these 22 men are about to be executed by a firing squad of a hundred and ten it's the British Army's largest mass execution since the outbreak of the first world war the date is the 25th of March 1915 in the British Crown Colony of Singapore a large crowd is gathering on the slopes of a golf course to witness the executions there is a carnival-like atmosphere well why is this happening and who are these men over the course of World War one more than 1 million of Britain's colonial Indian subjects served overseas they were known as sepoys this is a story of one group of those sea poised on October 10th 1914 an Indian Muslim regiment of the British Army arrived in Singapore to replace the King's Own Yorkshire light infantry which had been ordered to France just one month later the regiment's Colonel and us that they would be transferred to Hong Kong rumors began to take hold that the sea boys actual destination was not Hong Kong but Turkey where they would be thrown into battle against their Turkish brothers in faith when no mention of Hong Kong was made at the regiment's farewell parade the sea boys felt their rumours had been confirmed a single gunshot fired by Sepoy Ismail Khan signaled to the Indian Muslim soldiers that the mutiny had begun at around 3 p.m. 800 C boys turned against British officers killing around 40 of them and seizing ammunition Singapore was left practically defenseless with most of the Singapore volunteer corps on leave due to the Chinese New Year holidays the rebels marched through Singapore laying siege to the home of the regiment's commanding officer 2 days later allied warships arrived after British pleas for help and while the rebels put up a fight they were eventually overwhelmed by February 22nd the Singapore mutiny was over many sea boys lost their lives in battle many surrendered and the remainder fed into the jungle these are the events that led up to this moment that was witnessed by around 15,000 people at a good drum jail in total forty-seven mutineers were executed though there were other cases of rebellion approximately 1.3 million colonial Indian subjects served in World War one and the concerns of the Singapore mutineers were not unfounded many Muslim soldiers were indeed used in campaigns against the Ottoman Empire which involved two capturing regions such as Palestine and Syria you
