- The GameCube controller is a bit unconventional in its layout, but it's the closest, we'd get to a modern style
control scheme from a pack in Nintendo controller
until the WiiU game pad. And it's kind of great. It's comfortable. It has all the buttons you'll
need save for a left bumper. The only real issue is here.
The face buttons it's weird, but it works amazing
for a game cube games. A is the focal point.
Everything else surrounds it. It's such a beloved controller. It's still sold by Nintendo
and use to this day for super Smash Brothers Ultimate whose controller layout
lends itself well to this classic controller. I'm one of those people that
now prefers using the GameCube controller for smash. I like flicking the C stick
for smash attacks and aerials. And I liked that the jump
buttons are out of the way, but reachable for stuff like that. Short hop aerial macro. Before getting all into smash brothers ultimate, I thought to myself, this is a 20 year old controller. Surely we can do better than this by now. Well now just like they've done
many times in the past retro fighters has taken it upon
themselves to redesign the GameCube controller, to make
it a little more modern. This is the dualist a wireless
Nintendo switch controller made specifically for smash brothers. And I guess you could probably
play Nick tunes with it. If you're one of those guys, there's a lot to unpack here
and it's a tall order to try to dethrone one of the best
controllers of all time. This video is sponsored by magic spoon. I can't be eating literal
garbage cereal as a man in my thirties, I've got to start being careful about what I'm putting in my body. - Oh no. - Magic spoon has zero grams of sugar, 14 grams of protein and only four net grams of

So go show them some love. Also, if you don't slap
a like on this video, I'm going to do nine more switch
oily videos to compensate. You've been warned. Anyway, retro fighters has redesigned
retro controllers in the past. They started with the brawler 64, which is a redesign of the n64 controller, which desperately needed
a modern redesign. And it is my favorite N 64
controller to use to this day. The original N64 controller
is an abomination, a curse on mankind. This one is comfortable to
hold and make sense for people living in this century. They make ones that work with the N 64, but the one I have here is USB. So this is the controller I've
been using every time I play awkward enough time on Twitch. Right. Okay. All right. I see the value in
redesigning the 64 controller. I also see the value in
redesigning the second Genesis or a second Saturn controller, kind of, I was under the impression
that the dream Catz controller was pretty much fine as it is.
And the GameCube controller, that just seems like an impossible task. And we've been using this
controller for 20 years because we just love nostalgia. You don't get much out of the box here. It comes with a decently
long USB-C cable tip. And to my collection of USB-C cables, even though it gives off the
vibe of a game cube controller, it's more or less just a
third party pro controller. It has all the same buttons. The shoulder buttons are the
same as a pro controller. The placement of the thumb sticks is just like a pro controller. You have octagon old gates on the sticks, which is more similar to
a GameCube controller. And the face buttons are this
weird sort of mashup between the pro controller and a GameCube
controller. And honestly, it's like the worst of both
worlds on a GameCube controller, a is the focal point. And all of the buttons
surrounded on the dual list a is large, but it's off to the side
and X and Y are to the left. It's not comfortable, or at least it would take
a lot of getting used to. You have this extra
button up here, special. This button performs any of
three pre-programmed macros, which you can change by
pressing this fist button. There's a short hop, which is usually just a
light tap of the X button. There's a forward smash for some reason, which is usually just b and a together. I actually didn't know that. And there's the short hop Ariel macro, which is just X plus a at the same time, I kind of understand this for
something like a short hop, because short hops are
relatively difficult to pull off. If you're new to the game, you have to basically
feather tap the jump on. Otherwise this feature
is essentially useless. The S button ends up
just being in the way. It's pretty much exactly where
the Y button would have been on an actual gamecube controller, at least in relation
to the giant a button, it's much more of an inconvenience
than it is a convenience. It's also incredibly
light and Jeep feeling, which I kind of understand
because the brawler 64 controller is also light and cheap feeling, but the ergonomics of that
layout make up for it in spades. This one doesn't get that much of a pass. The most credit I'll give it
is that this thing is only $30, which is pretty decent for
a wireless Nintendo switch controller, but it also
doesn't have motion controls. So you can spend an extra
couple of bucks to get motion controls in a wireless
Nintendo switch controller. If that seems worth it for you, there's plenty of great
controllers for 40 or $50 that get you motion controls too. Hell, I've even touched controllers
that are $10 that have pretty decent motion controls, but those aren't good controllers. I never said they were good. The last little nitpicky
thing that I'll rag on this controller for probably
maybe is the thumb sticks sensitivity. Now the thumb sticks have
these octagonal gates, which are great. We love those, but the thumb sticks seem to
heavily favor the X and Y axis. The C stick is much worse. It's so bad, You can feel it resist you. If you're trying to point
it in any direction, other than straight,
horizontal or vertical. Now most controllers favor
the X and Y axis a little bit, a little thumb stick
calibration menu on the switch. We'll show you that, but this controller takes
it to the next level. And I don't think I've ever
had a controller physically resist me like that. When
you're playing a game, it's not so bad, but it
shouldn't really be there at all. I've been ragging on this
controller for a while. So let me say something
positive about this controller. It could a wake your
console up from sleep. Hello, hello, Controler is supposed to
wake the console from sleep. And I woke it now. It's not working. No, I don't recommend this controller. Normally I would end these
reviews by trying to characterize a specific type of person who
would benefit from getting a product like this, and I really just can't think of any, there's like a very narrow
window of skill level and smash brothers where this might be useful. Like maybe you just turned
items off and you're starting to learn some of the more nuanced
mechanics, but even then, you're still better off with
a GameCube control or just a regular old pro controller. I doubt this thing will ever
be legal in tournaments. And even your friends will
probably say that you're cheating for using this controller
because of that macro button. This makes me really sad
because I really do like retro fighters. And I hope that they continue
to push the envelope with more retro redesigns. But in this case, I think they got a little too
mad with power just because you could, does it mean that you should? Yeah. It's something
I need to work on too. What do you guys think
about the brawler 60? No, the rec the dualist it's
called the duelist or just the GameCube controller in general. Do you think the game
controller needed a redesign? Do you have this and have you
had a different experience with it? Do you see the need
for something like this? Do you wish this was just a
little different when it served some of your needs? Leaving it in the comments below, add me on Twitter, any and all of this, all of their social
media garbage, thank you. Magic spoon for helping
sponsor this video. But of course the most important
thing that you can do to help support this channel is
just subscribe right here. And if you want to see these
videos, when they come out, cause you can't trust YouTube to show them on your home screen, make sure you click the
notification bell. So, you know, when these videos get posted, otherwise you're only going to
get to see when I talk about the old lady switch. Anyway, you can also share this
video with a friend, a friend who is interested in
smash brothers and might be interested in something
like this. I don't know. Thank you guys very much. I
have yourself a very good week.
