It’s very difficult to catch what native speakers are saying at a natural speed, right? その気持ち すごく分かります。
I know how it feels. 私も、英語とスペイン語を 勉強しはじめたときに、まったく同じ経験（けいけん）をしたことがあります。
I had the exact same experiences when I started learning English and Spanish. 何度も あきらめそうになったし、自信をなくしたことも あります。
I was going to give up so many times and I had lost confidence too. でも、今はネイティブが言ってることが、だいたい聞き取れるように なりました。
But I became able to catch almost everything native speakers are saying. もちろん、今でもネイティブ同士が話してるときは、早すぎて 何を話してるのか 分からないことも あるんですけど、
Of course, even now when 2 native speakers talk, it’s too fast and I sometimes don’t understand what they are talking about, but 問題なく英語とスペイン語で、コミュニケーションが 取れるようになりました。

Today, I will introduce you some effective ways of improving your listening skill that I practiced when learning languages. 今日の動画では、日本語だけで話すので、字幕が見たい人は 字幕のボタンを押してください！

Okay, let’s get started. まず、日本語が聞き取れない原因(げんいん)を、考えてみましょう。
First, let’s try thinking of the reasons why you can’t catch Japanese. １つめの原因(げんいん)は、単語と文法を知らないことです。
The first reason is to not know words and grammar. 聞き取れるようになるには、基本的(きほんてき)な知識(ちしき)が、必要です。
In order to be able to catch Japanese, you need basic knowledge. というのは、聞き取れるときは、音と単語が合ったときだからです。
Because when you can listen is when the sound and the word (in your brain) match. たまに、聞き流すだけで 外国語が聞き取れるようになるっていう人が いるんですけど、
Sometimes, some people say that you will be able to understand a foreign language just by listening while letting it go in one ear and out the other, but 単語も文法も知らないのに、ただ聞き流すだけで 外国語が聞き取れるようになるはずが ないですよね。
there is no way you will be able to understand a foreign language just by listening while letting it go in one ear and out the other without knowing words nor grammar. たとえば、私はアラビア語の知識(ちしき)が 何もないので、
For example, I have no knowledge about Arabic, so アラビア語のポッドキャストの 同じエピソードを、何百回(なんびゃっかい)聞いても、聞き取れるようにならない と思います。
Even if I listen to the same episode of a podcast hundreds of times, I think I wouldn’t be able to understand it. もちろん、アラビア語が話されている国に住んでいて、いつもアラビア語にふれているなら、話は別ですが、
Of course, if I’m living in a country where people speak Arabic and I’m always exposed to Arabic, it’s a different story, but 自分の国に住みながら、外国語を習得(しゅうとく)するには、
In order to acquire a foreign language while living in your own country, あるていどの単語力と、文法の知識(ちしき)がいりますよね。
You need vocabulary and knowledge about the grammar up to a certain point. だから、まず 日本語の 基本的(きほんてき)なこうぞうや、文法を勉強しないといけません。
So, first of all, you have to learn the basic Japanese structure and the grammar. 教科書で勉強してもいいし、日本語学校に 行ってもいいです。
You can learn with a textbook, or you can go to a Japanese school. もし、教科書を使って勉強するのが きらいなら、

Okay. I just said a very obvious thing, but I think this is quite an important one. たまに、日本語の知識(ちしき)はほとんどないし、何を言ってるか 分からないけど、
Some people say “I have almost no knowledge about Japanese and I don’t understand what they are saying, but とりあえず 日本語の音になれるために、日本語を聞いてるっていう人がいますが、
I’m listening to Japanese just to get used to the sound.”, but それはあまり効果(こうか)がないと 思います。
I don’t think it’s so effective. もちろん、日本語の勉強をした人、あるていど 文法の知識(ちしき)や単語力がある人、
Of course, for those of you who studied Japanese and have some knowledge about grammar to a certain level, あとは、今 日本語を勉強している人にとっては、聞き流しは 効果(こうか)があると思います。
and those of you who are currently studying Japanese, listening while letting it go in one ear and out the other is effective. 勉強した文法や、単語が どんなふうに 会話で使われるか、どんな場面で 使われるかが 学べるからです。
Because you can learn how the grammar and words you learnt are used in a conversation, and in what scenes they are used. だから、聞き取れるようになるには、基本的(きほんてき)な 文法を学ぶことと、ごいりょくを高めることが、大切です。
So, in order to be able to catch Japanese, it’s important to learn the basic grammar and improve your vocabulary. 別の動画で、効果的(こうかてき)なごいりょくの高め方も 紹介(しょうかい)したので、よかったら あとで見てみてください。

No2 reason why you can’t understand Japanese. 日本語の教科書の日本語と、じっさいに日本人のネイティブが話す日本語は、１００パーセント同じじゃない ことです。
It’s the fact that textbook Japanese and the Japanese a native speaker actually speaks are not 100％ the same. 日本語には、ていねいな話し方と くだけた話し方が、あります。
In Japanese, we have a polite way of speaking and a casual way of speaking. 英語にも ていねいな表現はあるけど、日本語ほど、場面(ばめん)や相手によって フォーマルとカジュアルを 使い分けないですよね。
There are polite expressions in English, but we don’t distinguish formal and casual depending on the scene and the person as much as we do in Japanese. 日本語のほとんどの教科書では、まず、ていねいな日本語を教えます。
In most Japanese textbooks, they teach you the polite Japanese first. だから、教科書で日本語を 勉強している日本語学習者は、ていねいな日本語を聞くことに なれています。
So, Japanese learners that are studying Japanese with a textbook are used to hearing the polite Japanese. でも、日本人と友達になると、カジュアルな日本語で 話してきます。
But when you become friends with a Japanese person, they would talk to you casually. カジュアルな日本語になれていない人は、聞き取りにくいと 思います。
I think for those of you who are not used to casual Japanese, it would be difficult to catch the meaning. たとえば、これはどういう意味かわかりますか？
For example, so you know what this means? 「コンビニ行くけど、なんかいる？」 これは、初級の教科書では、
In a textbook for a beginner, と、教えられると 思います。
You will be taught “コンビニへ行きます。何かいりますか。」 でも カジュアルに話すときは「に」direction particleの 「に」、英語の “To” は、しょうりゃくされることが よくあります。
But when speaking casually, this “Ni” direction particle often gets omitted. あと、「なにか」が 「なんか」 に変わったり、
Also, “Nanika” changes into “Nanka”, or 「けど」は “But” という意味だけど、前置き(まえおき)として 使われることも あります。
“Kedo” means “But”, but sometimes it is used as an introductory remark. ほかにも、日本人は話すとき よく 「は」 「を」 「 が」 「に “To”」direction particleの「に」を しょうりゃくします。
Also Japanese people often omit “Wa” “Wo” “Ga” “Ni”(direction particle) when speaking. たとえば、
For example. あとは、「い」をしょうりゃくして、「食べてる。」「 飲んでる。」とかも言います。
Also, we say “Tabeteru” “Nonderu” while omitting the “i”. だから、ていねいな日本語より、はやく感じるんですよね。
So, it feels faster than polite Japanese. ほかには、ふつうは 日本語は、英語みたいに 主語を言いません。
Also, we normally don’t say the subject like in English. 「私は」「あなたは」「彼は」「彼女は」「彼らは」とか、 主語を言わないことが、多いです。
We often end up not saying subjects like “I” “You” “He” “She” “They” これは、話の流れで 誰の話をしているのか だいたい分かるからです。
This is because we kind of know who we are talking about by the flow of the conversation. でも、これになれていない人は、今 誰の話をしているのか分からなくなります。
But people who are not used to this would get lost and don’t understand who they are talking about in that moment. みく先生！じゃあどうすればいいの？って みんな思ってるかも しれないですが、
You guys might be thinking “Miku! What should we do, then?”, but これはもう、なれるしかない と思います。
I think we just have to get used to it. 日本語には、習うよりなれろ！ということわざがあります。その通りだと 思います。
In Japanese we have a saying that goes “Practice makes perfect.”. I think that’s totally right. 日本語に ふれる時間を、できるだけ増やして、いつも 日本語を聞いたり、読んだり、話したりしましょう。
Let’s increase the time to study Japanese as much as possible and always listen to Japanese, read Japanese and speak Japanese. 日本語のドラマを見たり、アニメを見たりするのも すごくいいと思います。
I think it is so good to watch a TV series, and an Anime. アニメを見たら 変な話し方になるから、見ないほうがいい という人がいますが、
Some people say if you watch an Anime, you will end up sounding weird, so you shouldn’t watch an Anime, but 私は、アニメからも 学べることが、たくさんあると思います。
I think there are a lot of things you can learn from Anime. もちろん、アニメだけを見て、アニメのキャラクターのまねをすると、すごく 変な日本語になる かもしれないですが、
Of course, if you only watch Anime and mimic Anime characters, your Japanese might sound strange, but アニメだけじゃなくて、色々なばいたいで 使われる日本語に ふれれば、問題ないと思います。
If you expose yourself to Japanese that is used not only in Anime but also Japanese that is used in different kinds of media, I don’t think there is a problem. 私のおすすめは、バラエティー番組とか、リアリティー番組です。
My recommendation is variety shows and reality shows. あと もう一つ大切なことは、知らない単語をメモするしゅうかんを 身につけることです。
And another important thing is to have a habit of taking notes of the words you don’t know. ノートに書くのが一番いいですが、ノートがないときは、けいたいの メモに 書いてもいいです。
It would be best to write it in your notebook, but it’s okay to type in a memo on your phone when you don’t have a notebook with you. これは、みなさんも経験（けいけん）したことが あるかもしれませんが、
You might have experienced this as well, but 私は単語をメモしたら、その単語をよく聞くようになります。
In my case, if I take note of a word, I start hearing that word. それまで ぜんぜん聞かなかったのに、メモした日から その単語を よく聞くようになります。
Although I didn’t hear it at all before, I start hearing it a lot from the day I take note of it. これは、それまで聞いても、頭に入らなかった だけだと思います。
I think it’s just that that word didn’t stay in your head even if you had heard it before. でも メモすることで、それが頭のどこかに残って、
But by taking a note, that stays somewhere in your brain, and 次、聞いたときに 脳(のう)が、「あ！この単語知ってる！」って思うから、聞き取れるように なるんだと思います。
when you hear it the next time, your brain thinks “Oh! I know this word.”, that’s why you start catching it. だから、ドラマとか、アニメとか、YouTubeを見たり、Podcast を聞くときに、ただ聞くだけじゃなくて、
So, when you watch a TV series, Anime, or YouTube, or listen to a podcast, I recommend you not just listening to it, but 分からない単語が 出てきたら、調べてメモすることを、おすすめします。
Looking it up and taking a note of if when you the word you don’t shows up. 日本人の友達が、知らない単語を使ったときも、はずかしがらずに 聞くことをおすすめします。
I also recommend you ask your friend without being embarrassed when your Japanese friends uses a word you don’t know. 分からない単語が 出てきたときに、「Blablaってなに？ Blablaって何ですか？」と聞きましょう。
When words you don’t know show up, let’s ask もちろん、１００パーセント聞き取れるようになるには、時間がかかりますが、
Of course it will take time to be able to catch what they say 100％, 毎日続ければ、いつか必ず(かならず)ネイティブが言っていることが 分かるようになります。
But one day you will definitely be able to understand what native speakers say if you keep it up every day. 一番大切なのは、楽しむことです。
The most important thing is to have fun. 楽しくなかったら、続かないですよね。
It doesn’t last if it’s not fun. 自分が一番楽しめる方法を見つけて、それを 続けてみてください。
Please try finding a way in which you can have fun and keep doing it. アニメが好きなら アニメでもいいし、人と話すのが好きなら、日本人の友達を作って たくさん話してもいいです。
If you like watching Anime, Anime is good, and if you like talking to people, you can make Japanese friends and talk to them a lot. 自分に 一番合った方法を、見つけましょう！

Okay then, to summarize today’s topic, まず 大切なのは、日本語の基本的(きほんてき)な 知識(ちしき)を身につけること。
First, the important thing is to acquire basic knowledge about Japanese. それか、身につけながら、リスニングをすること。
Or do listening practice while acquiring the language. 単語も文法も 知らないのに、聞き流しても あまり効果(こうか)がないと思います。
I think it’s not so effective to listen while letting it go in one ear and out the other. ２つめは、教科書の日本語だけじゃなくて、日本人がじっさいに話している日本語に、ふれること。
The second important thing is to expose yourself to Japanese that Japanese people actually speak in real life. 日本人の くだけた話し方にも、なれること。
And to get used to their casual way of speaking. ３つめは、知らない単語が出てきたら、必ず(かならず)ノートに書くこと。
The third one is to take a note when a word that you don’t know shows up. そして、覚えた単語をいしきして アウトプットすること。
And to use the words you learnt (do output) consciously/ 最後に、自分が楽しめる方法を、見つけること。
Lastly, to find the way in which you can enjoy learning. これは、あくまで 私が自分の経験(けいけん)から 学んだことです。
This is just what I learnt from my own experiences. あとは、日本語を聞き取るのが 上手な学生が、じっせんしてきたことです。
