit can. I think we found... The Easter Bunny! Javier: Huh? Look there's a baby one. Martin: Oh yeah, but I don't think that's a baby bunny, cause it's not a jackrabbit. That's a cottontail. A desert cottontail. You can tell by it's fluffy white tail, like a ball of cotton. Javier: Ooh...I like cottontails Martin: Yeah me too. (snow crunching) (snow crunching) Chris: Hey Katie is that you? Katie: Hi Chris. Chris: Aw, this power disc is in a deep freeze. Martin: Where is it, where is it? Oh, over there. Yes! Oof! Ouch! (groans) Ow! (groans) Oh, lots of spines between me and that power disc. Koki: Oops. Sorry. Chris: Don't worry Koki-at least you got them to us. Martin: Yeah, that was a great job - ouch - for your first teleportation. Katie: How are we going to get it out? Chris: Hmmm, if I make the sound of a grub in dead wood? Aviva: I didn't hear anything. Koki: Me neither. Chris: I could attract a... pileated woodpecker! Oww. Insert woodpecker power disc, touch woodpecker, activate woodpecker power! Martin: I am not climbing a cactus. Hmm? Ooh...not without a little help anyway. Aviva: You know, we've seen cottontail rabbits everywhere. Martin: Yeah, I saw a desert cottontail. Chris: And I saw an eastern cottontail. Koki: I've made my decision. (bang) Maybe the Easter Bunny is whatever bunny lives in your backyard, backwoods, park or neighborhood. Like the cottontail rabbit might do. So, whenever you look out your window and see a bunny in the spring time, be it a jackrabbit, snowshoe hare, cottontail or whatever bunny you see - then that bunny is hereby officially... (bang) the Easter Bunny. Martin/Chris: Woohoo! Yay! Martin: So that's creature mission accomplished. We've met all kinds of bunnies. Both rabbits and hares. Chris: And we learned their differences. Aviva: Like hares are bigger with longer ears. Martin: And similarities. Jimmy Z: Both have a split lip for eating. Koki: But they're both still bunnies. Chris: And because Koki ruled that the Easter Bunny can be anyone you see, then here in the Tortuga - Martin and I are the Easter Bunnies! Martin: Right on Christopher Cottontail! Here's one. Jimmy Z: Gotta bunch! Aviva: Ooh, pretty. Martin/Chris: (laughing) Chris, I love bunny powers. Martin: Oh ya. I love being the Easter Bunny! Chris: Me too. Martin: So, rabbits and hares are a super cool group of creatures. Chris: Oh ya, they all have the same basic design. With big ears, big feet, explosive speed and quick turns and it's really fun to get to know the different species. Martin: So we're in this desert habitat to see what kind of bunny power we can find. Early morning is a great time to search for rabbits and hares. Chris: Because they're really active throughout the night and still moving around in the morning. Martin! Bunny at 10 o'clock! Martin: Whoa...an antelope jackrabbit. It's really big. You can tell an antelope jackrabbit by white around it's ears and its long strong legs. Like its name says, the antelope jackrabbit can move. This jackrabbit can hit top speeds of 40 miles per hour. Martin: Making them one of the fastest rabbit or hares in the world. Chris: Now the ears of the jackrabbit are so important for life out here, but not for the reason you might think. Those ears help the jackrabbit hear any danger, but also keep the rabbits cool in the hot desert. Lots of blood vessels run through their ears which helps cool down their blood and their body. Martin: A spot like this is a jackrabbit's favorite place to rest during the day. The cover of the mesquite tree keeps them hidden from aerial predators flying overhead and it's open below. The jackrabbit can see in all directions, so they can see any ground predators like ocelots coming. So if a predator is coming that way, the jackrabbit can run this way. It's clear that way, clear that way, clear that way, so the jackrabbit can explode and run away at the sign of any predator. So when you're a jackrabbit, you always have to stay on your toes even when you're resting. Chris: So rabbits and hares are a really cool. Martin: And really cute... Chris: Group of creatures. Martin: With amazing creature powers. Keep on creature adventuring.
