preferable to the sea master the Submariner kept the whole commercial dive watch thing off in the first place it's amongst the most desirable watches ever made not to mention the unbelievable residuals but none of that is much good if you can't actually get one and if by some miracle of the Gods you can knowing how much equity you have residing within it can be a bit of a weight on your shoulders that's just one of the myriad reasons why the Seamaster professional is a better watch let's break it down a bit further on a rubber strap this see master is 3,700 pounds a lot of money for sure but a long way shy of the near 7000 pound asking price of the Submariner and an astronomical distance from the current market worth of the green bezel addition you get an in-house movement the the traditional swiss lever escapement in case you're wondering so not only can you actually get one but you can enjoy it and use it without the fear of hefty residuals hanging over you even this rather nifty looking gray dial version which in Rolex pilots would be a slightly more expensive purchase residually even more so won't set you back a penny more than the bog standard black or blue dials no false scarcity no deal waiting lists no ponying up for watches sitting untouched in jewellers windows to gain access to the one you really want you can walk in hand over the cash and walk out with it on your wrist and if you plan on keeping it the submariners biggest trump card its residuals is gone Omega as a brand can out a pedigree Rolex all day long being one of the great contributors to the way watches are made today and how they'll be made in the future the Seamaster itself is a harder watch to make than the submariner twisting lie logs dressed with voluptuous beveling ceramic dial edged with the trademarked waves that flash with a rhodium gray sunburst glued hands and markers matching the symmetrical date at six so as an experience from start to finish the sea master offers a more rewarding opportunity to own a dive watch from one of the great sports watch manufacturers no hoops to jump through no palms to grease no silly games and that's got to be worth something even if you are more of a fan of the way the Submariner looks that's pretty much moot when all you can do is enjoy it vicariously through your internet browser the Submariner could be all things to all men but if you can't buy it as kind of worthless if only it were that simple here's the paradox you can get up right now walk to your nearest Omega stockist and not only buy an Omega Seamaster professional but also have your choice of the variety Omega offers to boot and there is a gluttony of choice steel gold titanium blue black white and all of them are available just take your pick the Seamaster professional is dependable reliable and secure you can rush out and buy one now we can wait a while and get one then here's the funny thing doesn't that somewhat dull the allure I can't explain it everything about the C master is perfect it looks great it's superb Lee built has a cracking movement if this were a science experiment the hypothesis would quite firmly point at the C master as the one and only outcome and yet what we've got to understand here is whether there's something about the Submariner that makes it more desirable or if it's simply a case of the grass being greener punch the question into a robot give it all the details and the printout will read C master no matter how many times you turn it off and on again if this were a game of Top Trumps the additional escape valve cheaper price and coaxial escapement would see the Submariner slammed into the playground tarmac so why are they available by the bucketload it's a question if the Submariner one one six six one olv were freely available would it be as desirable you only have to think back to 2003 when the original LV was released a 50th anniversary celebration of the Submariner line that had waiting lists for the first year but soon after that became freely available at less than our RP and even had a fair few detractors now you can end up paying sky dweller money for one so what on earth is going on why are you more likely to be struck by lightning than to get a call from a Rolex dealer to say your LV has just arrived and would you like to pick it up today sir for scarcity alone isn't enough if Omega simply didn't supply its retailers with sea masters then well there would just be less people wearing sea masters no there's something else about Rolex something intangible that the public just can't get enough of here's what I think Rolex isn't a more historically important brand than Omega the Submariner isn't a better watch than the sea master what I think is that Rolex is a better brand than Omega and I don't simply mean that in the sense of its popularity even when it was finding its feet in the early part of the 20th century when Omega outsold it a hundred-to-one Rolex was a better brand this is why I think that is Omega makes watches Rolex sells them founder has Wilsdorf was no watchmaker he was a Salesman a marketeer he knew trends before they happened he knew the power of celebrity endorsements and brand affiliation he understood that perception was as much about how his product stood together as a unified whole as they were standing alone take the Seamaster from now the 60s and the 40s and sit them side-by-side and you could be looking at three watches from three different manufacturers do the same with Rolex and you know you're looking at three watches from the same team and the same is true today browse the Omega lineup and tell me this without the logo you'd be able to guess that the Globemaster the bull head and the Seamaster professional are all made by the same company the ly lugs are a theme for some of the watches but it's a subtle trait even between the ones that share it now do the same for Rolex and it's a different ballgame and this hasn't happened overnight it's been building and building and building a slow steady and importantly consistent message that's been seeping into our consciousness for decades so there you have it you should buy the Omega Seamaster professional not least because you actually can it's the better watch so why wouldn't you because sometimes better doesn't matter the deepest diver
