This video gets started, and then just ends abruptly. Like they just built up all this stuff and then. Yup. That's it.
The YouTube channel Sideways did a video on Home Alone where he points out how John Williams used those four notes as a neat easter egg.

This is a cool video and I never thought about movies quoting the Dies Irae.
Then the Youtuber shoehorns in the LotR one, which isn't the same melody. Same basic shape, but that's not the same.
Then in the Mozart requiem, there's two notes (saeclum) that are a half step apart. If we're only going to pull two notes out of a phrase and say it references a dies irae, we can literally add millions of other pieces to this. What's funny is that those two notes are really cool in their own context. It's a very Mozartian phrase. But the only real connection the Mozart has to this is that there's a Dies Irae in his Requiem Mass...but it's a very common piece in the Requiem Mass form.
Referencing a descending chromatic scale in the Verdi Requiem? Not even close.
While the rest of the video is really cool (I won't at all deny the Exorcist theme is quoting the Dies Irae, as it's obvious, and really hip), I feel like adding these other "examples" actually weakened the argument.
Hey Vox, could we get more VOCAL FRY in your videos? Done already?
my second year of high school marching band, we did a horror themed show and this motif was All OVER the music. this and the "tubular bells" theme from (i think) the exorcist. watching this was like so much validation cause i recognized the motif from other things, knowing where it comes from it's really cool
Damn! I thought he was going to give his list then it just stopped!
Man, Vox loves putting out flimsy content like this. Can we not with the Vox videos?
video starts
"is it dies irae?"
video: it's dies irae
Does Making Christmas qualify?
