as you may or may not be aware if you've watched my last few videos i want to hit 10k by the end of the year so if you haven't already make sure that you hit that subscribe button and if you do i would absolutely love you forever but let's get into this it feels like a while since i've actually done why you should watch and the main reason for that is because i've not really been watching anything new that i haven't already spoke about on this channel before until recently now a series came out i don't know about a month or so ago maybe more maybe a month or two on amazon prime and it's called invincible now i didn't really know too much about this series going into it and by the time of recording i don't know when this is gonna go out or when you guys are gonna see it but the series actually hasn't finished yet therefore that means this will be a spoiler-free review as i tend to try and keep these as much as possible but i just got really excited about it this is a franchise that i hadn't really heard about before i am aware now that it was a comic and it's done by robert kirkman who may or may not be familiar to you but he was the person who did the walking dead and listen it's something superhero related of course i was gonna be interested but because i didn't really know too much about this i went into it blind and that's kind of why i want to keep this spoiler free like i do with some of the others because you really need to just go into this as blind as possible invincible is about a young guy who his dad is a big superhero there's like a whole team of superheroes that are suspiciously like the justice league and he really wants to be like his dad and then one day he gets his powers and he steps onto the path of becoming a superhero now the thing is a show like this could very easily be proper cliche it could be something that you've seen a thousand times before and i've got to say in places that is what this show is it is quite cliche you've seen some of these tropes before but some of these tropes you don't really expect to see in a show like this there's still that perception that because it's animated slash cartoon people just assume that it's for kids especially when it is superhero related but over the past few years i think there's been an emergence of more adult superhero super villain super powered being properties that are really trying to move away from that and this is no exception i'm not gonna tell you how i'm not gonna tell you why but i'd say the last five ten minutes of episode one if you are not interested in the rest of this series after that then you probably never will be but all i will say is when you go into that first episode expect to see the typical superhero stuff expect to see like this hero discovering his powers and learning how to use them and his relationships with people and how they may or may not be affected because he's now a superhero however the last five or 10 minutes of the first episode you are kind of like right where the is this going then one thing that i really like about the show as well is the fact that even though it is animated there's a hell of a cast in this the main character mark is voiced by glenn from the walking dead surprise surprise in fact quite a few of the walking dead cast are in this especially in the first episode you've got sandra oh who people might know from grey's anatomy you've got jk simmons of course who is known for superhero stuff at this point what with him being jay jonah jameson and now jim gordon zachary quintno's in this as well which is quite cool but yeah so there's like a few recognizable names in there and i think they really bring these characters to life the character of invincible or mark as we know him i really like he's kind of spider-man-esque in the sense of not necessarily his powers but the way that he conducts himself like he has got the quips he is quite witty he's quite useless with everyday stuff and trying to balance his superhero alter ego as well as being mark really i forgot to mention zazie beats she's in this as well that's another one the biggest compliment that i can give to this show is that it's very much like a mix between like your spider-man stories or your marvel your dc's you will definitely see characters in there that you think well that kind of reminds me of this character from marvel from dc but it's also got a whiff of the boys about it as well which is of course another superhero property on amazon and i think if you're someone who did enjoy the boys and you're someone who found a lot of enjoyment out of that and you like seeing the typical superhero stuff but done slightly differently then i think you'll like this as well the animation it's weird because i wouldn't say that in terms of the animation itself it really stands out i wouldn't necessarily say that it's better than some of the dc animations that have come out over the last few years but it's not too dissimilar so if you've watched some of those things like i don't know the flashpoint paradox or justice league war or the dark knight returns like any of those you'll kind of get an idea of what the animation looks like but the thing is that really vibrant colorful goofy almost cartoon style really works for this series and i think because it does have those darker elements in it in places i think tonally that contrast just really works and makes it incredibly watchable but when it needs to do that darker stuff when you see some of the blood and gore that's in this series because that is in there it does it perfectly well one thing i will say is like the pacing in this series is really really good because with some series it feels like an episode is just getting going and then it ends and then it's on to the next one and then rinse and repeat the episodes in this are like 45 minutes long on average and i've got to say those episodes do feel like 45 minutes they do feel the length that they should be but i don't mean that as a criticism i mean that in a good way because it feels like you get a lot of stuff and that the time is used really really well but it also does have that thing of it will be really good consistently throughout those 45 minutes but usually there will be something towards the end of the episode where you're like hell i need to watch the next one there's a lot to take in in the series there's a lot of characters there's a lot of things going on there's a lot of suspicions as well because there's some characters who you think that they're going to be one thing and it turns out they're not and then there's other characters where they're really in a gray area and you don't really know where you stand with them because it looks like they could be one thing but they also could be another thing i think mark is pretty much one of the only characters in the show where it's like yep i know for definite who this character is and even then with me telling this to you i'm still not 100 sure he could end up as something else the writing in this show i think is the biggest biggest strength because whilst it does like i mentioned before it does feel like it's reusing elements from a variety of different properties it's turning them into a fresh new thing so whilst you can see those similarities it is still very much its own show like i am fully engrossed in this universe i also like the fact as well that it isn't just set in one place i like the fact that you see the superheroes use the entire world even like there's an episode where mark goes to mars for example it's not afraid to change itself up as well which i think is really cool but it does it in a way that totally fits with what you already know it is dark and it is gritty in places but it is also quite light-hearted because like i say it's from the perspective of i think an 18 year old and there's certain situations where mark reacts exactly like an 18 year old would there's quite a few jaw dropping moments as well like i said the end of episode one in particular but there are quite a few moments where you do really feel that moment and the good thing about a series like this is it doesn't just leave you on cliffhangers and then the next episode will kind of pussyfoot around it it's like the story is consistent these jaw-dropping moments feel like beats in the story they don't just feel like they're put there to get you to watch the next episode however that's probably not true of episode one but then again it's episode one they obviously want you to watch the rest of the series and again like i say this isn't over yet this first series i don't know if they're gonna do another one i would assume they're going to but it's definitely worth a watch like if you come home from work or school or college and you're just like i don't really know what to watch and you've got a bit of time to kill before you have to do anything else stick one of these on i think for this sort of period whilst the boys isn't on earth this is kind of the next thing to watch so i can't as i repeat myself for like what must be the fourth fifth sixth seventh time who who's to save someone's probably counting if you do like the boys or you like superhero stuff in general absolutely give this a go it's really annoying because i've sort of gone over the bare bones of stuff and i'm like oh yeah these characters are really cool like blah blah the world's great i really want to talk in detail about it which i probably will do properly at a later date but right now i just thought i want to give you guys a brief sort of introduction to it and tell you why you should watch it because it is it is really really good and it's surprising how good this actually is i didn't expect it going into it i just thought it'd be something to pass the time but i am genuinely engrossed in the world and the certain things where i'm like oh i really hope this happens and i hope that character gets you know that thing or i hope this character ends up like over there or you know stuff like that i can't really say too much all i will say is omniman who is jk simmons's character arguably just as terrifying as homelander i'm not saying something because he's getting the out of me in the comments below though guys let me know what you
